I’m a 40 year old single mom with a daughter about to graduate high school meaning i have a lot of free time all of a sudden so I recently started school to pursue a longtime goal of an SE degree maybe switching to DA…my biggest hurdle right now is imposter syndrome. This perspective from a younger person who is already successful in the tech/data field that I would feel inferior to because of said syndrome was refreshing. Great channel!
Most tech fields move so fast, you can quickly become a rookie no matter how much experience you have. The thing is, it's impossible to be an expert in more than a dozen topics or so. Because of that, there will always be tons of people more expert than you in different things. It doesn't make you an imposter. It makes you human. Be good at what you do, be dedicated, and be open to learning new technologies when they are relevant and necessary, and you'll be successful. Einstein would be an imposter these days. If you have expertise in a field of study and are productive in the workforce today, you're not an imposter! That's my take. Great video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!! :)
Completely agree, it's important to differentiate between not knowing everything and not knowing enough to be good at your job. Thanks for sharing your take and for the feedback!
As a fellow female entering tech/data from a rocky STEM undergraduate background, I find you so relatable and inspiring! I've actually been plagued by imposter syndrome for YEARS! 😅 I'm so glad I discovered you via TikTok! I now follow you on both YT and TikTok to binge your videos as I transition into my new tech career! 🥰
Wow everything about this makes me so happy! I wish you all the best in your tech career. Welcome and let me know if there is anything in particular you'd like to see a video about!
I really needed to hear this. I feel so pressured to keep learning 24/7 in order to keep a job. I feared that I was going into a horrible career life. I mean, yeah, it'd pay good, but there'd be no work-life balance. But hearing others having hobbies and a life outside of work is a real relief
I'm happy I found this channel. Informative, useful and entertaining! Also, thanks for sharing your personal experience. Sorry to hear about comments you received. Looking forward to future videos.
I remember my first year of undergrad when I got a B on my math exam. I wanted to break every piece of furniture in my living room. (Can you guess I was a straight-A student myself?) However, I thankfully did not resolve to just get good enough grades to pass my courses and earn my degree. If I did, I would've had a hard time getting into grad school. If undergrad is where you definitely plan to stop, then sure, release the pressure valve. However, put some thought into your future plans beyond just the next few years. This goes double if you want to work in AI/ML/DS, in which many job postings require advanced degrees.
I cannot be more thankful to you and putting this topic in a very interesting way and passing all the messages that I was waiting to hear. Specially after message 3 and 4 it made me feel on ease and confident. I constantly keep battling and spiraling these tgouggts. I will try to take your advice on sometimes lowering the standards also help seek other potential possibilities. Not sure what your name is but thank you again for this video.
Thank you, I felt so called out this whole video 😅, but I'm really glad I watched it! I hope I can get better with the imposter syndrome throughout university.
As a self taught tech manager and entrepreneur with exactly 0 exits and currently doing comp vision startup this video brings me joy and relief somehow. Thank you for that! Btw discovered through tiktok if that’s make any use for you
Here's a like, another great video! Yes the imposter syndrome is real especially in tech and academia where there's always something new to learn and the speed of change is unbelievably fast. Also, really liked the advice you're putting out for dealing with imposter syndrome.
This really means a lot coming from such an incredible TH-camr like yourself! Thank you! Glad you liked the advice and I always welcome feedback if there’s anything you would add :)
@@damselindata This is a great channel and I'm sure it will blow up very soon, I think we came for data science and stayed for the humor! Looking forward to more awesome videos!
tbh I don't really have to watch this video cause I do enjoy my life without any comparing with others but you are really awesome and the energy you have is energetic 😂 I only watched this video because of your chessy lines and the funny action. Anyway i hope you will become more successful and be a huge tech channel and I do subscribed to your channel not because it helps me a lot but the way you said "subscribe" that really caught me😅
The feeling is real!! Def have these feelings from time to time, no matter how much I learn. Thanks for sharing these tips and your perspective, this truly helps promote that the feelings we have are completely normal! Keep up the content!🤙🏼
Omg thank you so much for all the validation I could ever ask for!!!! 🥰 so happy you found it helpful and I’ll definitely try to make more similar videos. Good luck with the rest of your degree, you’re so close to the finish line!
Thank you so much for this video. I really needed to hear all that. I'll watch this video every day for sure, it helped me so much right now. You are the best please keep going❤
My advice on overcoming IS comprises two simple questions: 1. Did you put in the work to earn what you have? 2. Did you hurt anyone to get where you are? If you answered yes to the first and no to the second, then go ahead and tell yourself you deserve it!
People at peace with themselves don't take things out on others. 5:40 Also, wisely choose which opinions to value while considering the intent of the interesting observations.
Nearing the end of my maths degree and applying for jobs has got me feeling like this at the moment! I was on a path to teaching but recently decided to go into data, and now feeling like I’m not good enough 😩😂
@@amyparsons1278 still in my first job in the second year of a two year grad scheme. I found it on sites like gradcracker and was invited to an assessment centre. Once you get there just make sure you ask loads of questions. You’ll stand out 👍🏼
So exciting that someone with a similar career path found your comment and responded! Definitely more helpful than I can be. The fact that you have enough interest to have actively pivoted into it while still in school gives me no doubt that you will not only survive but thrive in the field! Nothing is actually as difficult as it seems (school is also much more difficult than work) so have faith in yourself. You got this!
Seems I got this yah related this please I can't understand english😢 can you clarify to me I use Google translate to comment to you I hope you can help me
I wish I could pick your 🧠. I'm a medical laboratory scientist by trade. I have an undergraduate in medical laboratory science. I will get my MBA with a certification in Business Analytics from Iowa here in a few short months. I will complete my MSBA a year from now. I really want to break into tech. I'm wanting to start as a Healthcare Data Scientist so I can at least bring domain knowledge to the table while strengthening math and stat knowledge and further developing computational skills. Being in healthcare, we have clinical rotations. You were always hired by your clinical site unless you were extremely bad. I want a little room to make mistakes without my employer thinking they're wasting money on me. I'm 38 with kids, so I can't exactly sign up for unpaid internships. It's definitely tough.
Good for you for taking the big step towards a career transition - it’s not easy but it sounds like your plan will open many doors! Starting off in a data science role where you can bring your medical expertise is definitely the way I would go. You can also consider a data / business analyst role at a larger company that also employs data scientists and transition within the company.
Omg calc 3 was my problem course as well - lowest grade of my degree (53% lol) so I can definitely relate. I spent a lot of time in prof office hours asking her to explain questions to me step by step. 😂 keep pushing through - you got this!
@@marilu0007 let me tell you that applying math in industry is magnitudes less complicated than they make it in academia. :D One thing that made me stop questioning my degree (despite tons of suffering) was taking a single math course (Lin Alg 2) during the summer. It was actually really enjoyable when I didn't have 4 other complex courses to worry about. Keep in mind the suffering is probably due to the sheer work load.
