  • Tool-assisted superplay (TAS) of Tournament Arkanoid Arcade (1,243,140 pts pts) (Hard)
-I did this Tas to see the rounds layout in this version since I never had the chance to play this game in the arcade back in the 80s.
This game is the original Arkanoid but with different levels.
-This video is just a superplay. I finished the game relatively quickly but it could be done faster. Sometimes I chose to have fun rather than going fast.
If we had the choice between infinite angles, some rounds would be completed much faster, but we can only choose between about 6 different angles at which the ball bounces on the paddle.
To get a high score like on Twin Galaxies, you have to shoot many enemies while keeping the ball in play but without ending the round. This is why the score for this TAS is less than what is posted there.
-In this game, for a TAS, it is possible to change the power-up (rng manipulation) simply by moving the paddle before the power-up appears. So if you see the paddle move for no apparent reason, like at the start of round 3 (1:52), it's to change which power-up will appear.
While doing this TAS, I observed that enemies movements are also random, so moving the paddle influences the path they choose.
-The number of hits to break a gray brick changes as you progress in the game, increasing the difficulty of the game. From what I tested, the difficulty setting of the game does not change this.
    -Rounds 1 to 9 = 2 hits
    -Rounds 10 to 17 = 3 hits
    -Rounds 18 to 24 = 4 hits
    -Rounds 25 to 32 = 5 hits
-At the end of the game, the boss takes 16 hits before dying. So to increase my score I did the trick of shooting Doh 15 times then dying. You get 1,000 points every time the ball hits Doh, or 15,000 points for each life.
I did it 24 times for a total of 360,000 points.
It's strange that the 16th hit doesn't give any points, I would have thought killing the boss would be worth something. 😀
Since there is nothing random at this stage, I just copy/pasted what I did for the first life.

    ====Description====
Tournament Arkanoid is a sequel to the original Arkanoid, developed by Taito and published by Romstar in the United States in 1987. Thanks to the success of Arkanoid, many arcade owners were keen to have another version of the game that would continue to attract players and their quarters.

1:18 I ask nicely that all Americans stop the video and give the screen a salute at this point.
Especially today, the Fourth of July.
Also... who would ever have seen the company behind this game release a RPG just six years later? It wasn't just any RPG, though... LUFIA AND THE FORTRESS OF DOOM!

Nice and it was nice to see you utilising the laser for a change.

It's _NOT_ called Arkanoid Extend, when Taito Japan is refused the offers and undecided to release this due to horrible performance per location tests at the Japanese tradeshow.

No, it was from an earlier Taito game, Chack 'N Pop.

The only place I remember seeing this is in a supermarket; I never saw anyone play it. I always found the title pretentious... which "tournament" was this intended for?

It's just the name of the game dude

Yeah, I get that. It's just that "Tournament" has a sports connotation, like the game has become more geared toward contests, parties, and the like. Generally it has more options, more settings, tighter controls, better balance, etc. The best example I can think of is NBA Jam Tournament Edition. Since this is essentially the same game with new levels (i.e. a level pack), a more appropriate handle would be something like "Deluxe", "New", "Special", "Extra", "DX", "EX", "Advance", "Redux", or "2nd-something".
(Don't sweat it, digging all that up wasn't any great effort. I was around for Pac-Man Plus, so this is small potatoes for me. 🙂)
