Battle Wings, known in Japan either as Battle-Wing or B-Wings, is a vertically scrolling shooter first released as an arcade game by Data East in 1984. The game was ported by Data East to the Family Computer in 1986, and was Data East's very first home release for this platform.The game consists of 45 levels (30 in the Family Computer version), and no background story or plot is given. The player controls a ship called the FX-1, and collects power-up parts (called a "wing") to progress through the levels and ultimately defeat the Gobunasu armored mobile fortress with some of the weapons in the final level.

The player is unaffected by attacks from airborne units while they are playing on the ground level, but the ship is automatically brought back into the air after a certain period of time. The player can still be hit by attacks from ground units while they are on the ground level, and can also lose their ship by crashing into obstacles. The 8-way joystick controls the player's movements, and one button is used for shooting, and the other is used for descending to the ground (or un-equipping wings). The background image continues infinitely when the player scrolls in the horizontal directions.Completing the final level give full points.

The player can also score cheap points by equipping and un-equipping their power-up. Pressing the button twice while the un-equipping animation is occurring cause the player to gain 2,000 points. The player gains an extra life every 40,000 points, so it is possible to gain lives almost infinitely. If the player gains over 10,000,000 points in this way before completing the final level, the counter takes over 20 minutes to increase to 99,999,999 points.8 different types of power-ups (wings) are included in the arcade version, each of which have characteristic strengths and weaknesses. Anti: Allows the player to shoot in the backwards direction.Cannon: Allows the player to shoot more powerful shots in the forward direction.Ground: Allows the player to attack enemies on the ground Jump: Allows the player to attack with shots that travel high up and return to their original height to explode.Multi: Equips a rotating cannon on the ship, which allows the player to attack in multiple directions except backwards.Side: Allows the player to shoot multiple projectiles in the horizontal directions.Varrier: This allows the player to shoot multiple beams that spreads outwards from the ship.

Every one picks the Hammer.
True. There is a reason why everyone pick the hammer. I used as much wings as i could. The air fortress that need to be destroy with the side-wings were the hardest one for me to handled.
Heroes of Xanadu - Sloth The hammer has a shield, that is why everyone use it. But you can lose it if you abuse it like ram it to indestructible object.
I saw other 'let's play' video that never used Hammer, and yeah there is boss that needed to use side-wings, he changed wings at the right moments though.

Now I can die peacefully after knowing the ending. 🤣 One of the hardest game of its era. Hammer is my favorite. I remember when I accidentally ejected my wings during the battle with the Boss , the only way to survive is shrinking myself. Thank you Xanadu.
There is a mixed feeling inside me after finally found this game that I played 27 years ago.. it took me a while wondering is this the game that I had been playing those days.. it's almost like meeting someone that you loved during your childhood and deep inside you want to see her again to "recreate" that excitement, that joyfullness, that nostalgic feeling..

Did you use savestates? There seemed to be a fair share of unnecessary risks taken in few spots especially later in the game.

My Father Used To Play This Game When He was A Kid.

I played this game during my childhood. I had several shooter for my famicom as a kid but none attracted me as much as this one. I also had Star Force, Macross, Twin Bee, Galg, Mag Max. And other pseudo shooters like Helicopter and Galaga.
B wings was the only one of those where I made significant progress, I remember making it to around level 17 when I was 7 or 8 more or less, with a bunch of continues of course :). I loved B Wings because it wasn´t very punishing, you could get killed and go to continue and start playing the level from the start, with 3 lives. I remember that I used to rely on Dyna wing so much, to the point where I don´t think I ever face the spider or frog bosses without it ever.
The 2 bosses that were real roadblocks for me where the worm and the boss that is only vulnerable to Side. Both require a lot of precision with your movement. The Worm´s first attack is hard to evade even if you memorize the boss´s pattern, and the Side structure boss requires you to move in a very narrow path for a long time, the camara is the real enemy with this boss.
Maybe one day I will try to beat this game, with a bunch of continues and all.

I used to love the bosses' design and the way they appeared. Is the first time in like 18 or 19 years that I see the spider of the third level. It was a legend for me when I was like 6 or 7 years old. My older brother's friend told me about this boss and I imaginated it bigger, like the first 2 bosses, or maybe a little bit smaller. Thanks for upload this game. I felt nostalgic and I was looking for it. Same with other games that I don't know the names.

The bosses in this game a weird mechanical constructs and shapes XD
First DECO (Data East Corporation) videogame by their own (Developer and Publisher) on NES.
Its original version was "Battle Wings"/"B Wings" in 1984.
So, that NES port in 1986 is not a port for all, but was an update with:
- Starting Weapon Wings Selection.
- More Equipment Wings, including someones non-selectable at start.
- 3 Non-mecha special bosses.
- In-game BGM
- Ending with a message included (Japanese Romaji)

Back in around 2010 or so, a ROM hacked version this game was in a “vs Maxx 64 in 1” bootleg console. The title was called “ultimate Choice” and I distinctly remember it having a different soundtrack, and each wing having real names of US aircraft’s like F-18, F-14, F-117, etc.
I have those "handheld" game that has these nes roms preloaded inside. Had fun playing this again after all these years.

Si hubiera continuado un poco mas pero siempre me dio la impresión que el juego se repetía por eso no lo acabe pero me lleve una gran diversión que no olvido.
Yo siempre quise saber que significaban esas palabras al final del juego ya que estaban escritas en japonés pero con letras y no los kanjis japoneses. Gracias por el dato, saludos.

He plays with aggression. He never backs down when confronting a boss and tries to hit the boss in the soft spot. He Barely "fidgets" and only fidgets to nearly miss ricochet.
The boss music and the bosses were kind of scary for me as a kid.

Thanks you Aaron.The hammer is my favorite weapon.The level skip help so much and the last boss has so many hit points.The Air Fortress that can only be hit from the side are more difficult.The spider is very easy if the player know where to stand.

When i was kid that game was epic - the music so happy and such for that time hard game - but when i was kid i finished it maybe 2 :) But many times play again for 1-2stages for relax xd
