and the finale of this story, involving Dorn, on the anniversary of my first 1k subscribers, which was in large part thanks to the Dorn vs Fulgrim moment! The closure here is spectacular, Dorn shaken but successful against one of the primary gods of chaos is a fantastic bitter-sweet high point surrounded by the misery of the end of the heresy. Didn't just defeat Khorne. Part of the surprise in this section is that he spent centuries under siege, caged in an endless desert, and then he's the one who broke through! The only ding against Dorn is that he doesn't put together the power of Talk no Jutsu.
Other primarchs were manipulated by others or bad circumstances into worshipping the Gods, while Dorn resisted corruption from one of them directly. “There are no gods. Not even you.”
That's kind of a philosophical distinction at that point. Like, they have great knowledge, power, and life span which greatly surpasses any mortal man, and they're even ethereal creatures. It is easy to see why some call them gods, but they do not meet all definitions of godhood so there's an argument for either. Personally I think that the Ctan were the most legitimate claimants to deity status in the 40k setting. They are as old as nearly all existence, tied to fundemental aspects of reality and are immortal. Creatures of the warp in 40k require some foundation in the experience of living things to come into being sustain themselves, the C'tan on the other hand, they just are. Granted they used to just be gas clouds which somehow tied into the foundations of reality, but that's still pretty deific.
If you can trust the fandom wiki, he kinda is: --- "Rogal Dorn, known as "The Vigilant," the "Praetorian of Terra" and the "Unyielding One," and to his gene-sons by the "wall-name" of "Defiance," was the primarch of the Imperial Fists Space Marine Legion and one of the greatest heroes in the history of the Imperium of Man." --- Quite literally: Rogal Dorn, the Unyielding One.
When Dorn wielded a sword, it was to make plans, to swear oaths to his fallen sons, to carry out his duty, never as an indulgence. But most importantly of all, he had no hesitation in dropping it if it meant saving a life. He was unyielding in his principles and that allowed him to defy even the maddened gods.
I've long been a fan of the VII legion, but never cared much for Dorn. He was just not particularly interesting compared to his other brothers. Abnett did an absolutely spectacular job with him in this and Saturnine and really gave him the personality he deserved. He and Sigismund do an excellent job showing how "boring" characters can be interesting.
Dorn is still pretty boring. Sigismund is a far better character. Its the curse of the 7th. Whole bunch of great marines but the most interesting primarch of all the legions
Take that TH-cam notification system! Both Dorn and I have enemies. One is a malevolent demonic god, the other is Khorne. In all seriousness, glad to catch this one early.
Wait, I thought it was g-mans rejection off ascension that broke Dorn out, but he did it himself. This was epic, reminded me of a much longer version of when Fabious Bile looked directly at She Who Thirsts, almost died through the sheer act of looking away, then hit us with the "nothing is there"
I'm enjoying these readings so much more than the licenced audiobook! I am actually able to register the emotion and grandeur of what is happening! Fantastic!
I played the first part of this as i was driving to the gym, not realizing how many parts there really were. Ended up listening to the whole thing and found some pretty great motivation bc of it. Props to you and the writer of this piece for making it such a fantastic listen
The ending always gets me. Imagine being buried under rubble for who knows how long, trying to dig way out till your fingers are bloody, and when all Hope is lost this behemoth of a man finds and saves you, and it’s none other than the Emperor’s son. Reminds me much of his Son Kantor
Oh now that is a truly tough question! haha Why not both? I like clean shaven Dorn from his discovery all the way up to the end of the Heresy. Post-Heresy Dorn, heading to the Iron Cage, he can start to grow some more unruly facial hair to go along with his deteriorating mental state, then have it shaved into mutton chops after his inevitable (let me dream) return! and, my thanks for watching!
@@danielquintonvo I also want to see him come back. I sincerely hope that "skeleton" the imp fists have all scrimshawed is a fake that he left behind. Dorn does possess guile, and did dupe Perty during Lion's Gate!

It cannot be understated that Rogal Dorn defeated Khorne through sheer stubborn force of will. He truly is Rogal Dorn the Unyielding.
Khorne: "FALL TO ME ALREADY!"
Dorn: "No."

Spoilers, dude 😢.
"I, am Rogal Dorn..." - Rogal Dorn
"Not this shit again!" - Khorne
Dorn, "damn i've been stuck here with this demon for 200 years"
Khorne "damn this mfer is repeating the same thing over and over, i'm losing my mind'
Other primarchs were manipulated by others or bad circumstances into worshipping the Gods, while Dorn resisted corruption from one of them directly.
“There are no gods. Not even you.”
Only Fabius bile can match the stubbornness of rogal dorn when it comes to gods

"He is free,
and he has a sword."
That's terrifying in any setting of the grim dark
I am angry that just like Malcador is known as Malcador The Hero, Rogal Dorn isn't called Rogal The Unyielding

Ah yes, the age old question...
Dorn flakes, or Khrone flakes?
dorn is unyielding. there is only one unified fortified dorn. there can be no dorn flakes because that implies that dorn can yield

TTS made me love dorn tbh but this confrontation with Khorne is just awesome.

Dan Abnett is a great writer. Characters come to life with his pen.
Even when digging a hole, Rogal still fortifies
2 centuries spent alone and his sons lost smh he is indeed unyielding The Emperor created these Primarchs to be next level badasses for sure
The Emperor created a great warrior, but it was Dorn's grandfather that raised him into a great man.
The ending is just so perfect, he knows who he is, he remembers from his sons, but just to be sure he asks someone so he truly knows he is.

For all that Rogal Dorn has been pigeonholed as an unfeeling automaton, it's worth noting he feels grief for his warriors, to him, they were his sons.
Saw this notification and immediately raced over to listen to this, as always you’ve done a great job.
