I’ve been in Kyiv fir the last 5 months Oct’22-Feb’23 . It’s very beautiful and by far safer here than New York or any major city in the US or Western Europe .
My wife and I live in Sweden, and we basically moved out from the second largest city in the country to have a more simple/less stressful/calmer lifestyle.
That's what I don't like about this video; the fact that he was a big city boy. I would NEVER live in a big city in America, as that is where the drug addicts, the gangs, the criminal element thrive, because those cities are run by Democrats who don't have a bone in their body, or a cell in their brain. I live in a multi-city area with 300,000 population. Low crime, no gangs, we leave the doors unlocked, beautiful area to live. There is more to America than the awful, big cities I won't even visit, let alone live in.

UK and Canada where they micromanage every little interaction between doctor and patient and your hospital functions like a dmv in many places, or Germany and Denmark where the sole intervention is a mandatory health insurance policy with a cheaper government option?

The average wait time for Brain Surgery in the UK is 3 months, so while that tumor is growing, just be sure to be real patient, and if it explodes or eats your brain tissue in the mean time, well, at least it was free. In India the government has price controlled the cost of Heart Stents such that every person with a heart attack recieves stents. But what about the people that needed bypass surgery? Their situation is clearly neglected, and using the improper surgical intervention will lead to another heart attack or likely death probably 10+ years before they would die with the proper care. Prostate Cancer has a 99.9% survival rate in the US. in Canada in the UK, it is 93%. That 6-7% might not seem like a lot to you, but it's great to know if you are, or know any males, that prostate cancer cells are almost 100% present in males aged 60+, meaning every man you know has about a 50% lifetime chance of developing this cancer. That 6-7% could be your family or friend, and in the US it's almost like nothing ever happened, it is so exceedingly rare for a prostate cancer death to occur. You can learn alot about the UK and Canada by looking up wait times, for visits and surgeries both. Another thing you probably don't know, most states have their own healthcare specifically for citizens of their state that pay in, which is essentially emergency insurance that guarantees you wont pay a dime over 2000+. The US Government made the current employer system by requiring health insurance for full time workers which strangled off lots of private plans. If it was simply about lowering cost for the average person, you might just make a law requiring a doctors visit to also be payable in cash, and require a detailed receipt for every service performed or good delivered, and allow medical boards to give out their own qualifications and not prohibit doctors from working unless they go through the expensive AMA schools (which in turn squeezes the supply of doctors which increases demand) You also fail to mention that the average person in the US pays about 30-40% of their income in combined taxes, and that the average canadian, uk person, pays upwards of 60% in combined taxes. Do you think most americans want to double their tax burden so that we can turn the doctors office into the same bumbling mismanagement as our public schools, of our dmvs.

Here in Berlin so far I didn't see someone get shot directly as Aaron did in SF, but it happens in the neighbourhood, particularly stabbings, and I get to know people who are involved. Brave move man, I live in central-eastern Europe and every time I was talking with someone from west-Europe countries they have had a picture of East like cold, post-Soviet and ugly countries but the truth is kinda opposite. Also few times I've been in France, Germany and must admit that overall I felt less secure than in my country and I'm not speaking about language barrier.
I grew up in the south bronx I've been living in central Spain for the last 5 years..I have peace tranquility and a daughter I would rather die than let my daughter grow up around the environment I grew up in things I saw ..I know theres great places in America but it's just much nicer in Europe

I completely agree, moved from Long Beach to Seville with my wife and toddler two years ago and it was the best move we could have made. Life is so much more relaxed and chill out here, way safer than the streets of any city in the US. I'm real good off living in Ukraine though, not too many mixed couples like mine around that way lol
Living in Eastern Europe earning US kind of money makes you a goddamn king here. It's basically what most smart people from Eastern Europe are doing, or planning on be doing. Especially if they're into IT or engineering. I guess it's Easter European dream. 😂

Aaron actually also inspired me to start learning coding. Calling myself a programmer would be a stretch. I've learned beyond basic stuff but then got carried away by product management. Understanding coding definately helps here too.
As someone who lives in Serbia for almost 50 years, you've missed one crucial thing, in eastern Europe corruption is a part of your life, everyone is corrupt, from a president to a janitor, and that is the main reason why those countries have much worse economics and are not good to live in. I get it is nice to have great earnings working online for US companies and live where everything is cheaper, but investing in those countries is not a good thing because of the corruption everywhere, you have to be corrupt to have a company there, it's how it works in eastern Europe. Also, governors son can run you over on a crosswalk and don't get a day in a jail. Basically lawlessness and corruption runs the country.
This is true also in SE Asia. But here's the thing, in the USA only the top officials are allowed to be corrupt, normal people are thrown in a cage. In other countries, everyone can participate.
I can only speak about Ukraine and not Eastern Europe as a whole, but it's less about corruption being an integral part of life, but more about social systems and institutions being rigged to favor the corruption opportunities. If you REALLY wish to do things by the book, you can still do that, it's just much harder since you have to navigate rather complicated sets of legislation and unwritten rules and customs, which to a foreigner can be rather confusing. I've been in my fair share of situations where police caught people for speeding and decided not to pursue the matter with issuing speeding tickets because the drivers were adamant about getting proper paperwork and knew their rights, so the policemen just could not appear imposing enough to ask for a bribe. Pretty much the same goes for general bureaucratic institutions, schools, universities, even goddamn tax office (to be fair, can't include hospitals here, though without going into much detail, the current situation with healthcare may actually be favoring foreign citizens, weirdly enough). However, you do need the right mindset and knowledge to pull that off, plenty of simple folks just can't for a variety of reasons.

As a person of Slavic heritage I'd never move to Ukraine or Russia. They're too geopolitically unstable. Bulgaria would be my #1 choice. #2 Croatia, and #3 Slovakia.

The netherlands is a good option if you speak english (and even better if you are willing to learn dutch, its not hard), if you speak german, go to germany and just build up your savings, and then see whats there. If you can, go with studying at the same time, it wont be easy, but preferable, if you want to have a chence at not breaking your own body in labour jobs later down the road, plus will be easier to get a better starting job in any country if you have a good education/certification in a good field (IT is a pretty good option).

@@mong4491 Here we speak two languages: Ukrainian and Russian. The first one is more common, the second one is more universal, so I would recommend everyone to learn Russian. It's incredibly hard, but if you set your standard low, than you'll be able to communicate on a basic level after some time of learning. Generally speaking, we know some English, but don't expect too much

I'm from Serbia and the only problem here is our weak economy, but for those that have money this isn't a bad place to live contrary to what both westerners and my generation growing up was led to believe. It's safe, the only crime i or my family experienced is getting my bike stolen cause i left it outside one too many times, people are friendly IMO, there's no terror attacks, natural disasters,people are more traditional and conservative but in a good way, they value family, tradition, hard-work, honesty etc. The cities aren't overcrowded, even Belgrade doesn't have more than 2mil, everything in Europe is basically an hour plane ride away, Greece,Italy,Germany if you want to go on holidays etc. The food is amazing but i might be biased, the girls are beautiful but our guys are very tall and big as well so you have some stiff competition here, but if i was an American earning 100k remotely, i'd basically live here like a king
I mean yeah it's not that bad, but it depends on where you live in the country. The worst crime I witnessed and was a victim to is getting my bike stolen, in addition to getting all the locks in my basement broken and stolen. I also witnessed quite a few drug deals. I mean yeah, it's a 100 times safer than San Francisco, LA, New York and Chicago but still... You could run into some problematic people. And there are some natural disasters - floodings. Again, not comparable to some places in the US like Texas or Florida, but it can still cause a considerable amount of damage... But I agree with everything else. I'm actually kinda glad I was born here and not somewhere else.

I traveled a lot throughout Europe as an international truckdriver including Serbia, Ukraine, Romania etc. You are feeling real freedom at the moment and are free from fake !! 1) You can move around without having to look over your shoulder or be on your guard for things you mentioned (shoplifting, pickpocketing, drug abuse or even killing) 2) people don't care about fake image, they won't buy a bigger or more expensive car or house to impress their neighbors, they don't brag !! 3) you are starting to understand that the definition of poor is a different poor than what you were made believe all your life 4) you are not being treated as a threat or as an immigrant but as an equal I could go on, but until this point it's already reason enough to at least consider if you're happy the way you live
Would disagree with your second point, it really depends on your social status. The higher you go, the higher stakes at the wealth rat race become. And even in middle and lower classes, people tend to blow small fortunes on ceremonies like weddings and funerals for precisely the same reason you mentioned - appearing to your social circles more well-off than you actually are. Not saying absolutely everyone is into it, but it is quite common.

I’m from San Jose, CA. Small 2 bed, 1 bath houses are over a million dollars, homeless people are pooping and doing drugs in the streets and people are getting shot. There are nice areas too but the bad things are right around the corner.

I lived in Bulgaria for a couple of years. Totally agree that there are a lot of interesting and beautiful places in Eastern Europe. And the older architecture was really cool too.

I lived in the Philippines where it's hard to find people who can't speak English but despite being able to easily communicate with most people after living there for 7 years I met maybe 2 Filipinos who I was able to "bond" with. Finding a place that fits who you are as a person is so important. Ultimately I moved to Brazil because everyone I met through my work that was from there were so great so I knew id probably fit right in there (despite safety nonsense) and sure enough I did. And like you mentioned at the end of your video, moving to a place where 100% of the people are your type is, ya.... sound judgment lol. That said Ukrainians are cool and my experience with Russians is awesome too but I just can't handle winters anymore for the rest of my life.

I lived in the city in the 1970's, and it was really great. I moved across the bay, but still commuted in until 4 years ago. In that time, I've only gone in into the City half a dozen times. Honestly, if I never go there again, that would be fine. It's dirty, expensive, and way overrated as a city. I can't believe people still visit it as tourists.
I am the same. I left Australia 2 years ago to live in Russia with my Russian fiancée and I have not looked back. A cheaper and more beautiful country and many beautiful girls. Moreover, Russia is the largest county on earth and I am having fun exploring it. No sjw, no political correctness here, just a simple life: I love it.
As a native Russian living in the USA I can still agree I love Russia because they don't have so much political correctness bullshit as we do have in the USA.

The plan seems to be to vaccinate the vulnerable first. It's supposed to be voluntary. I would expect the situation to stabilize only in summer and restart next fall. It you want to visit Europe, the best chance will be in summer.

I lived in SF for many, many years and moved to Germany in late 2019. I had been planning my move for well over a year. When I moved, Germans were perplexed as to why I would make such a permanent move away from the USA. Now, I think they are beginning to understand. Americans thought my move would not be permanent. They thought I'd be back already even though I said it was not a temporary move. But, I think they get it now, too.
When I first moved to Italy 20 years ago, Italians were very similar. They would ask me WHY I would move from the States. Now rarely, if at all, I am asked why I would want to move from the USA.
He's not wrong about Kiev I visited once ended up making a friend and been back loads of times....lots of programmers there working for foreign companies and the city has a really cool vibe about it I love it

I’ve been a green card holder 🇺🇸 for 6 years and moved back to Ukraine. I was depressed all the time in the USA. Didn’t feel safe physically and financially. Couldn’t get proper health care even thought it was covered by health insurance, the diversity of culture and healthy food was poor. I lived in 6 states and none of them felt like home :(
I'm from Serbia, and hearing that you moved to my home country seems ironic since the majority of youths wants to leave the country on every opportunity which presents itself. In fact a good friend of mine moved to Germany under a month ago. On the other, just this summer, I met a number of people from the US who have ties to Serbia including another friend, who may even permanently move here.
As a German I can tell you the reason for the safety rate going down over here: We invited all the criminals from the third world into our country! I’ve been around the world and my friends over there told me that they are so happy that we took their criminals because their country became safer. That’s the problem when an old stubborn grandma reigns the country.

You barely touched on the social aspect of the US. The people here are unfriendly, cliquey, fake, flaky, and very hard to befriend. This is especially true in the West (I live in the Phoenix metro area).
It might be because you live in a major city. Try moving to a smaller, midsized city with less transient transplants. Not all cities in the US have the same vibe.

Woah, I witnessed the same thing during my last visit to SF. A guy walks into walkgreens, loads up an entire backpack full of drinks, and waltzes right out. I even pointed it out to the manager _as it was happening_ and he literally just shrugged and said, "It's not worth the risk." What's more, there were a dozen or so cops all congregated at the corner just a block away. I told them about the incident moments after it happened, and they just said to me, "Welcome to San Francisco."

Aaron Jack, your video is really an inspiration to me! Ironically, my great grandfather Itzig is from Odessa, Ukraine and whose last name I bear. It is so funny for me to think how he fled the hardships of Ukraine and living under the draconian rule of Czar (and later the Bolsheviks) to come to the land of opportunity , the USA. Now, his own great grandson is considering fleeing the USA for the same reason and maybe going to Ukraine. A lot of my family comes from Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Poland. I have considered moving to Eastern Europe and it would be easy for me to blend in. I have travelled the world and understand the challenges with adapting to cultures. I am a nomad at heart and really eager to leave the USA. I actually love my country (the USA), but hate what is happening to it. You sound like a fellow Libertarian minded person like me. I grew up in Southern Oregon and frequently went to San Francisco over the years and it was always a very dirty, sketchy and grimey place. I haven't been there in over a decade, but I hear it is just turning into a real cesspool and yet this is the epicenter of America (and the world to a degree) IT industry. I was living in Seattle and fled the Pacific Northwest for the same reasons you describe about San Francisco. There was too much crime, drug addicts, homeless people and the government mismanagement and allowance for the activities has created a hostile and lawless like living environment. I am a software developer of 20+ years who is having trouble finding work, because I was an entrepreneur and had a small medical type software business I helped build and ran. I took a major paycut doing this and regret I didn't go off earlier and do other things. Anyway, I am now watching your videos and really inspired. I loathe having to work at a big corporation, be a slave to the managers and not be able to utilize my software skills to their fullest. My background is C# and .Net , but I am more of a back-end developer. However, I am open to learning new things. Currently, I am striving to become a DevOps engineer as I feel it is a high demand and niche field in IT and not overly saturated like front-end /full-stack web development has become and you have more autonomy in a DevOps position. Even though software is my passion and its what I want to do in the long -run I really rather only do software development as a freelancer or in my own business pursuits. Your story is inspirational and I like your assessment about niche technologies for freelancing that are high demand like eCommerce frameworks such as Shopify. I wonder what your opinions are about other higher-level/more pre-packaged frameworks such as SalesForce (for CRM, ERP, etc). I know SalesForce probably has much more demands in coding than Shopify. eCommerce, esp with Covid is taking the world by storm. It sounds like a lucrative field. Even though I don't particularly love React or Javascript, I feel for a more specialized area of development, such as expanding the power and featuers of Shopify, it could really shine. I also like React Native for similar reasons, native -like cross platform features with a single framework/language. I wish I could have a chat with you as I feel you are the kind of developer I wish I could have met in person and has similar goals in life as me. Unfortunately , I am getting old now at almost, but I still have big dreams and a younger heart. I will keep following your videos and signed up for your newsletter. If you are hosing a bootcamp, I doubt I Could afford it now, but always open to learning more.
Man, you landed in a country with a civil war going on. It has gone through 3 revolutions in past 30 years. One of the highest corruption rates in Europe. So if you seek safety, I would rather think of Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Scandinavia. They’re more expensive but much more stable. Personally, I’m thinking of moving there after finishing my university CS program in 4-5yrs.

Mostly you are right, but you should look on this from the point of “history of Ukraine”. Our country was the part of russian empire and then the part of ussr so the mentality of people is still like soviet especially older people 40-50+, but we got a very strong culture, our own language and a lot of writers and poets who was against russia and discrimination of ukrainian people and all they gave the big impact especially now on people’s minds, that ukrainians is not russians. There is no way to fully escape from russian influence for a such short period of time, but the main stages are already done. Because of this hybrid war we lost almost all of the russian markets which was the main place to sell our goods and now we should “bring our standards” to the EU quality and this is not so easy when you got a lot of corrupted soviet nomenclature in the government. Because of all that we don’t even have a real opposition politics yet so people had choose Zelenskiy (which was the comedy actor), just to end with the old government. But a lot of changed to the positive side. Now Ukrainians can travel to EU without a visa, a lot of our people goes to Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, for a work but not moved there. All the money that they earned they send to their families in Ukraine, as much as they bringing a “piece of EU mentality” here, to their children and its impact a lot. Also we don’t have the internet censure like in russia where government can put you in jail just for a meme agains the politics, or christian religion. The police won’t shoot you like in the US for example, and if that happens this will be a main event of whole country for a week. You will never find a drug addicted people on the streets because of the police and very negative attitude from ukrainians so they are all sitting in their homes or in far forests. So if you just a regular guy who earns from 2k$+ you might just enjoy your life here, not worrying about the safety, and for a bonus we have the most beautiful girls in the world (i visited almost all of the eu countries, us, canada, so i can say it for real) and I think you all know about that :)

I am paying $3k for an apartment building that has been broken into with a crowbar twice. I don't want to live in fear and seeing people overdosing on the street everyday. Thanks for posting this.

In India the government has price controlled the cost of Heart Stents such that every person with a heart attack recieves stents. But what about the people that needed bypass surgery? Their situation is clearly neglected, and using the improper surgical intervention will lead to another heart attack or likely death probably 10+ years before they would die with the proper care. Prostate Cancer has a 99.9% survival rate in the US. in Canada in the UK, it is 93%. That 6-7% might not seem like a lot to you, but it's great to know if you are, or know any males, that prostate cancer cells are almost 100% present in males aged 60+, meaning every man you know has about a 50% lifetime chance of developing this cancer. That 6-7% could be your family or friend, and in the US it's almost like nothing ever happened, it is so exceedingly rare for a prostate cancer death to occur.
You can learn alot about the UK and Canada by looking up wait times, for visits and surgeries both.
Another thing you probably don't know, most states have their own healthcare specifically for citizens of their state that pay in, which is essentially emergency insurance that guarantees you wont pay a dime over 2000+.
The US Government made the current employer system by requiring health insurance for full time workers which strangled off lots of private plans.
If it was simply about lowering cost for the average person, you might just make a law requiring a doctors visit to also be payable in cash, and require a detailed receipt for every service performed or good delivered, and allow medical boards to give out their own qualifications and not prohibit doctors from working unless they go through the expensive AMA schools (which in turn squeezes the supply of doctors which increases demand)
You also fail to mention that the average person in the US pays about 30-40% of their income in combined taxes, and that the average canadian, uk person, pays upwards of 60% in combined taxes.
Do you think most americans want to double their tax burden so that we can turn the doctors office into the same bumbling mismanagement as our public schools, of our dmvs.

Brave move man, I live in central-eastern Europe and every time I was talking with someone from west-Europe countries they have had a picture of East like cold, post-Soviet and ugly countries but the truth is kinda opposite. Also few times I've been in France, Germany and must admit that overall I felt less secure than in my country and I'm not speaking about language barrier.

As someone who lives in Serbia for almost 50 years, you've missed one crucial thing, in eastern Europe corruption is a part of your life, everyone is corrupt, from a president to a janitor, and that is the main reason why those countries have much worse economics and are not good to live in. I get it is nice to have great earnings working online for US companies and live where everything is cheaper, but investing in those countries is not a good thing because of the corruption everywhere, you have to be corrupt to have a company there, it's how it works in eastern Europe. Also, governors son can run you over on a crosswalk and don't get a day in a jail. Basically lawlessness and corruption runs the country.
This is true also in SE Asia. But here's the thing, in the USA only the top officials are allowed to be corrupt, normal people are thrown in a cage. In other countries, everyone can participate.

I can only speak about Ukraine and not Eastern Europe as a whole, but it's less about corruption being an integral part of life, but more about social systems and institutions being rigged to favor the corruption opportunities. If you REALLY wish to do things by the book, you can still do that, it's just much harder since you have to navigate rather complicated sets of legislation and unwritten rules and customs, which to a foreigner can be rather confusing. I've been in my fair share of situations where police caught people for speeding and decided not to pursue the matter with issuing speeding tickets because the drivers were adamant about getting proper paperwork and knew their rights, so the policemen just could not appear imposing enough to ask for a bribe. Pretty much the same goes for general bureaucratic institutions, schools, universities, even goddamn tax office (to be fair, can't include hospitals here, though without going into much detail, the current situation with healthcare may actually be favoring foreign citizens, weirdly enough). However, you do need the right mindset and knowledge to pull that off, plenty of simple folks just can't for a variety of reasons.

The netherlands is a good option if you speak english (and even better if you are willing to learn dutch, its not hard), if you speak german, go to germany and just build up your savings, and then see whats there. If you can, go with studying at the same time, it wont be easy, but preferable, if you want to have a chence at not breaking your own body in labour jobs later down the road, plus will be easier to get a better starting job in any country if you have a good education/certification in a good field (IT is a pretty good option).
As a real American native American, I moved to the UK at 14, I love it here gotcha great education free health care and now own businesses

@@mong4491 Here we speak two languages: Ukrainian and Russian. The first one is more common, the second one is more universal, so I would recommend everyone to learn Russian. It's incredibly hard, but if you set your standard low, than you'll be able to communicate on a basic level after some time of learning. Generally speaking, we know some English, but don't expect too much

I'm from Serbia and the only problem here is our weak economy, but for those that have money this isn't a bad place to live contrary to what both westerners and my generation growing up was led to believe. It's safe, the only crime i or my family experienced is getting my bike stolen cause i left it outside one too many times, people are friendly IMO, there's no terror attacks, natural disasters,people are more traditional and conservative but in a good way, they value family, tradition, hard-work, honesty etc.
The cities aren't overcrowded, even Belgrade doesn't have more than 2mil, everything in Europe is basically an hour plane ride away, Greece,Italy,Germany if you want to go on holidays etc.
The food is amazing but i might be biased, the girls are beautiful but our guys are very tall and big as well so you have some stiff competition here, but if i was an American earning 100k remotely, i'd basically live here like a king

I mean yeah it's not that bad, but it depends on where you live in the country. The worst crime I witnessed and was a victim to is getting my bike stolen, in addition to getting all the locks in my basement broken and stolen. I also witnessed quite a few drug deals. I mean yeah, it's a 100 times safer than San Francisco, LA, New York and Chicago but still... You could run into some problematic people.
And there are some natural disasters - floodings. Again, not comparable to some places in the US like Texas or Florida, but it can still cause a considerable amount of damage...
But I agree with everything else. I'm actually kinda glad I was born here and not somewhere else.

Would disagree with your second point, it really depends on your social status. The higher you go, the higher stakes at the wealth rat race become. And even in middle and lower classes, people tend to blow small fortunes on ceremonies like weddings and funerals for precisely the same reason you mentioned - appearing to your social circles more well-off than you actually are. Not saying absolutely everyone is into it, but it is quite common.

I lived in the Philippines where it's hard to find people who can't speak English but despite being able to easily communicate with most people after living there for 7 years I met maybe 2 Filipinos who I was able to "bond" with. Finding a place that fits who you are as a person is so important. Ultimately I moved to Brazil because everyone I met through my work that was from there were so great so I knew id probably fit right in there (despite safety nonsense) and sure enough I did. And like you mentioned at the end of your video, moving to a place where 100% of the people are your type is, ya.... sound judgment lol. That said Ukrainians are cool and my experience with Russians is awesome too but I just can't handle winters anymore for the rest of my life.

I lived in the city in the 1970's, and it was really great. I moved across the bay, but still commuted in until 4 years ago. In that time, I've only gone in into the City half a dozen times. Honestly, if I never go there again, that would be fine. It's dirty, expensive, and way overrated as a city. I can't believe people still visit it as tourists.

The plan seems to be to vaccinate the vulnerable first. It's supposed to be voluntary. I would expect the situation to stabilize only in summer and restart next fall. I lived in SF for many, many years and moved to Germany in late 2019. I had been planning my move for well over a year. When I moved, Germans were perplexed as to why I would make such a permanent move away from the USA. Now, I think they are beginning to understand. Americans thought my move would not be permanent. They thought I'd be back already even though I said it was not a temporary move. But, I think they get it now, too.
When I first moved to Italy 20 years ago, Italians were very similar. They would ask me WHY I would move from the States. Now rarely, if at all, I am asked why I would want to move from the USA.

I’ve been a green card holder 🇺🇸 for 6 years and moved back to Ukraine. I was depressed all the time in the USA. Didn’t feel safe physically and financially. Couldn’t get proper health care even thought it was covered by health insurance, the diversity of culture and healthy food was poor. I lived in 6 states and none of them felt like home :(

I'm from Serbia, and hearing that you moved to my home country seems ironic since the majority of youths wants to leave the country on every opportunity which presents itself. In fact a good friend of mine moved to Germany under a month ago. On the other, just this summer, I met a number of people from the US who have ties to Serbia including another friend, who may even permanently move here.

You barely touched on the social aspect of the US. The people here are unfriendly, cliquey, fake, flaky, and very hard to befriend. This is especially true in the West (I live in the Phoenix metro area).

Woah, I witnessed the same thing during my last visit to SF. A guy walks into walkgreens, loads up an entire backpack full of drinks, and waltzes right out. I even pointed it out to the manager _as it was happening_ and he literally just shrugged and said, "It's not worth the risk." What's more, there were a dozen or so cops all congregated at the corner just a block away. I told them about the incident moments after it happened, and they just said to me, "Welcome to San Francisco."

Aaron Jack, your video is really an inspiration to me! Ironically, my great grandfather Itzig is from Odessa, Ukraine and whose last name I bear. It is so funny for me to think how he fled the hardships of Ukraine and living under the draconian rule of Czar (and later the Bolsheviks) to come to the land of opportunity , the USA. Now, his own great grandson is considering fleeing the USA for the same reason and maybe going to Ukraine. A lot of my family comes from Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Poland. I have considered moving to Eastern Europe and it would be easy for me to blend in. I have travelled the world and understand the challenges with adapting to cultures. I am a nomad at heart and really eager to leave the USA. I actually love my country (the USA), but hate what is happening to it. You sound like a fellow Libertarian minded person like me. I grew up in Southern Oregon and frequently went to San Francisco over the years and it was always a very dirty, sketchy and grimey place. I haven't been there in over a decade, but I hear it is just turning into a real cesspool and yet this is the epicenter of America (and the world to a degree) IT industry. I was living in Seattle and fled the Pacific Northwest for the same reasons you describe about San Francisco. There was too much crime, drug addicts, homeless people and the government mismanagement and allowance for the activities has created a hostile and lawless like living environment.
I am a software developer of 20+ years who is having trouble finding work, because I was an entrepreneur and had a small medical type software business I helped build and ran. I took a major paycut doing this and regret I didn't go off earlier and do other things.
Anyway, I am now watching your videos and really inspired. I loathe having to work at a big corporation, be a slave to the managers and not be able to utilize my software skills to their fullest. My background is C# and .Net , but I am more of a back-end developer. However, I am open to learning new things. Currently, I am striving to become a DevOps engineer as I feel it is a high demand and niche field in IT and not overly saturated like front-end /full-stack web development has become and you have more autonomy in a DevOps position.
Even though software is my passion and its what I want to do in the long -run I really rather only do software development as a freelancer or in my own business pursuits.
Your story is inspirational and I like your assessment about niche technologies for freelancing that are high demand like eCommerce frameworks such as Shopify. I wonder what your opinions are about other higher-level/more pre-packaged frameworks such as SalesForce (for CRM, ERP, etc). I know SalesForce probably has much more demands in coding than Shopify. eCommerce, esp with Covid is taking the world by storm. It sounds like a lucrative field.
Even though I don't particularly love React or Javascript, I feel for a more specialized area of development, such as expanding the power and featuers of Shopify, it could really shine. I also like React Native for similar reasons, native -like cross platform features with a single framework/language.
I wish I could have a chat with you as I feel you are the kind of developer I wish I could have met in person and has similar goals in life as me. Unfortunately , I am getting old now at almost, but I still have big dreams and a younger heart. I will keep following your videos and signed up for your newsletter. If you are hosing a bootcamp, I doubt I Could afford it now, but always open to learning more.
Man, you landed in a country with a civil war going on. It has gone through 3 revolutions in past 30 years. One of the highest corruption rates in Europe. So if you seek safety, I would rather think of Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Scandinavia. They’re more expensive but much more stable. Personally, I’m thinking of moving there after finishing my university CS program in 4-5yrs.

Mostly you are right, but you should look on this from the point of “history of Ukraine”. Our country was the part of russian empire and then the part of ussr so the mentality of people is still like soviet especially older people 40-50+, but we got a very strong culture, our own language and a lot of writers and poets who was against russia and discrimination of ukrainian people and all they gave the big impact especially now on people’s minds, that ukrainians is not russians. There is no way to fully escape from russian influence for a such short period of time, but the main stages are already done. Because of this hybrid war we lost almost all of the russian markets which was the main place to sell our goods and now we should “bring our standards” to the EU quality and this is not so easy when you got a lot of corrupted soviet nomenclature in the government. Because of all that we don’t even have a real opposition politics yet so people had choose Zelenskiy (which was the comedy actor), just to end with the old government.
But a lot of changed to the positive side. Now Ukrainians can travel to EU without a visa, a lot of our people goes to Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, for a work but not moved there. All the money that they earned they send to their families in Ukraine, as much as they bringing a “piece of EU mentality” here, to their children and its impact a lot. Also we don’t have the internet censure like in russia where government can put you in jail just for a meme agains the politics, or christian religion. The police won’t shoot you like in the US for example, and if that happens this will be a main event of whole country for a week. You will never find a drug addicted people on the streets because of the police and very negative attitude from ukrainians so they are all sitting in their homes or in far forests. So if you just a regular guy who earns from 2k$+ you might just enjoy your life here, not worrying about the safety, and for a bonus we have the most beautiful girls in the world (i visited almost all of the eu countries, us, canada, so i can say it for real) and I think you all know about that :)
