The show was already going downhill before the addition of Randy. But the main problem was that he tried to replace both Eric AND Kelso, despite both characters being radically different. The fact that characters repeatedly gushed over how supposedly perfect he was didn't do much to endear him to fans.
Yup. Season 7 was already losing its steam, and then for season 8, they just murdered everything that made the show enjoyable. New writers was a baddddd choice
I really liked the show, not so much the last season. I grew up watching the show. Danny f×cked the show up for me. Was the cool rebel on the show but in real life his a low life piece of shi+.
One thing I didn't understand, with Eric gone instead of replacing him with Charlie or Randy didn't anyone have the idea of replacing him with Mitch? Think about it, he was Eric's rival, had a similar mentality both being geeks, and he was also was after Donna. Plus the character was already established in the show in several episodes. Maybe the writers didn't consider this or maybe Seth Green didn't want to do it? Who knows.
@@dustywaynemusic6297 Seth Green was a movie star level celebrity at the time, in particular, the Austin Powers movies made him a hot ticket for quite awhile. I just finished season 8 and I feel like he wasn’t even needed. I thought he was unnecessary and he didn’t bring anything. Although I didn’t hate him the only thing was him and Donna relationship.
I’ve been rewatching That 70s Show and I’m considering just stopping after season 7. Between Eric and Donna breaking up, Kelso and Eric being gone, and Randy’s addition in general I really don’t wanna sit through all that again.
Randy wasn't the problem of season 8...but damn did he highlight it. Season 7 was a massive downgrade. First two episodes show Eric pawning Donna's ring (which is like the antithesis of one of the previous episodes and why Jackie and Eric really do become friends. On top of that like you mention, the horrible season 8 writers telling us every two minutes how great Randy was makes you kind of not want to like him. That's what side characters do to a new character that the main character hates. He was also a clear replacement character. He should've been included through most of season 7 as a side character that started hanging out with the group more as season 8 came on, and also never paired with Donna. The guy should've had his own girlfriend separate from the group.
Instead of Randy being some new guy, he should of been Eric's cousin living with his aunt and uncle so there would be a reason why the gang hangout in the basement and Eric's house. And instead of trying to be two characters in one and trying to kill two birds with one stone, he should of been a complete different character. Maybe like an skater or a punk rocker. But it is what it is.
i think a punk character could’ve been interesting considering the genre really started booming in the mid 70s but it would’ve been a contrast to the psychedelic rock thing they had going with the group, and i agree with the basement it was strange they all still hung out there after eric left and it never really seemed to be addressed.
When I first watched That 70s Show a decade ago I didn't hate Randy, and a decade later I still don't but I do think it was weird to have him and Kelso around at the same time. I feel like it would have been better if Randy and Eric were seen together instead and if Randy was revealed to be Eric's cousin instead of some random guy that hangs out with Eric's friends.
Maybe if Randy was brought in for a bit longer before Kelso and Eric left we could have got to know him a little more before they left. Instead of just placing a piece of tape over a massive leaking pipe.
I'm getting the feeling of deja vu, like I've watched this same person make the same video multiple times, that he's gotten as lazy as the writers of that 70's show in later seasons.
Randy never fit into That 70s show. He was always perfect and was the best at everything. Even Red liked him and he isn't supposed to like anyone and Bob was OK with randy dating Donna and sleeping with her meanwhile Bob never liked Eric being with his daughter or sleeping with her
Yeah, he felt like when your childhood friends met a new guy and he tried to be one of you immediately and it just feels weird because you've known each other for over a decade and he is brand new
Love your channel. Especially That 70s Show autopsy breaking down the game film post mortem coverage. It's mandatory PTSD group therapy and grief counseling for me. Thanks, Doc.
I guess the writers knew that they had really messed it up with the introduction of Randy Pearson when Randy was noticeably not invited to Red and Kitty’s New Year’s Eve party in “That ‘70s Show’s” final episode.
Hey! The last few seasons of Community had Prentiss from Criminal Minds, Mike from Breaking Bad & The 'Franks n Beans' guy from There's something about Mary! They tried!
Every show reaches it's endpoint. It was a bandaid on a stab wound. I think with them all getting older and the 70s decade wrapping Up, it was time to say goodbye
Unpopular opinion: I didn't mind Randy and Donna together, even though it didn't work, the main reason is because I never liked Donna, she was always my least favorite character, and I always felt her flaws were never taken into consideration. I also hated the way she'd treat Eric a lot of the time. Donna is a hypocrite who uses feminism to get her way in an argument or some other aspect of her life when she has shown she's not above acting like a stereotypical woman if it benefits her somehow. The fact that she often overacts to some of the smaller things Eric has done and treats him like crap even when he really hasn't done anything wrong and never gets called out on it doesn't help. One of the worst offenders in that regard happens in Season 6 where she gets pissed at Eric having a good time with Jackie, even though she was the one who suggested it hoping he wouldn't enjoy it! In another episode she gets angry with Eric for making plans with his friends without checking with her first. At the end of the episode, she makes him promise that he'll always check with her before making time with his friends. Eric then asks Donna if she needs his permission to hang out with her friends, to which she replies "no" and leaves to go see a friend. And in another episode, she yells at Eric for going on two dates with another girl while she and Eric were broken up. Donna, meanwhile, had slept with Casey Kelso around the same time. Also calls Eric out for his insecurity and not trusting her in "Radio Daze" after she announced to the whole town (including the DJ who was clearly attracted her based on calling her "Hot Donna") that she was single and never bothered to talk to him about it. While this wasn't the first time Eric had been jealous, she behaved the same way to him in "Eric's Panties". The show tries to display Eric as an idiotic pervert at times who believes too much in old fashioned, but more often than not he makes far more convincing arguments than the writers intended, especially when some of the points Donna tries to make borderline on flatout domestic/emotional abuse. When Eric breaks up with Donna, the show treats it as though it was his fault and everyone believes Donna actually broke up with him despite Eric's protests. Then when Donna breaks up with Casey and immediately wants to get back together with Eric, his refusal is treated as selfish and idiotic by Red and Kitty. Regardless what one thinks of Eric's old-fashioned values, the fact is that he and Donna had very different visions for the future and if neither was willing to compromise for the other then it's for the best they broke up, and when Donna wanted to hook up again she was clearly on the rebound from Casey (which Eric called her on), and none of the underlying problems that had led to them breaking up in the first place had been resolved. Donna who is presented as one of the most mature and rational characters on the show constantly acts like a self righteous hypocrite in addition to treating Eric horribly even when he didn't do anything wrong.
That 70s Show should've ended with season 6. Instead of calling off the wedding, they could've had Eric and Donna get married and move to Africa (which would've made sense cause Donna was the main one who wanted to travel and experience life outside of Point Place). Then have Hyde and Jackie get engaged, Kelso focus on being a parent and Fez finally tell everyone where the F he's from.
Whoa, disagree about his comment of the new characters in Community. Jonathan Banks as Hickey was really good and I appreciated they didn’t attempt to just make him like Pierce. I didn’t watch the final season yet, but come on, one of those new characters is played by Keith David, so at the very least he’ll be a joy to listen to as that man’s voice is objectively awesome.
I’m surprised to hear someone say this! Community is my comfort show and I’ve rewatched a lot but only the first 4 seasons. I can’t stand to watch after both Chevy chase and Donald glover leave.
No he didn't. And this is an unpopular opinion but Randy was actually a great character and I wish he joined before Eric and Kelso disappeared. The only reason season 8 was shite was due to poor writing and too many turning points for characters.
I think the main problem with randy is that he just had one season. A lot of characters aren't really "themselves" until the next season. Randy didn't have room to grow on us. Maybe he never would, but how many shows are there where when we rewatch the first season the characters aren't quite the characters yet? Michael scott was david brent in season 1 of the office.
Season 7 wasn't that good but Season 8 was really, really bad & had little chance. Randy stood almost no chance with a bad season & having to replace both Eric & Kelso was a bad idea
As far as I know the show was supposed to end with the previous season but once they got a new season they had to change those plans. At least they didn’t recast Eric with Josh Meyers as that was supposedly the original plan.
If anything they could bring him back and have him be Nate’s dad in that 90s show just like how there might be speculation that Gwen could be Fez or Hyde’s daughter.
I saw you did an episode on smallville, I was wondering in the future could you do episode on Jar El. I never liked what they did with his character but was curious on your thoughts how the show portrayed him.
I agree after Eric and Calso left the show was losing itself and that character Randy just made every episode he came out in worse and they made him seem like the guy that can't do no wrong which was a mistake on the creators part.
I disagree on Community. Those late additions were all pretty good. Wish the guy from breaking bad that voiced Gordon in Arkham Knight could've stuck around for season 6
I think all the Community additions were great. The old characters could never be "replaced" but they didn't really try to do so. They made them very distinct, rather than copy and pasted personalities of the previous characters.
I think he was a fun character and Josh Myers was super charismatic, it was the forced relationship with Donna, and Hyde and Jackie breaking up that ruined it.
When are you gonna talk about 90's show? I feel like the general opinion was that it wasn't awful, but no where near as good as 70's show. Red Kitty and the rest of the original cast carry the show and a lot of people say it feels like a Disney show.
I felt it was already going downhill without Eric. But still tolerable. However, that Randy dude made it worse. I have 70s show on DVD, and I love it but, I never watch beyond season six. The early ones were awesome.
I actually found the late stage community characters to be really good. Hickey was a good new take on an old timer (wish he stuck around for s6) and frankie i thought added a fresh dynamic. They didnt try to replace troy and that was smart. Elroy was the only one who cane off weak to me. I just never quite got a hold on his character. Unlike Frankie who you could understand joining the crew.
This egg is shaped like Randy's head. I honestly think the warning signs for this show's end came long before Randy. The breakup in season 4 then the overcorrect was a mortal wound for this show in my eyes.
I feel like the show started to die after Eric stood Donna up at the wedding. It seemed like the whole show was building to them getting married. I feel like him standing her up seemed so out of character for him and really broke the over arching narrative the show was trying to tell. After that event, that 70’s show became a coming of age story without the coming of age. It felt like there was no longer a purpose for the show.
Honestly it was a combination of things. Even if Randy wasn’t a part of the show, the jokes weren’t landing, characters we already knew were totally out of character, and not having Kelso and especially Eric really made the show feel without purpose. Randy didn’t kill that 70s show. It was simply a case of a show that went on longer than it needed to (and the new writers on season 8 certainly didn’t help)
I’d say his character definitely put the nail in the coffin, it became blantantly clear the show had NO IDEA where to take series once he strung along. He’s such a fever dream of a character, he had no long term impact or relevance to the characters nor story, he was just there to fill up Eric and Kelso’s spot.
I don't love or hate randy. If he was added as a side character a few years before he got pulled to the main cast it would have worked better. Although I still want a comment in that 90s show saying he had a good life instead of ignoring him like they did with Hyde.
I think a big thing is every character of the main group have very distinct personalities from eachother with strengths and weaknesses while Randy was kind of the sitcom Gary Stew. He's just upbeat and likeable with no faults. "Cool nice guy" is not a character trait, it's just boring and pointless.
He Honestly Wasant That Bad! People Are Just Dramatic About It Because Of Erik! Randy Was Really Good With Donna, I Think If Eric And Kelso Never Left And Randy Still Be Apart Of It, I Don't Think He Would Be As Hated As Much. Plus He's Hot🎉
Randy could make a good rival to Eric on that 90’s show, but it’s a 1 sided rivalry. Randy is nice to Eric , but Eric hates him because of his past with Donna.
Randy Pearson was the WORST! He's irredeemably AWFUBLE! And THAT, Vee Infuso, is EXACTLY why he killed That '70s Show! Everybody's favorite '90s sitcom set in the '70s! Enough said!
No, hiring writers and showrunners for the last two seasons that had little sitcom and showrunning experience, were hired anyway, given cart blanche to take the show in any creative direction they saw fit. And with very little to no oversight. These extremely green showrunners behind the scenes showed an arrogance and misplaced sense of confidence and uncompromising stubbornness and thin skinned ego to cling to any idea no matter how irrefutably bad they were, and they were mostly horrendously bad, and Slim Pickins ride or die nuke warhead straddle that show killer idea all the way into a mushroom cloud sized annihilation of everything that came before and anything that could've gone after if they were reigned in or exposed for the I'll fit and creative cancer they were. This 'creative' team out their own bias and personal likes and hates above anything the actors, the shows overall inherent core value system and foundation in favor of putting in place things that contradicted characters motivations and who they were as people just because they didn't like certain characters so changed them to personality traits they found funny to them and their skill set could write, which was less a low bar, than no bar. They didn't listen to fans and then do their own thing anyway. No. They didn't listen to begin with. They were only concerned with doing exactly what they wanted every given time. And that would change on a dime like a room full of HDHD kids off their meds given the keys to the kingdom. They burned Rome down in a season of incompetent lazy indifferent selfish 'work.' The undoing of Hyde and Jackie that had series rejuvenation powers so strong and limitless potential, they could've had a spin off series all their own after the legacy series ended. But, they reverse coursed it so amateurishly and bush league level avoidance by pretending it was never in the continuity, they killed brand confidence, any expansion of said IP and spin off brand promise and the legacy institution itself. All because of petty decisions so innate like they broke up this uber character rich couple for the mere bone headed reason they just didn't like the pairing because they just really didn't like the Jackie character so not so subconsciously did Kunis dirty by sabotaging her character and show career sinking her week by week tied to this dead weight anchor of horrible character assassination of a character. They were a somewhat anomaly to the Hollywood television world playbook in the early nauts. Now it's the system in place run amok as an institution and business model of driving fans away and shows into the ground.
Randy was a bad character that was ill designed fro the beginning. But no, he didn't kill the show. That show was on it's way downhill fast before he showed up.
I dont think Randy was that bad it was the show as a whole, he was just another bad part of it, no hate to the actor, the writers drove the whole show into the ground
Nah, it was two actors very stupidly leaving a ridiculously successful series for their own selfish potential gains that was the real problem. Frankly their careers after the series haven't until maybe very recently for Topher, been that great either. No, being a replacement for Charlie Sheen on one of the worst series ever made along with a couple of bomb comedy films is not what I'd consider successful. So don't even try.
Disagree with you about the community stuff. Season 5 and 6 were great and better then 4. Frankie, Hickey and Elroy were all great additions to the cast
The show was already going downhill before the addition of Randy. But the main problem was that he tried to replace both Eric AND Kelso, despite both characters being radically different. My thing was… how is Eric gone and the whole gang is just chilling in the foreman’s basement.
he better not kill that 90's show
This egg is kind of shaped like Randy's head. *cracks it into a bowl*
You should do an episode on seven from married with children
my brain blocked this character out of my brain oof
It was dead before he got there
This egg is shaped like Randy's head.
I thought Frankie and Buzz were great additions to the later seasons of Community.
I think a big thing is every character of the main group have very distinct personalities from eachother with strengths and weaknesses while Randy was kind of the sitcom Gary Stew. He's just upbeat and likeable with no faults. "Cool nice guy" is not a character trait, it's just boring and pointless.
Say what you want about Randy. But at least he never did horrible things to women like Hyde (Danny Masterson) did
I honestly didn't mind Randy, I was hoping to see him in that 90s show
So would I. Hopefully as the biological father of Leia Foreman.
Paul Rudd in Friends is one of the few examples
He Honestly Wasant That Bad! People Are Just Dramatic About It Because Of Erik! Randy Was Really Good With Donna, I Think If Eric And Kelso Never Left And Randy Still Be Apart Of It, I Don't Think He Would Be As Hated As Much. Plus He's Hot🎉
Randy could make a good rival to Eric on that 90’s show, but it’s a 1 sided rivalry. Randy is nice to Eric , but Eric hates him because of his past with Donna.
He reminds me of a real life Poochie
They should've set him off to his home planet
Yeah…..the show’s executives should’ve just ended That 70’s Show after the 7th Season when Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher Left….
No it should have ended earlier. You can't kill that which is already dead
If i could kill any series character, Randy is at the top of my list
well insert mr crabs "i like money" meme
This egg is kinda shaped like Randy's head
You also cannot usurp Eric and hang out at his house
If the writers have to tell you the character is perfect, he's not perfect.
Randy Pearson was the WORST! He's irredeemably AWFUBLE! And THAT, Vee Infuso, is EXACTLY why he killed That '70s Show! Everybody's favorite '90s sitcom set in the '70s! Enough said!
This egg is kinda shaped like Randy's head 🥚🍳👍🏼
It didn't help, though I will give a hot take in that Randy was too good for Donna.
How bout the fact he’s gotta be Leias dad, the series finale ends 1979 and she is born seven months later Donna is already pregnant in the finale.
Unless she was a premature baby that was a major plot hole for That 90’s Show
No, hiring writers and showrunners for the last two seasons that had little sitcom and showrunning experience, were hired anyway, given cart blanche to take the show in any creative direction they saw fit.
How long did this take to write
Separate paragraphs, please.
Seth Meyers crawled so Josh Meyers could crawl slowly and eventually lurch on the floor.
You know what would definitely get the viewers?
Long form Frasier discussions.
Not really. The show was going to end with season 8 anyway.
The show was pratically over when he joined so I didn't really care too much when Randy joined
What is your opinion on DCU new batman movie having the Robins already being Nightwing etc and Damian being the Robin?
No, the writers killed "That 70's Show".
No. It was dead before he showed up
Disagree with you about the community stuff. Season 5 and 6 were great and better then 4. Frankie, Hickey and Elroy were all great additions to the cast
Greed killed That 70s Show. It should’ve ended in Season 7, or even 6. But no. The network got greedy.
Yes, it was like “M*A*S*H” staying on for too long and compounding the mistake by then starting the forgettable “After-M*A*S*H.”
