Waste place, Nature’s first green is gold Her hardest hue to hold Her early leafs a flower; But only so an hour. Then the leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay -Robert Frost I knew one day scrutinizing about that one poem said in the outsiders would come in handy!
The Breaking Bad approach is so much better. End the show when the story is over. If you want to do more, make more stories in the same universe, like El Camino and Better Call Saul. That way, if any of them suck (hard to imagine with Vince Gilligan), it doesn't retroactively taint the good parts.
Breaking Bad did it the right way, leaving you craving more. I watched all 6 Seasons of Better Call Saul before ever watching Breaking Bad. And the pitch perfect ending of BCS made me wanna watch BB, and after the ending of BB, I imminently went to watch El Camino. It's all really well written and presented in these manageable chunks, even if binge-watching all of them. You just know that when watching BB, Gilligan maybe did not know how to get to the end at first, but he knew the show will end. And Better Call Saul ended up being one of my favorite TV shows of all time.
Drew is much more suited as the deuteragonist in the story. His sarcastic quips and cynical outlook can help in contrasting with Danny’s happy and pure outlook on the world. Really something magical could be produced from that folks.
YES!!! i was literally so confused and then when jackie and fez got together i was like “what???? but what???? about jackie and hyde????? how rude of??? you to do to me??????????”
I think that Bojack Horseman is an interesting case when talking about endings. Netflix warned the creator that they might decline new seasons without giving him any sort of warning or anything to be able to wrap up the show; so the show is written in a way that any season finale could be the series finale But in the end they actually told him that the 6th season was gonna be the last, so that's why it feels like an actual conclussion to the show
@@GPoh_99 I'm pretty sure that he said Bojack was supposed to have maybe 1 or 2 more seasons to completely wrap up the show with it's natural conclusion before they cancelled it. Also, he had a previous agreement with Netflix about only doing the show if he could continue it to what he deemed a natural conclusion, only to get hit by a cancellation without warning. The only reason why we even got that last season was because Waxberg and the actors _literally begged_ Netflix for the opportunity to at least finish it somewhat properly. That last season was supposed to be longer, with a true final season following it, to make for a truly satisfying ending. I think the ending was fine, but I can totally see how two seasons would've been better to finish it properly.
@@lukewarmwaterr I didn't witness a single season that was less enjoyable than the last, but that's just me. I am glad it ended when it did, though. There's dignity in ending things before the premise is run into the ground, even if it wasn't really their choice. But I don't think they went out on a weak note in any way.
@@GPoh_99 BoJack had a very satisfying ending but I could definitely have gone for more if only because the characters did evolve and grow, even BoJack as much as he just goes over the same self destructive cycle changed a lot, so it definitely could have gone longer, I wouldn't say no to a post-prison season, but maybe the show doesn't work if BoJack has genuinely become a better person.
I reckon this is a good idea for ways to do things, but if a show sets off from the beginning to achieve a point that’s an ultimate goal, then you HAVE to have the right pacing. You can’t blow through a 20 episode season for the plot of sometjinf that should take 7 seasons. Imagine if they escaped the island on Lost on the end of the like, 10th episode. That would be LAME! It takes buildup! I’m not saying it was justified to go on as long as it did, just making an example.
Strange, I thought it felt like they ended it justttt too soon. Like I think it could've gone maybe a few more episodes... The most perfect pacing out of most existing shows though. It's hard to get pacing that is absolutely perfect for everyone I guess, but still such a beautiful show!
They ended it at the perfect time, after the point where things could still be explored greatly but before it started to drag. Ended after long enough to give us enough great episodes, and knew to end before it spoiled.
The Good Place is a great example of ending at the right time. They had 4 seasons, and even though people wanted more, the writers admitted that they did not have anymore story to tell.
I thoroughly enjoyed their wrap up of the show in the last few episodes. Really amazing and satisfying. But yes, the last season and a half was not as good as the beginning. Not to say that it was bad at all, but there was a decline
Gravity falls intentionally ended after only 2 seasons despite it’s heavy following, because they didn’t want to destroy the essence of the show. Which is really cool
Gravity Falls was probably the first time I had to grapple with letting a show go, but I’m actually glad that it ended when it did. A few of my friends have suggested that they should make a sequel miniseries or maybe a spin off on a different channel following Ford’s adventures through dimensions or Dipper and Mabel as adults, but I think it’s not the road to go down. Honestly, I’m fine with what we have, including the spin-off comics and books.
True. I would like to see more of Ford cause of the way the arc of the show affected his screen time- maybe through a 5-7 episode mini-series that’s independent enough to not effect the rest of the show (basically all filler, but with Ford).
Exactly I'm said it had to end but it's what had to happen to keep the quality of the amazing story , just like the good place its ending was already planned and had it end after foure seasons when they could have milked another season
Breaking Bad is probably the exact perfect length for a drama show. That entire show feels like every last scene was planned before it even began. Never feels like they change course in the slightest through 60+ episodes. And they left enough room for an equally long (arguably better) spinoff that also completely justifies its length. I appreciate a show that just tells the story that needs to be told.
Elise Gleason lol you know there are people born in the 50s and later, right? My dad was born in 1955 so he was a teen - early 20s during the 70s which is perfectly reasonable.
How I Met Your Mother is an example of a show that had a concrete ending plan (and partially shot) early on in the show’s run, but the show stretched on so the original planned ending didn’t fit like it did before, but the creators were so attached to that ending they still used it despite it no longer making a satisfying conclusion.
I was just gonna say the same thing. They dragged it out to far and I was attached to the characters and they ended it in a bad way. Especially dedicating a whole season to Barney and Robin’s wedding then having them get divorced in the last episode.
The Good Place is the most recent example of a show ending perfectly for me. From the beginning they planned a story to run for 4 seasons, and that's what they stuck to
The audacity of that 70s show continuing on after toper left is absurd. There is no show without Eric. He's the quintessential character. He's the glue that holds that friend group together. It was ridiculous in season 8 to still have them hanging out at Eric's house after he was gone.
That 70s Show is my favorite sitcom. I’ve watched through it entirely at least 20 times, I just constantly restart it when I’m done. (I’ve also enjoyed Netflix’s That 90s Show.) I don’t hate the final season. I feel so bad for Josh Meyer, that people despise Randy. I find Randy to be a decent character who fits in well. I think where they fucked up was not keeping Hyde and Jackie together. They could’ve been the glue to distract from Eric being gone. They’re my favorite couple, and Hyde is just a great character you really root for to be better and have a good life. Jackie and Fez was the most off putting, bad taste in the mouth to the viewers and I think it really skews the likability of that last season.
@@TheMightySnul I grew up with That 70s show and it's always been in my top 3 favorite shows. I Think the last couple of seasons were extremely lackluster, and forced. In my opinion It all started to go south when they got a new actress to play Lorie, Hyde got a new dad (who happened to be black 🤦)and an annoying sister charecter, Donna got blonde hair, kelso became a cop and a father (than eventually left all together)..stuff like that. The first 5 seasons were amazing. The last season was horrendous. I personally *hated* the Randy charecter .
@@TheMightySnul I also always really liked Jackie and Hyde's relationship. Breaking them up and having her end up with fez was one of the worst decisions the writers made.
What do you mean ? I think cyborg Bryce fits perfectly in a plot where a girl killed herself. And not only did they make him a cyborg they also tried to redeem him in season 3.
Interestingly enough, Ricky Gervais ended the original "The Office" (UK) after only two seasons and a couple of additional special episodes because he loved what he and Stephen Merchant had created and didn't want to run it into the ground. If you leave it up to fans, they will say, "Keep going!"...until they hate you.
It clearly wasn't boring otherwise there would not be an American adaption of it...which had Gervais consulting on it. Although I can understand if it's not for you.
Fans should never get to dictate what happens with a project. You can’t always please all the fans with demands so it’s best to just make the story you originally wanted to make.
I’m certain That 70’s Show season 8 was some fantasy Fez made up while high. That would explain his sudden shift to becoming a ladies’ man, and ending up with Jackie, who he was slightly obsessed with since the beginning. At least I hope it was, because that gives me a reason to ignore its existence.
“so for the sake of drama, pam becomes addicted to cough syrup, and that puts a real toll on her marriage so jim divorces her and then realises he’s been bisexual this whole time and ends up with kevin, who accidentally cooks their daughter into a pot of chilli. also toby leaves the show to be in spider-man 4.” are you kidding me i’d watch that
One of my favorite examples of a show ending at the right time is Brooklyn Nine Nine. The last season was all about wrapping up the varying storylines and I loved it. It was so cool to see the writers be able to actually do what they wanted to do with the story
I mean their fate was slightly different, in the sense that "That 70s show" had already run its course and could have ended with two or three more episodes to wrap things up nicely instead of several additional shitty seasons. Game of thrones on the other hand did need a season seven and a season eight, because the storyline was obviously still not finished. But they just managed to continually progress from below average to sickeningly bad, by hiring writers who obviously didn't care much about the source material and were just in it for the money.
Well game of thrones had a bad ending because the writers wanted to move on. HBO was willing to give them as many seasons as they wanted and even the author said that the show should have gone on two more seasons. They rushed 3 plot points that should have been 3 seasons into 1 season.
I feel like for the Office, from “Goodbye Michael” Dwight should’ve been manager, two more episodes of Andy and Erin actually liking and being in love, AARM (my favorite episode of all time), and then the year-jump to Dwight and Angela’s wedding. I think that would’ve been an amazing ending to the series. But I still really like the Office the way it is.
I like the office the way it is except for the mental breakdown Andy had when he quit Dunder mifflin went on the singing show and became an internet meme
One of my favourite show endings is over the garden wall. Even though its only ten episodes i feel like they ended it perfectly leaving enough room for interpretation but not too much to make the show feel incomplete. They created this magical world and explored it just enough to not ruin the mystery behind it.
JakobeyDaCooldud 13 reasons why didn’t need a season 2 or 3...she never got her justice and i don’t care about bryce...they should of just said they got raped and he would go to jail and it would have been great
i wish dwight became manager at the start of season 8 and then maybe season 8 ends with him losing it and then 9 is his redemption after being fired ala angela's entire redemption that season to mirror it and make it all feel worthwhile...i think the biggest issue is andy becoming manager deangelo and robert are all just bad choices the show made and then bringing in clark and plop and nellie and getting rid of kelly and ryan like wtf?...these are not good choices and it makes the show feel like a waste of time like 45+ episodes of that crap?......the show in season 8 feels like a parody at times the way season 7 started to feel like...and 9 just went all out with weird plots...some worked some didn't...to me if they just planned it out better it could of worked heck have a season 10 with dwight as manager married then have everyone slowly follow their dreams and leave the branch finally and end it with the doc ending parts of the finale and end it that way
@@looki24 tbh it feels like the office trying desperately to relate to the very young people of that time. It might've been ok at the time for those young people to watch but after a while it just doesn't age well.
The Good Place had a perfect ending. Could they have kept going? Sure. But it would have gotten stale. Even Season 3 got a little stale, in the sense of like "okay they're going to go for their plan but it's going to mess up somehow, then they'll have to make a new plan..." I think they ended it at the perfect time.
wierdmageddon was amazing. it was such a high quality, logical solution to gravity falls and i could write an in depth analysis on why that is my favorite show, largely due to the fact that it didn't stretch out too long, even if they could've.
I think Gravity Falls has the PERFECT ending. They did a lot with it, had character depth, ended it in a satisfying way, and didn’t ruin any characters. I still watch it to this day. They end the summer in their absolutely perfect 2 seasons. They could have extended it, but they didn’t and just tied the bow over a perfect series.
Gravity Falls really is the perfect series. Alex Hirsch had a vision and Disney let him do it, which is honestly surprising, since they usually stretch things out way longer than they have to for an extra dollar. Plus Gravjty Falls keeps on going after it ends, with all the shorts, special features, graphic novel, book, etc. There are always more secrets to unlock!
9:40 I would have absolutely LOVED to see an Office storyline that involved Pam & Jim breaking up because of her addiction to cough syrup, Kevin & Jim getting involved, and Kevin cooking their child. Who wouldn't?
the good place is the perfect example of a show that doesn’t go on too long. they could’ve gone on for far longer but the creators knew the show’s story had ended
Parks and rec ended the series summarizing how each characters life would play out without extending the show too long. You got to see everybody be happy and content
In my opinion, the office gets better after the first season. I love the office, but I really can’t understand people who watch the whole series 5+ times.
Betty Ravioli I don't get why anyone watches anythi g over and over if it's short. maybe anything over five seasons sure but other than that watching it over just ruins the fun for me.
I feel like everyone forgets Parks and Rec when they talk about great shows that ended strong. The show just ended showing how all the cast ended up a couple years later and left you on a high note knowing that many of them got to fulfill their dreams.
Totally agree with you, it’s my favorite tv show ending of all time. It perfectly complies a sad goodbye with a hopeful future and leaves the audience feeling satisfied.
YES!!! that’s one of the few shows that retained its signature quality and charm to the very end, while still allowing for its characters to develop into a graceful arch that showed positive growth by the finale. I really hate how parks was overshadowed by the office in its initial television run, because it really was mike schur’s best work as an overall show.
I think the best example of a show ending at the right time is Derry Girls. Yes I would have loved to get more, but (and I said this to my friend when we watched the last episode because she was annoyed it was over) I would rather get a satisfying ending that wraps up the characters' stories than have a show get stretched out until the characters are barely recognizeable.
That's why I love The Good Place so much. It just ended today and even though EVERYBODY would love to see more of the show, they decided that this was the exact story they wanted to tell, no ifs or buts
This video really brought up a lot of points that apply to good shows like The Good Place. Like keeping original characters, having great story lines, and not rushing the ending but not dragging it out too much either.
I feel like iCarly ended perfectly. They had went through pretty much their entire childhood, they had explained everything that needed to be explained, made all types of episodes and movies, and Carly was reunited with her dad.
I haven't seen it in so long, my only memories are of me being sick this one time and I saw an episode where someone was terrified of fruits and vegetables. I should probably watch that episode since I've no idea the context of that
Gravity falls. From the start Alex Hersh had a concrete plan of how the show was gonna go and when it was going to emd. When he got here, he ended the show, even though alot of fans were asking him to continue.
The best example of a show knowing when to go is "The Good Place". Not only did they know exactly the right time to leave, but the finale literally uses this as it's main theme.
I respectfully disagree with that. The show knew where to go, but did not take its time to build up to the finale. No sooner are the characters in the good place than a new huge problem is introduced, which they solve almost immediately. I liked the ending. Dont think that I hate it. I just feel that considering the scope of the problem the characters were introduced with, it would have needed at least two seasons to finish, instead of just one.
Kurtis: makes a video about confusing TikToks Danny: makes a video basically about not being able to lie to his followers Drew: makes a well-structured, thought out video essay
I didn't even notice that they all uploaded today I just watched them all like it was a normal day 😂 I swear they're ALL just Danny pranking us in different wigs.
Once you’ve seen a terrible season it’s almost impossible to think about it without the stain of the terrible season. It’s like a great person u knew doing terrible things, the lense u see them through has been changed forever.
Jane the Virgin was my FAVORITE show at one point, i re-watched it all the time until season 5 came out, and it just ruined every character and storyline for me. I haven't re-watched it since.
I disagree they transformed all the characters from small people making a difference in there town to huge politicians which felt forced and the last season made very little sense
@@yogiaguiar1548 That show had 5 seasons of 13 hour long episodes and there's truly only one bad episode. That's not quantity over quality, that's quantities of quality.
@Alex I think they are talking about season 3 episode 10: Fly. Some people think of it as the worst one and is the worst rated one on IMDb, due to it being considered “filler”. However it is actually in my top five episodes in the show and I love it.
I always felt sorry for Topher Grace. People only hate on him for leaving That 70's Show because his movie career never really took off and his bold choice didn't pay off. The show was dead anyway as Drew proves here.
gilmore girls is such a good example of the character downfall, its so hard to watch the first few seasons and see rory as the innocent child instead of the entitled person she becomes
Even as a kid I realized how terrible of a person rory became, it becomes impossible to rewatch as all they seem to do is praise her as an amazing person.
The only episode I will ever purposely go back and watch is maybe the last episode, and that’s because the scene with kitty and Donna. I always liked it
Something that confused me about That 70s Show was that these characters were 17...almost the whole time. Over several seasons it’s mentioned that Eric is still 17 despite having a thanksgiving episode almost every season?
It was an eight season long show that took place in a span of about 4 years. (1976-1980) Of course they didn't know how long the show was going to run so they didn't do 2 seasons per year and everything got so screwed up. The kids being 17-18 for almost the entirety of the show was confusing, especially since it takes place over a span of 3-4 years and had holiday episodes every season.
The Good Place was a show that ended perfectly. They had a 4 season plan and stuck to it, despite its success. Because of that, every episode is a joy, the characters feel fully developed, and the overall conclusion is immensely satisfying. Definitely in my top 3 shows of all time.
The Good Place has probably one of the best endings for a tv show I’ve ever seen. They could’ve just kept going with that show forever if they wanted to because of the way it’s set up. They made the story they wanted to though and finished it in a really satisfying way.
@@gileee yeah I can totally see that. There’s a part of me that wishes we got one more episode with them just hanging out in the actual good place. I also just love the characters and want to see more 😭😭 However I can also see why they chose one long episode. I feel like no matter what, it’s going to feel cut short as we don’t see the centuries they spent living in the good place.
Perfect ending and right amount of seasons: Gravity Falls. It had two seasons as Alex Hirsch didn't want to ruin the show by dragging it out, and it ended on such a lovely note, and left it slightly open ended (not much but a little) so you know the characters will see their friends again, but we don't see it so it isn't ruined. Basically I love Gravity Falls and I loved the ending.
One of the famous examples is Gravity falls, which had a pre-planned ending from the beginning, after three seasons, but ended up combining the last two seasons into one, because people on the internet had guessed the ending, and while the mid-season finale for season 2 is one of the best episodes of television period, it also adds a fourth main castmember who we're supposed to care about as much as the others four episodes later when the show's multi-part finale starts, with his not even being in one of the intervening episodes. Then the crunch to finish the show faster lead to delays that made the season release across 2 years anyway. Though the show itself never got to be _bad,_ this lead to an ending planned from the start by the show's creator which didn't actually satisfy fans, and thus interest in a third season persists to this day in spite of all this.
Arlo Mates gravity falls is my childhood favorite show, and I cried the day it ended. I think that they should have either rewritten the finale or added an extra season when the twins return. It was a really unsatisfactory end to a great show.
Came to the comments to say exactly this. Daniel Levy has said in countless interviews that their mindset from the very beginning was to write a natural story for the characters and end it once those stories reached their conclusion. He's very vocal about his distaste for shows that overstay their welcome
I feel the same about the anime Symphogear. It just ended so well after a phenomenal story spanning 5 seasons of pure awesomeness that the creators wanted to tell and the ending is fulfilling and worth it. Hibiki and her colleagues save the world by hugging the living daylights out of a freaking God that was possessing Miku, everyone is living in peace, and Hibiki and Miku have a little heart to heart as they watch the night sky together. That is such a solid A+ ending for an A+ show right there.
Also, The Good Place. There was no more story there and Mike Schur recognised it and said he had planned it to be this long and it would be just this long.
@@parushashridhar3189 yes, that’s another really good example! Although at times I wished TGP had been a movie instead of a show. Sometimes it felt like there just wasn’t enough material to justify dozens of episodes. But I love the story the show told.
@@sadielatta3022 Agreed. I wouldn't have minded if there was no season 4 altogether but, I guess it never turned outlandish and the bar is in fact, that low.
I think that Schitt’s Creek is a perfect example of a show that ended at the perfect time. The writer and show-runner Dan Levy had a plan for the ending of the series after it was renewed for another 2 seasons, and although it became incredibly popular, the 6th season was the perfect way to end the show.
I think a bad ending of a show really can end up killing the show all together. I mean, Game of Thrones had a terrible ending and a year after nobody talks about the show anymore
I know right. before that god awful ending everyone loved that show and talked about it all the time, now their reputation is left in the dirt and no one cares about it.
I think it's the same with HIMYM. If it ended differently, people might still remember it as one of the best sitcoms of all time, but that ending left a bad taste and HIMYM is not brought up nearly as much as it should be. Although it is my favorite show.
GoT actually happened to be one of the shows that was prematurely ended. They could have taken time to lead the story on instead of hastily ending it and ruining a masterpiece.
@@kimia1664 completely agree. Of course we can still appreciate seasons 1-6 and even 7 but the whole POINT of the show was basically slaughtered in 55 minutes.
THANK YOU I was looking for this comment!!! I used to love Grey's a lot but you best believe I stopped watching the actual hot mess of a show that it's become years ago :(
First show that came to mind. The writers are literally just picking lines out of a hat and throwing them on paper as a script. So disappointed at the decline Grey's Anatomy had.
Freaks and Geeks is one of my favorite shows. It launched a lot of young actors careers, and was really well written, but it was cancelled on the first season. The ending was pretty satisfying, something that had you wondering what the kids would go on to do, but overall knowing it would be alright. The show is about high schoolers in the early 80s, and from what my parents recall, it was pretty much exactly how high school in the 80s felt. It’s a lot more real then how media usually glamorizes the 80s. But what I love about the show is how so much happens in the first and only season. A whopping 18 episodes. You see kids turn into adults, bullies to nerds, and geeks into “freaks”. You hate people at first but learn to like them. You like people and learn to hate them. And overall, the main characters problems aren’t always that big of a deal. They’re just life lessons. But it’s the way it’s written that gives the stories and the kids depth, and makes you love their characters. they feel so real. like friends just having fun and laughing. But also how it feels to have major life changes and growing up. Overall 10/10 show would highly recommend.
I was thinking about Freaks and Geeks throughout the video, it has a satisfying ending and I’m happy it couldn’t be ruined. The characters live on in your imagination:)
Bojack Horseman is one of the best shows of the last five years. They ended it perfectly, had believable, well-written characters with amazing personal story-arcs, had the best representation of mental health issues I've ever seen in a TV show. The comedic, light-hearted style perfectly pairs with the darker themes. It did everything 'thirteen reasons why' couldnt do.
The animators are all still working for Netflix and are still unionized. The one show they were working on, Tuca and Bertie, was cancelled prematurely but they have said that 6 seasons was always the plan. Almost all of Netflix's animation studios are unionized. Look into it a bit more. The theory it was cancelled because of the unionization has been debunked. The ending was bittersweet but real. Just like the rest of BoJack.
the worst tv show ending that has stuck with me: How i met your mother. It feels like they had all of these seasons to do whatever they wanted and then they got toward the end, realized they had stretched it out too long, and had to wrap it up with an awful awful ending that made no sense.
The problem was that they wrote themselves into a corner. We had the on/off thing with Robin, while knowing Ted didn't marry her and have kids with her, and ultimately once we knew who the mother was all intrigue would end. It had bad pacing and got very confused. Should have been better planned.
YES oh my god! i could have accepted that the mother died if not for them hurriedly forcing the Robin-Ted plot at the end. like what was that? seems like the writers just crammed it in at the last minute to try & please people.
I honestly think Danny Masterson had a lot to do with why Topher left the show. Since his trial a lot has come out about how toxic that set was and it’s pretty well documented that all the kids on that show, except Topher, hung out together outside of the show. It’s also we’ll document that all the boys, except for Topher we’re big partiers who all have questionable relationship histories and more than likely knew what was going on with Danny the whole time. It’s also been noted that Danny disliked Topher because he didn’t bow to his influence like the others did. Danny’s ex-girlfriend has also said that Danny bullied Topher on the set and that he would be abusive towards her for even saying hi or trying to be cordial to Topher. If all this is true, which I honestly think it is, then I don’t blame Topher for not wanting to be a part of that environment and getting out as soon as his contract allowed him.
I agree completely. All the actors on that 70's show have been exposed as pretty shitty ppl, except Topher (and Red & kitty if u overlook them writing letters on Danny's behalf)
Bojack Horseman is a great example of a show that was canceled and handled it beautifully. It seems to wrap up at a good pace, it doesn't rush anything, and everything isn't perfect for the sake of a happy ending. the ending is very fair and heartfelt.
I actually felt like s5 was rushed, partially because netflix cancelled it prematurely before they could have a sixth season, which is when it would have originally ended. so you have some plotlines that feel rushed, like Todd's ending, Bojack and Hollyhock's relationship, etc. I still think it was a good ending but it was rushed, and there wasn't anything that could really be done about it.
@@let_there_be_dark I think the Hollyhock storyline was very realistic. Sometimes people leave your life, and there isn’t a cathartic, satisfying ending. It was resonant.
Totally agree! I think the Coronavirus in San Francisco video I made is a great example of ending something when it needs to be ended. Wonder what they’ll do with “You” on Netflix
It's a game of thrones situation I think, it'll be fine as long as there are books to lead the way, but it's gonna go completely wrong when they try to do their own thing.
The Good Place was so smart in the way it ended. It knew that after season 4 the story wouldn't work. So, they just ended it on their own. Even with popularity, money, and praise, they knew that the show works with 4 seasons and that's it. It ended perfectly.
One example for a show that knew exactly where to go is one of the most underrated shows of all time: Mr Robot. They knew exactly where they were going, they had 4 seasons and 45 episodes to do it in and it ended perfectly where every clue they threw in throughout the series tied together perfectly. My favorite ending to a series ever
The ending of That 70s Show pisses me off TO THIS DAY. Jackie and Hyde not ending up together is one thing (albeit a very stupid thing) but throwing Jackie at Fez last minute was just insulting. What were these writers on?? And don't even get me started on Discount Seth Meyers. "Randy", you guys, seriously?? The guy never stood a chance... Season 8 just doesn't exist for me.
I definetly think just giving fez the girl is wrong, like it would have been much much better to see him overcome his crush and get into a nice healthy relationship. Also I wouldve liked to see more of that gay guy that kissed eric
agreed i mean i can sort of get over Hyde and Jackie not being together but Fez and Jackie made zero sense like at no point was it shown they had feelings for each other. it was all just abit random. the show basically threw out two well established relationships out the window by the end
There was this episode in season 7 where the guys smoked all the stash at Eric's house and in trippy pot haze became paranoid over a van parked outside being CIA surveillance that watches them. I bet the guys wrote season 8 in that episode too.
Ellen pompeo wants this show to end after 18 but she now she has flat out said that the makers and people of this show like the money. So maybe it will get backlash and hopefully end
Days of our lives. This series has been around since the 60's. 57 seasons with 14,000 episodes. Can anyone even tell me the synopsis of an episode they've watched?
@@ppdestroyerdestroyer9682 The show was pretty entertaining at the beginning. It wasn’t award winning but it still satisfied us. It just got worse and worse lol
I always thought Psych was a great example of knowing when and how to quit, even though it went on for eight seasons. They found a formula that worked for each episode, kept the same "feel" throughout all eight seasons, and didn't stray from what they knew the viewers liked about the show. The Office did *not* do this. Even though Psych started to feel a little tired around season seven, it still gave us some great episodes and a great finale. I still go back and re-watch all eight seasons from time to time.
I was zoned out at 9:49 and assumed he was recapping the actual office then zoned back in to " jim realises he's been bisexual this whole time and ends up with kevin".

Did anyone else really feel when he said, it’s not like a movie where you get invested in all of the characters lives for a few days and then life goes on?
Flight of the Concords only got two seasons and HBO wanted to do another season but the band turned it down because they felt they were running out of ideas and honestly, it's the perfect show
When it comes to comedies, a lot of my favorite British comedies don't tend to go longer than three or four seasons. For the most part, I found they tended to end on a high note.
Breaking Bad ended perfectly. They could have easily stretched it out with how successful it was, but they wrapped it in a bow and only let a movie follow it instead of 10+ more seasons.
I agree. To me it's the best series ever produced, there's just so many things that were done perfectly. I regret still not having seen El Camino but I've heard it's brilliant.
My example of this is the Cursed Child for Harry Potter. All the characters were turned into the worst version of themselves, they hint at Harry and Hermione having an affair, Harry is a horrible father, Ron is turned into a stupid idiot, not like a funny idiot like movie Ron, just someone who is completely dumb and they cut a lot of characters like Fred and Teddy Lupin, and it creates a lot of plot holes in the series. Like it ruins the way how time turners worked in the original series. I honestly like to pretend it doesn’t exist.
@@mayasuri5184 Yeah, but the plot doesn’t make sense because time turners don’t work that way. You can only go back a couple hours, and they went decades back. Also time turners don’t pull you back to the future, you have to wait out the time. So if you went back an hour, you have to wait until past you uses the time turner and then you can go back out. Plus all time turners were destroyed in book 5 . I agree with you that it is not a bad plot, it’s just not Harry Potter you know?

this is a mistake they did a such a shameful job being sensitive about mental health and suicide for a show that claimed to care about those issues and the people watching.
@@oliveraddison6143 so basically you said what I said with more detail while adding nothing new to what I was saying. I like season 1 and I think the rest of the show is garbage. I'm aware they didn't do the best job at it but still I liked season 1.
I think Ted Lasso is a perfect example of a show that ended when it needed. The writers also admitted that's how long they planned on doing it since the moment they started filming.
I heard once that it was actually planned for SpongeBob to end after the first movie, but around the time it came out, Stephen hillenburg left and Nick just started milking sea cows.
I feel like a lot of kid shows now just dont put effort anymore cause they can get away with it. Most kid show humor now is: "butts are funny!" "I make funny face you laugh!" "Loud is funny!" When i look at shows like current spongebob and teen titans go, and compare them old spongebob and tom and jerry theres just so little effort. I mean the creators of tom and jerry successfully made an entire series which centered around mute protagonists which led to creative jokes. Its a shame to see what kids gotta grow up with now
I’d honestly say after 2009 or 2010 it should’ve ended cause there were so really iconic episodes after the first movie as well. Once Spongebob reached it’s 10 year anniversary episode, that would’ve been a great place to end.
The show “Awkward.” on MTV had the perfect ending in season 3, where the main girl basically realized she didn’t need a relationship to survive (something she felt she needed from season 1-2). Then, they dragged out the show 2 more seasons, after the show runner left (meaning it was not her vision whatsoever and she left out of spite).

How many did it go for?

it would’ve become a soap opera at that point so thank vince gilligan
Ngl this Drew character has been on this channel for way too long. The writers need to wrap up his storyline and finish this guy up.

Drew is much more suited as the deuteragonist in the story. His sarcastic quips and cynical outlook can help in contrasting with Danny’s happy and pure outlook on the world. Really something magical could be produced from that folks.

I think that Bojack Horseman is an interesting case when talking about endings. Netflix warned the creator that they might decline new seasons without giving him any sort of warning or anything to be able to wrap up the show; so the show is written in a way that any season finale could be the series finale
But in the end they actually told him that the 6th season was gonna be the last, so that's why it feels like an actual conclussion to the show
@@GPoh_99 I wouldn't want to imagine Bojack horseman lasting that long, near the end it just felt like the show was getting less enjoyable

I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS COMMENT I WAS SO HAPPY THEY DIDN’T DRAG OUT THE STORY
What I heard was that it was a Last Airbender situation where they planned an entire arc beforehand.
I think the last 2 season were not really all that funny
The end of The Good Place was so satisfying and finite I honestly don’t know how people could think there could even be more
I thoroughly enjoyed their wrap up of the show in the last few episodes.
Yes although I think one more season out of them wouldn't have hurt. But they had a structure to stick to and I like when shows do that, too.
It should have been one more season it was way to bloated at the end

It’s not surprising that most of the best dramas on television are less than 100 episodes long. (Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men, etc.)

The audacity of that 70s show continuing on after toper left is absurd. There is no show without Eric. He's the quintessential character. He's the glue that holds that friend group together. It was ridiculous in season 8 to still have them hanging out at Eric's house after he was gone.
I have a theory that they kept going and totally ruined Eric’s character was probably because of Danny Masterson.
That 70s Show is my favorite sitcom. I’ve watched through it entirely at least 20 times, I just constantly restart it when I’m done. (I’ve also enjoyed Netflix’s That 90s Show.)
I don’t hate the final season.
Game of Thrones is the inverse. It's a show that needed more seasons, at least to get to the intended ending.

alt shite fr I think that was one of the best show endings of all time
Totally agree with you, it’s my favorite tv show ending of all time. It perfectly complies a sad goodbye with a hopeful future and leaves the audience feeling satisfied.
YES!!! that’s one of the few shows that retained its signature quality and charm to the very end, while still allowing for its characters to develop into a graceful arch that showed positive growth by the finale. I really hate how parks was overshadowed by the office in its initial television run, because it really was mike schur’s best work as an overall show.
it was an alright ending but it felt a bit rushed because, well, it was lol
I feel the same way about Psych. Have you watched?
I think the best example of a show ending at the right time is Derry Girls. Yes I would have loved to get more, but (and I said this to my friend when we watched the last episode because she was annoyed it was over) I would rather get a satisfying ending that wraps up the characters' stories than have a show get stretched out until the characters are barely recognizeable.
That's why I love The Good Place so much. It just ended today and even though EVERYBODY would love to see more of the show, they decided that this was the exact story they wanted to tell, no ifs or buts
must agree greatly, cried and laughed so much. just the perfect amount of everything!
This video really brought up a lot of points that apply to good shows like The Good Place. Like keeping original characters, having great story lines, and not rushing the ending but not dragging it out too much either.
My girlfriend watches it and enjoys it. I tried to give it a try here and there and... Gosh is it bad...

The best example of a show knowing when to go is "The Good Place". Not only did they know exactly the right time to leave, but the finale literally uses this as it's main theme.
That's really a great example
I respectfully disagree with that. The show knew where to go, but did not take its time to build up to the finale. No sooner are the characters in the good place than a new huge problem is introduced, which they solve almost immediately.
I liked the ending. Dont think that I hate it. I just feel that considering the scope of the problem the characters were introduced with, it would have needed at least two seasons to finish, instead of just one.

LMAOOO yes, i HATED that season
Something that confused me about That 70s Show was that these characters were 17...almost the whole time. Over several seasons it’s mentioned that Eric is still 17 despite having a thanksgiving episode almost every season?
It was an eight season long show that took place in a span of about 4 years. (1976-1980)
Of course they didn't know how long the show was going to run so they didn't do 2 seasons per year and everything got so screwed up.
The kids being 17-18 for almost the entirety of the show was confusing, especially since it takes place over a span of 3-4 years and had holiday episodes every season.
Because they’re all dead and in limbo
That’s So Fetch! The only acceptable answer
Let's make a baby, hunny bunny
Emilie Wallace they do get kinda older but I think the show wants you to forget that so they just don’t mention them getting older
The Good Place was a show that ended perfectly. They had a 4 season plan and stuck to it, despite its success. Because of that, every episode is a joy, the characters feel fully developed, and the overall conclusion is immensely satisfying. Definitely in my top 3 shows of all time.
It's part of the final season's message. Having an end to something is what makes it special
I absolutely hated the ending, why “take it sleezy???”
I think that show completely went off the rails and made absolutely no sense by the end of it
i'm really sad it ended but i'm also really glad they didn't stretch it out because the ending was just so perfectly timed
The end was great last night
The Good Place has probably one of the best endings for a tv show I’ve ever seen. They could’ve just kept going with that show forever if they wanted to because of the way it’s set up. They made the story they wanted to though and finished it in a really satisfying way.
The good place is an example of *the* perfect show in my opinion
Except the ending was extremely abrupt to me. Like "ok everyone I'm gonna go stop existing now. Bye bye." Loved the show tho.
@@gileee yeah I can totally see that. There’s a part of me that wishes we got one more episode with them just hanging out in the actual good place. I also just love the characters and want to see more 😭😭

True, I would add Avatar The Last Airbender as well

BOJACK
Gravity falls was amazing
i agree!

Schitt’s Creek ended itself because “that was the end of the story they wanted to tell” and I just loved that
Came to the comments to say exactly this.
If it wasn't for that godawful ending people would be re-watching GoT for years and years, it would become a cult classic.
GoT actually happened to be one of the shows that was prematurely ended. They could have taken time to lead the story on instead of hastily ending it and ruining a masterpiece.

Idk I think greys is still going strong because characters are being filtered out fairly often which can be cool

Literally after The plane crash everything started to go downhill and when Derek died the show should have been done.

Holly-Marie Matthew I love the show but it sucks that it was cancelled early and the writers had to cram everything into one season.
It was perfect, but it felt rushed at the end. I felt empty at the end. Was that intentional?
Maya Christensen can’t believe they spent the whole ass season on the wedding and they didn’t even stay together lol like wtf still annoys me now
The problem was that they wrote themselves into a corner. We had the on/off thing with Robin, while knowing Ted didn't marry her and have kids with her, and ultimately once we knew who the mother was all intrigue would end. It had bad pacing and got very confused. Should have been better planned.
i love how i met your mother but i refuse to watch the ending it makes no sense
The ending to HIMYM is a huge fuck you to fans all because a test audience didn't like the "happy" ending
He and Red were also the only actors not involved in Scientology and therefore were the ones that didn’t defend Danny.
@@KanyeOeste911 dude even Red wrote a letter for Danny. Laura and Wilmer didn’t.

The plot wasn’t actually that bad, it was the characters that made it horrible.
@@mayasuri5184 Yeah, but the plot doesn’t make sense because time turners don’t work that way. You can only go back a couple hours, and they went decades back. @@dillontyler3002 1st season was great but I dont like that it romanticized suicide
this is a mistake they did a such a shameful job being sensitive about mental health and suicide for a show that claimed to care about those issues and the people watching.
“These characters become your life.”
Alright Drew, I didn’t come here to be attacked like this-
Ghost_Prince 😂😂
Too Short: Kurtis Connor
Just Right: Danny Gonzalez
Also Just Right: Drew Gooden
They are the same show
Danny and Drew the same person so gonna both be just right 🤔
If we're being honest spongebob should've ended back in 2005 when the first movie came out. the movie was the PERFECT conclusion for the show.
SuperBranman011 bro the new episodes really suck they’re nothing like the classic old ones :(
Agreed. They changed writers after the movie and it just went downhill after that
I heard once that it was actually planned for SpongeBob to end after the first movie, but around the time it came out, Stephen hillenburg left and Nick just started milking sea cows.
Then, they dragged out the show 2 more seasons, after the show runner left (meaning it was not her vision whatsoever and she left out of spite).
omg i remember watching this show religiously, i’ve never seen any show/movie commentary youtuber ever talk about it
