"They plan to add more." Thats the problem with games now a days. Updates shouldn't be something I have to wait for to make the game feel complete.

It's crazy how a game like No Man's Sky has an insane amount of updates. But people don't even know sometimes cuz they lost interest ever since it first launched. The game was basically unfinished lol

I'd love for Jake and falcon to do a "how does it hold up?" Series. I know they've done lists like this or occasionally do a "1 or 2 years later" but I mean 10-20 minutes video dedicated to one game, something 20 years+ old. Give some attention to old games people don't talk about anymore.

Maybe it's just me but the reason I stopped watching Gameranx is because he's the most fence-sitter review I've ever seen. His opinions are always the most inoffensive, middle-ground opinions.
I respect it as that means he's got content for everyone. But that's also why I can't watch him.
I also appreciate that this wasn't just a gripe fest for 15 minutes to capitalize on the hype. I had no interest in this game but given the negative reviews was curious to see what it was about. I appreciate that the good or somewhat interesting design choices were highlighted and discussed along with the bad.

They should have made a Batman vs. the Justice League with Batman using his contingency plans to stop and save his friends. It would have been awesome and a much better send-off to Kevin's Batman. RIP.

You know when I played Ghost of Tsushima I thought to myself, "this cinematic presentation with minimal UI is the future". I see RS went the exact opposite direction.😮
Interesting that ghosts of tsunami is a game set in Japan done by a American study iirc.
There's this interesting video essay + reply essey why Asian/Japanese websites tend to contain a lot of information presented densly vs American ones tend to be more minimal/less cluttered. The TH-camr in the reply video showed studies around brain function, Asian tend to process information in a way that they can handle all that information better. (Original video was answers in progress, I forget who made the reply video).
So, I wonder if ghosts of tsunami would have such a minimal layout if it'd been developed in Japan, if this design differences/information handling different can been seen in game uis, and if SS UI team and testers makeup tender more towards those that prefer the 'cluttered' design.
I much prefer the minimal design, but that's how my brain handles it. Being able to configure UI settings is great to allow people to choose what's best for them.
But there’s also games like Elden ring with very minimal hud made by eastern studios. I really don’t think it’s east vs west here, there’s examples and exceptions from both sides. It certainly doesn’t have to do with eastern people processing info better/faster, or you could say that it’s actually because western people comprehend and retain info better, so there is no need for additional UI or HUD.

Ghost of tsushima doesnt have a "minimalist ui" It has no ui at all. You have a health bar, sure. You also have a stance bar- but you dont have to look at it all. They made no ui because they wanted you to look at the beautiful world they made and immerrse yourself in it.@@hefoxed
@hefoxed I don't have a hard time processing all the information, I just think it looks ridiculous.
A nice clean look with a cinematic feel just feels far more immersive and enjoyable to me. I've never been able to get into most of the Asian style games like final fantasy, the weird over the top action with swords longer than bodies being wielded by a scrawny kid just always put me out.
I did enjoy final fantasy 15? I think it was. But it still just annoyed me how scrawny noctis was. But by the end when he was older I loved it, especially when the world was thrust into the dark.
Anyways went off point. I think it comes down to preference on what you like on the screen, overly congested ui, damage numbers and crazy flashes every where, just does not appeal to me.
I usually turn all ui elements off cause I want to feel as immersed as possible.

What gets me with the lack of enemy variety is that the premise fundamentally revolves around Brainiac mind-controlling people, so there are so many ways they could've used that to have a few different enemy types/factions: Brainiac'd Intergang, Brainiac'd MPD, maybe even Brainiac'd Atlanteans or Amazons since he seems to be a world-ending threat that likely would've pulled in forces from outside of Metropolis, etc.

@@davonross1022 that could be all well and good, but for people who consider basic game design like "enemy variety" the prospect of paying additional money or even just waiting for a free update is not appealing.
I'm not sure if it's the same enemies, but the combat looks same-y regardless of which character on screen.

I have a feeling this was never supposed to be a live service game and when WB picked up the company They got money hungry. That's probably the reason why rocksteady's founders ended up leaving mid-development
They been picked up the company. Back when they made arkham city. It sucks because since gotham knights was considered an "live service" and it made a profit that why they wanted suicide squad to be live service. If gotham knights never turned a profit then we could've seen a story driven game.
It was always a live service game. There is a lot of evidence of rocksteady pitching this to WB. Realistically, Rocksteady is WBs Michael Jackson, they’re gonna let Michael Jackson be Michael Jackson.
Rocksteady was not forced, whatever single player game they brought, WB would back them. They had a flawless track record.

Palworld is more of less live service. Minecraft is more or less live service. Fortnite is going strong. Apex and The Finals are amazing games. Live service is here to stay IMHO. And good live service games are insanely fun. But there will always be bad ones.
PS Really digging the Finals ATM. Extremely underrated game. The interactivity of the player and the world is unmatched in the history of shooters.

And make them do missions in the multiverse where they fight many variations of villains and heroes.
You can even buy upgrades from other worlds batmen, like maybe you borrow Green Lantern Batmans ring or Bat Wonder Woman's lasso.

That’s like so true tho thinking abt it. Would’ve made team based combat a lot more interesting and varied, like wanting to pick king shark for melee mayhem, Harley or captain boomerang as mixups of the two styles, and deadshot for pure shooter goodness

King Shark could have a weaker/no shield in exchange for having a larger health bar and regeneration. You can pull enemies towards you or you to enemies using the hook, and melee attacks can regain health. Encourage a brawling, get-in-the-thick-of-it style.
Deadshot would be more about precision. You get rapid-fire from the hip, while aiming with iron sights slows your rate of fire in exchange for more critical damage on weak points. You also have a shrinking reticle that the smaller it gets, the more powerful the shot. One skill could be auto-hit no matter how off your aim is, while another is a charged heavy-damage shot.
Captain Boomerang can use an infinite supply of boomerangs to hit multiple targets, or the same target several times, at the cost of reduced individual damage. His boomerang skills could be all about elemental effects with a guaranteed chance to trigger, or a multi-strike that stuns an enemy for the duration of the attack.
And Harley Quinn will be the mixed class. She can do melee damage with her hammer or bat, but not as much as Shark. She can use precision shots, but won’t do as much damage as Deadshot. And she has traps and explosives with elemental effects, but they need to used at a closer range.
And that’s how I’d do them to retain a unique identity.

I don’t understand how people still hype up Rocksteady as if it’s the same company. All the creative leads and team from the Arkham games have left the studio. It’s not the same people
We can't just assume every company that have a few people leave will immediately die. We have to see what comes out of it first. Now we've seem, and we can say that Rocksteady is now likely to be a cash cow for WB instead of a creative studio for the fans. Plus some of those guys didn't leave until late in development.

Rocksteady made the BEST combat in modern video game history, which was adapted by the likes of Sony's Spider-Man, WB's Mordor games, and many others, and they squandered by replacing it with a shooter.

The amount of "We will see it again a year from now" is getting very old very fast. I know this became the expected for games nowadays, but it is still sad.
I mean... That kinda comes with live-service games. Street Fighter 6 a year after release and Tekken 8 a year after release will also be pretty different games due to system adjustments, new characters, new content, etc, etc. Heck, just compare vanilla Tekken 7 on release at the arcades to Tekken 7 at the end of its life cycle right after it shipped its final DLC character. Practically two totally different games.

@@runbaaPl4y Much harder to compare a fighting games live service model though because yeah it's true they add content and make changes throughout the lifecycle of the game, but the patches they make are usually adjust characters and add content to an already amazing game. Tekken is a great example cause Tekken 8 has a crazy amount of content already from the characters and depth of each one, game modes, customization etc. And manages to deliver this as a full experience with no microtransactions or seasonal updates.
A live service game like suicide squad and that horrid avengers game deliver you a half assed project and then throw microtransactions and seasonal updates in your face at the promise of more half assed content over time to keep you paying for and playing the same garbage over and over again.
The fact that suicide squad is this mediocre - giving it the benefit of the doubt - at launch and we have to wait to see if it will eventually be worth anything is disgusting. Especially coming from the creators of the Arkham franchise.
@@R3alHooman a more apt comparison would probably be Hitman 2016. On release, Hitman 2016 was okay overall. Now, as part of the new trilogy package, Hitman World of Assassination is regarded as among the best Hitman content in the franchise. Doesn't change the fact that Hitman 2016 was okay at best back then, but with the hindsight that it's part of a larger trilogy, it does recontextualizes the game. The on-release review 'n done models work horribly for games designed to be continually updated gradually.
I wi give the SS game one thing it has over the Avengers game, tho. It has a better gameplay foundation than Avengers. It's functional, it's fun, and it's fast. What the SS game lacks is good level and enemy design for the purpose of the gameplay loop.

I’m not even surprised that the enemies are boring, it seems like that’s case with most modern games and I’m not sure if they’re boring cause they’re bad or we as players have seen it before and want something new because those exact same enemies were great years ago but they’re some games with enemies that are enjoyable
I hate this ideology because it makes the developers seem unaccountable. Here's some simple logic so hopefully they'll never have the question. Ask yourself do you dislike the gameplay for a specific reason? Is that reason because it feels like something you've played before(aka not very innovative). If yes then it's because of your experience, if no it's because something more specific than that.

I cant believe Rocksteady's talent was wasted on this. These guys had made really good games previously.
From what I read, the team (or most of the original team) that worked on the Arkham games didn’t work on this title, as they left to form their own studio.
But I’m not 100%.
Its not the same Rocksteady, the people behind the arkham trilogy have recently created a new studio, Hundred star games
This game could have been good
Basically same thing that happened to a lot of studios lately within the last 10 or so years. It's all name now and is being dragged thru the mud.
I mean the original team that worked on the Arkham series have either moved on to other studios or formed their own studio. It's not the same anymore. It's pretty unfortunate to see Rocksteady's legacy at this stage.
If Rocksteady makes a Batman Beyond game, I can see several of these traversal mechanics lending themselves to that world. Game mechanics that meet somewhere between Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad, in the form of a next-gen game set in that neo-noir/cyberpunk city has a lot of potential. It would also be neat to play as one character rather than four, with access to the best of the Suicide Squad’s collective moveset. Even if they didn’t innovate any of these mechanics or graphics and instead focused solely on world design and especially the writing, I’d be very excited to see it happen.

I'm 40 this year and have audial / visual overload issues and I find this to be one of the most visually painful videos I've seen in a long time. Not because of Gameranx, but because the game itself is just absolute visual noise. Even if you can turn some stuff off I wouldn't touch this for that reason alone.

This is not the same Rocksteady that made Arkham
I don't know how people are just now realizing this game had nothing to do with the Arkham series.
-One is a single player, linear* experience.
-The other a multiplayer focused, open game.
- One is gothic, relatively mature game.
- The other colorful semi-cartoony mess full of teen "humor".
- One is a complex game with a fun melee combat system, stealth sections, exploration, puzzle solving ...
- The other is a third person shooter that looks like Destiny and Fortnite had an abortion.
When did anyone got the idea this would anything other than...this?

This game never looked good, games as service is never good and the whole concept is the direct opposite to what Rocksteady was known for. Basically, there was never any reason for Arkham games fans to be interested by this.

The first two, Origins was fantastic too but was a secondary studio. Arkham Knight sucked, it felt empty and boring and lacking in variety or cohesion, after that I didn't have high hopes for this even if I did want it to do well and wanted them to learn from their mistakes with Arkham Knight.
Its sad thats how games are now days that they lack meat or I guess depth.

That's just my opinion. It's not even like I'm a "Marvel fanboy" or something. Yes, I PREFER Marvel over DC but even I recognize the BORING Marvel characters that the studio stupidly hypes up for PC reasons. When you think of Marvel you think of the top dogs like Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man. When you think of DC you think of Batman, Superman, and... That's about it lol (not counting villains). Even characters like Wonder Woman can't compete with Batman.
Again.. just my opinion. I'm not Marvel fanboy hating on DC. I just generally think DC can't compete with Marvel and they have only a few characters I care about.

Bad guys dress as clowns, riddles, calendars, mirrors, pro wrestlers and carry ventriloquist dummies. They dress up as pharaohs, white rabbits and ride silly rocket ships. Taking everything great about comics and just replacing it all with guns in a bad Destiny clone is just silly from a gameplay perspective.
The number one reason Captain Boomerang is interesting is specifically because he doesn't use guns, so to make his boomerang a traversal mechanic is lame as hell.
The minute they made characters who never use guns become 100% reliant on guns is the exact time they needed to go back to the drawing board.

So again, you I'm pretty sure u understand the point of my own comment yet it keeps going over your head, and that's smashing a square peg into a round hole doesn't work. This isn't that complicated.
I have so many problems with this game right off the bat, and I'm not talking about the gameplay, but rather questions that the producers should have raised the moment the game was pitched:
1. Why are Gotham villains in Metropolis?
2. Isn't the whole point of Green Lantern's ring that it requires willpower to work, right? So how is Stewart still having it after being possessed?
3. Why are there Riddler trophies? Wasn't the whole point of them that Riddler wants to prove his intellectual superiority over Batman? Whom is he showing it over here, King Shark?
4. What on earth was Batman doing with the Justice League? His identity already got revealed and he did the Knightfall protocol in the end of Arkham Knight. Why is he still running around in his costume?
5. Didn't Deadshot retire after the Knightfall protocol? More importantly, how did he change his race?
6. If Batman was in contact with the Justice League the whole time, why didn't he take their help in the Arkham games? Like, just call Superman to swoop in and clap Bane every single time.
Only thing I can figure is that it’s Arkhamverse, but a multiverse variant. Which I hope because I do not want this game canon 😭
Every one of these is answered in the game, except maybe #3 being more of a point of carrying something over from the Arkham games. There is a section early on when you explore the Hall of Justice as the Squad and it will fill in what happened between Arkham Knight and this game, that section answers most of your questions. The bit about Deadshot is a running joke through the game, but it fits the story fine, keep in mind with comic book characters there are usually several people who take over the same mantle, for instance Green Lantern wasn't race swapped, it's just not Hal Jordan as is the typical standard. I don't think there is a direct answer for #2 in game, but there is nothing to suggest being brainwashed by Brainiac would nullify a power ring in the first place, they still have willpower, it's just bent toward Brainiac's cause; in fact, I would argue it makes his willpower stronger if anything since he is intent on nothing else except the objectives given to him by Brainiac.
Games like this and avengers should make you appreciate guardians of the galaxy game which was awesome.

We’re feeling Microtransaction/live service fatigue. It’s too much and everywhere. This is why,I think, games like BG3, Enshrouded, hell even PalWorld are huge hits at fair prices. All while D-IV is asking $40 for a portal color and Suicide Squad is asking $70 for a half baked game, it’s tiring. That being said, you know damn well we’re all paying $100 for GTA VI 🤪

no one cares about it until its jarging af. if it was a simple UI with no real qualities then you would barely notice it but when its bad and ugly you cant look away from it.
So here is my input. First I agree with a lot of his points. The bones for a good looter shooter is there. They will need to adjust there enemy type. There does need to be additional variation of enemies. The missions do need a little tuning. I hate to compare but similar to destiny strikes and division. There fun its just need tighter focus. The price at 70.00 maybe the high end for expectations. That 50.00 maybe the sweet spot. All the dps numbers and modifiers are pure dopamine. If they can continue to learn and implement some of these changes they may be on to something. There are so many characters they can add and storylines they can build and play with. I recommend to buy it once hit goes on sale.
When I first saw this game I got excited. But that excitement was short lived the second I saw rocket packs, guns and glowing monsters.
Even if it was free, I still couldn't see myself playing it more than a couple hours.
I wouldn't play it at all. It just makes me want to play Guardians of the Galaxy (which is an awesome game btw).

@@harrysimpson8008 Agreed although I'd argue games as service is up there on the hated by gamers list. I still play Rocket League every season, usually every week. They don't force the microtransactions down my throat, and the gameplay has been solid since 2015 or whenever it launched.
The problem I think is executives see games as service as this hands over fist money-making entity with crazy long longevity, but they fail to realize that only a handful of games as service IPs are going to make it say 2 years. Gamers can't dedicate their full attention to every GaS that comes out, so these games end up cannibalizing each other.
I do wish I knew about Sefton Hill and some of the other creatives at Rocksteady leaving earlier in the development process because that's the writing on the wall basically.

Interesting review. From what I can gather there's the guts of a fun and interesting story here with a business model where gameplay design should be. Very unfortunate, especially considering Rocksteady haven't put anything out in eight years.

@@Diree I agree with you, but UI and UX are different things. User Interface vs User Experience. The latter encompasses the entire game experience, the former what you all were talking about (information and interface elements).
That's actually why I found the Elden Ring controversy with UX very puzzling. Everyone was talking about the game's UI when the original comments from the developers were talking about UX. They were basically making a joke that all they were taught about user experience (make it pleasant) was turned on its head. Soulsborne games are hard as fuck and intentionally unpleasant user experiences that, despite what convention might say, people love (including myself).
@@MyUsualComment I know they're different things, but they're closely related. UI is part of UX, because whatever this is it's certainly not a good system to convey information easily. Usually these two sectors (have to) work hand in hand. The interface is just the optical representation in the end. How you're conveying that information via the interface is part of the user experience. Although I do find that term heavily overused.
Anyway, semantics ... I totally agree with you on ER, the UI is minimal and the information is often not conveyed in a clear manner. Not even mentioning the "odd" quest design or general gameplay flow, but that's another matter entirely.
I generally find it harder to talk about user experience design in games, because as in the example of ER, the obscurity is part of the "charm" and intentionally designed NOT to be very user friendly, unlike say in a document or graphics program where you want maximum accessibility.
It even has the same color palette as Redfall. These are now the colors of sadness.
Not saying the game looks good but your on drugs if you think it looks anything like Redfall.

Not even close at all in any way to the dark and beautifully moody colour palette of Redfall. The atmosphere was the best thing about that game, I ended up dropping it but I had a lot of fun with the first half and never encountered any bugs or performance issues either, it was just an average game with not enough interesting content, not at all the disaster people claimed. This game is bright and colourful, you seriously need to get your eyes checked because they clearly do not function correctly

From the moment I saw it was a live service shooter I knew this was a "watch the cutscenes on TH-cam" situation. I feel like from a story perspective it was still good and Rocksteady still gets DC. The gameplay feels like it was made by another studio.
AS DEC 5 2024, this game is $4.99 for deluxe pack. The deluxe pack normal price is $99.99. I just bought it and its definitely worth it for that price, I’m 2 hours in 👍

Majority of companies disband employees when games don't get much sales.
In this case of what they did show and majority of hate, Rocksteady's fate goes same like it did to Crystal Dynamics with Avengers.
This game will be delisted as well because it takes so much money to keep it going on digital stores.
What a lot of these games tend to lack is a decent base game “endgames” Avengers had the same issue, the endgame was literally just redoing harder versions of the story, if you want players to stick around for content updates, they need to be at best engaged, or at worst, have a really good carrot dangled in front of them.
If this had an engaging endgame, I’d say it would be decent if not average, cause I will admit, I enjoyed playing through the story, but I just know for a fact that once I am done with said story, I will drop it and only pick it up for new content.
Why is Debra Wilson's exact likeness in every game? Amanda Waller is usually portrayed as a heavy-set lady, somebody you don't want mess with even if you have super powers. If they put Wilson's face on Waller's body type, that would be fine. But instead it's just Debra Wilson, in video game form, again
Likely something in her contract that requires she be portrayed in game because she did mocap for her character in Fallen Order. I do agree it's very weird to make Waller skinny and well-built. Though this was DEFINITELY some contract clause or smth.
Waller is about attitude not size. Viola Davis isn't heavy set, and she was fantastic as Waller in the films/Peacemaker.
The Arkhamverse has always winged it with their designs on well established characters. Amanda Waller being different isn't really that crazy regardless of whatever contractual obligation may or may not be around Debra Wilson.

Let alone that Waller in some comics did work the field as an agent, she isn't always heavy set and it's stupid to assume Ana ctor has such a strange clause in the first place. Because there's literally no benefit in it. And we're assuming the people behind this game were really concerned about everything being comic accurate
New 52 Waller, the Waller from the arrow series and the 2018 suicide squad:hell to pay weren’t heavy set women.
Would have been cool if this was a legion of doom game where you could multiplay it up to take on heroes in a monster hunter type of game. Green arrow would be a jagras and superman would be final boss. Could grind for generic parts or equipment from the heroes to upgrade yourself. Using a kryptonite knife to skin superman to make armor? Yes please
So it looks and sounds like a DC version of Marvels Avengers
