Not every stylist had the wonderful benefit of being properly trained on cutting techniques AND communicating to execute exactly what the client wants..... that is a skill and a gift.... I love this haircut too.... hopefully you find someone to cut it perfectly for you
@slididn :p really? I wanted to do it today but I don’t have any hair si scissors and I was tempted to do it with regular scissors but I wasn’t sure. Do you recommend it? 🥺
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’m in cosmetology school but we’re closed due to COVID and you have been helping me maintain my education! I did this haircut on a friend today and it turned out amazing! You’re so thorough and a wonderful instructor!
It took me forever to find someone that could properly do it, even around 2006! lmao once I found her, I've stayed with that same person since then, even though I now live an hour and 45 minutes away🤣 she's also VERY cheap! It's like 15-20$
i just recently found a hair stylist in my city that razor cuts and man its so fucking sick ive always wanted that emo hair look where its wispy on the ends but never knew how you were supposed to get it, surprised how nobody ever talks about razor cuts
I've been cutting my own hair for 20 years. I've had everything, from a mohican to long and wavy, but this haircut was the best, quickest, most satisfying, thanks to this great tutorial. Sectioning is magic. Thank you so much.
I've debated on cutting my hair into a shag for a literal year now, but I finally did it. Best decision I've made in a while. Highly HIGHLY recommend, especially for wavy-hair gals, because the waves are poppin' my dudes.
Thats the thing here ! My shag was so bad that I went to shave my hair and started wearing wigs! It’s at a short length now but could do the shag. I have thick wavy hair and did wear a shag back in the 70’s but nowadays you can’t find a stylist that knows anything about a shag and even the older stylists don’t know!
Yes I hope this is coming back,I have long hair,my hairdresser cut my hair into a shag a few years ago and I had so many compliments some younger girls wanted this cut too
love it! Ive been a hairdresser for 45 years. This is a much more beautiful shag than the 70's version, Just the right amount of weight & waves, prettier and softer. thank you for the inspiration
I'm in some local "what's going on in (insert your city state)" facebook groups. Periodically someone will post a photo of a style she wants and ask who can do it. If you have such a fb group in your area you could ask who can razor cut a shag and paste in the video link. I liked this cut a lot until he fluffed it up too much. I grew up in the '60s and '70s and my mom kept me in pixis. I always wanted a shag.
Sure, go and show your stylist and then see if she even gives a thought to sectioning it. The most sectioning I experienced in the past 10 years, it was in two...in the middle.
Beautiful. I learned this cut in the 70’s. No one these days know what a Shag is. Great for an active life. I have wavy hair and it fits me perfect. Thanks for EDUCATING NEW HAIR CUTTERS, DEE ALSO... RAZOR CUT
Matt. You are the only one so far I have come across who speaks to same hair terminology as I have taught from my instructor from my college. I always spend a lot of time sectioning first and then cut, but a lot of barbers, stylists and clients complained about me for doing so. They always acted impatient about the sectioning part and insisted and instructed me to cut without sectioning.
I've had a stylist tell me that layers like that weren't possible. Now I just gotta find someone who can do this for me. :) Thank you so much for going into such detail about the sectioning!! that was super informative!
I agree Scarlettohara!!!! I have a lovely awesome stylist who can get my red hair dye close to my natural auburn...so hard to find someone who can do that!! Took years. BUT stylist cannot create layers like what Matt does to get the shape...even with pics or videos. Pretty frustrating. He's so awesome!!! Makes me want to try and do it myself
Yeowwww! Matt is so awesome! If I could afford it I'd fly up to hos salon for a cut! My lovely stylist can dye my hair really close to my natural auburn color (which is a miracle...took years to find someone) I agree Scarlettohara OMG!! In the 70s and 80s I had a great shag like this. I think stylists think it looks old or mullets like. Might try to do this cut on my own...seriously!!! Matt is so calm and at ease and his voice is calming too..go Matt!!!
Hi Matt, I'm not a stylist but like watching hair cutting and styling videos. I'm glad you're back really enjoy watching your videos🙂 thanks for sharing ♡
My Favorite cut by far! You're a Wonderful hair stylist. You explain everything so well too. I love the way this cut shows the difference textures and dimensions. Great Job, and such a Beautiful Cut w/ a Razor! ❤️👍👍
This is a great cut for thick hair I'm getting my hair done on Friday and this is just perfect for thick curly hair because it really shatters out all that brutal thickness especially around that neck area thank you so much for sharing great tutorials⚘
Matt thanks for the great tutorials. I am a 2nd year hairdressing student in nz and your videos help reinforce what we are taught and give great direction for how to develop the cutting technique
Hi, I could cut my sister's hair, wavy with high density with your video. Non stylist here so had to finesse with some simple tips from another for leveling (the pony tails) after I cut it. My sister loves her new look. A respite, relief and welcome change from local stylists who insist on her straightening her hair to be able to style it. Thank you Matt Beck.
Oh I love that so so much and that's the haircut I've been looking for but now to find a hairdresser around here that can actually do that and make It look as good as what you did.❤
Do these dummy heads have automatically wavy/curly hair or what? I love the cut but I'm afraid my hair might not wave up that much. Thanks for this though, it's gorgeous!
i cut my hair like this once !! my hair was really short so it gave me a pixie but it grew out really well. now that it's grown out, i'm going to try to do some maintenance with it using this video again :)
That cut was fantastic! There's another shag that I definitely want for sure. I'm looking for it now. The sizes are very different. I'm trying to find it now! Sorry, searching for this picture right now. I'll be back!
this is the only hairstyle I prefer, I’ve done this when I was 10 years old and I loved it ever since but the parlour shop that I got it done before is gone, I went to several parlours but didn’t get the same results. :(
A retired hairdresser here and I have exactly the type of hair you are describing, thick and course. Some natural body in it and I know it would do this if I could only find a stylist that knew how to do this. Most do not know how to use a razor. Wishing you could drop by and do mine for me. Love it.
I can't find the swivel razor on your link just a triangle. This is the most flattering cool healthy cut for my thick wavy hair my girlfriend cut for ud in late 60s 70s part of 80s. Couldn't find anyone who could cut after that. Me too going to cut my own! Wish me luck. WISH you were here. THANK YOU FOR THIS.
I had a shag at age 14 in early ‘70s; this is a great modern version of it! I LOVE IT!!!! 😍 😘. I wonder how to find someone to do this curly shag in my city.... I don’t know if my current stylist could or would do it. 🤔
My Mother's hair are shag in a bad way because she mat with an accident and a head engury and I have tried alot to resolve them. But they are not being resolved. therefore I am Looking for an easy way to resolve my mother's hair.
You're right the term is derogatory. Could you please offer an alternative term to educate those who are unaware and may like to become enlightened? Thank you. ❤
Wow, that is amazing! I'm so glad you chose this as your first video, back, and that YT recommended it on my front page. I wouldn't have wanted to miss this one. That is my idea of the perfect shag. And so easy with that razor. I've got to get thatwhen I'm able to splurge a little, lol. I'd love to try that mousse, too. Thank you! Awesome video! I love all your videos, though, lol. 😊🌹
Shags are hard if you don't pay attention to the density and weight of the hair. You can take to much out in the wrong places if not careful. Beautiful job. Enjoyed.
OMG!! THAT'S IT, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!!!! Why is it so difficult to find stylists these days who know what LAYERS ARE????
Not every stylist had the wonderful benefit of being properly trained on cutting techniques AND communicating to execute exactly what the client wants..... that is a skill and a gift.... I love this haircut too.... hopefully you find someone to cut it perfectly for you
Beautiful

Back in the 70s every teenage girl could do this cut on all her friends. Now, most master stylists cannot. 😂😂😂
you’re aware there’s different types of layers right?
Me intensely staring at my razor thats def not for head hair: 👁👄👁
@slididn :p really? I wanted to do it today but I don’t have any hair si scissors and I was tempted to do it with regular scissors but I wasn’t sure. Do you recommend it? 🥺
@slididn :p i did it right I after I sent my comment lol! And I loved it
Does anyone know where to get the rasor
Haha same …

Congrats on cosmetology school..... I'm proud of you.. keep studying, it definitely makes perfect
We had razor and texture cuts for mostly all our emo scene boy and girl hair back in the early 2000s. Now not one hair stylist can do it. Hahaha.
Yes they were the best, I loved those hair cuts!
It took me forever to find someone that could properly do it, even around 2006! lmao once I found her, I've stayed with that same person since then, even though I now live an hour and 45 minutes away🤣 she's also VERY cheap! It's like 15-20$

Yes this is exactly what I have wanted for a long time. No matter where or who I go to it doesn't happen. This cut looks beautiful!
Thats the thing here ! My shag was so bad that I went to shave my hair and started wearing wigs!

I would love this cut but keeping my hair length long. I had this back in the early 70s.
Yes I hope this is coming back,I have long hair,my hairdresser cut my hair into a shag a few years ago and I had so many compliments some younger girls wanted this cut too
I am a hairdresser here in Brazil and I just did her haircut on my daughter who wanted a lot .... she is very happy, thank you very much ♥ ️❤️ ♥ ️
love it! Ive been a hairdresser for 45 years. This is a much more beautiful shag than the 70's version, Just the right amount of weight & waves, prettier and softer. thank you for the inspiration
So many stylist after the 70’s do not know how to use a razor or cut layers correctly. You have to section the hair first like this video.
I have wanted my hair cut like this my whole life,I couldn't see my hairdresser managing this!I might show her, don't think I want to risk it.

Thank you! Been wanting to do a shag cut in layers but did not know where to start. I cut my own hair and hope I can nail this next time I try.
That was awesome to watch, thank you! My hairdresser cut my hair like this the other day and now it will be the ONLY way I'll have my layers cut. 😊
Rad! This is really gorgeous. I love the texture you got in the fringe, I will defo have to try that razor!
Such a fun freestyle haircut with a razor. I want to try this now
Can you do the top and side only but leave the bottom long?
Good question I had this cut in the 70 s but kept my hair quite long
I love it. I would like to get that hair cut.
You are excellent !
Do these dummy heads have automatically wavy/curly hair or what? I love the cut but I'm afraid my hair might not wave up that much. Thanks for this though, it's gorgeous!

Next time I get mine cut I will be showing them your videos as a reference thank you for cutting hair the way you do!
He’s right about section it first and map out the visual cut right after,,, we’ll all have less complicated way of cutting our clients hair 👍😁
OMG this is perfection!!!! Explained so well...Your really talented... Can you do a video on a Dolly Parton inspired haircut next?
i cut my hair like this once !! my hair was really short so it gave me a pixie but it grew out really well. now that it's grown out, i'm going to try to do some maintenance with it using this video again :)

Okay I can definitely use this on my older client who basically wants a mullet at about ear length on sides and past shoulders in back
So much love with big hug for an excellent shag hair tutorial. ..
Love this so much but once I had a razor cut years ago and it was a frizz bomb! Maybe I have too much curl for a razor? That cut is amazing!!
do u think i could this but with long hair i don’t want my hair that short
Just razer top layers.. keep length

Fantastic! Great length and a lot of fun texture.
Excellent cut and technique!
Love it! I have not seen a shaggy for a while!
I specialize in long shag cut but i created one for really long hair
Cool haircut very awesome love it!
Will this work to give texture/volume to hair that’s finer and more or less bone straight maybe a slight wave? That’s really what I want

I have a question... Will the hair appear more curly with shorter layers?
Beautiful cut Matt! Love the finish.
Love this! I had this back in the 70s!❤❤
ugh does anyone know how to get this texture? my hair is really straight and i want it to have some curls or waves for added definition
Hi there where are you, do you actually have a salon so people can visit and get a hair cut ? I'm in Miami! Thank you!
Is there a head sheet for this by chance ??
would this cut work on hair that doesn't have as much curl/texture?
I think I'll try pinking scissors. Could be interesting 🤔😆
