Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle (except held items)
3. No glitches or exploits*
4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- My Pokemon have perfect genetics to ensure fair comparison between species.
-- *Pokeballs & Pokedolls are allowed in battle
-- *The badge-boost glitch is not restricted at all
-- *Skipping the Rocket Hideout & Marowak is allowed
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- My Pokemon has perfect DVs
-- The Trash-Can-Puzzle is automatically solved so times are not affected by RNG
-- The bike is allowed (the bike skip is not)
-- Skipping the bike is not allowed
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game & timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther
-- Minimize is the other evasion raising move, these Pokemon learn it through level up:
-- Clefairy, Clefable, Grimer, Muk, Chansey, Staryu
Yellow Version changes from Red/Blue:
1. You cannot use Dig/Escape Ropes in Bill's House or the Pokefan Club
2. You cannot talk to the trainers in Blaine's gym to battle them
3. Surge, Sabrina, and Blaine do not have Good AI
4. The Elite Four have better movesets
5. Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni have higher level teams
6. Blaine doesn't use Super Potions are full HP
7. The rival picks his eeveelution based on the outcome of the first two battles.
-- Lose in the lab: Vaporeon
-- Win in the lab and skip route 22: Flareon*
-- Win in both locations: Jolteon
-- *You cannot lose on route 22 because you blackout
Terms:
-- STAB
-- Same-Type-Attack-Bonus - a 1.5x damage multiplier
-- Stat Experience
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of effort values. You can invest in all stats until they max
out at 65535
-- DVs or Determinate Values
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of IVs (individual values), these range from 0-15

My sleep deprived brain: why did he call it "tongue-itty-dee"
My first exposure to Pokemon was a gaming magazine that my grandma bought for me from time to time. One particular edition had a centerfold poster of the original 151 Pokemon, with the news that this game was big in japan and was soon coming to the west. This poster had the Beta English Translated names, like Tonguetyd, so whenever I see a reference to one of those it gives me a strange sense of nostalgic happiness.
46:31 "my next earth cake connects" I get the feeling Lickitung had a spare chocolate cake behind his tail and just threw it as a panic last ditch effort to win. Dude's a real overlooked normal type in gen 1.
He's overlooked cause there are many Normal types that are better
It's not overlooked, it's just straight up not good.
Sure, it has some things going for it, but the things it has other normal types do much better.
@@sopadumacacoumadelicia5What honestly holds back Lickitung is the fact you cannot catch it in the wild in gen 1, it is stuck as is with its nickname "Marc". But if you were playing Japan's Blue version, you could catch one in the Safari... WHERE IT SHOULD'VE BEEN. However in Yellow the other place you could catch it was in Cerulean Cave where at that point you already beat the Elite Four. Otherwise you had to trade a Slowbro or Golduck in the case of Fire Red.
I like seeing the normal mon runs like Lickitung since it’s like a puzzle of figuring out what’s the best moveset to beat the game with the fastest time.

Lickitung being in Cerulean Cave is only true for Yellow. In Red and Blue you get it via In-Game-Trade instead.
I’d humbly like to offer the name “Mandy” for the Channeller as they are the only *Mandy*tory one.
Also billy and Mandy was a spooky show so it fits for a trainer with ghost types
I like this! I was trying to think of a name using "Afflictions" or something like Status Witch, but Mandy is less convoluted!
...though I'd be fine with Mandy the Status Witch ;)

In stadium, this thing has the best attacking animation. It uses its tongue to pole vault which has to be unsanitary but it’s so funny looking. Also keep up the great work!!
Lickitung's movepool is like peak Normal-type. It's so varied. With good enough stats to use it all, too. Great runs.
I recently stumbled on this channel, and it's been so interesting to see the evolution from the earlier videos being just RIFE with PP jokes and girlfriend references to the newer, flashier and more "professional" ones. Both types have entertained me equally. Thanks for all the hard work Scott!

Yeah I'll be totally honest I also forget this Pokemon a lot. I remember Lickilicky more because its name is really funny but I didn't even know where you could find a Lickitung in Yellow.

I really like the final set you came up with, for Lickitung; I feel like you often rely a bit too much on Rest and especially Mimic, but I think, this time, you truly used Rest to its strengths without over-relying on it, and you have the time and consistency to show for it (of course, I'm a layman, when it comes to speedrunning, so I'm only just saying my take from observing your playthroughs).
I’m trying to challenge myself to use rest just a little less. Sometimes it’s from fear. Like winning a battle on red health consistently feels scarier than winning with green health. Even if the outcome is equally favourable. Rest is certainly part of my “style” but I don’t want to get stuck using it because of bias or laziness and never investigate alternatives.
Love the commitment to a sub hour time here. You knew it was possible and kept trying, making that last run oh so satisfying.

Had to stop about 20 minutes through to shoutout the Freeze + Stat-Boost strategy used multiple times in this video. There is something so refreshing about getting an early freeze for a guaranteed setup and potential sweep in Gen 1. Super fun video, Scott!

I always liked Lickitung in gen 1, but hated you could only get one as a trade. I used one for a "team rocket run" where Weezing, Arbok, meowth (one run as persian, one run as just meowth), Lickitung (Jessie's), and Victreebell (James's) with a noncombatant HM friend. Lickitung was usually the star of the team with the versatile moveset!
Also, Braeden Mclean mentioned the channeler should be named Mandy after "mandatory" and a little based off the creepy girl Mandy from "Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" that I'd like to second! Perhaps a title of Mandy the status witch, or just Mandy. :)
I have an idea that maybe, MAYBE, you could do that wouldn't give you a workload that isn't unreachable for you, who is very timely and efficient. Gen 1 pokemon in Gen 3, to see if super powerful gen 1 pokemon, such as Tauros, for example, seeing if they still feel good and hold up to being solid pokemon still. Obviously a direct comparisons would be.. difficult, at minimum, but if it could be done, reasonably, it would be neat to see! But, regardless, I'm always happy watching all your stuff, Scott! It's all great work
Ah, Lickitung; the licking Pokémon that couldn't lick. I love the design of this Chewit coloured lizard-like creature but never used one before. For a mid-to-late-game only Pokémon in most regions, it's stats are rather... lacklustre (wouldn't think it would have less Attack than Special, even after the split). Curious to see how this plays out though.
3:28 - Wouldn't result in Bide accumulating all the damage for those 3-5 turns of Disabled damage though. That sounds like you just made Bide stronger and thus a fair riskier play.
10:19 - Ironically, the tubby and hungry slow-moving lizard has tons of stamina.
15:23 - I'm pretty sure this counts as a pun so it's going to pain me to say this but... how about Mandy, because the Channeler is "mandatory."
21:03 - Sad Lickitung hurts my soul. C'mon buddy; it's just a spot of bad luck. Chin up!
28:35 - Deletes Ice Beam for Earthquake, then in the following fight, proceeds to use Mimic to get Ice Beam back. Just rather amusing how that played out.
38:10 - I think you may have gone a little insane here. Is a faster speed worth it when you're accumulating a higher reset count? I would assume the ranking at the end would take both metrics into account. It's funny that you mention that you're not a fan of Lickitung and then proceed to play through Pokémon with it five times in a row.

It has been theorised that lickitung was designed for a pre 1st gym normal type boss fight hence it's stats.

Someone may have already pointed this out but at roughly 14minutes you get a gen1 miss against the growlithe? How rude of the game 🤣 love lickitung but its stats make me sad. So many 'decent' gen 1 mons that are never used but getting to watch you give everyone their chance is so good! Love it dude❤

Badge boosts are way more fun, at least for me playing the game.
Is it ever useful to save Bubblebeam TM until right before Giovanni and just use watergun for the self-destructing hiker? Then you don’t have to waste a slot on surf, but have an okay water move for his ground types.
I always think about this. If the Pokemon has access to Ice Beam, I don't think that saving Bubblebeam is worth it. Yes it does more damage, but Rhydon's special is so bad that Ice Beam is good enough. Plus, Ice Beam is useful against the following rival's Sandslash and Exeggcute (which can cause some problems, specifically Stun Spore paralysis).

Wow, I would not have expected lickitung to be such a beast.
This is definitely a ditto, I'm a dittology, I can see features that only a ditto tranform in a licktung would have, like the tongue being 0.0001cm bigger.
Lickitung is a trolly tank and plays kind of like a Clefable, Wigglytuff, Polywrath, Golduck or slowbro you gotta either set up early on with a move like amnesia or swords dance or rely strictly on a good move pool like having ice beam and thunderbolt.
I am suggesting the name “Mandy” for the mandatory chandler

The beta names for Pokemon like Tonguetyd are so fun. Koffing and Weezing were NY and LA respectively, and Gyarados had the incredibly metal name of SKULLKRAKEN

No Lick toungue would have been forgotten if it hadned been for Jessy in the Anime.
Luky for her she traded it for a wobafet later that would have curbstomped pikachu if Jessy had two braincells to use it correctly.
The show is made for people with only two briancells, so it fits.

I'm not surprised it did well. I used a Lickilicky in Shining Pearl and was pleasantly surprised by its performance.

Weirdly enough the Pokemon I always forget in gen 1 is Wigglytuff. For some reason I think Jigglypuff you it's evolution in gen 2, even if I've seen it in Pokemon the first movie so many times.

All the coverage moves are a trap for Lickitung. His best moveset is fully embracing the badge boost with defense curl, SD, body slam, and earthquake for the majority of the playthrough
As a side note: having defense curl in the lategame allows you to outspeed the jinx and dragonite, makes the Agatha fight more consistent, and gives better damage ranges against the champion

She uses confusion and paralyse so much, gastlys are tricksters. She might have been the target, too.

Lickitung is one of those pokemons who I think got the worse name in english.
"Schlurp" is so much more fun.
Other gen1 Pokemon in that category are: Snorlax ("Relaxo") and Clefairy ("Piepi"). But I can at least somewhat understand why they did not go with the suggestive name for the pink one :D

31:45 I was expecting stomp, I don't remember if it has a flinch chance in gen 1 but it can also crit. When I saw how much mega punch did the first run I was certain double stomp would have been a better move.
Double stomp? It’s 65 base power, so less powerful than Mega Punch. But it does have a flinch chance in gen1
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Yeah, since mega punch just barely couldn't ohko Staryu, two stomps should still. Seismic toss was a 2hko so the crit and flinch chance is preferred.
