    Firestone charged me like 370 to do this (4 years ago) and i had seen a video similar to this AFTER. Ever since then i have been able to do all my repairs on my vehicle thanks to youtubers like you! U guys are the real heroes out here, an o2 sensor for my car brand new is only 40 bucks. I could have saved 330 dollars had i been smarter at that age.

    Okay for whoever reads my comment, this is important when replacing an O2 sensor. You HAVE to make sure the wires are as straight as possible and not twisted like this guy left them, the 02 sensor will probably still be "bad" if they are. And after hand tightening it then turn it a couple times with a socket to make sure it's tight but don't over tighten and make sure not to bend the 02 sensor or dent it or anything because they are very delicate and won't work properly if you do.

    • @erich2770
      @erich2770 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Also if you have enough room under the car by the sensor that you can fit a wrench, it's 7/8 is the universal 02 sensor size. But in a lot of cases the specialty tools are needed.

    Good video! You are so right about the hardest part of this job being getting the sensor out...In 2011 on a 2000 Toyota Tundra I needed to replace the exhaust manifold on the passenger side because neither myself nor a couple different muffler shops could get the o2 sensor out! It was a real pain! I'm doing the other side in the tomorrow.

    Great video, al i would add is the prep for disconnecting the sensors; like disconnecting the negative terminal on your battery before you start ( and writing down your radio stations if you dont have them memorized lol. And what you do after it is all done to test your work out.

    Thanks for your contribution Ben. I would only add this: Since the "O2 Sensor is one of the most misdiagnosed problems in a car;" and "there are lots of (other) parts that can go bad and cause..." the scan tool to throw an "O2 Sensor" problem Code, it sure would have helped the average "Do It Yourselfer" to know what those other problems could be. That way the DIY-fer watching your video can first test for those other problems to try and eliminate them, before going out and buying an O2 sensor which can be very expensive if you want to stick to OEM parts. For example: My gangster VW Dealership in Bethesda, Maryland, gave me a written price quote of $268.95 just for the O2 Sensor for my 2008 VW Jetta! Their "Labor" cost for the installation will probably be about another $300. Highway robbery! Some of the possible problems should include: a Vacuum hose check. An old, brittle, porous or cracked Vacuum hose (line) will cause extra O2 to be pulled into the exhaust manifold, thereby causing the Sensor to throw out a correct reading of "O2 Sensor problem." But, the problem in this example IS NOT the sensor! The problem is the high oxygen to Fuel ratio. The sensor is just doing it's job telling you there's too much O2 coming into the system causing it to run "lean." But, unfortunately reported as "O2 Sensor problem," when in fact the actual problem IS the Vacuum hose/line which needs to be changed. Other problems which will cause an "O2 Sensor problem reading include a defective heater wire (Check the resistance on the heater wire with an Ohm Tester (a.k.a. Digital Volto-meter). A low resistance reading on the heater wire means it's defective). Also, a loose or missing gas cap can also allow extra oxygen into the gas tank which will mix with the gas and will throw off the sensor which is also pulling in oxygen from the ambient air at the neck of the sensor. That ambient air intake, combined with the extra oxygen already mixed in with the gas, will cause a much higher O2 reading by the sensor and will trigger the check engine light. Upon scanning, a good scan tool will throw an O2 sensor problem code. But, the true problem is the loose or missing gas cap.

      I have a downstream o2 sensor code..says the heater to the 02 sensor isn't working..I looked under the car at the sensor and the wires looked exposed..question is would replacing the 02 sensor resolve the problem? Checked the fuse..its good

    An O2 sensor is also most reasons why "Your favorite mechanic" would have you replace an innocent Catalyst, then have you buy O2 Sensors (Up and Downstream). Why, well according to him, if a Catalyst is bad most likely an O2 Sensor is bad too, even though the Catalyst was never the problem; the O2 sensor/s were. So you're down, 3, 4, 5 hundred dollars with a smile.
    OBD2 Code P0420 is where the money is. Catalysts don't die easily but lots of crooks would have you believe it so, most of the time a downstream O2 sensor behind the Catalyst is what creates this OBD2 code, along with bad gas, bad air filter, leaking gases, and many other things. So be aware, always have a second opinion.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @GiotheGhreat
      @GiotheGhreat 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you are right about the crooks, I always look for a third opinions after checking several TH-cam videos, etc, some mechanics are just fucked up

    • @D4LM4R
      @D4LM4R 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** I believe most mechanics are crooks, that's how they'd make money, the same reason I became a devoted DIY. Online you can find a Bluetooth based OBD2 reader for less than $50, which you can use with a phone app called Torque, search the fault code online, watch it replaced on TH-cam and find how relatively easy most of the things are all the while feeling good about yourself. Hehe

      3, 4, 5 hundred? The cat for my car costs over a thousand dollars. I changed out my O2 sensors for $50 each and no more P0420 code!

    • @D4LM4R
      @D4LM4R 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      lastuberman Yes absolutely. Some cats cost you over a K, specially in California, and common sense is gonna dictate to replace sensors (Specially upstream) after cat has been replaced, so replacing sensors first and see if you get lucky is a wise move for DIYs.

    I believe 99% of auto repair shops will rip you off. One time I checked a few shops and they wanted a couple hundred dollars to replace an O2 sensor. I did it myself in just a few minutes. After driving around for a while the check engine light reset. This is how much a repair estimate is for my 2010 4runner: $493.63 or repair pal estimate: $372 to $673 with parts included. For labor only: $127 per hour X 2.2 hours. What? two hours to unbolt one sensor and bolt on a new one? RIPOFF!!

    • @tbone9246
      @tbone9246 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got all 4 replaced for $160.00 labor. I bought the sensors myself. I was also quoted 2.2 hours for the 2 bank 2 sensors. 1.9 hours for one and .3 for the other. 1 shop quoted me almost 200.00 labor for just the 2 sensors. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7. Me and my brother both got under the Jeep, no way to reach the 1 for sure. They must have to drop the exhaust and such for the 1 to be quoted as a 2 hour job. The owner of the shop even sarcastically said his mechanic had a fun time replacing all of them. 2 were 55.00, 2 were 30.00. Autozone has a deal right now on Bosch. I got a 20.00 gift card on each 1. So for about 260.00 I got all 4 replaced, pretty good deal. I figured I'd just do all 4 since I already needed 2. I'd recommend that to everyone. If 2 go the other 2 will probably be on their way out also.

      I'm lucky, I just found a great shop by me. Family owned and you can trust them. Fair priced and they do the job in a timely manner. My buddy who owns a collision shop recommended the shop to me. They just did all 4 O2 sensors cheaper than I was quoted for only doing 2 sensors at another shop. It's awesome to have a auto shop you can trust, is fair priced, and has great mechanics.

      @NPC Same shit happening here. Trying to keep alive A jag x type which is very common Ford engine but guess what? They refuse to fix the car or ruin it. Some other friends told me they can not even repair VW Golf cars here so people drive 250 km away. Here is 300k + population but mechanics did not educate themselves for more complex work.
      Only car they can fix here is from 1980's Fiat and renault tx 12 cars :) That is their knowledge base still. :)
      So i also think to invest on repair tools - maybe will cost less for long term.

    A very important step omitted in this otherwise excellent video: start & run the vehicle for several minutes to heat the sensor and the threaded fitting containing it. this will also help avoid galling on removal. be sure to wipe away any excess penetrating oil from the area before starting engine. Also bear in mind that the sensor/manifold/pipe will be extremely hot, so use caution.

    If you have disconnected the negative terminal on the battery when replacing the sensor, it will stay off for a day or two until the vehicle's computer gathers enough data to report back. After that, if it stays off, you're all set.

    Looks easy. I know the mechanic will charge me a ton of money. Wish I had a way to get the car up The mechanics are high priced here in Va.

    Looks simple enough, but like you said you did a lot of work to find out it WAS the O2 sensor. My 2013 Explorer using the obd says two codes P013C and P013Cpd so it could be a number of things. Would like to know how you determined that it WAS the 02 sensor.

    So I watched your video and enjoyed it. I bought a generic sensor for a 2007 Chevy Impala upstream sensor and it doesn't come with a wiring diagram. Any Chance you could help me identify which wires connect to which? Any help is appreciated.

    replacing an o2 requires basic knowledge as far as proper removal. if an o2 is commonly misdiagnosed, then a video showing what you guys did to determine a faulty o2 would make more sense

      Pedro Cisneros he has used an obd-II scan tool and it had shown the problems to be diagnosed, there is a video in his playlist I lf you want I'll give the link

      I was told by one garage that I needed to replace both O2 sensors when my check engine lite appeared. It was not the O2 sensor. It was the air flow sensor to the air filter. Glad I went to a garage that had a qualified technician to go thru the codes and pin point the real problem. The air flow sensor cost more than the O2 sensors, but I could have easily been stuck having both if I had not found the right garage and tech.

      @@randallkennedy7414 , I think that's what I replaced awhile back. When that air flow sensor is bad it will also show a code saying an 0-2 sensor is bad sometimes. That's what I was told at least. So as you did, replace that first and see if that takes the code away saying an O2 sensor is bad.

      Exactly why I learned to work on my own vehicles. You would not believe some of the diagnosis and cost of repairs I hear, being a female they think I'm mechanically inept and stupid. Even when I bought MAF cleaner I had to be instructed not to put it back together until its dry. Do car parts store people say that stuff to you guys?
      I'm waiting for my O2 sensors to arrive from Amazon today, I bought 2 upstream to replace both though my code only shows one not sending signal to PCM.

    How did you diagnose the O2 sensor versus the Catalytic converter failure?

    Can you show a easy way to change O2 sensors for infinity fx35, there are 4 different sensors and two camshaft sensors. Do you suggest to have a car fully maintained after over 200.000 miles to replace all of them at once? !?
