Not only might it have a heavy flywheel, but 5 cylinders in general are quite slow revving due to the inherent balancing needed for them as they are naturally more unbalanced than other configurations. Felt this when I drove my mate's old XR5 focus, but that car was tuned so it felt plenty fast anyway. The slow revving doesn't change my desire to own a 5 cylinder in the future though. I hope one day I'll own a V70r or an S2 or something.
@@xsduprwd3937 Unfortunately, there is a torque imbalance along the horizontal plane of the engine, meaning a five-cylinder is constantly trying to twist or flip over its length, from google..
@@moonbrothers9098 If you googled it, you will know a 5 pot is inherently a smoother motor. Your twist or flip analogy was a issue in the design which manufactures clearly engineered out of the finished product.
I own a xr5 but in the UK and it is a big car, mine is tuned to 281bhp and 431Nm of torque. When the roads are wet it is useless. It will spin the front wheels at 90mph in 3ed gear
I have the UK equivalent with the same old Sony radio. It was so old it only had phone connectivity for Bluetooth until I replaced the Bluetooth module with a newer Focus one in the glove box, then I could use it for audio too. They did a version with a screen and Sat Nav but my car wasn't optioned with it - though there are aftermarket mods with Android Auto and CarPlay, so it could be modernised somewhat. Mine didn't thankfully have keyless entry - I still have to press the button to unlock, which I much prefer, but keyless pushbutton start is definitely present and a must-have. Other options mine didn't have which were available new at the time (I bought mine used) included privacy tints, cooled (as well as heated) seats, adaptive cruise control (as opposed to non-adaptive) and adaptive electronic dampeners (not sure if only an option on standard spec as opposed to the sports versions). The drivers seat has all manual controls like the passenger seat (but adds adjustable lumbar support), with the exception of seat height which is electronic. Auto wipers and headlights and an auto dimming rearview mirror come as standard IIRC. There's also headlight washers in the bumpers. It's definitely a competent, powerful cruiser and not quite as exciting as some of my previous cars like the P10 Primera eGT which was a rev-happy I4. It can make some noise when you want it to and if you treat it to some mods, but I kept mine stock because when you want to be civilised it excels at that. It does handle well for its size, which is great for the British roads (and out your way too - I've driven 7.5k miles through Aus and NZ and enjoyed it!) - part of the reason I went for it over a Passat CC at the time - to remain engaged through the corners. The power drop from 5k is noticeable for sure, but the pull it gets from early on is the benefit you get from its setup. It hits max torque from 1,500 rpm through to 4,800 rpm, hitting max power at 5,000 after which it's pretty pointless staying in that gear. My Primera had a highport SR20DE which was only 110kw (150ps) but used to get that power at 6,400 rpm so it had a different urgency and energy to get the revs up, and would redline at 7,500rpm. God, I miss that car more than even my E30. Anyway, I got the Mondeo in 2017 for £5k ($9,300 NZD at that time) with 84k miles on the clock (135k km), and it's now at 180k km or so and it's been a nice way to cruise. Top speed is 152mph (244km/h), but nowadays I just roll on cruise control at the limit.
Doesnt really sound special, normally these 5 cylinders sound like mini v10s. maybe with an intake that can be remedied. but ill alwayd appreciate people driving something novel like this. keeping the odd cars on thr road.
I had a Milltek exhaust on mine, it sounded fantastic. Completely different to the car being reviewed - it even had some subtle overrun pops too! I also ended up putting a Bluefin tune on it as well, gave it heaps more pull from the mid-top end.
I've always liked the 5 cylinder Mk4 Mondeos. They are bloody rare in NZ though. As for the engine it can be woken up considerably and a good exhaust system goes along way on a 5 cylinder. I've owned a mk4 Mondeo but it was just a boring 4 banger with an auto. Exceptionally comfy car, safe and great factory sound system. It was the rubbish auto gearboxes Ford fitted to the later mk4s and on that killed the Mondeo name. But if you get one with the standard 6 speed auto or manual their actually sweet cars.
I want to disagree with the Mondeo not making any noise, but then I remembered mine has aftermarket fartboxes, so it sounds pretty much like an old Audi Quattro without the blowoff (for now)

mmm I believe a 5 cylinder is well known to be smoother than a 4 cylinder. Only the state of tune will effect its ability to rev quickly.

That's a good point the S60R I reviewed also was quite slow revving. A lighter flywheel would definitely help though

Wow that would be insanely fast!
_another great comparison, gotta say I’d rather a Focus XR5 👍🏼_
Yeah me too
The Mondeo has a longer wheelbase than the BA Falcon! They are big!
Really? Gee that's bigger than I thought
@@KiwiCarLife Mondeos are full size sedans, for EU standards. Like Passat/A6 size and competitor. I have a wagon, and it's almost 5 meters

Nice man! Sounds like you’ve got a good car
When I saw six cylinders I thought it was a test of the ' 380 '. Next time ?😅
Goodness me
Another good vid, I do like the XR5, but you guessed it... I'd have the Bimmer, it just has more appeal to me!
Yeah me too
Really dislike turbo engines that fall flat over 5000rpm, but good cruiser that Mondeo
Yeah this one is especially bad for that

This car already had an intake, turbo cars need an exhaust to sound good, with an intake you just get more turbo noises not engine noise

Cause it’s got a factory exhaust? Would sound sick if it had a nice exhaust on it. Intake isn’t gonna make the engine any louder

Trash from factory they’re silent haha
You need to review a runx corolla with the 2zzge engine those things rip hard
I’ve done a celica a while back it was good, really lacked torque though
I have an xr5 running stage 4+ rs turbo etc etc hitting around 430 bhp and 480 ftlb torque. Its by any means slow.
Wow that would be quick! Although stage 4 and only 400hp? Less than I expected
we need some videos with the 3.2, no more 3.0 videos..
It's coming, just need to upload the last two 130i videos first
Ohhhhhh yeah toasta

PS THE XR5 is for sale
How good
By the way the mondeo has 320Nm of torque with 220 Hp
Yes tbh that makes more sense
162kw seems very weak for a 2.5T 5 cylinder.
yeah my civic 1.5T makes the same...
Yeah it's not especially fast...
It’s very heavily detuned from factory to meet nz standards, can easily make a lot more power but still a cool car to drive
Volvo tuned these for torque more than high rpm power. Tune us no different for NZ. Same power in Aus.
@@markmcgrath9098 I got told by Mondeo tech don’t know if it is true but yea told me it’s detuned as
