my face when I opened the bag: (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`) thank you so much, friend! And everyone, don’t let Liz fool you, it IS in fact perfect 🥹 (also that red dress!!! Thrift find of the year!!!)
woah the purple top actually looks really cool! very witchy whimsigoth core and the shade of purple looks killer with your hair! ⭐⭐ also the patchwork tote for kathleen is soooo cute oh em gee!!! I want to make one now, especially since my craft cupboard and scraps stash look a lot like yours hahahah ps your outfit and hair in the intro/outro clips look incredible!! the plaid vest with the red dress 🤩
pro tip for gathering thicker fabric in future - instead of basting (loose straight stitching) down the thing you want to gather, do a wide zigzag stitch over a piece of cord/embroidery floss/twine (making sure that you don't accidentally sew the twine down)!
or what i usually do is set stitch length to the longest it can go and then i set my tension all the way up. machine will automatically gather it for you. just make sure you have a long thread at the beginning and end so you can adjust
Not sure if anyone commented this but there’s this thing called fray check that comes in a squeeze bottle! You may have to use a pin to get it to come out.
I recently Rit- dyed something black same way you did and it turned out light grey, so instead I tried again using the stovetop method and then using the colorstay dye fixative and now it’s solid black :) so I’d highly recommend Although my stitching stayed white too but I don’t mind it either hah
The purple top would look good with the corset top layered together. All of your flips came out great and this inspired me to get to my pile. The bag you made for Kathleen is amazing 🤩. Awesome video
Maybe interfacing, or using bias tape on a shredding hem would work? Giving structure to what's left, or creating a new more solid edge especially if you're putting lace over it anyway seem like the best options.
Great job on the thrift flips! It's so inspiring to see people get things done in their own lives. It's making me want to tackle my own 'alter' pile. Also, the fit you're wearing while narrating makes you look like such a character! It's giving knowledgable and quirky librarian. I absolutely adore it.
Back in the days if Madonna, I bought a fifties lace wedding gown. I cut it off at the skirt, which was full, but not pouffy. I also cut off a pair of jeans, just below the pockets at the lower edge of the zipper. The gown was a wired busier top. Not for me. But, it had a separate lace jacket that fit great, and was fitted; with rhinestones and a wired collar/lapels. I sewed the skirt to the top of the jeans. It was short and really cute. With either a denim jacket or the lace one, I had two fab outfits! I also had leather height top punch cut booties in off white, or silver platform sandals. I danced in the outfit for five years! It was the Michael Jackson era, and mesh/ lace gloves were “in”. Red lipstick, eye shadow and blush…. You get the picture. Oh and the requisite “ big hair.” Remember, “ Everything old is new again. “ and fab gowns are twenty bucks at Goodwill! I bought one on Sunday that has a train ten yards long!!!
Idea for the next lace, frayed edge situation….maybe reinforce the frayed edge of delicate fabric with an added piece of similar weight lace. So, fabric, new lace, then lace.
I love the way you put this all together, using a variety of diy techniques. I love how thee purple (meant to be black) top turned out. Such a pretty color, and who would've thought that'd be the outcome using black dye. Love the Laura Ashley dress paired with the vest. I was thinking of them together when you did the thrift haul. Handmade gifts are super special. I think Kathleen will really appreciate it, and get good use of it.
"This lace slip has become quite battered by... just the turmoil of existence on this plane" that slip is just like me omg (but just like the lace slip, we can also make a little change and come out better in the end✌🏾✨)
The red stripes you drew onto the tank top make me nervous for your laundry, but maybe you used ink that is meant for fabric and won't wash out or dye the rest of your clothes a little red/pink. I loved watching this, great inspo for my own scrap and thrift flip stash :)
If you want the shirt to end up black try using something with tannin to help fix the dye, it’s a great non-toxic mordant! Not sure if that was the intention with the salt bc a lot of people mistake it for a fixative but it’s definitely good to get an even color! Hope this helps!
When making a bag Interfacing is your friend. The weight of anything in that tote bag is going to pull on the fabric without it and it will become misshapen. Love, Love, Love all the flips though. You did awesome. Big Hugs
To fix the fraying of the lace, you might be able to utilize seam tape in that endeavor. I also just did a ton of clothing dying a week ago and used a warm water method because the fabric I was dying could not handle hot water. You just have to soak the item in regular warm water before you put it in the dye bath. I also kept the items in the dye bath for a very long time since I wasn't using hot water. I haven't laundered the items yet, but the colors look fantastic so far. 😊
you can use thin iron on interfacing on shredding fabric and then darn over it :) its not perfect but its especially undetectable on lace and ive used it to restore loads of things (esp my friends flouncy thin festival pants :,) those things always rip and fray)
I love this type of video!!! Keep doing them till your thrift flip pile is complete! Also love the tote! You might have inspired me to make my own version!
The tote bag was my favourite - what a great way to use uo fabric scraps! Would love more thrift flips, they will eventually nudge me towards my pileof projects in progress...
That may or may not be my childhood bedroom chair! I wonder if you noticed if either of the knobs on top seemed glued on. So cool to see it again even if its not mine!
For the fraying slip -- maybe you could reinforce the edge eith some iron-on hemming tape or interfacing? Or even reinforce it with some wide ribbon sewed on with a zigzag stitch?
For ruffles on thicker fabric i like to use a piece of string and a zigzag stitch - place the string where you would like the ruffles, then sew over it with a really wide stitch without actually sewing the string (you just kind of frame it with the stitch, idk how to explain differently), then use the string to pull and create ruffles 😊
One thing that seems not important but hugely improves the appearance and ease of sewing projects is pressing as you go, pressing open the seam allowances especially makes it so much easier to match seams up on quilt squares
Your patchwork is so clean- I also hoard all sorts of scraps and doodads but I have so many hobbies and projects that I know they'll be useful to me, it hasn't failed me yet!!
I actually really love the purple colour with the light stitching on the shirt, totally support keeping it that way for a while! you can always dye it black later as you said
I don’t know if you’ve ever done anything similar to this, but I think it would be cool if you did a video where you styled things you’ve made/up cycled for a week!
So I think what might have happened with the dye is that it was made of two pigments, a green one and a purple one. Green and purple are opposites so when combined would make grey/black. The green washed away when you rinsed; the purple stayed and dyed the fabric… I’ve noticed when writing on my skin with black marker pen when I wash it the water turns blue/green but the stain left behind will be orangey red .. Could be what happened?
I saw a video where a woman dyed a cotton dress a lavender color but then the polyester looking lining was blueish. So maybe the dye reacted weird to what the cloth was made of
Congratulations! For doing this and for how you did it. I think, the blouse looks awesome in not-black, just putting it out there. Looking forward to the rest of the mending/flip stash - these videos motivate me so much to mend or flip my own stuff instead of discarding items. All the best from Germany!
For the slip, when fabric surrounding the repair is fragile, a long term solution is to reinforce the fabric with a patch and perhaps some stitching (like sashiko)- tye patch should be a similar thickness and drape similarly to the original fabric. It's a little tine consuming, but it lasts
Wowow, this is your best thrift flip yet! Watching you dye that top was quite a doozy though, since I've done it a few times (would highly recommend getting one of those five gallon buckets from any hardware store if it's something you're gonna do regularly though, since it makes things real easy) and have a bottle of that same dye waiting in the wings. I really loved the chair and the bag, but this is a good reminder to tackle my pile (though I can't sew, so gonna finally try to get things tailored.)
You are a 🧚♀️ creative genie 🧚♀️…” only” 10 things in a week… lol.. I’ve only polished two pairs of ankle boots and that took me weeks to start. Only the flirtation of possible mould rallied my butt. 😁 my fav. White tank top, tres 50’s box top ❣️
More thoughts on fraying fabric: if the fraying is extensive, you may find it works/looks better to skip the fray stop and to patch from underneath instead. Find some fabric that is a similar weight or even lighter (such as netting). Patch to your original frayed fabric with stitches that are tiny on the right size (so they're less visible) and long on the wrong side (so you get through the patching faster). If the frayed part of the fabric is visible, you might do a satin stitch over it to neaten that up.
I've been binge watching your content lately and I have to come and say how much I enjoy it! I got so inspired by the corset top idea in this video that I'm itching to get started with that!! (But need to finish other WIPs first 💔...)
Omg u saving stuff like scraps that’s what I do and my husband hates it because I have so much stuff but I ALWAYS find a good use for everything lol like u 😂I thought i was the only one who saves everything lol
Green + Purple = grey (they're complimentary colours) so if you have dark shades of green + purple = black, so the green washing out was the dye not fixing. It's a good idea to boil it a bit and make sure that you keep it in there overnight if you didn't leave it in that long. Additionally the reason the stitches don't dye is because typically polyester thread is used for stitching rather than cotton, if you use a polyester dye you will be able to dye them, there's some polycotton dyes which may be useful for you, but generally you'll want to use cotton for the main fabric so it can be a bit expensive if you want it all one colour. (Or at least the cost of two dyes). Also generally 1kg of fabric is like about 1 pair of jeans or 4 t-shirts
Major inspo for me tackling my alteration pile! Also for fraying fabric you could try 'fray stop' - it's a special fabric glue designed to reduce fraying and you just apply a strip of it to the raw edge. Then you can hem it. (Awesome for those without an overlocker like myself) ❤️
I dye a lot & some things do not dye darker. You might be able to get the tunic darker with more dye (meaning using more at once) for saturation, but it may still be a dark gray.
Great DIY’s!!! I love these types of videos. I think it shows people how to not give up on pieces too quickly. So thanks for putting this out there! Love your videos and style! It might help to put some antifray glue on the nightgown. It dries hard, so if you haven’t used it before, only use a little. I used this on some lace I was upcycling to prevent fraying after I cut it. It worked great and made it much sturdier to stitch through, but I didn’t like the feeling of a lot of it against my skin. Please ignore if you find a better solution 💜
@@beepwrld imo that's what makes it extra cute...the strap idea with multiple ways of wearing it was soo creative...if u ever decide to add a few pieces to your Etsy I'll def buy!
Yaaaaaaaaaay for another tote bag diy!! It turned out so fun. I am once again tempted to try my hand in making one myself. Hand sanding with sheer willpower sounded way too familiar... I used to spend so much time doing just that with whatever cool details I decided to come up with in my woodwork at school :D I actually think you might have been better off without an electronic sander after all, there were so many curved surfaces and different details that you would have ended up having to buy lots of different sanding bits for the machine and still potentially ended up doing some by hand. Also I learned the hard way that hand sanding is sometimes better, because you have more control and will not accidentally make a dent in your perfect curved shape... For the larger straight surfaces on the other hand, instead of just holding the sanding paper in your hand, my tip would have been to attach the paper on a block of wood or something similar with a straight surface. That way you can just hold on to the block and the result should be decent.
We have built-in storage next to our leaded glass sliding doors (I live in a 1930's style Dutch apartment and yes I'm obsessed with it lol). There's 4 built in shelving units/cupboards and I've dedicated 2 to my crafting/art supplies 😅 so uhhh yes it's totally fine to save and salvage usable materials!
This is inspiring me to tackle my flip and to-be-altered pile! My birthday is December 8th so the idea of a patchwork bag is definitely intriguing too haha
Watching thrift flip videos is one of my faves, but I’m such a coward when it comes to me actually trying to diy something 😅 anyone else a former gifted kid who’s afraid to fail lol (actually not funny but yanno) I LOVE the first tee with the repainted flowers, the floral vest and the dark velvety pants!
You mentioned the corseted to was giving your machine trouble, maybe offsetting the two ends (one just above the other) would make it stitch down a little smoother? I hope this makes sense
my face when I opened the bag: (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`) thank you so much, friend! And everyone, don’t let Liz fool you, it IS in fact perfect 🥹 (also that red dress!!! Thrift find of the year!!!)
!!! you are so welcome !!! & too kind!!! 🥹❤️
(& ikr!! truly my thrifting peak)
My craft hoard is called my “Box of Possibilities.” My grandma had one and the tradition continues with me. 😂
Your outfit, your hair and your glasses are just so perfect together in this video! You look like you came out of an 80's movie!
thank you so much!! I was thinking the same thing lol, felt straight out of stranger things
came for 80's aesthetic. stayed for the incredible personality
16:39 Loved your final thoughts on the straight stitch - "I am a woman in STEM for that, honestly" 😆
woah the purple top actually looks really cool! very witchy whimsigoth core and the shade of purple looks killer with your hair! ⭐⭐ also the patchwork tote for kathleen is soooo cute oh em gee!!! ps your outfit and hair in the intro/outro clips look incredible!! the plaid vest with the red dress 🤩
The purple top would look great with the black corset top she altered too!
thank you!!! & omg i hope you make one and if you do... I'd love to see a pic on ig hehe.
PS thank you so much I was loving that look!!!
omg this is such a great idea
pro tip for gathering thicker fabric in future - instead of basting (loose straight stitching) down the thing you want to gather, do a wide zigzag stitch over a piece of cord/embroidery floss/twine (making sure that you don't accidentally sew the twine down)!
oo this is such a handy tip, thank you!!
I have been researching better ways to gather fabric without a foot for MONTHS, this is genius!!!!
or what i usually do is set stitch length to the longest it can go and then i set my tension all the way up. machine will automatically gather it for you. just make sure you have a long thread at the beginning and end so you can adjust
Lol its so funny how creative people have so many unfinished projects in their house, that we eventually finish a year later.
More dyi of your thrifted clothes! I love watching you adapting clothes to your style.
noted!! thank you sm!
Not sure if anyone commented this but there’s this thing called fray check that comes in a squeeze bottle! You may have to use a pin to get it to come out.
When dying black, it works best when also using navy blue dye. The blue helps the black darken
The adjustable straps on the bag are ingenious! Just found your channel and immediately subscribed :)
I recently Rit- dyed something black same way you did and it turned out light grey, so instead I tried again using the stovetop method and then using the colorstay dye fixative and now it’s solid black :) so I’d highly recommend
Although my stitching stayed white too but I don’t mind it either hah
that is great to know, thank you! I think I'd definitely try stovetop next time.
Contrast stitching it cool im into it!!
Have you tried a fabric marker on the stitching?? I haven't tried it yet but ive seen someone else do this for the thread that didn't dye
The purple top would look good with the corset top layered together. All of your flips came out great and this inspired me to get to my pile. The bag you made for Kathleen is amazing 🤩. Awesome video
The multiple ways to wear the tote is blowing my mind!!!!!!!! I am now absolutely going to make one

Also loved this whole video.

we are all the slip..... experiencing turmoil but just in need of a lil care:')
the howel's moving castle pants are my new favorite article of clothing ever, like it's a NEED.
Love the flips!! ❤
The white crop top with the added ribbons + the pants you paired it with looks so 80s!! ❤❤❤
The red stripes you drew onto the tank top make me nervous for your laundry, but maybe you used ink that is meant for fabric and won't wash out or dye the rest of your clothes a little red/pink. I loved watching this, great inspo for my own scrap and thrift flip stash :)

Very happy to have watched this. I'm getting into sewing, mending, sustainability etc and your stuff is great inspiration :)
The lace corset over that purple/black blouse would look so cool!
When making a bag Interfacing is your friend. The weight of anything in that tote bag is going to pull on the fabric without it and it will become misshapen. Love, Love, Love all the flips though. You did awesome. Big Hugs
the interior fabric is suprisingly sturdy!! but this is good to know thank you!! (for the tip and the kind words!!)
To fix the fraying of the lace, you might be able to utilize seam tape in that endeavor. Fray stop glue! It's your best friend for frayed edges
omg and for the ribbon corset top you can change out the ribbon whenever!! and maybe even try chain in it 😊
can we talk about how cute you look in the talking portion of this?? that red dress + vest combo is perfection!
currently sorting my own piles and this pops up on my feed... well done, algorithm
For lace, consider using that hemming tape that dissolves when washed to hold it in place.
you can use thin iron on interfacing on shredding fabric and then darn over it :) its not perfect but its especially undetectable on lace and ive used it to restore loads of things (esp my friends flouncy thin festival pants :,) those things always rip and fray)
I love this type of video!!! Keep doing them till your thrift flip pile is complete! Also love the tote! You might have inspired me to make my own version!
thank you so much!! & ahh I hope you do!! I might make another for myself>:)
So cool to see it again even if its not mine!
omg that would be crazy!!! They don't seem glued on to me but I'm not sure I could tell so I'm going to assume it's the same chair hahah, I love that
For the fraying slip -- maybe you could reinforce the edge eith some iron-on hemming tape or interfacing? Or even reinforce it with some wide ribbon sewed on with a zigzag stitch?
As much as I loath both patchwork and ruffles...I really want to make something in patchwork with added ruffles now. That bag is stinkin' cute! 😀
omg, I'm extra honored you liked it then!!😂😂
LOVED that you took a marked to your striped shirt
For ruffles on thicker fabric i like to use a piece of string and a zigzag stitch - place the string where you would like the ruffles, then sew over it with a really wide stitch without actually sewing the string (you just kind of frame it with the stitch, idk how to explain differently), then use the string to pull and create ruffles 😊
the way I gasped when the ruffles were shown! Such a cute idea! I'll definitely be adding that to my patchwork tote I plan on making :)
The way the red stripe transformed the tank top 🤯🤯 so amazing you accomplished this all in a week!
truly mind blowing 🤯 🤯 !!
(haha thank you so much!! it's helpful that I have more free time than the average person)
One thing that seems not important but hugely improves the appearance and ease of sewing projects is pressing as you go, pressing open the seam allowances especially makes it so much easier to match seams up on quilt squares
Fray check, sold in walmart craft or sewing section. Works
Love your hair red. It looks very natural on you. Great job on the projects
Your patchwork is so clean- I also hoard all sorts of scraps and doodads but I have so many hobbies and projects that I know they'll be useful to me, it hasn't failed me yet!!
I actually really love the purple colour with the light stitching on the shirt, totally support keeping it that way for a while! you can always dye it black later as you said
I don’t know if you’ve ever done anything similar to this, but I think it would be cool if you did a video where you styled things you’ve made/up cycled for a week!
you're so clever and this is inspiring! makes me want to be a crafty gorl
These are all so cute! For the fraying, fray stop is amazing and if you don't have a serger you can zig zag stitch the seams!
If you use clear nailpolish around the edges of fabric that usually stops it fraying 😊
A zigzag stitch, or even better, a satin stitch over the frayed edge would be a great method for the slip dress!
ahh great to know thank you!!!
Good video to watch while I tackle my upcycle pile
Loved this video - you're inspiring, creative and clever - and love your humour!! Happy DIYing 🌞🌞🌞
So I think what might have happened with the dye is that it was made of two pigments, a green one and a purple one. Green and purple are opposites so when combined would make grey/black.

I’ve noticed when writing on my skin with black marker pen when I wash it the water turns blue/green but the stain left behind will be orangey red ..

I saw a video where a woman dyed a cotton dress a lavender color but then the polyester looking lining was blueish. So maybe the dye reacted weird to what the cloth was made of
There is a product called fray check but clear nail polish will work too
Add couple tablespoons to the fabric and ice water 24-48 hours before dye set on fabrics that’s what works for me when tyedyes😊
Congratulations! For doing this and for how you did it. I think, the blouse looks awesome in not-black, just putting it out there. Looking forward to the rest of the mending/flip stash - these videos motivate me so much to mend or flip my own stuff instead of discarding items. All the best from Germany!
Black is so common, and ehh. I love that shady of purple! I'd never have thought that black dye would make such a lovely shade.
For the slip, when fabric surrounding the repair is fragile, a long term solution is to reinforce the fabric with a patch and perhaps some stitching (like sashiko)- tye patch should be a similar thickness and drape similarly to the original fabric. It's a little tine consuming, but it lasts
Re dye the tunic in the synthetic dye that rit has and that should dye the thread has worked for me
These projects were so nice and so unique! I also tried to eyeball a heart shaped tote bag for my best friend and I really liked it 😍😍
those paisley pants! dreaming of the day I can find those at a thrift store
This was a very enjoyable video! Well done on finishing and advancing on all of these projects!!
Oh my god! I’m from maryland and randomly came across your videos while knitting 🧶 love the channel!

I would try some fusible interfacing along the torn edge of that slip to reinforce the seam.
oo that's a solid idea
Yaaaaaaaaaay for another tote bag diy!! It turned out so fun. I am once again tempted to try my hand in making one myself.
Hand sanding with sheer willpower sounded way too familiar... I used to spend so much time doing just that with whatever cool details I decided to come up with in my woodwork at school :D

This is inspiring me to tackle my flip and to-be-altered pile! My birthday is December 8th so the idea of a patchwork bag is definitely intriguing too haha
yay!! a DIY birthday gift to yourself perhaps?👀
i love your new background setup with the picture wall, i feel like it matches your personality so well
Love everything about this 😍😍 colouring only ever other stripe of the tanktop was so smart omg
thank you so much!!! It worked out quite well hehe >:)
Fraycheck works great for fraying fabric
Watching thrift flip videos is one of my faves, but I’m such a coward when it comes to me actually trying to diy something 😅 anyone else a former gifted kid who’s afraid to fail lol (actually not funny but yanno)
I LOVE the first tee with the repainted flowers, the floral vest and the dark velvety pants!
Actually love the purple too with contrasting thread, happy accident
And that bag is soooo cute
Make another but bigger
You mentioned the corseted to was giving your machine trouble, maybe offsetting the two ends (one just above the other) would make it stitch down a little smoother? I hope this makes sense
PS I love how it turned out! And the white top & velvet pants are so awesome. Great job. TYSM for the inspiration
Love your bag for Kathleen! ;)
Woohoo, great job! Looking forward to seeing the rest of the projects
This motivates me to tackle my own DIY pile ♥️
Please let us know how the pained items last in the wash!
Love the chair, love the bag!
