- Ron Stroeder's Truck and Trailer Inc. in Walkerton Ontario with his newest 6V53 Detroit Diesel for his '86 Chev 1 ton 4X4. This Truck has had a 6V53 since 1992 in one form or another. This time a NOS military crate motor. Dave Molnar from Impax Mfg. in Durham Ontario created the conversion and all the parts.
Cummins, duramax, powerstroke, cat, etc. They're all cool but Detroit takes the prize for coolness factor
Detroit’s sound cooler, but when it comes to having balls, and reliability CAT, and Cummins are by far more superior .
dave0z96 either way id take any detroit over any other diesel
@@dave0z96 2 stroke Detroits are reliable as hell
@@jdlawless_fuel1416 Not like Cats and Cummins . I worked for Dyer Construction in Indiana and we had them in the Terex bowl scrapers they were always breaking and low on power, the up time on the Cats were far better . The fuel economy was bad as well . Back in the day they were always the cheaper alternative to Cat, and Cummins for a reason . They aren't a bad product, but compared to their competition they weren't as good .
@@dave0z96 everyone I've been around has power and reliability for days, but they were always maintained well.
One hell of an engine. I obviously don't know what it looked like prior to the blower install but, she sure would look snazzy with a fresh coat of the traditional "Detroit Green" paint on it. Irregardless, it's still a beautiful piece of machinery.
Thanks for sharing your project.
Kind regards, Eric Dee.
I'd say it'd look better with a 47 year 'abandoned in the woods' patina on it, but yanno.
Good god that whine was awesome!!
@fimmyles We're not sure what it will do yet! The motor is going in the truck but not quite done. This large Whipple moves a LOT of air. Way more than the original set-up. We obtained 12 lbs boost pressure even tho the exhaust valves are open during the scavenge and this is without exhaust restriction of a turbo. This is many times more than a stock 653 non turbo blower is capable of. We love 2 stroke Detroits and this latest one will be really fun especially with the jakes.
Defs being added to my favourites! awesome job! hoping to find myself a 453 to build a ratrod pickup around!
@orng1 Were kind of excited! The Jakes will be fun too.
Its going into the '86 chev 1 ton single wheel 4X4 that has had a 653 since 1992 with various changes and additions along the way. I pulled my big fifth wheel to Davenport IA once a few years ago with it - over 1200 miles round trip. Other than needing ear plugs(!) it was a great fun run. Now with the newest motor it will pull the sled in the open class like no tomorrow once we get it tweeked. Stay tuned for more!
Kwantwz hp??
i would love to do this to my v3500. i love detroit diesels
I don't get it, it doesn't sound like a Detroit Diesel anymore. That whine would drive me nuts. There's nothing wrong with the stock blower, just through a couple of turbos on it and call it a 6V53T or 6V53TT. Just my 2 cents, I'll stick with my 76 Ford 4-53T highboy crewcab.
Your stupid. All you can do is put this down. This engine is over your experience level. Grow up and shut up little girl
Whipple superchargers are objectively better than roots blowers. They are more efficient at higher rpms and introduce less heat into the intake air than a roots which reduces air density in the cylinders. They also compress the air as well, thus generating a actual boost in air density versus what the normal roots blower would do. This is not only a way to increase HP but fuel economy and torque output by better using the energy it removes from the crankshaft. Roots blowers are pre-civil war technology. Even the Nazis used Whipple superchargers for their submarine engines versus a normal roots blower. The only drawback to a Whipple supercharger is the cost.
One of the simplest diesel engines to work on of all time!
A MOTORCYCLE CHAIN?
LMAO..GOT DAM !! THAT SHIT WOULD COME OFF AND SAW THE VEHICLES FRONT END OFF
Good thing since they don't last long.
Kwantwz hp??
I wish we had that supercharger setup on our 44' MLB's in the C.G.
A little "red line for a good time" anyone?? 😎👌🍬
Prime example of why a good idea sux
There just isn't enough time in one lifetime to tinker with everything I'd like to. Congrats...
That sounds fucking amazing!!
@Bellefeuille66 All Detroits sound amazing to us!!!
No you are not crazy! Join the "Diesel confab club" and bring your creation. We meet once a year.
Thank you so much for the video you sweethearts excellent engine isn't it??????
@Bellefeuille66 No. I was asking why they put a Whipple super charger on there instead of the factory installed roots style blower. This one isn't turbo'ed anyway. nonetheless, your insight does not go unappreciated ;) As far as sound is concerned, you just can't beat one of these old two-strokes!
What type of potato and filter was used to film this epic moment?
"Neibours!!" "Friends n Brother Canadians"
I live in Kitchener, and thinkin seriously about putting a 4-53T and Fuller 9spd jakes n everything into a 78' 1/2 ton frame.
"Am I crazy??" Lets chat awhile, would like to cross ideas with y'all.
PS love the 653 'Green Machine' (cherry)
MrJIMMYJIMMERSON give me a call would like to chat with you....519.901.0756
very cool 53v
That'll make a fun truck.
@RustyCarnahan because roots blowers are mechanically inefficient and heat up the air more. the twin screw delivers more air per kW 'stolen' from the crankshaft, and doesn't heat up the intake air as much.
Were not sure... Not enough yet! We need to put the turbos on next to choke the exhaust enough to get the 12lbs boost we have now up to 60lbs then we'll see...
Jmo but I feel the 6v-53 is the best sounding detroit made....
The 6V-53 is one of the best sounding engines ever, yet this sounds kinda silly. The whine is way too much.
Maybe it's better in person?
I'm thinking it may sound better in the flesh... or metal in this case. I'm just making that assumption based on the potato camera so I can only assume the microphone is not stellar either
I want one in my 68 F-100 short bed..
Ron built it from scratch. The first incarnation was in 1992.
I'm not sure if I like the blower whine or the 2 stroke v6 exhaust note better
Neat setup, very cool sounding but man you should have made a better quality video been nice to have seen it better is all. Forgive me.
That sure looks like a roots style charger though...
love sound
Yea that blower belt will last about a day and leave you stranded.
Better re think that. Maybe go with a motorcycle chain setup.
that thing needs twin turbskis
Milage is about the same as before - not great. Boost pressure is limited because of the exhaust valves open when intake ports are open. Performance is low 160 hp compared to the stock blower/ turbo set-up (235) because of this. We will need to simulate exhaust back pressure that a turbo would provide to bring the boost up. Then I believe we will see some big gains.
Are you finished yet?? Need those numbers! LOL!
So you replaced the stock blower with another one. It is still considered normally aspirated unless it also has an exhaust driven turbo.
tcorris right, the stock blower had to be about the same but quieter, I wouldnt want to hear that all day, to each his own I guess, now the silver series TA’s those were badass
What did you design? Detroitzilla ?
Where did you get that blower? I looked online, and all they sell are kits for cars, they don't sell just the blower. I'd like to put one on our 4-71N.
@MrJIMMYJIMMERSON No you're not crazy! lots of guys have done 453s. Find a turbo one tho. A 6V53 will go in there but you need a ton
Im taking an old 80s chevy and turning it into a 6x6 and the setup I had before was insane and im doing it again but with a setup like yalls let me know asap please
@RustyCarnahan you mean turbo?..and prolly cause it sounds sweet and nobody else has one..? beats me
Did that whipple ever pay off to add?
What kind of flywheel are you using
Sounds like you need to adjust the injector rack there Sweetheart!!! That's usually what causes detroits to rev during idol like that!!! But I'm sure you handsome guys already new that!!!!! Also why spend that much for an engine and put a Whipple on it. There's much better compressors out there that don't need to hangout over the harmonic like that!!! Also should have utilized the cam fronts for the pulleys instead of an intier additional belt system. For no belts everything gear driven less break downs. Remember it's a two stroke with valves there all doing the same speed sugar!!! You also might want to check out a vertical compressor there really short and sqauty looking it just might fit under the hood without any mod's.
I've read somewhere they tend of running away
+HAPKAH ya my father used to rebuild them. he said it was only when they were really tired and crank case oil would seep past the rings or the injector plate was stuck open from wear
+HAPKAH ya my father used to rebuild them. he said it was only when they were really tired and crank case oil would seep past the rings or the injector plate was stuck open from wear
One injector hangs open the rest follow
Leaky turbos will run any of them away. When it burns all the oil out it will soon quit. Detroits may have that wrap cause they would actually run long enough to get to the Run Away point of disrepair. I agree with another comment. The motor sounds like shit now, that whipple aint right for it and the drive system he was bragging about.( strait off a vortec) lasted about 30 seconds and wont ever last. Try again, different aint always better.
Easy enough to deal with, just choke the air off. The secret to preventing the runaway is to have the rack properly set, that is usually what causes it.
that sound
What size Whipple is that? 4.0?
These came factory with a blower on it. Why swap blowers and not just add a turbo to increase power?Im not being a smart ass Im just wondering the reason for this.
deegan727 parasitic lost, the roots style is very inefficient, while a twin screw can built pressure while consuming less power. If you add turbos it will multiply the effectiveness much more than the old style roots.

But a Detroit 2 stroke will not run without it's blower. So either way you have to have it.
jarrad mcdaniel Did you even read what I said? The twin screw is a positive displacement blower just like the roots, it’s just a lot more efficient, the only problem in this set up is, since it’s a non turbo version the cam is set up to let all the extra boost out to reduce back pressure on the roots blower, it it was a turbo motor, the cam is set up the reduce the exhaust over last by a couple of degrees allowing the intake ports to be open while the exhaust valves close sooner.
@@B0RN2RACE100
Apologies just now seeing this after a year.
Yes I know about the tutbo sett up.
Hunt down blower with bypass cams are the same according to the Detroit book I have timing is a bit different
Different pistons for compression ratio.
But the old blower would definitely be more reliable.
it is his build regaurdless.
But the 4.0 blower is to small for the engine the engine is a 318 ci or 5.2 liter.
The Detroit would never see boost
It would actually hurt the performance .
And I've done found out a 71 series won't fit.
So yes turbo charging would be the only viable option or larger injectors
Like a n65 brown tag.
Max size you can go without a turbo.
Civilian 6v53s came out with n or s 45 injectors. Most put n55 red tags in them for extra power.
And if you wanted to go bigger than that a throttle retarder was definitely recommended as to not melt down cylinders and use a good pyrometer.
Detroit nut here.
jarrad mcdaniel cool info. I’m more of a cat fan, never drove a 2 stroke Detroit but I wanted too. The 12.7 seemed weak down low. If you say the 4.0 twin screw is not big enough I believe you. On paper it seemed to flow enough CFMs
its racersedge8569by the way
Detroit 6V 53 supercharger??
So, if the belt fails then the engine shuts down. There’s a reason they were gear drive from the factory. Just sayin.
How about an aluminum 6v53 2 stroke, where can i find one?
Military surplus yard. They come out of M551s
These were special for the military and were run in small batches. They had leak problems through the castings and were hand worked to fix them. They truly were special, hand built really, and each step was watched by a government inspector. They were run in in a special test area and were certified as to the HP and torque, truly the best the shop could produce.
Before you find the engine, you better find yourself about $13,000
whipple supercharger nice upgrade, but dont you need some back pressure on that to get the most outa that turbo charge that bad boy lol
As far as I knew, the DD blowers are just used to scavenge the exhaust out. Their default state is blown otherwise they don't really work. But you're right, to actually give the engine power you need to turbo it or, better, twin-turbo it :)
+vtr0104 Ive always thought you could maybe do some exhaust valve timing so they close earlier so there will be a small period of time where the exhaust valve is closed but air is still being pushed into the cylinders. Idk it might work
Would a compound turbo give it a little low end torque?
Doesn't have exhaust valves just scavenger ports in the middle of the cylinder walls.
Bobby Lane they have intake ports in the cylinder walls and exhaust valves in the head.
What's that going into?
Why the whipple, and not the factory blower?
how many horesepower do you think it has now?
huckster78 it has 217hp Grampa is gunna turbo charge it soon
Where can I get a setup like this all complete with engine tranny and transfercase and what is the cost let me know im dying to have a bitchin truck again
where'd you get this baby?
Kwantwz hp??
c'mon man i need to know i already have the truck just need the engine
Hi Tim, Don't get on here much - so busy at my shop. My friend who owns the truck is a Detroit 2 stroke guy. Give me a ring at 519 369 1003 and I'll hook you up. He has lots of that stuff.
you do know you lost power by doing that right the blower is not making any extra power all it is do is bring air to in because a 2 stroke will not suck in air on its own the blower that was on it the gear driven the one you put on it with slip
Ninja Bus Fan 6V53
Do I yeah
"Create motor"
Cost??? Ummm lets see....
thinking bout doing something like that too! i want to puta a 6v53t detroit in my 3/4 ton 72 chevy and beef up the front suspension.
Ha! Typical Detroit Diesel. All noise and smoke, but no power
The whine ruined the soundtrack.
Void33 - if they had the air cleaner on it, it wouldn't be so Whiny.
