This comment comes a bit late, but here's the reason I left a few key characters out:
Rowlf the Dog - He's pretty much been the same since day one. There's not much difference between Rowlf in the 50's and Rowlf today, and that's fine. He's a great character, though, and I'm glad to see he has so many fans.
Oscar the Grouch - Aside from being orange, Oscar's personality, like Rowlf, has really not changed much.
Snuffy - I touched on Snuffy in the first installment of 50 Retired Sesame Street Muppets. I think I'd mostly be repeating myself if I did it again.
Thank you for all your comments and support, everyone!

You might be interested to know that the Count wasn't just a play on word of Count Dracula, it also came from a way of how people thought to deal with, "real vampires,"when they were believed in. They thought that the way to keep a vampire out of a village was to take some rice, as in a whole lot of it, dump it on the vampire's grave and he wouldn't be able to resist counting each grain. if you put enough the vampire would take all night to count the rice and wouldn't be able to bother anyone. That was the belief.

  • @NoParkingBerry
    @NoParkingBerry 4 ปีที่แล้ว +88

There actually is a reason why Telly has an obsession with triangles, and it was all thanks to writer Lou Berger. In the book "Sesame Street Unpaved", he said: "I remember I was home sick once, and I was watching my kid play with some triangles. I realized that I wanted to give Telly something that wasn't just neurotic, but a passion for something outside himself--and that became triangles."
Side note, I was so amazed to see the very first time Kevin Clash performed Elmo, even though he wouldn't "find his voice" until season 17, episode 2215. It's also good to know that we have confirmation on when exactly Kevin started playing the character, since sources varied on whether the year was 1984 or 1985. Production-wise, it's the former.
Great video, Colin, just like your other Muppet/"Sesame Street" stuff!

While that phase with me is long gone, there's just something about the Muppets that will ALWAYS put a smile on my face. At 35, you just might find me rocking and swinging to artists like Michael W. Smith, Morgan Cryar and Amy Grant because that was more my era of music, but something just kinda brings out the child in me when I hear Kenny Loggins start singing the Rainbow Connection. I remember the scary version of The Count, and while it was a little scary, he wasn't as bad as the narrator made him out to be. Frazzle was the scary one. I worried what Frazzle might do to the other Muppets. But, I liked having both of them be scary because they evoked a different kind of feeling than anyone else, and in the end, everything worked out.

Totally nailed the Count. I'm part of that 1st generation of viewers and well remember when the character made his debut - there was no mistaking that he was a Vampire w/a capital V and was frightened & uneasy w/ him, especially when he'd do the hyonosis bit - I'd actually get up and leave the room. Even after they toned him down, it took me a while before I was comfortable w/him. (I agree that you should do a follow up w/Snuffy, Oscar, etc.)

Thank you very much for making this video! It’s truly wild to learn about how different these characters were when they were first introduced. I’m a huge fan of just about all the characters you mentioned. I like Bog Bird a lot and I will always have fond memories of my early days watching him and Snuffy on their adventures. I also still prefer the original premise that only Big Bird can interact with Snuffy! My respect goes out to the people who like the different setup of the modern setup where Snuffy is a regular cast member and everyone recognizes him. I just really like the idea of having a private friend that you keep to yourself. I liked their private friendship and I connected better to that. I really like Elmo and Telly too. They always make me feel better on hard days. It’s always fun to visit Seseame Street, and it’s equally fun to talk about the classic muppets as well!

I’ve seen videos about Sam and Friends. Man..... their characters are CREEPY as weird. Literally. Even the early Grover and Telly Monsters were creepy-ish, although, Telly? I believe his debut was when it was in an episode of Sesame Street, presumably 1979. Grover, though, was always on the show since the first season. I love the older shows and content better than the newer, that’s just me, obviously. Miss Piggy doesn’t seem like any puppet that’d necessarily “scare” for lack of better term, any old people that were actually born in the 70s or whenever she was first introduced. The [underground muppets] were the 2nd creepiest, to me. Sam & Friends is so dang creepy, man. Idk. Just, the sound of the Characters, and sometimes the looks, yes. And, the short sketches of the other creepy shows, were okay. Like, Wilkins and Wonkins, who I can’t watch anymore...
Man, I still care for these muppets. Sam and Friends by far is the absolute MOST creepy in my opinion.
Also, it’s too bad [Snerk and Snurf] are not on SS anymore. Because, idk why. Sesame Street producers just decided.... no. They were most likely too weird and creepy looking to be on the show anymore after the first season.

Oh, the Muppets are still awesome. As a kid, I really liked Grover and Snuffleupagus, besides the better-known Muppets. -- Back in the day, those cartoons and other bits were current styles, not retro. It was funny as an adult seeing some of those old sketches and thinking how much I was involved in, invested in, those as a little guy. Also how much goes over a little kid's head and how much you notice later. They had plenty for the kids to grow into, enough so the older kids would be entertained and learn too, while with their little siblings or cousins or friends, and enough so the adults or teens with them could be entertained along with the little kids.

    I dunno --
I kind of think Disney has mishandled the Muppets brand for years and there are so, so many Muppet shows and TV seasons that are still not available officially on home video. Why is Disney digging in its heels and not releasing these shows?!?
TBH, I never thought they did better with these characters than the first two theatrical Muppet movies and there were problems with the company and projects even before Jim Henson died. I've got the soundtracks to both The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper, the best movie I ever saw Charles Grodin in! (Hahahahahahahaha)
I was pleasantly surprised by The Labyrinth which I had never seen in its entirety before. Surprisingly good film. In some ways, it's easier to take in than The Dark Crystal and it's a fine monument to David Bowie and the height of his career in the 1980s.z
The Dark Crystal series on Netflix(?) I've heard is pretty decent.
Note that Disney had nothing to do with either The Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal -- or the really good Muppets projects.

Though, I get the feeling that Gladys the Cow was Richard having a second stab at the character, and it's probably what we would have expected if he continued the role. We would have had a more mild mannered, older diva that has just the same amount of pride and ego, but not nearly the wild temperament and romanticism.
