Buying your own movie back from a billionaire tyrant for $15 mil, having it be average but not falling flat enough to still pull in $60 mil at the theaters and quadruple your budget investment, I say he did okay.
@@MrWolfSnack That $60M didn't all go to Jim of course, lots of expenses and other people to pay. Is $60M the raw ticket take? Cos then the cinemas have to take their share of that too, and that's no small one. Still I suppose he was the sole rights owner, so he'd make his money back. He probably owned merchandising too, but there weren't so many Dark Crystal lunch boxes about back then. Storybooks and stuff, maybe toys, I dunno, but I doubt it was big money.
Weird how a 1980s children's show has a more nuanced narrative of the human experience than 2020s adult reality

I'm 45, I never knew Fraggle Rock actually had a legit ending until now. This brought a tear to my eye. Thank you for that, I really am glad I found out it did. I was a HUGE fan of this as a kid. I'm so glad they got to finish the show on their own terms :)

I know it sounds insane, but that is a big part why most children's television is the way it is: people trying (and always failing) to make the youth not fall into the same issues of greed, war, and apathy for one's fell man that the generations before dealt with. A noble, if ultimately pointless endeavour. As we have seen though with thawing of cold war issues, improving of the US's relationship with North Korea, etc. a change in media and more importantly time can, in some small way at least, lead to long-term change.

That, is the miracle, and reach of this man.
Well, if you look at it from the Soviet Perspective, I can see how it could like or at least jive with propaganda on their end:
-The only clearly religious character is a con artist
-Taken in combination with the above, the Christmas special may have appeared to be shooting down religion as well, "There is no great bell, it is all a lie." "But there is a great bell at the heart of the rock." "The great bell is [snip]... our bells keep the rock moving, it is our music that keeps the rock alive."
-The whole episode "The Perfect Blue Rollie" can be easily construed as bashing capitalists. Though to be fair their solution would be to have Wimbly seize the means of production =D
-"The Gorg Who Would be King" has a strong focus on egalitarianism, a point both east and west media machines claimed over the other despite hypocrisy both ways, pointing out only the hypocrisy of the other.
- The story involves no clear currency, the Fraggles themselves seem to operate in a way similar to the Federation in Star Trek.
Is such a perspective the actual intention of the artists? Idk, after some reflection as an adult I started to really wonder if the show was intended to be Marxist. I think after watching this that it was not the intention, but appears that way due to a similar mistake in assuming the benevolence of every human being.
The wall fell dur to neglect. The Soviets didn't respond and send more guards to a certain gate and the man in command got so fed up with tue protesters and not having any back up he just opened the gates. And by the time the comanders found 9ut the wall was coming down all over

I am extremely sad that they canceled the new season of dark crystal age of resistance. Since I was a kid I've been fascinated with that world I have the full comic series and their work and dedication with Jim and then carrying his vision into the modern age. It just inspires me to no end. I wish they would reconsider there's so much story to be told.

Ever since I watched the dark crystal as a child I’ve always had questions on certain points in the movie. But of course not much information. Then Netflix started there own spin off to help understand the concept and history for dark crystal BUT WE GOT CUT SO SHORT!!! It’s so in fairrrrr

There is something deeply magical about Jim Henson, and his works. Few humans have ever, or will ever, capture such a pure and wholesome energy of childhood, the way Jim did. He is waiting for us in a place few adults can bear to look, a place where the purity and innocence of childhood stand in stark contrast to our adult world of sins and struggles and tears.

What I love the most about Jim is that as it said:
when he told the production team to build the landscape and world. They did so and he would check in every once in a while but never truly interfered with hard criticism or said *”well maybe it should look less like this and more like this”*
He gave them the time and effort that they needed.
I love how he was a perfectionist, and yet he was so non-demanding and interfering. It’s like he knew he had a knack for hiring incredibly talented people who were always capable of bringing his visions to life exactly as he saw them in his head, so he knew he could trust them.
@@crescentfreshbrethe was also an artist at heart. Plus he said he liked the make the muppets grow organically. So, I’m sure he did the same with others. Like David Goelz, who started in the mullet workshop and then slowly worked his way into part time performer to full time.

Sophia Bogard inequality seems to follow not following social and moral rules. Don’t value education, don’t work, don’t save, spend more than you make on stupid things (mostly entertainment), get addicted to hand outs, get addicted to some form of substance abuse, don’t control sexual urges. After a few years of this, or a few generations, you find yourself unequal with those who follow the rules. You can recognize this, change your choices and improve yourself, but most seem to keep doing what causes their failures and blame those who follow the rules and have success.

Hitmon Chan , the comment was originally that there was inequality in America. I strongly disagree with this. The opportunity for success is there for all. But not everyone succeeds at the same level. On a community level those with broken families (no fathers present), those who don’t control themselves sexually making babies and disease outside of marriage, those who don’t value education, those who don’t value the law, and those who become dependent on handouts, they simply don’t succeed except for the rare exception through sports or entertainment. And that’s usually short lived. It’s based on world view and behavior and until it changes the success rate will not improve. Typically racism is used as an excuse, but then non-whites such as Asians succeed in the US but look at how that community values my list above. On an individual level if I get an art degree and you get an engineering degree, you will tend to be more financially successful than me. But we aren’t guaranteed equal outcomes, only equal opportunity. There are exceptions such as when poor health affects things, but that’s not an inequality issue

A lot of guys gave up so much more than me: marriages, limbs, sanity, their very lives (thank anyone of those guys much as you can, folks). I normally don't mention my service, but did it here to emphasize how even us trained, heartless warfighters can look at Jim Henson trying to make world peace happen through a puppet show and actually believe "He might pull it off and put us all out of work". I'm sitting here in a state of pure awe at just how much of Jim Henson's teachings were woven into the very fabric of my being as I grew up in the 80's and early 90's.
As a someone born in '94, I can safely say Jim Henson's teachings go well beyond that. (Sadly some people have just forgotten.)

Bear in the Big Blue House was made after his death and that's one of the best shows that uses Muppets.

Jim probably didn't get to meet most of his fans. but when ever he made something he made it you and the rest of us in mind. sure it was his creative vision, but he made what he made for everyone.

I just wanted to thank you for your documentation on Fragle Rock. I was in my teens when it was aired in my country back in the 80s. I tryed not to miss an episode. Our one and only tv station at that time was TTT. Trinidad and Tobago Television. It brought back good memories for me. I'm an architect today because of that show. I loved the" dosers."

Building lots of things from spaceships from Star wars, at at Walkers to the x wing & y wing fighters, to scale of the Lego men. Unfortunately it didn't have camera phones back in the 80s, and the different colour lego bricks....

To this day I still love Fraggle Rock! I am in my mid-40s and I can't help but smile & sing along with the theme song!
At one point in time I (50) used the instrumental portion of the theme song as a ringtone. And I'm proud of it too. 😊

The Dark Crystal absolutely blew my mind when I was growing up. At 9yrs old, it gave me bizaare dreams that I still remember now at 33. Only great unique art can do that 🙂♥️
Fraggle Rock is my fondest childhood TV memory. As a 40yo adult, I still watch an episode or two when I find them. The songs make me smile.

Jared Abraham Cid FDA he just wanted to create worlds and explore I don’t think he thought about the work he would have to put in the projects to bring those worlds to life like Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, The Muppet Movies, Fraggle Rock and various specials. Even though he was one of the hardest workers ever on earth. He was always looking for new adventures and opening new doors. He just loved to experiment with ideas just like what he did with The Dark Crystal he had it in mind and wanted to experiment with that.

Jim was one of my true inspirations and I will always love his work. I loved Sesame, Muppets and Fraggle Rock since I was a baby. I’ll never stop loving his work. I never judge Jim’s work

I was born in 2002, and I remember when this show would come on TV when I would get up for school. It was one of my favorites growing up, I grew up being raised by a single mother as my father was in and out of my life, and my mom is/was a fan of the Muppets when I was little. Thank you, Jim. You sure did give us early 2000s kids some fond memories.
There was always something different about Jim's productions. As an adult and watching this that difference is more obvious. He really cared. He really cared about the message he sent people too.

Oh yeah, undeniably! I'm actually very skeptical about the new game because generally tie-in games have been pretty bad overall, but the Netflix series seems to definitely have some money going to it because it looks amazing and I don't doubt at all that they're planning to get as much out of it as they can.

Coincidentally, my mother watched "The Dark Crystal" for the first time ever last week. She didn't even know it existed until she happened to see the thumbnail of the movie and asked me about it. She thought it was about fairies or something, and I was like "Nope, it's darker."
She didn't know Jim Henson made it.

The particularly interesting thing about that line is that he doesn't make a claim of which is true, only what he prefers and the truth is open to interpretation. That was one of the show's strengths: it's nuanced and doesn't talk down to you, in this case, by not handing you answers but instead, offers you questions.

“The Dark Crystal” is one of my all time favorite motion pictures. It’s sad that Jim never lived to see the film being re-evaluated and appreciated more by people nowadays.
I was born march 30 1982. Both of these shows were a huge part of my life. My dad and i loved fragle rock. When he passed away i found a vhs that he had saved for 30 years. So when i think Jim Henson I think of my dad!

These documentary shows are astoundingly good. Incredibly well done! You've taken a creative legend and showcased not just his talents, but his motivations, fears, challenges and passion with such grace and insight. I do hope Defunctland continues producing documentaries of this caliber. Hats off to you folks.

Am I the only one that watched and adored this show my entire life despite not being there at the beginning? This show just brightened up my performance spirit and happiness. This man's shows will remain in my heart forever.
You’re not alone; this show has always been a part of me!! Hell, it more or less raised me, and I wouldn’t be anywhere near the person I am today or even have the close friends that I do if I had never seen it. Fraggle Rock not only shaped me as a person, but it helped me find my own dream of becoming a puppeteer!! 💕
You should combine all of these together to make a documentary movie.

It helps when nothing has topped it ever since. I'm from the '90s, but I've seen a few episodes through VHS tapes of the show.
I had (still have, but haven't touched them in years thanks to having non-working VHS recorders) 4 of Buena Vista's volume tapes (they had a stingy 2 episodes per tape) and 3 HBO Video singles from the '80s (25 minutes a tape).
I'm on the fence about buying that Blu-Ray set to replace all of my aging tapes, as there are episodes that are on there that I don't have but it's far easier than tracking all the season DVD boxes down.

Getting rid of those tapes would be a waste of money. I'd only dispose of them if they didn't function, but I've seen no mould on the tapes yet.

@@1sliiver True. Then again, they were memories of my childhood in a rural area, with only my family's houses nearest to me. There were little city amenities in my neck of the woods as a youngin', save for TV (It was either broadcast where most of the stations had some level of static, or satellite providers with high price tags and bad customer assistance, unless you wanted to make a big dish setup) and phone lines (I had to use that as a tween to get on the internet until 2-way satellite became common).
Rural kids are better than 90s kids in my opinion and I was one of both..
I love trying to explain Fraggle Rock lore to people. They always think I'm making it up. XD Nope, it just runs THAT deep.

Unlike the former 3 who didn't serve in combat (Wealthy Presbyterian minister Mr. Rogers was already well into producing The Children's Corner & eventually what became Mister Rogers' Neighborhood during most of the wars he would've refused to partake in out of principle alone, Jim Henson too never really served as a solider as he was too busy expanding puppetry as a viable art form & even though Walt Disney lied about his age to serve, he never saw battle first-hand, but was instead sort of like on reserve & doing his part under the banner of the Red Cross), Bob Ross did serve in combat & turned to painting to likely help him keep from getting PSTD - like many former military personnel who have gone into war just to come back completely changed due to unsafe paranoia generated from the very real imminent danger posed by the encroaching enemy & physically engaging the threat at a deeply personal level - which allowed him to help others like him, as well as captivate future budding artists (some might have even previously "graduated" from watching Michael Carligo's Pappyland as a junior starting tutorial for very young children using basic drawing techniques), all using relatively simple gestures to create lovely masterpieces of nature's beauty featuring billowing, wispy clouds or charming little trees.

Rewatching this excellent miniseries a second time! The ending of Fraggle Rock's final episodes is one of those few things that NEVER fails to make me tear up. Even seeing those clips of it gets me misty eyed. You really *can't* leave the magic.
I bet a lot of people watching this video are thinking, "Hey, you can't prove Fraggle Rock was responsible for ending the Cold War!" To them, I say, "Can you prove it wasn't?"
It's good that Fraggle Rock was rebooted by Apple TV +. In dark times like this, we need a show like Fraggle Rock now more than ever.

The Dark Crystal was not a failure. It was one of the greatest movies ever made. It just took a while for the world to appreciate it. 200 years from now it will be one of the biggest things Jim Henson will be known for- and Fraggle Rock will be another! Thank you so much for this wonderful video!

As an older person who grew up with the muppet show and fraggle rock, I've genuinely appreciated this.
And let's no forget "The Muppet Show" ended after 5 seasons, and also the demise of ATV, the British distributor of the show which was later became Central TV by early 1982, and the company's founder and producer Lord Grande of both ATV and ITC.

I gotta be honest. This was the episode I was least excited for, as I never watched Fraggle Rock (Unike sesame street and muppets) but this was my favourite episode so far! Great video!
I went to a public showing of "Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas" and "Fraggle Rock Holiday Special," and when the Fraggle Rock theme song played, the whole audience in the auditorium clapped along right after, "Dance your cares away..." fantastic stuff.

The Dark Crystal was an amazing movie. I loved it as a kid and even rewatched it as an adult. I cant even remember the Muppet movie, but i loved Fragle Rock. Shows Jim had great instincts, at least for my tastes.

Can't say I love the story, but Jim Henson always works best with simple stories so he can focus on character and the world. And it is AMAZING!

I have often had a deep fondness for the nostalgia of Defunctland, but this is the first time it brought serious tears to my eyes. The next episode is sure to do so as well. Jim Henson was one of the most influential people in my childhood, probably my life. Thank you for creating such a wonderful remembrance of him, his team, and the great work they undertook during his lifetime.

Fragile Rock is my favorite TV show of all time. Not just favorite show for kids, but favorite show in general. The music, the characters, the humor, the caring, the lessons. It is a perfect storm.

Even though I never actually watched Fraggle Rock as a kid, I find the theme song incredibly nostalgic, as one of my favorite VHS as a kid (although I can’t remember which one now) had an advertisement for what I think was a collection of episodes of Fraggle Rock on VHS. I used to love hearing that song when I would play this VHS, and I can remember being sad that I could never find the show on TV.
Fraggle Rock was my childhood. I watched the series finale the day it aired. I had a bunch of episodes taped on VHS. I had Wembley and Red plushies. I STILL own a metal Fraggle Rock lunchbox.

It used to be on early in the morning on HBO and I'd watch it every day before school. I was about 6 when the show started.
I came up on this show. In fact my lil friends called me “Red” because i wore my hair just like her. I was blown away to learn they shot different interstitials to suit the culture of it’s global audience. Amazing! Grateful for this was a wonderful peek behind the magical curtain. But also appreciate this sweet trip down memory lane. THANK YOU!

I know! When channel's have a one and only staple show that they do, it's usually impossible to make a second series on the same channel that is even decent. But my boy Defunctland just nails it.
I ADORED Fraggle Rock when I was a toddler, to the point that all my parents had to do was sing the theme song by going "Buh duh buh duh buhdududuh, buh duhduhduhDUH!!!" and I would immediately come _running_ into the living room with a little folding plastic director style chair that was my Fraggle Rock chair in tow, plopping it open on the floor in front of the TV, and parking myself in it. I was 3 years old at the time, and now that I'm 36 my parents _still have that little chair_ because it's such a treasured memory for them.

@@afrosheenix It is just that Fraggle Rock had a far nobler purpose for its existence (i.e. its goal was to stop war in order to champion world peace, making it a world peace pet project series for Jim, not to mention existing as one of of the first truly international programs, right alongside the foreign versions of Sesame Street) rather than Sesame Street's multi-racial & inter-species human and Muppet casts teaching rudimentary elementary basics as well as all-inclusive multiculturalism to preschool children (the focus was initially geared towards those kids from low-income, inner city "ghetto" neighborhoods, who were shown in child psychological studies to be behind their peers in terms of their educational levels) or The Muppet Show beginning in 1976 (and its eventual late 90's counterpart Muppets Tonight, made posthumously) existing as Jim's undeterred success in achieving his aim of a prime time Muppet show using the vaudevillian sketch comedy templates of old that originally catered to intelligent, satirical adults moreover than impressionable children to avoid Jim's being pigeon-held as a children's entertainment provider due to the world's ignorance of seeing puppetry as an art strictly just aimed at kids.

Fraggle Rock’s ending is by far the best. It’s for everyone, showing that even when we grow up and we need to make decisions, we can never leave the magic. The fraggles will always be there for us when we need them.
