Proteinaholic: Why Our Obsession with Meat is Killing Us with Garth Davis, M.D.

  • An acclaimed surgeon specializing in weight loss delivers a paradigm-shifting examination of the diet and health industry’s focus on protein, explaining why it is detrimental to our health, and can prevent us from losing weight.
    Whether you are seeing a doctor, nutritionist, or a trainer, all of them advise you to eat more protein. Foods, drinks, and supplements are loaded with extra protein. Many people use protein for weight control, to gain or lose pounds, while others believe it gives them more energy and is essential for a longer, healthier life. Now, Dr. Garth Davis, an expert in weight loss asks, “Is all this protein-making us healthier?”
    The answer, he emphatically argues, is NO. Too much protein is actually making us sick, fat, and tired, according to Dr. Davis. If you are getting adequate calories in your diet, there is no such thing as protein deficiency. The healthiest countries in the world eat far less protein than we do and yet we have an entire nation on a protein binge getting sicker by the day.
    As a surgeon treating obese patients, Dr. Davis was frustrated by the ever-increasing number of sick and overweight patients, but it wasn't until his own health scare that he realized he could do something about it. Combining cutting-edge research, with his hands-on patient experience and his years dedicated to analyzing studies of the world’s longest-lived populations, this explosive, groundbreaking lecture reveals the truth about the dangers of protein and shares a proven approach to weight loss, health, and longevity.

      Yeah true I remember my first three months as vegan when my familiy still ate meat. I'd be so sad or angry all the time. Now they're all pretty much vegan (because I set a good example by becoming super fit and healthy) and I can't imagine it any other way. But I agree it's frustrating still especially if you live in a small conservative town like me where people don't care about social developement. That means you're the only vegan around outside of my family. :-/

      A vegan diet can be as bad as an omnivore one. There are omnivore diets and vegan diets that are healthy and omnivore diets and vegan diets that are unhealthy. The fact that statistically at the population level vegans seem to be doing better than the general population (but no better than pescatarians in terms of health outcomes) may simply be the consequence of vegans being on average more conscious about what they eat than the general population. People who weigh themselves regularly (and therefore, are more conscious about their body weight) also tend to weigh less than those who don't in that same population.

      Zephyr López Cervilla If you enjoy making your intestinal tract a grave yard for dead animals, you will get the same diseases that our society is prone to getting. If you don't want diabetes, obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, Alzheimer's disease, cancer of various types, enlarged fatty liver, kidney disease, brittle bone, ... you give up the "omnivore" idea and understand that your digestion was NEVER MEANT TO EAT MEAT!
      If you eat the diet your body is designed for, but we are EVERY BIT LIKE PLANT EATERS. Did you know that only herbivores have an appendix? We have an intestinal tract just like others of the great apes who are vegetarian.
      There is now vegan substitutes for every thing you think you will feel denied for.
      My dad died of Alzheimer's disease, my maternal grandmother also, and along with my mother all three had Type II Diabetes. My mother and sister died of Breast Cancer. I was pre-diabetic, but brought my blood sugar under control going plant-based. My A1C is 5.1. I am not diabetic at all, I have normal blood pressure and my cholesterol has dropped way down as has my weight.
      I no longer have arthritis at all. My mother, father and grandmother all had that as well as my sister. BUT I NO LONGER EAT LIKE THEM so am no longer sick like them.
      You want the plant-based diet to be "just as bad" because you lack the self-discipline to follow it. My WHOLE FAMILY killed themselves with their knives and forks!
      Is there anyone you are living for? We eat only a small percentage of the day. And we can make the meals we eat delicious without all the oils and dairy and meats, proteins and fish.
      I am five years older than my older sister who died of breast cancer. I have already had 5 more years of life. How much is that worth?!?!?!

    India is also starting to get American food chains in the smaller cities as well as the bigger cities. The so-called "100% pure vegetarian" restaurants of India is losing its consumers slowly. Every time I go back to India, I am fully aware of the changes that happen there. My cousin, his wife, and kid had their wedding anniversary in a McDonald's in Bangalore. At least it was vegetarian. I wish there were more dietary studies done in India. That will bring more strength to the plant-based lifestyle research. I never hear India being mentioned. It is always Okinawa.

    This guy is right point with everything he said. I can personally identify with the need for more protein starting off with the "broscience" thing, eating animal protein and lifting weights. Also, I struggled with the macho meat eating thing. I felt like being vegan was a kind of feminine thing to do and a lot of guys feel this way. I am sure you have heard the "soy boy" referring to vegan males.. Anyway I got over this ignorance and I have been WFPB for a year in a half and I have not looked back. Insightful presentation 🙏 at 54, I’ve had quite a journey with my diet and nutrition. I’ve learnt a lot along the away. Might sound cliched but the best diet is a balanced one and not to deny what you want. If you want chocolate, donughts, cake - eat it but just be aware of your macros. I don’t want to fit into a one way paradigm. I follow a flexitarian diet which is whole food plant based with lots of fruit, vegetables, legumes (beans, lentils), grains, nuts, herbs, seeds. I have a balance between starch, carbohydrates, fibre, fat and protein. I try to limit salt, sugar, oil, saturated fat. I completely limit junk, processed or tinned food. I do intermittent fasting of at least 16-18 hours a day. I don’t eat chicken, meat or eggs, only a little fish now and then. I consume very little dairy. I don’t drink soda - just water, coffee, herbal tea. This is the diet that I believe I will be following for the rest of my life. This approach definitely works for me. I love watching content like this 😊 being flexitarian is better for social occasions 🙏🙏 I use a fitness app to monitor my macros and keep within 1600-2000 calories a day ✅

    I love this presentation and I agree with so much of what Dr. Garth stands for. To be a Doctor that makes his money from doing weight loss surgeries, it takes a lot of guts to stand up and say plant based is far superior to all of these high animal protein diets. My own mother had weight loss surgery back in 2003 by a surgeon in Nashville and while she had great results in the beginning, over time her health has suffered. When you make the stomach smaller, you have that much less opportunity to absorb nutrition. That is just plain an d simple common sense. Her surgeon insisted that she would need lots and lots of protein to stay healthy. Her proteins of choice were cottage cheese, tuna salad and lots of Jiff peanut butter. Presently, her blood test results show that she is borderline malnourished. I can't help but wonder if Dr. Davis has patients that in fact have lost too much weight post surgery and if so, what does he suggest that they eat that is plant based to get back on track? She is also having issues with just not being hungry in general. She has had many tests that show no issues and the doctors she goes to do not try to get to the core of the problem, but rather they just want to give her a pill and put a bandaid on the situation. It is infuriating. Doctors in general need to step up their game and get real with nutrition much like what Dr. Davis is doing.

    I've been tracking my food, as I've done many times in the past. I've recently gone from long-time lacto-veg to totally plant-based. I feel great. I feel light. My protein intake has always been "low" according to standards, 35 to 45 grams per day. I had been eating processed foods to try to get more protein and I got so tired of that, and it was causing me to gain weight. Now the excess weight is just falling off by itself, 1 to 2 pounds per week. I really want to completely stop thinking about protein. I want to know if I just check off everything on Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen that I will get "enough" protein without really thinking about it and counting grams. I'm a tall, fairly sedentary woman. Based on calculators that take minimum protein for average woman at 45 grams, I'm supposed to get a minimum of 54 grams, and I rarely do without eating too much. I've also found my comfortable calorie count to be at 1100. (If I eat much more, it makes me hungry!) Can I stop worrying about calories and protein?

    • @LordOfDhara

      You don't need to worry about either if you're eating a variety of things. If you check of gregors daily dozen there should be more than enough protein and calories.
      That's the cool thing about a whole foods plant based diet is you don't really have to worry about over eating because you will be full before you consume too many calories.

    My very ancient ancestors ate meat; almost exclusively. They ate some fruit when it was around. They ate no grain, and almost no vegetables. This is how I've eaten for my entire life and I'll continue to do so. I'm 70, now with no high blood pressure, no pre-diabetes, I still 'get it up' when my 48 year old wife is in the mood, I am lean and strong, and rarely hungry. My food bill is substantially cheaper than a vegan's bill.
    Meat and fat and a little fruit is the way to long term health. Ask our cavemen ancestors. Veganism isn't a human diet.......but it is a socio-political cause.
    The meat should be grass fed and finished.

    38:30 But in Japan they do eat quite a bit of fish and seafood which should also rise IGF-1, thus leading to a higher incidence of prostate cancer.
    I suspect there are other factors at play such as body weight. The Japanese living in the US may also be more overweight or obese than those living in Japan.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Allan Williams, the (traditional) diet of Okinawa isn't representative of the diet of the entire population of Japan. Therefore, it can't explain the low incidence rate of prostate cancer in the population of Japan. The chart at 38:30 compares the incidence and mortality rates in different countries, among them in Japan, but not specifically in Okinawa.

    I had bad health for 23 years being a meat eater and occurred to me fat was the main issues as i could not treat bad candida (fungal overgrowth) when i had fat in my diet and just fish mainly as i took out chicken and beef and still could not get rid of it. I cut fats and meat out altogether and cooked in water or steamed veg, quinoa and ate mainly veg and salads and managed to get rid of it but candida leads to type 2 diabeties and i have done the spit test on diabeties type 2 sufferers and it's true , they did have it present so yes if meat and fats stopped me getting rid of candida than it probably causes it and which leads to diabeties and also cancer as many good docs have noticed bad candida present in cancer patients so there's more proof!

    I've been vegetarian my whole life; lacto ovo for 2 decades; and plant-based for 2 years; I still have never eaten tofu or other soy products like tempeh unless I was in a Thai restaurant. I think it is cute how new vegetarians try so hard to mimic meat with all their look-alike faux meat. Faux meat disgusts me as much as regular meat. At least they are trying.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tofu and tempeh aren't "faux meat". They 're traditional foods made of soy. I've been non-ovo ~non-lacto non-oil non-salt non-sugar pescatarian for >25 years and I appreciate the taste and nutritional value of those foods. If there's a ridiculous diet that's the fruitarian one (usually heavy on bananas), not because it's raw but because they restrict or eliminate other more nutritious plant foods that can be consumed raw (most greens and other vegetables, seeds, nuts, some tubers, etc.)

    it's a good overall recap of the arguments in favor of the PBD, but I wish he went into the topic of protein needs in more detail like the title of his book suggests. The blue zones ate a lot of legumes; isn't the high plant based protein they took in a contributing factor in their longevity? I'm pretty a heavily plant based eater but I exercise a lot and am not convinced that protein is unimportant for someone with my lifestyle.

    Hong Kong has the highest meat consumption per capita of any city, yet has the highest life expectancy of any city.

    • @muellernikolai8630
      @muellernikolai8630 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      and did you see any studies about fully vegan cities? no, there are no such cities, so you are comparing meat-eating cities with meat-eating cities. Since meat is not a factor then, you should look at other factors like wealth and education. People in Hong-Kong are rich as fuck which tends to make you live longer.

    • @fire7side
      @fire7side 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@muellernikolai8630 The key here is that meat is not a factor. Of that, I completely agree. You need about 4 to 5 servings of vegetables per day, a certain amount of protein, a certain amount of fat from whatever source. Regular exercise. I also consider whole grain and legumes to be a factor in longer life from my research. Processed meats are harmful because of the additives. That pretty much sums up diet and health, although certain vegetables and fruits have anti cancer properties so a focus on them will also help to a degree.

    • @Preservestlandry
      @Preservestlandry 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Causes of death are still #1 cancer, #3 is still heart attacks. It's not like they cured meat related deaths.

    • @fire7side
      @fire7side 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Preservestlandry Veganism is not a cure for either of those. Vegans tend to eat less saturated fat, but they can still get it. They can get too much fat in general. They can eat too many processed foods. You are looking at general studies, not double blinds, which give a skewed picture and a lot of vegan doctors that are pushing it to the limits. They tell you fish has tcp or something, yet in the Seventh Day Adventist study, the people who ate only fish and plant food had a longer lifespan than the vegans, and it all just basically boiled down to body weight. But generally vegans don't get enough protein and point to some bad studies on it. They can get enough if they get enough nuts and seeds, but most don't, and it matters more later in life, so meat eaters tend to do better in that area if they eat lean meat, which they do in the eastern countries like Japan, etc. A cure, no. No diet is a cure for either one.

    Isn't that sad, a handful of people in the audience. I thought if he gives a speach it must be overcrowded. But I see that Dr. Davis has the same problems dealing with non vegans as I have. I am soaking up all those scientific arguments, because it's so difficult to live wfpb in a proteinoholic culture. The health and nutrition expert, a pediatrician, of my boys school is a keto paleo fan and tells everyone to leave the carbs and go for protein to prevent diabetes. Pfff

    • @PheonxD

      I can see almost 22k views here so it's getting some attention. I try not to engage in scientific discussions in a day to day life, cause it turns people off, though I like to know my facts, part of why I've just watched an 1,5h talk :P
      People like simple solutions and changes as little as possible. Keto and paleo are easier and way more catchy than WHPB. We need to make it seem easy (because it is!) by translating science, which is on our side, into human language :P

    • @djg5950
      @djg5950 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't find Keto easier. I tried it for 10 days 18 months ago and couldn't eat enough fat (because I don't like the taste). What made me quit was that they don't allow fruit (mostly berries; which I love) and I've always eaten a lot of fresh fruit. Up to 5 or 6 servings a day. Keto doesn't allow that. I found it hard to find out just what they do want you to eat besides a ton of meat and eggs (coconut oil - yuck !, heavy cream, cheese). I do like cheese but can't live on cheese and meat and eggs. WFPB is so much easier to follow. Just eat mostly vegetables and fruit and whole grains and beans. How hard is that to know exactly what you should have on your plate ?
