    Idk if someone already mentioned this but as of 2023 hobby lobby doesn't do the 40 percent off coupons anymore (which sucks!!!!!!!!) But every two or three weeks they have 40 percent off sales on their modeling and painting stuff so just check their weekly ads for when supplies are on sale. Rip 40% everything coupon, I hope you eventually return like a slasher movies villain....only slashing prices not ppl that is lol

    Fantastic video and job on explaining. My question is sense the medium increases the transperancy while keeping it's properties how is that different from Vallejo thinning medium? The thinning medium as you know doesn't take as long to dry. I also subbed after this! Looking forward to more demos like this

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeffrey Dempster Differences that I have noticed are that glazes seem to have a bit of a longer drying time, increase the flow of the paint which dries to a nice matte finish. While thinner medium tends to dilute your paint and allows the paint no to lose its stickiness nor it’s consistency. There are times when I have used thinner medium with water to help the flow of drying paint pots. However I use glaze medium to create smooth blends on a model personally. I hope this helps, and welcome to the family!

    • @mrbushi1062
      @mrbushi1062 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So in theory could you use thinner to glaze? I don't see why glaze need longer drying time esp used with a wet pallate. Thanks for replying so fast!

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All I can say is experiment and use what works for you. I'll substitute gaze medium for thinner medium and do some more experimenting in my workflow to see which I like better. I'm in constant state of experimenting and discovering, it's why I'm never bored. Yep I always try to get back to questions asked as soon as I can.

    I wanted to use the Matt version of the medium. For my metallic paints. To try to stop or slow the dry ring pooling I am getting. Because my tap water is hard water. And only seems to make my paints especially the metallics worse. And I try it my Vallejo sliver 70.997 paint. And it works great. It's smoother and flows off the brush better. Only thing it makes it hard to dry brush on black. To get a darker worn steel look. Because how with just a small drop of Matt medium the paint covers so easily. I need to improve my technique still. Good buy. Does what I thought it would maybe even better. It may extend the mileage of my paints. Will see in time.

      Matt medium is great! With metallic paint I usually would go with gloss medium to retain the shine of the paint. You are so right, medium in general extends the dry times of paint! Thank you for watching and happy painting!

    Great video, thank you. N00b question - what is the difference between Matt Medium and Glaze medium. For example, I have both Vallejo Matt Medium and Vallejo Glaze Medium, but am unsure when to use one over the other. Help?

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First off, we are all in various stages of N00b so welcome to the family! Okay, so I use Matt Medium to dull the sheen of paint, for example when I paint with ink (which is glossy) I tend to mix Matt Medium with it. Now, I use Glaze Medium when I want to paint in transparent layers.This works very well then I'm pre-shading (setting the gradients before you choose your final color) I thin down the final colors with Glaze Medium making the paint transparent and showing all of my previous under tones. I hope this make sense. Thank you for watching!

    Thanks for this. Eating this stuff up the last month. Vallejo has this verdigris glaze I'll experiment with trying to add that weathered bronze copper look to a big ass 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Nautilus resin sub slowly making it's way across the planes. (April 20% off!) I suppose pastels would be good to look at too. Rust effects will not be heavy just RCGuy's. too much of one look, and the flat areas around the rivets, etc., when brushed or wiped down to remove excess rust effects, seem to go too light. I know, highlights in video pop more than in real life. Welcome to newscaster makeup... Anyway, I want drama. Colors emerging from a much darker palette. Maybe even giving it the illusion that it's underwater and jsut parts of it are being hit by beams of light through kelp. I guess this hyperthink disease, (first model to build in 14 years) is pre-building in your head. Well, better than practicing on the roommate's head while they're sleeping... ah, show biz....

    Great Video, question, can this also be used as a protective layer, like the way varnish works?

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because it’s a medium, the thought is that it is possible. However since it’s blended in with the paint so any thing that will pull up this medium will also pull up the paint it’s mixed with. It’s chemical composition is so that paint molecules do not separate so it’s easy to think that you could use it to protect your paint. However I would stick with varnishes that are designed for that particular purpose.

      @@antoineveron2847 less transparent model colors are pretty challenging to glaze correctly, but even if it comes out glossy, you could always use matte varnish when done painting. Have you tried gel base medium paint? Scale 75 are excellent and I haven’t used glaze medium with them because you can glaze with just water. The reason behind that is the gel keeps the pigment together better than the regular paints. So they can be thinned a lot further without that glossy look.

      Yeah that's right. It's the water pooling to edge. I have bad hard water from my tap in my house. So with many colors like black and sliver paints. I get in a short period of time a dry ring of paint in my dry pallet. That's why I am looking at this video and others for information. I didn't get the gloss medium. I did get the Matt medium. And I like all the improvements seeing in the paint.

    Q: So I use the glaze med and paint, no water ? The med replaces the water ? Also, it says on the bottle to thin paint with 50% med but it seemed a bit thick, is that ok ? use it that way ? or do I continue adding until it’s like dirty paint, almost a wash ? basically like I would with water ? Also, this is only for blending, correct ? or can I use it for layering or is it best to continue using water for layering ?

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I place one drop of Glaze Medium One drop of water and one drop of paint on my wet palette I dip my brush in one of each then I wick the mixture off and see if it's translucent. Depending on the thickness of the paint you may need more medium and water dips until I see the paint to the consistency I want it. So it's dependent on the paint, brand, color, temperature of the room, the humidity of your workspace, there really is no hard fast ratio rule. I play with the constancy on a practice model sometimes if I'm unsure, but with practice you will get what's right for you. I generally use this medium for glazing, I use slow dry for wet blending, thinner for changing the consistency/thickness of the paint and, flow aide for edge hi lighting. I generally do not use layering for painting, I slowly glaze and/or wet blend to create smooth transitions, but that's my personal taste. I hope this helps.
