  • Far from the Madding Crowd (2015)
    Dir. Thomas Vinterberg
Come all you fair and tender girls
    That flourish in your prime
    Beware, beware
    Keep your garden fair
Let no man steal your thyme,
Let no man steal your thyme.
For when your thyme it is past and gone
He'll care no more for you
And every place where your thyme was waste
Will all spread o'er with rue,
Will all spread o'er with rue.
The gardener's son was standing by
Three flowers he gave to me
The pink, the blue, and the violet true
And the red, red rosy tree,
And the red, red rosy tree.
But I refused the red rose bush
    And gained the willow tree
That all the world may plainly see
    How my love slighted me,
    How my love slighted me.

For this clip I muted the original sound and synced it up with the soundtrack version of the song in order to give it a clearer "music video" quality, so without any of the background sounds present in the film. I hope people like it, but if not, there are obviously other clips on TH-cam which keep the original "diegetic" sound, :)

The song is sung so beautifully with such an angelic voice in such a romantic and touching scene. I have watched this scene for more than ten times, and i am still touched and not tired of it. I am obsessed with it. Thank the director and the singer (who is the real singer ? Mulligan herself ?).
    I believe the thyme implies women'S virginity/virtues.

Why do you think Gabriel looks on with concern as Bathsheba and Boldwood sing together?

    • @BeanUasal
      @BeanUasal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

I think it's Boldwood's obvious and increasing infatuation with Bathsheba that is unsettling to Gabriel and although he loves her himself, I don't think it's jealousy he feels; he's more concerned about the possibility of things ending badly and feelings being hurt because he knows Bathsheba doesn't reciprocate Boldwood's feelings. This moment of intimacy between them as they sing together can only strengthen Boldwood's passion, so she is on dangerous ground if she wants to discourage him. She is ever the gracious hostess, but - as Gabriel said to her in an earlier scene - it would be unworthy of her to lead Boldwood on, so all he can do is stand by and trust she will ultimately set things right.

Thyme represented a metaphor for a woman’s vitality, empowerment and independence back when the poem was written. Thyme translates from Greek to “courage”. It was a herb that was always relied upon to grow in wet climates so poor peasants across Ireland and Britain could always rely on it appearing. Back then people took what they could from the land to survive, especially with the Irish peasant not even owning their own land due to domination from the crown: With this in mind , the Thyme was a reliable herb that everyone had. Irish peasant girls used to leave thyme on the walls beside working young men they fancied, as a sign “I want to be courted”. I think immigrants carried the tradition over to England so they started doing it there aswell. The thyme in this song/poem represents a woman’s independence and heart of courage giving it to the man in the first place, and the song is warning to young girls not to give away their hearts so easily. Back then people’s reputations were everything , social standing influenced marriage prospects and how successful marriages went down could mean the difference between your family having a full or empty belly the following winter. This song is a warning to always keep your guard up and not to fall for the wrong person . I wish people still though that way these days it’s so beautiful

Carey does a good job on this, but she doesn't have the innocence of Jacqui McShee.
