    Great to see your bass player finally make an appearance! I love the Katana for guitar so might be tempted by this for bass some day. For now, I’m very happy practising bass at home through headphones (or very low volumes) using my Katana 100. Already sounds good enough to my ears and I can record direct out from it.

    Just to clarify a point you made regarding the external speaker out. It's either or.....if you plug an external speaker in, it disables the internal speaker(s). Their thinking with only 160 watts is they want you to get the whole 160 watts into whatever speaker enclosure you use...whether it be the internal or an external cab.

    For years I used a Roland Cube bass for practice and I liked the idea of having multiple amps and some FX at the típ of my fingers. This Katana concept seems to expand the idea but IME, the more bells and whistles,the more fiddling with the knobs and buttons instead of playing..that's the reason I sold the Roland and got a Hartke combo for practice at home. Plug and play. That's it.
    I use some FX on bass but I like to tweak them on the fly with their respective knobs instead on touching a screen or using a computer mouse.
    Anyways, it's a Boss product, that means that it's good 👍.

    Seems like a nice piece of kit, but it's still a bit hard to tell how it really sounds from listening to a TH-cam video, despite the fact that I am using a pair of high quality studio monitors. I would love to hear it live in my room compared to my Hartke 3500 2 x 10 combo. The Hartke obviously has less features as it is over 20 years old, but it does kick some ass. Also, I question how relevant it really is to have all of those effects on a bass amp. I admit that I am probably a bit old fashioned here, but other than a bit of grit, I like my bass tones mostly pure in the mix.

    • @bretspencer
      @bretspencer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think James covered this well starting at about 7:40. It's not designed to appeal to everyone. It's designed to be a practical solution for gigging, practicing and recording. The Hartke 3500 weighs 106lbs (48kg). Who wants to drag that around to gigs, rehearsals, studios, etc? I feel the same way about the Katana for guitar. As much as I love a Fender Twin or Super Deluxe, they are super heavy, and super loud which makes them super impractical. The Katana gets me close enough for far less money and without the need for back surgery.

    • @bsbrooks455
      @bsbrooks455 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bretspencer Actually, I totally agree with you. I don't gig anymore and I was just wondering how the sound would compare in a live setting. When I got the Hartke, yes it was heavy, but that was actually a down sizing for me at the time. The Hartke replaced an Ampeg SVT with a pair of 8 x 10 cabs. Talk about heavy, huh. In all fairness though, back then I was gigging full time and we had the pleasure of having roadies to do the grunt work. I play mostly guitar now and I am fully satisfied with my Katana MKII 1 x 12 and a Nux MG30. I'm 69 and couldn't imagine lugging around heavy amps anymore.

    I really like my Katana MK2 100 watt but it isn't loud enough. I use it strictly in my studio, and it is way awesome for that! I play in a loud old-school hard rock band. Our drummer doesn't tippy tap...he is loud! I think I'd prefer this bass amp to be in head form so I could use it in the studio and choose different speakers to play it through. 160 a/b watts is ok for rehearsal or home practice but frankly, it's just not enough headroom for a loud band. It should be kicking at the very least 300 solid-state watts for bass and 200 solid-state watts for the guitar. It starts running out of headroom and getting power amp distortion at about 60% on the master and to my ears, it starts sounding very thin and harsh at that point (odd-order harmonic distortion). As a guitar player, I'll continue to use my 100-watt Dual Rec half stack for live shows. As a bass player, I'm using a Trace Elliot Elf as a pre into a 2000 watt class D power amp driving 210's, a tweeter and a 15. As a drummer...please bring something loud enough that I can hear AND feel. Headphones make me feel very disconnected from the band so unless it is for recording...not gonna use headphones or IEM's. Some of us still like to "feel" it, loud and old school. All that being said, the Katana series is really nice and sounds fantastic. At home, my Mesa collects dust. The Katana is my goto for practice and recording. Peace, love, dove fellas!

It's been 2 years since the Katana mkII came out, and the Catalyst has come out since and is getting a fair bit of attention. How long do you reckon it will be before the Katana mkIII come out, with the Bluetooth module option and (hopefully) improved stereo support?

    I own a katana 210 and it CONSUMES 117 watts. So this COMPLETE AND UTTER BULLSHIT of 160 w rms is a Straight up lie STOP £UCKING LYING!
    It would push 60w rms @ best. This works because the 2 10 inch speakers are unusually efficient with low mass cones & big ass ceramic magnets
    BUT............ Despite this it sounds pretty bloody good. I bought the damn thing
    after all. And it won out against ALL contenders @ the price point available to me in Aust. The choice in the end was down to the Ampeg Rocket 115 & the Katana. The ampeg being the ONLY rocket range combo I liked the sound of yes, including the 210. I believe this is due to the Eminence designed 15 that is remarkably very nice @ the price. But the katana simply has a richer palette to create YOUR sound with
    & why it won out in the end for me

      Unless you’re in the room Al how are you expecting for us to demonstrate for you to hear this amp? Maybe a mic in front of it? Where would you like the mic in relation to the speaker? You would say it’s coloured by the mic and preamp and also not the sound in the room, the fact that 90% of bass amps have a Di is because that is the best way to amplify the bass amp in a large live gig situation. I’m sure You see my point.
