    Everybody has some great ideas on what I should do with this car! The plan for right now is to make it a comfortable and mechanically sound daily driver. I would like to keep the look stock and the ride comfortable, while adding power. I love the stock ride and easy feel of driving this thing, it just needs more power.. Alot more. So pretty much a sleeper/cruiser thirdgen.

      The rattle seems like it might be the plate you have on the dash, try pulling it quick. Had a problem with the gauge fuse blowing from an aftermarket head unit jumper on the memory wire and it looks like you have one, so look there. It is probably the cable, but it could be a sheared plastic gear in the trans tail shaft, and you can diagnose it pretty quick with a pair of pliers, a drill, and a spotter. If you spin it up and it moves? A 10mm and a little bit of work will get you done easier than the cable. They are color coded but are usually discolored brown/orange, so you might have to just go by your rear end ratio. Hope this helps. Can't wait to see what you turn it into.

      @Cbze 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the rattle sounds and looks like the license plate near the window. In california u have to have a front plate and mine rattled until I taped it. It also sounds like the typical door handle rattle, either the rods that connect to the handle or the handle bracket behind the panel.

      I think you should do an ls swap, suspension and definitely sub frame connectors if it doesn’t already have since it’s T tops. Take us step by step on ls swap.

    putting speed parts on an LG4 is roughly equivalent to setting cash on fire. I would propose setting up a budget Turbo system. That way you can find the limits of the LG4 and once it blows up, you're already prepped for the LS

    • @laiky71
      @laiky71 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      An lg4 will never be collectable. It's a handicapped motor. Low compression, small bore, shrouded valves, crap ports. The only way to get power out of it, is forced induction, or replacing it. No amount of "bolt on parts" will make it any more powerful than a 10 year old 6 cylinder sedan.

    • @laiky71
      @laiky71 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's insane, but I totally get what you're saying. I have an 84 z28 that WAS an lg4. It's a 383 now. I also have my brothers bought new 84 Z28 H.O. she's tired and battle scarred but was an order of magnitude better than my lg4. I grew up in that car, best times of my life were sitting next to my brother at triple digit speeds on the SS parkway. First time going over 100 was in that car. I think I was 16 or 17.

    • @ad356
      @ad356 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @CC Ryder selling a LG4 engine for $12,000-$14,000 or the whole car? either way that engine was a turd. think it was 150 hp. i used to have a 1989 camaro with the L03. i pulled that junk out and put a L05 in its place.... then L98 heads, better cam, headers, bored throttle body..... yeah it work up some, it was fairly quick, but i had to spend enough to get it there..... and still it probably made 250-260 (tops). it was fun though, the TBI system isnt a complete turd when you set the rest of the engine up right.

      Motor Trend`s Engine Masters TH-cam channel ran a junkyard 305 with a mild cam, carb and head swap and a 150 NOS shot and made over 500HP, they didn't blow it up until they hit it with a 300 shot, then it only damaged one piston.

    Oh fuck yes. I've had my 1986 Trans Am since I was 16 and I've ditched the 305 TPI and 700R4 for a built Vortec L31 and World Class T5. I'm almost done with the swap and the beast runs. Soon enough I'll have it back on the road. I have a few older vids on my channel about me doing the first engine swap and some rust repair, etc. Plan to come out with a huge update when the new swap is done. I love seeing people mess with these cars.

    You should put a 427 sbc with holley fuel injection. Make it look stock, paint the block black, the heads and intake black and find a H.O. 305 dual snorkel intake for the ultimate sleeper vibe. That would be sick. Sweet ride man.

    Hey Matt, love the new ride! I would like to see you keep the 305 and build it up. The 305s are great little motors and they don't get the respect they deserve. It would be nice to see a 305 stroked out to a 335 with ARP bolts and some covette heads, and a nice power giving cam, and also supercharge it. It would be a surprise to everyone.

  • @KatyBauer1

    My grandmother had a 1980 Firebird Esprit, I was born in 1987, so I don't remember it new, but she barely drove it and kept it in mint condition. It was garaged it's entire life, and my dad sold it in 2010, with about 50k miles on it, for some ridiculous amount of money to a collector. He did an online auction and he ended up getting like over 3 times what it originally sold for. My grandmother passed away in 1995 and she stopped driving in 1990, so my dad would drive it once a week to keep it running and keep the tires from getting flat spots. I honestly don't know why he kept it as long as he did, except sentimental reasons, apparently my grandmother absolutely loved that car.

    I have the same year TA since I bought it back in 1993. It had the L69 305 stock and I put in a GM 350/350 for around $2400. I put on a new quadrajet carb and Edelbrock headers and a few other small mods. It ran and sounded absolutely perfect. Nice deep throaty swap and rumble, the 700R4 still kept with the new engine and it got great mileage too. I had it painted over and put on new wheels-I won street shows with it and I kept it immaculate for a daily driver for many years. Fast forward-I swapped out the engine and put in a high performace 383/449 hp stroker and it has alot of power but never felt the same as it did with the 350/350. She still sits in my garage but I think that I am going to put another 350 in it. It was an easy swap and ran beautifully with 200 more horses than the stock 305. Good luck man its in nice shape.

    I used to have an 89 GTA, I loved that car, thought the shape was great (much nicer than the earlier KITT type), I spent a fortune sorting all the bits out, new engine, bushes, shocks, exhaust, brakes, subframe connectors, weather strips, stereo and more. But I always had problems with it so it was always having a new problem to sort out and I didn't have the time or the money to keep on top so let it go. Still wish I'd stuck with it and stripped it all down and restored it fully. Maybe one day :) Looking forward to watching where this one goes, will bring back memories for sure!

    I really think you should leave the 305 in there for now and build the car from.the rear front. I.e start with suspension stuff wheels etc. It would be cool to set the goal as a daily driver that can break into the 12s. Maybe try to get high 12s with the 305. That way once you get bored of the 305 and want to do a swap the platform will already be set.

    Nice project car. You made a great purchase. The car really looks in pretty good shape. I also love the 3rd gen Camaro and Firebird. I own a 1982 Pontiac Trans Am and it used to look like yours with the same ground effects and bumpers. It was done by its previous owner but I removed them and put the stock parts back on the car. It also had the same Walker mufflers and tail pipes which aren't factory correct but aftermarket. The catalytic converter was also replaced with a Walker aftermarket one. The factory tailpipes on our car had a slightly different shape with a slant cut on the tips. The tailpipes were welded on the muffler from factory.

I sold my 87 Iroc last summer needed a bit too much work and didn't have the space to work on cars as before..but growing up with 3rd gens and just love them I may consider buying one in better shape. This TA is in better shape than the Iroc I had sold because of the no rust issues but it had similar issues like no head liner and tops and door seals and the rear hatch pull down issue just some of the common issues with these 3rd gens. Congrates and looking foward to this TA build..that was a steal of a deal BTW Matt!! 😎

    I've contemplated swapping a 5.3 into my 89 bird, but then I started learning more about small blocks, specifically the chevy 400. I found that it's relatively cheap, easy to build, easy to get go fast parts, and can have immense torque with the right compression ratio. I think that would be a very fun build, I also wanted to find a fi tech to convert the 400 to efi for ease of tuning and better power.

    I’m looking to get a 3rd Gen TA like yours in that particular color with the silver bottom sometime in the future. I was in my teens/early twenties when these cars were popular but couldn’t afford it.
    I’ll be watching and following the progress of your TA. BTW I saw that you were on Rt 287 / Rt 440 in Jersey. I used to live in S.I., NY.

    If it at least had the slightly higher horsepower tuned port engine in it then id maybe tinker with some parts but with that engine you'd be throwing cash away . I think a high revving 4.8 with a single turbo would be real nice in there . I don't think youd get a factory supercharger under the hood of that thing . Pretty limited on hood clearance unless you were to opt for cowl hood , but i'd rather see stock hood on these cars , great body lines for its era...

    I'm so extremely excited about this series. I just bought a 1986 Z28 which already had a 350 swap done to it and it has many of the same problems this car has. In a sense, we're going to go through this revival together.
    I'd also like to add that I wouldn't want to see and LS swap in this car. Your channel is more or less built on the fact that you have an LS swapped Camaro and I understand that, but I think doing something like a 350 swap would add some diversity and also interest myself more. Handling upgrades plus an old style Gen I 350 would be the best route in my opinion, but I'm not your only subscriber and it is your car. :)

    Matt you're known for LS swap. I was it like an old school 454, or 343 small block, with 2 speed power glide. I think there's is a LS block that working with 350 parts. Cant wait to see what you go with.

    I have an almost identical car (same color and missing fog light lense) sitting in my brother's driveway. We bought it for $200 with a bent tie rod after our friend put it into a ditch. Fixed it and used it as kind of a community burnout machine. With a stock TPI 5.0 and the headlight pulled it was faster than my '97 Cobra in the 1/4 (14.0 to a 14.1). It is now a little bit mossy from sitting with a blown trans and I've been trying to get the ball rolling on it again. Sweet ride though Matt. Dare you to do the Aquatune Hydrogen Injection system on it.

    I also have a 85 trans am off Facebook 😂 luckily my car was hot rodded with a vortec 350 and big cam making 400ish hp. 5 speed car with a 305 originally. T tops and it's completely rust free from a no snow area. Other then needing new rubber weatherstripping around the doors n t tops it's in beautiful shape.

    Yes!! Another 3rd gen owner! You have the same perspective as me it seems, I want to do the same thing with my 305. I've had two Trans Ams and a Camaro - they're loads of fun.
    See what power you can make from the 305! A turbo build, or perhaps just throwing bolt-ons at it would be neat. I'm shooting for an Autocross build with mine, so I really want to dial in the platform and make the car handle well.

Throw a blower on it if you want even more HP and If not go all out and do what you do. I have a 86 Iroc z had two 84 Z28s and 1 83 great to see the spirit is still alive. Nice Buy Good Luck with it!

    Great find on the Trans Am, $1500 is steal considering it runs and drives with out rust and straight body. Fender is an easy fix. I got a 91 Firebird for $800, it has a LT 1 with aluminum heads. No rust at all Florida car. 3rd gen f-bodies are a good choice, plentiful and inexpensive. Easy to modify, in stock form they brake and handle very well. Look forward to more videos. 👍

    This was my first car except mine had the LB9 305 TPI. LB9s had 190 bhp in 1986 and LG4 had 155 bhp. Both were dead and buried by 4500 rpm even though the redline was 5500. That last 1000 rpm of noise was what lost you races to Monte SS and some of the slower Mustangs. I eventually learned to let off the gas and stomp it again to "trick" the trans into shifting early. I always dreamed of a 454 or 383 stroker that could breath. Highway performance was non-existent because of the asthmatic top end. I bought exhaust (Flowmaster) and bogus computer chips (SLP) and TPI inserts and none of them made much difference. I wished the LS or something like it was available in those days. The 3rd gen TA was a beautiful car, just poorly built like most of it's 80's GM brethren. However, it did have character and I still miss it. Whatever you do, you will want to add strut tower braces (front and rear) and maybe add a partial roll cage. My T-top car sqeaked and rattled like crazy once it had some miles and lossened up. I will never forget the time I visited an old girl friend at Ohio U and had the car parked curbside on a cobblestone street. A few co-eds were admiring the car as I pulled out, but the cobble stones were not my friend and the sqeaking and rattling was all anyone could hear as the car betrayed it's loosened structure, the sqeaks and rattles reverberated from the walls as I made a (slightly) hasty escape.

    Whatever you do to this car I'm sure will be amazing. Im glad you are sticking with keeping it automatic. The trans ams from my understanding was more of a touring car than the camaros of the same gen and so i think keeping it automatic cements that idea. Looking forward to seeing future vids as I hope i can learn something for restoring my 88 GTA.
    Also. I am really digging the 80's vibe you got going with this video please keep it up in the future build videos👍

      Typically they got more aggressive suspension tuning then the Camaro (stiffer rear parts making it handle more neutral/not understeer as much) as well as got nicer interior trim. Pontiac wanted to be GM's performance division and they kept fighting with GM's edict that the Corvette is GM's ultimate sports car (though a good argument could be made that Pontiac broke that rule with the TTA and Firehawk, both could run away and hide from anything else GM made)

    I have a stock 305 TPI in my 85 Camaro. I am having a difficult time between having a stock looking original or doing a LS swap. The problem is putting that much money into a 305 I could do a nice LS or just a small block swap. But I love the way the tune port intake looks. If you do either I’ll still watch your videos! My dash pad is equally uncracked. But as far as I know my car has always been garaged as it is now. With T tops you will have to put is a subframe connector.

    • @ad356
      @ad356 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      a small block swap?? you do realize a 305 is a small block? you could do heads, cam, intake, and exhaust and wake it up just a little. a 305 is good for some gains, you should be able to get close to 300 hp.
      if your talking about a 350 swap, that is a direct swap, but realize the stock runners and intake on a TPI system actually become a restriction. the TPI system was originally intended to give 350 torque numbers to a 305. the runners and intake are sized for a 305.

      I’ve read so many articles on ls swaps, the pro and con of the 305. I’ve watch every video on ls swaps, thanks Matt, to different ecm options to allow me to keep the tpi and up grade the cam. I’d like to keep it as stock looking as possible and get some kind of hp out of it. I’ve read it’s possible but you either need to upgrade the ecm yo a 86 or later and learn to program proms plus buy all the equipment to program them. Or get a stand alone ecm, which No one is giving up information on how to do it. Or scrap the tpi and go with a carb. But the car is a first gen fuel injection from the first year they put the tpi on a Camaro. So staying true to the multi port injection I could do a Holley Stealth ram. But now I’m going so far away from the original why not just put a 350 into it or just do a ls swap. Most people say way waste money on a 305. Do you see my dilemma? Here is my latest idea.
      www.superchevy.com/how-to/engines-drivetrain/1801-a-305ci-engine-makes-big-horsepower-using-torqstorm-supercharger/.
      Yes it say supercharger but the first part talks about what was done prior to the supercharger.
      But I’m really stuck on the way that TPI looks plus the originality of the car.
      And yes I do know a 305 is a small block Chevy.

    • @monavieforal
      @monavieforal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok I don’t think you realize that 1985 was the first year of the TPI. In 1986 they change the ecu and wiring harness but essentially used the same hardware. So any chips/proms that are available only work in 1986 and later ecu’s. This is why I say an ecu swap.
      If you have some real information that would help me with my project, thank you.

    I think before you ls swap it, or touch a bit or bolt on it, you should take it to track, and dunk as is for baseline numbers!
    Myself personally, I’d like to see you put a set of aluminum heads on it (350 heads for that motor!), swap it over to too, put a cam in it, and see what kind of power you can get out of that old 305! I know from personal experience, those 305’s are capable of making decent power, a lot more than factory and the bad name they have is undeserved!
    Maybe after that, try some old school alp Siamese you runners, big mouth set up, or if you can find one a TPIS “mini ram” that was the precursor to the factory intake they put on the Lt1 in the first years of the 4th gen fbodys.
    After that, maybe an ls swap

    Sweet!
    I however guessed a little wrong. I thought it was going to be a Formula Firebird.
    I had a 1990 Red Trans Am with the 305ci TPI motor and hunk 700R4 Automatic transmission in it.
    It was my first V-8 muscle or pony car, and man I loved that car! I would give almost anything to have that exact same car back!
    I’ve tried looking up the vin number to see if I could find her, but have never been able to. I afraid it was junked😔
    I do want to buy another one of the same year and build it the way I always wanted to build the other one, as a canyon carver that I could take out on track days at SCCA tracks and corner with the best of them with factory style suspension and prove that it was a great design and worked great for cornering!

    Voice over is great. The no cracks in the dash pad is insane, it doesn't make sense. I'm glad u have t tops, now u will show how to fix them up and I am deffinitely looking forward to that. As far as the 305 being a terrible le compression engine, the 305 was known as the work horse of chevrolet, it wasn't ment for power it was ment for reliability. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of power you can get out of the 305 and what steps you will take. I wish it was tbi, so it would help me more haha I have a tbi not a carb. Similar but diff, no mixture screws etc.
    Also, if u ever do a video on the rear beqrings for the wheels, I'd be interested in seeing that. It's funny how the lug nuts look so random!
