I feel like the animators wanted him to have that unsettling effect. And they did such a good job with it. His whole character is just a piece of work!
What makes him so unique is that he barely takes up any screen time, but when he’s on, literally nothing else matters. Everyone wants the star, not Death, he doesn’t care about that. He just wants your soul. And sometimes you’re not even sure if he’s actually there or if its just your fear playing tricks on you.

In this scene when the glass cracks it cracks in the shape of a wolf skull. Also in the scene where Death whistles and puss turns away from the battle to see him standing there, the composition of the frame forms a skull. Lots of symbolism around this character it’s super cool.
I see the wolf as a representation of a relentless predator because he never stops hunting puss. He is always stalking. His cloak with sickles (A reference to the scythe normally used by the reaper) and his speed mix in a way to show puss and us that no matter how fast we or puss are. Death will always be faster and inevitable. Just as if you tried to outrun a wolf.
Death is a shape-shifting being who actually was a real myth in a town where people heard whistles at night and they would lock themselves in their house, and they said to have seen a wolf being who whistles and whenever they hear the whistles a live has been taken or is about to

Dude is in the film for like 15 mins approx, absolutely incredible presence. The lines, the delivery, the VA (Wagner Moura was badass), the design and Art. Everything makes Death/The Wolf perfect. Great villain up there with Gary Oldman as Shen.
No friend, it's the fact that there's not much of him that left the best impression on the viewers. If there'd been more of him, the impression would be lessened. We wouldn't fear him.

Bro, this guy was such a great antagonist. Amazing design and presence, left such a MAJOR impact on the movie from the very second he shows up, and always gets right to the point. I also love how the movie keeps dropping subtle hints about this before the big reveal like how he appears next to Puss in the bar out of literally nowhere.
There are also subtler cues like the number 8 appearing in various forms: eight tally marks, the bell ringing eight times, Puss drinking eight glasses of milk, the bar having eight unlit candles in its chandelier, etc.

Love how they make him more than a creature, but a powerful entity. Seeing the other characters pass through the wishing star barrier and get magically popped, then seeing him walk right through like nothing was truly awesome, and showed in some way he is more powerful than a world altering wish.
I mean, The Grim Reaper or an embodiment of Death has existed in most cultures regardless of the Horsemen. Pretty sure an example like Thanatos predates Revelations.

He isn't a villain tho, He's just doing his job. He only went after puss because he didn't value his lives. Once puss starts to value his own life(the last one he has), Death straight up leaves. He tells him to live his life and that they'll meet again. 10 out of 10 antagonist but definitely not a villain.(the two words are not synonymous btw)
@@erfanthered9801Not really, he WAS still kind of a villain, albeit an anti villain. He wasn't just doing his job by going after Puss, if he was, he'd have just waited for him to waste his last life. He was chasing after a personal grudge because he was pissed with how little Puss valued his lives. An understandable motivation, and he did have the courtesy to give up and leave when Puss learned his lesson instead of finishing his grudge, but he was still trying to kill someone before their time for personal reasons.
I feel like him talking is better because if he didn't, we wouldn't get a lot. Like don't get me wrong, love silent imagery and storytelling, but i feel like this Death is too active to be just silent. Like he had too much to say to be silent, especially for Puss. Maybe if the scenes were changed a little, maybe but dialogue feels too involved...
It would very bad. There would be no motivation, no reveal, a poor introduction and a horrible climax. Plus, the introduction is also made to be scary. Even so, maybe no dialogue would be scarier but puss' whole arc would be gone aswell, and without his arc the movie wouldn't be anything, really. It would be a shallow villain that would be good for individual scenes and the only way he could drive the plot is probably by killing people. This is good for henchmen or horror villains, like darth maul and jason vorhees, but for a main villain i personally prefer someone with motivation and the ability to have a conversation with the protagonist. And you can very well use the text to be scary, like when he says "pick it up" or when talks down on puss in boots, making him feel powerless. That's what i think, at least

The intro segment is probably the section of the original song at 2:30 with the vocals removed (probably from an instrumental track online or using an AI vocal removal tool), it then fades into the sort of dreamy guitar riff just before the drop, putting in the lyric "return to me" which is at 3:21 in the original song, which is then spliced into the the song's second chorus at 1:10 since the guitar riff I mentioned before doesn't lead into that drop. If you listen closely you can also hear a bunch of artifacting from the vocal removal in the intro instrumental. Basically, there is no "original" longer version of this edit as far as I can tell (trust me, I looked), but if the creator of the short wants to pop in and say where he got the audio if he didn't make it, that's down to him. It’s hard to believe a character this badass and intimidating exists in the same universe as Shrek.
That was the coldest line I’ve ever heard in a Dreamworks movie, and it’s not even close.

This is one of the few animated villains that legit actually sent chills down my spine 😅😅😅
Technically it was Jack but really death was the villain for puss in boots alone. But he really was one of the best characters even if he was just in shadows. The whistle and all was perfect

Love how they make him more than a creature, but a powerful entity. Seeing the other characters pass through the wishing star barrier and get magically popped, then seeing him walk right through like nothing was truly awesome, and showed in some way he is more powerful than a world altering wish.
That's what I like most. While all the other rivals puss can best. Death only relents when "puss in boots dies" and puss is reborn a better man.
And the detail that they didn’t put him on the map of the dark forest further implying he was more than a creature was a nice touch

You can see that the cracks in the crystal form a wolf skull around his face before shattering. This movie went fucking HARD. Especially with the anxiety attack scene

No, now he's going to make a theory discussing how HE ISNT DEATH and that he was lying. I can almost guarantee this. I will give it a few weeks but I am willing to bet that matpat will try to debunk it being death for some reason despite him literally owning up to it and being proud of it.

He isn't a villain tho, He's just doing his job. He only went after puss because he didn't value his lives. Once puss starts to value his own life(the last one he has), Death straight up leaves. He tells him to live his life and that they'll meet again.

@@erfanthered9801Not really, he WAS still kind of a villain, albeit an anti villain. He wasn't just doing his job by going after Puss, if he was, he'd have just waited for him to waste his last life. He was chasing after a personal grudge because he was pissed with how little Puss valued his lives. An understandable motivation, and he did have the courtesy to give up and leave when Puss learned his lesson instead of finishing his grudge, but he was still trying to kill someone before their time for personal reasons.

I feel like him talking is better because if he didn't, we wouldn't get a lot. Like don't get me wrong, love silent imagery and storytelling, but i feel like this Death is too active to be just silent. Like he had too much to say to be silent, especially for Puss. Maybe if the scenes were changed a little, maybe but dialogue feels too involved...
It would very bad. There would be no motivation, no reveal, a poor introduction and a horrible climax. Plus, the introduction is also made to be scary. Even so, maybe no dialogue would be scarier but puss' whole arc would be gone aswell, and without his arc the movie wouldn't be anything, really. It would be a shallow villain that would be good for individual scenes and the only way he could drive the plot is probably by killing people. This is good for henchmen or horror villains, like darth maul and jason vorhees, but for a main villain i personally prefer someone with motivation and the ability to have a conversation with the protagonist. And you can very well use the text to be scary, like when he says "pick it up" or when talks down on puss in boots, making him feel powerless. That's what i think, at least

@@nekozimo Bruh, it's literally the same song, it was just cut to absolute pieces for this video. The intro segment is probably the section of the original song at 2:30 with the vocals removed (probably from an instrumental track online or using an AI vocal removal tool), it then fades into the sort of dreamy guitar riff just before the drop, putting in the lyric "return to me" which is at 3:21 in the original song, which is then spliced into the the song's second chorus at 1:10 since the guitar riff I mentioned before doesn't lead into that drop. If you listen closely you can also hear a bunch of artifacting from the vocal removal in the intro instrumental. Basically, there is no "original" longer version of this edit as far as I can tell (trust me, I looked), but if the creator of the short wants to pop in and say where he got the audio if he didn't make it, that's down to him.
Edit: On second inspection, I did manage to find an edited version that doesn't include the intro instrumental, but otherwise, this is the closest thing to the audio in the video.

By an incredibly long shot, hands down, the best character to come out of modern dreamworks.
The tai lung only appears 10:11 into the Kung Fu panda film and the film is one hour and 32 minutes long. And it only appears in tense moments, in the same way as the wolf
