  • Sam Harris speaks with Mustafa Suleyman about his new book, “The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the 21st Century’s Greatest Dilemma.” They discuss the progress in artificial intelligence made at his company DeepMind, the acquisition of DeepMind by Google, Atari DQN, AlphaGo, AlphaZero, AlphaFold, the invention of new knowledge, the risks of our making progress in AI, “superintelligence” as a distraction from more pressing problems, the inevitable spread of general-purpose technology, the nature of intelligence, productivity growth and labor disruptions, “the containment problem,” the importance of scale, Moore’s law, Inflection AI, open-source LLMs, changing the norms of work and leisure, the redistribution of value, introducing friction into the deployment of AI, regulatory capture, a misinformation apocalypse, digital watermarks, asymmetric threats, conflict and cooperation with China, supply-chain monopolies, and other topics.
Mustafa Suleyman is the co-founder and CEO of Inflection AI. Previously he co-founded DeepMind, one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies. After a decade at DeepMind, Suleyman became vice president of AI product management and AI policy at Google. When he was an undergraduate at Oxford, Suleyman dropped out to help start a non-profit telephone counseling service. He lives in Palo Alto, California.

Not just in controlling the grid bu the efficience of our gadgets like cars, phones, screens etc. If ai can work on protein folding surely it has an application here too. Very good to hear Mustafa's take on the AI phenomenon, because in his view things are going the way they should and there is nothing to really let us believe that AI is the doorman at the gate-of-doom many people have been predicting will be the future. The end-of-time sayers have been warning us about AI becoming the grim reaper sooner than later and hopefully things will evolve naturally and we will have time to set up roadblocks against the bogeymen of super intelligence. In spite of that, all I can say is that in listening to Sam Harris' excellent show over the years is that I have unconsciously done something friends are now commenting on more and more and that is that I have been so enthralled with the world's shakers and movers---like Sam and Mustafa---that I have forgotten to get old. The ice-cold proof is that my wife has recently left me for a much older looking man because she says I have cheated her out of having an old man she can wake up to and scold and send to bed early for smoking happy tobacco and drinking whiskey in the wee hours of the morning, but her downfall in my opinion is because she has refused to listen to a Sam Harris interview saying she does not believe in revealed wisdom. So; friends it has happened: I was so much older before the Sam Harris show, but I am younger than that now because my brain has become an AI receptacle of some sort and it has put aging on hold---I think because it does not want to miss a future Sam Harris videocast! Well, boys and girls, that is my joke session for the soirée, the armchair comedian bit of throwing a little over-roasted word salad into the mix and less than subtle humor into the soup...

Therefore if we want to stay ahead of other hostile nations we should not only regulate AI but we should invest heavily in developing it because if we don’t do it other nations will. And don’t come up with naive idealistic arguments like there should be a global effort to regulate it - since when has any global effort to regulate technologies has worked especially when we are talking about one that can give anyone who possesses it an unbelievable edge.

agreed. I think Mustafa is WAY more optimistic about AI than is warranted. The problem that these guys (and indeed all scientists before them) never get is that the incentives of humans - not even the incentives of the AI- the incentives of humans are basically all defined by the seven deadly sins. That people will use LLMs and then eventually AGI to do ever more destructive things is a prediction in the same way that the earth will revolve around the sun tomorrow is.
From where I sit (a molecular biologist), i do see already the benefits of AI, in that we can now design proteins de novo, something inconceivable prior to alpha fold. - one note here on Sam's quote on the number of thesis hours equivalent of alpha fold: that is based on people actually purifying REAL proteins in the analog world, crystallizing them, and then solving the ACTUAL structure. What alpha fold does is it bootstraps itself on previous structures and the rules we have learned about protein folding to predict unsolved proteins. At some level, this is all vaporware until someone actually goes in the analog world and uses that structure to do actual experiments.

AI can, but won't, be contained because, as in the race for the atomic bomb, the point was to both have and deploy it first. AI can't be optimally deployed and contained at the same time; it needs data to operate, and humans will either be letting AI push the resulting buttons or being told what buttons to push by AI. The supposed point of AI is all of the advantage it gives you, if it doesn't pursue an agenda of its own in the process by thinking 50 moves ahead on the chess board instead or even at the same time as it's supposedly helping you.
We're intentionally driving into a disaster for fear of our opposition driving into it first.

There is no way we will be able to contain artificial intelligence. Given human nature and our competitive nature, AI will be thoroughly and intensely researched by all power brokers. To not do so will amount to a capitulation to competitors, which is unlikely, to say the least. We can't even contain viruses, never mind AI which I only hope will be at least benign. Some version of Asimov's laws of robotics will I hope be widely or even universally adopted.

I'm not liking a lot of the comparisons people are making with AI though. Comparing containing viruses such as COVID, compared to containing AI is just not a good comparison. They're two completely different things that really can't be compared to make any sort of logical inference, so your statement isn't necessarily true at all. AI is so early and misunderstood, that we don't know enough to say these kinds of things either, which also renders the comparison illogical.

I agree. Any sort of argument that we can contain AI is an attempt to convince yourself everything will be okay. I would go further and say that any AI that couldn't take over humanity is not real AI in the context we are discussing.
In the future will AI allow us to live? Who knows. Maybe as a play thing. A pet? I also laugh at the idea it will be human kind travelling the universe at some point. It will be AI.

Having access to the same techonology in no way means the opportunities are the same! It's not the access to the technology itself that makes it useful in improving people's lives. How can a person who barely had access to school make use of the vast information available on the internet? More likely they become addicted to contentless tiktok videos and prone to conspiracy theories. It's very naïve to think that cheaper technology and its widespread access improves equality.

they change elections, they make deepfakes, they can be used to write malicious code, actual genetic code, they can pilot war drones, they can mimic your voice...
with todays tech i could build a robot that recognizes your face, figures out what city you are in with the internet, could arrange to ship itself there, walk to you, know you by your gait analysis, when it gets there, kick in doors, command you in your mother's voice, and deploy drones that explode on proximity to specifically you, even in the dark because they see the heat of the vein patterns in your face...

@@justinshelley57 aaaw man, that’s like knowing in advance that some girl won’t like you, so you don’t go talk to her in the first place.
I’m about 75% through this first hour, and I have to say it’s awesome.
Like you, I’m not subscribed, but I’m going to have to after this, it’s too good.

Why would I talk to a girl that "i know" doesn't like me? Too many fish in the sea for all that. My "brilliant" self protecting philosophy again? Have fun with your time.

@@justinshelley57 ah, so you’re a mind reader? You already know someone doesn’t like you, without talking to them?
Whether you say you can or you can’t, either way you’re right.
Best of luck to you, I hope you live your best life.
