Love watching you woke with the hives. I know you said you don't recommend the Flohive for new beekeepers, but it makes it look so easy!

Bee keeping and maintenance is so fascinating and while I haven’t got the facility to keep bees I’m very pleased to learn.

Well that was interesting! As a kid we cooked on an open fire all summer and the yellow jackets were miserable! If they could bite into your food they’d bite into you!

Great video Todd. Today it got up above freezing the sun came out. So i got over to my beeyard and got the styrofoam insulation around them. So they are ready for winter. I always think its neat to see what people do to their bees to get ready for winter, in different parts of the world. Thanks again

I so wish I could have a hive, it is sincerely so interesting watching & learning about them. I have heaps of bees this year in my spring/summer garden but also have a heap of our native bees too as a neighbor has a small native bee house. Chees Denise - Australia

So much work, so little reward. The supermarket has all the honey I will ever need.

    Every beekeeper hates wasps! LOL
One way of clearing your super (or flowhive in your case) is to put it under the hive it came from, perhaps with the queen excluder ontop) so the queen can't move down into it. The workers will retain ownership of the box and move any remaining honey above their brood nest (i.e "nadir"). This prevents other bees/wasps from robbing it out (which is a great way to spread bee disease by the way) - just reduce the entrance if you haven't already. Wasps have a great sense of smell and will target any undefended colony - as will robber bees from other colonies. When the frames are licked dry, you can wrap the entire box in cling-film (or equivalent) which will prevent waxmoth getting in.
I'm sure Rachel has plans for the honey :-)

I LOVE your channel! Can’t wait to move to our property and do all the things! I do have a question, will you be harvesting the bees wax and keeping it for projects or leaving it be? I don’t know very much about bee keeping.

I have 2 flow hives - I love them. Melbourne, Australia - open feeding is illegal for us, even sticky frames. I have to freeze and then store my fames each winter. Our season just ramping up - 2 splits already.

You can put a cover of netting over the the bottles as you're filling them or Saran wrap or you can do what you're doing and just take a pair of chopsticks out there with you and dip in and pull the bees out as they fall in

Great job! Getting thru the first year of beekeeping is a real test. Did you know there's a dog they use in Maryland that detects foulbrood by sent? (I think it's foulbrood, read about it quite a while ago...)

@That1870sHomestead I wonder if you could finish dehydrating the honey by putting it in the dehydrator.

This is fascinating, I’ve never paid much attention to harvesting honey, just staying away from things that can sting me 😂. Will you do anything thing with the beeswax or does it get reused?

If you put a 90 degree elbow on you out pipe and a 2-3 inch piece pointing down. Then cut a hole in a lid, this will keep everything out of the jar.

I've never seen "Flohive" before as the people that I know use an extractor that uses syntrifical (?) force to spin all the honey 🍯 out. I'll have to show this video to a few beekeeper friends of min. Is rather interesting.

Do you collect the bee's wax and use it? If so... for what different things? Thanks

  • @PharmSilver

Just test the water % in the last batch you have. It’s possible it’ll be under 21% total water content. I had 8 frames that were not more than 25% capped. All the honey tested at 15-18%.

You mention the yellow jackets, Fredrick Dunn modified his tunes so that the honey would flow more directly into his jars. You might want to check him out as he has done a few videos on the flow hive.

    • @Jemelet

Recap mason jar lids! That's what he used to prevent bees and wasps entering the open jars.

  • @jchai1343

I was watching and thinking those yellow jackets were going to get in and go for a swim ,does that contaminate the honey ,can you not rig up something so they cannot get in just for sake !

So, we take all the bees honey and feed them sugar water?

    • @1870s
      @1870s  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Some people do. Not me. I don't take anything from the bottom boxes. That all belongs to them. You always have to feed in the fall, to fill every space in the hive. And the raw sugar (mountain camp method) is for emergency. Some hives are weaker than others as well.
