    A Hack job is a hack job, no matter who did the work. I know a great many "unlicensed" people that do great work, with pride. I also know many "licensed" people that I would run from. The point is if they take pride in their work.

      In Illinois, there is no license for hvac. EPA card is all you need to open an account and buy refrigerants. Can pull permit in all towns with insurance and bond.

    • @taylerellis378
      @taylerellis378 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not sure what is meant by unlicensed or licensed anyways. No such thing here in Illinois unless you mean boneded and insured which doesnt mean anything all you have to do is pay the fees for that and still be a hack of all hacks. Yes you do however need an epa certification but again anyone can get that in an hour and pay a fee and its good for life. I have been in the field for 20 years commercial and residential repairing systems like VRF. There is nothing wrong with a guy doing side work if he has the experience. Being licensed or unlicensed makes no difference. To be compeletly honest you will have better luck with someone who is a true professional doing side work than a fresh tech from that big residential outfit that is also charging 2x the price. Just get everything in writing and ask for a warranty in writing. Usually the warranty is the manufacture warranty anyways that will cover everything but labor for a minimum of 5 years usually longer.

    My days of fixing stuff like that are over. I got fed up with customers getting the hacks for cheap then thinking I should get it working for cheap. I price myself put of this kind of work

    • @sdc7911
      @sdc7911 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very accurate! When they get it cheap, they think the repairs or total re-do is supposed to be cheap also, and get upset, but remember they found the hack for a reason. “Most” landlords are terrible and don’t even want to pay a hack his price. I mean, I don’t see a rental price section in Lowes where you get lumber cheaper because it’s a rental. Unfortunately it’s not going away.

    I especially loved the attic disconnect plan. Also, a wonderful idea in leaving the old equipment in the attic. Noticed 100% flex ducting vs. rigid ducting with flex. I wonder if they installed a filter location. So the condenser compressor was burned out? Looked fairly new so it likely wasn't charged correctly etc.

      Now we're looking at $3,000 MORE.
      Next time he serviced it I complained it was leaking through the ceiling and he said ok and then said he fixed it.
      it still leaked and I had to put a large 30 gallon trash can under the ceiling to collect all the water.
      Here I am now with a HUGE hole in my ceiling where the water leaked caused it fall to the floor and water was practically pouring out of my ceiling!!!

Also that pee trap needed done that electrical box need to be mounted. overall the install really needed to be redone and start over. people just don’t care anymore licensed or not quality work just isn’t there anymore. One question is...After paying too fix the original installer's screw ups, did they still end up saving money? I had a situation where the job involved replacing a 3 ton heat pump & air handler plus replacing two line sets that ran under a concrete walkway. We had quotes of $29,000, $23,000 and $11,500. The low bidder was a licensed one-man outfit. Part of the problem was that the the two higher bidders were using a software program to price the issue of the concrete walkway and the low bidder was dealing with the actual effort involved. Also union labor vs one man shop. We had almost come to the conclusion that we could fix any possible screw-ups for less than the extra $11,500, but then discovered that the shop had liability insurance but no workers comp. That was a deal breaker for this organization. So, we negotiated the $23,000 price down to $18,000 and just paid the price.
