Anywho a horror game I had fun with was "Pony Island". A neat 6ish hour pixel graphic game that starts with the simple premise of playing as a happy pony jumping fences which goes awry. 5 USD on steam. Either way, looking forward to shocktober!

Game summary:
A little girl was walking her dog but due to her carelessness a tragic accident happens to her dog.
The girl returns home to her sister. The sister offers to go look for the dog and later that night disappears as well. It is now up to the girl to go search for her missing dog and sister.
But for some reason the town is filled with spirits that want to harm the little girl. She will need to solve the mysteries of the town to find her loved ones but at the same time watch out for the spirits that roam the town.
Game Grumps played it a bit, and it looks right up your alley.

@@onyxsuccubus Even better, the rule it sets down regarding crafting/"breather" areas being safe zones, which is a pretty common and rarely subverted trope... then you get to that damn U-Bench halfway through stage 7 (Engineering IIRC?) and start crafting... then noises start coming from that vent just behind you...

There is a section in dead space 2 where you enter an elevator and a necromorph just attack you trough the vent
Prey did the same sh*t when you fix the elevator it loses power and the lights go out, you hear a noise and then bam f*cking Typhon in your face thankfully that one gives you a shotgun
I know this is late, but I am going to reply anyway. Once in the original Dead Space halfway through the story I was browsing through the shop trying to see what new items were in store, and out of nowhere a Necromorph jumps at me from behind and started swinging. I nearly shat myself trying to exit the menu while figuring out why the hell I was being attacked in a safe zone. Then one more Necromorph popped up from the vents and they both ganged up on me.
Needless to say, I died and had to start from the last checkpoint to get there again. When I reached, nothing happened, but I was still ever so cautious, along with confused and on edge. Ever since then I would double check every corner within any area that appeared "safe" to make sure nothing was around before I ever crafted/bought something. People say the encounters are scripted -- probably in the later games, but definitely not in the first Dead Space.

Not really a short RPG game, but Darkwood is a easteuropean, atmospheric horror game that does not get enough attention it deserves. Gameplay around 12-24h.

Hey indeimaus, there is also a secret gamemode for this game that you unlock by playing at midnight
You can also access a secret room by turning the gamma all the way up and starting a new game. There's also a sort of prequel if you do the same thing but turn the gamma all the way down

Not sure if you've ever played or heard much about Clock Tower 3, but I think that'd make a very... interesting playthrough. XP It's a bit on the longer side though, at least compared to something like this. If you wanna keep 'em shorter, I'd say try any of the Puppet Combo games. Maybe Babysitter Bloodbath or Power Drill Massacre, they're both pretty good, if challenging.
Yay, Lost in Vivo is amazing. Also has tons of secrets btw, maybe you found them already I didn't watch the full video yet, if not, I'd suggest playing with the brightness settings and also starting the game at midnight for example. There's much more but I don't wanna spoil everything

You can play the entire series for a single video, but there’s two games that I have very recently fell in love with called Faith Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. They are masterful works of video game storytelling and prove that something can be scary with atmosphere and tension alone, with very minimal graphics. Seriously, anyone reading this should check them out, they are AMAZING.

You know it's a terrifying horror game when a puppy fucking drowns only a few minutes into the game.
I'm not even playing the game but the train trying to come through the fence scared me and made me laugh at the same time. That's how you know its a quality made game, when it scares you and makes you chuckle.

A couple years back someone made Silent Hill: Alchemilla and I've been waiting for someone I like to play it.
So you are just gonna use Internet's super star Rich Evans just to gain subscribers.
Penumbra is a good series of horror games that could be neat to play. They're all pretty short as well so that's a plus. Just a bit wonky, but cool to see what the deves of Amnesia were up to before hand. And the fan made sequel mod Necrologue is bloody top notch.
The doggo, is a service dog. That's not a pepesi symbol, he's an emotional support dog. I think this game has a deeper message now that I realize that :D

Have you played Infliction yet? I've only had a chance to play it for a couple hours, but from what I got from it, it's a daunting horror atmosphere where you're constantly being hunted and messed with whilst trying to piece together the mystery of it all, and from what I can tell from where I got to, banish the evil that's haunting you.
It feel like the creators of the game are doing things right, and you'd probably enjoy it... Or maybe shit yourself, like I almost did.
