    Metallica's classic albums were in E standard tuning. In the mid 90s Metallica tuned down to E flat, then to drop C, and then gloriously returned to the good-ol' EAGDBE. But Metallica still play half step down live. So, what's the deal with Metallica tunings?

      Never even seen a need to detune when you can just get a 7-string. There may be one or two cases where a lower riff would be easier to play on an open string than on the low B string but I rarely seem to encounter this issue.

    An other reason I thought of is that E standard tuning is by essence tighter than the other tunings. And so, it fits the speed and precision of thrash metal so well. When you tune down your guitar, the strings are more loose and thus the picking is more "wavy" but less precise, perfect for a groovy heavy sound. That's why it's great for albums with mid tempo songs like Load and Reload, even the Black album and Youthanasia to some extend. And so when Metallica returns to their thrash roots with death magnetic and hardwired they maybe tried to recapture this tightness by tuning to E standard again

    • @CaptainRudy4021
      @CaptainRudy4021 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The looseness in the strings in lower tunings can be mitigated by using thicker strings

    I disagree that the arrangements are less advanced than the early stuff. The early albums are basically just two guitars playing the same riffs. The Load era stuff has four or more guitar tracks on it. As a kid it was confusing trying to learn all the load stuff from books because of all the different parts. The riffs are definitely easier on load but the arrangements are crazy.

      James voice was still pretty high pitched in the kill em all days. He was only 19 when they recorded the album. Then he got older, his voice got deeper (not very noticeable compared to rtl but very noticeable compared to mop ajfa and the black album) and then his voice gave out. He likely tuned it to D cuz of how high pitched it was and how fragile his voice was at the time.

    I’ve been creating a compilation of Metallica songs played in C#. See, in music theory when talking about E tuning it’s usually referring to the key of e minor. So by switching to C# you get E major in the shape of C# minor. It’s obviously really muddy by Metallica standards but it creates a sort of magic with their music where you downtune enough to be relevant in modern metal but not down tuned enough to not have any kind of coherency in the instrument sound.
    It’s a brutal tuning that lends well to older songs but not too muddy. It’s kind of a balance.

    Its odd that often those who are perfect as a fit are often the last to see it. Its also hilarious that Lars has the sense of self worth that far exceeds his abilty. James on the other hand is model of the invaluable frontman with great vocal range, great screaming vocals, great singing vocals, and just as ideal on the stage without the studio effects. But then.you add on that James IS a riff machine also who IMO writes the BEST riffs in the business. The perfect balance of a catchy groove to grab the masses attention, while still maintaining high end technical integrity. James CAN br8ng the leads/ solos also and even put Hammett to shame, but has the clear understanding that the cornerstones of a great metal band are its riffs & percussions as a bedrock foundation. Not the leads. All this said, I would give my left nut to see either one of James teaming up with the smashing pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain who in heavier pumpkins albums just fkn GOES OFF on the skins that is great at fusing jazz style percussions into heavy music. Chamberlain can easily produce a neil pert performance, only with no need for the drum set that was excess that resembled a fun park ride. I have seen Jimmy in concert take a basic trap set, add a couple of heavy kettles for extra mass and prove he IS a freak of nature drummer. I would have to imagine that if you took the heavy catchy riffs with solid groove and backed them up with similar talent on the percussions, I would easily bet the farm theyd produce a kick ass heavy album for the ages. Would love to see it happen.

    Talking of tuning down. I heard recently (Rick Beato mentioned it on a "What makes this song great" abot Master of Puppets) that Flemming apparently said thay tuned down to D and recorded at a slower tape speed, so that when it was played at full speed everything was tighter.... (Might partly explain why The Thing That Should Not Be was in D, on the album anyway).....

How did the band approach it since I'm assuming they were pretty burnt after more than a year on the road?
    I would die o have some kind of episode about it or the best would be to include this in the list of question to ask the band for the famous interview you're planning to make. Cheers from italy Andriy

    But whatever makes them happy.

    • @honigdachs.
      @honigdachs. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel it's the opposite - tuning down even slightly very much changes the tone of the guitar and also massively influences how the music feels to play, and to listen to. To my ears, a guitar sounds completely different going from E down to D, and it directly influences my playing. Tuning down a song like Sad But True was a brilliant piece of advice (thanks, Bob!), but especially for faster material or songs with a lot of notes, it doesn't work. Bands generally tune down too much, and they end up not sounding good.
