You cannot find this guitar riff on Metallica's Orion isolated guitar track (download them below). Even though you can hear it in Orion's studio version. It sounds similar to Cliff Burton's bass, but it's clean guitar. And Metallica doesn't play the riff live. We're trying to decode the lost guitar riff of Orion and figure what happened to it. Banjo player James is the scariest version of him. You can see him playing it on “A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica” documentary.
James even had his Lynyrd Skynyrd fashion phase in 1991 too.

It’s very odd that kirk and James’ riff and solo tapes can be found virtually anywhere but all cliff’s tapes disappeared. He practiced for a third of his day and supposedly nothing was recorded to listen back on? I hope some come up one day, I bet there were a lot of good unused ideas.
He came in the studio, when James, Lars and Kirk recorded their parts (of MOP) and returned to America. He recorded his bass after other instrumets, so probably because of that we dont have any of his tapes at this moment(

@@AndriyVasylenko There's also a chance that Kirk recorded some demo basses as it's known that he plays bass too, on known demos bass is player either by then-current bass players or James, but it's because some demos were recorded by James and Lars without the rest, however If Orion demo was recorded with Kirk and without Cliff, then there's a chance that Kirk played demo bass.
He played bass on the demo for Devil's Dance (most notably imo)

I only started to hear this riff after Jason played Orion with a pattern similar to this one, then picked up the similarity while listening to Orion's studio version. It's insane even after 10+ years of listening to this band I discover shit that has only been a mistery because of really stiff mixing and lack of tabs.

Why no mention of Orion starting out as a interlude part for welcome home Sanitarium. As stated by Kirk in his recent video on Gibson TV icons? That may explain why Orion's composition is the way it is. And why parts were added, subtracted and may be misplaced during recording.
3:45 this reminds me that the song Harvester of Sorrow had the chorus changed before being released. In the rough mix version, James sings "Havester of Sorrows" with an "S" instead of "Sorrowoah" like he does in the release version.

I think Orion wasn't ment to be instrumental. On Metallica's demo tapes from 85 Sanitarium and Orion were one song called Only thing. It was whole Sanitarium an interlude from Orion and it was played from interlude to the end.

That's because by the time "only Thing" demo was recorded the band had forced Cliff to make Orion a whole band song and struggled to find a place for it. Cliff's Orion is actually just the middle interlude into a roaring bass solo to the end

You, like me, want to understand the music, absorb the finest and smallest details of every second of our favorite band. As a musician who has no creative bone, I have spent my musical life learning everything I know by trying to mimic those songs that made me the metal fan that I am today. I remember sitting in my basement listening to Orion trying so hard to figure out what was going on and then trying to replicate it so many years ago. Who I failed miserably it was a start on a fantastic journey. With all the sincerity a Metallica fan can have for another audio analyze as yourself, I simply want to say thank you. It's wonderful to see someone else discover the things that I've thought about, or show me things I never knew no matter how much I tried to understand. Keep on rocking and rolling. I look forward to your next nugget of wisdom to make my next Metallica cover be even better than before.

That's Kirk's solo. Even the bass solo was supposed to be played by Kirk but Cliff took over. Kirk said so in some interviews.

They played that riff in the 1993 Orion/to live is to die/call of ktulu. I believe the one in sweden where it starts with Jason finishing his solo by smashing his head on his bass
