      The one vs Paul in Houston with the backhand down the line after the underarm serve

      60% is worse, than Nick‘s average 1st serve point won %. How is it a weapon?

      @@heavygamer9511 Looking at recent history, he wins about 75% of his first serves, and gets it in about 70% of the time. When he's forced to go to his second serve he's only slighty above 50% successful. So it's more effective than his second serve, but less than his first serve. It (may) also forces guys to come in on a shorter ball, rather than being deep for his first serve, so it could potentially win him some first serves if guys start creeping in expecting the underarm serve, or if they start sitting too far back for the first serve overarm style. Still, it seems like a minor weapon since he rarely uses it. I wonder what would happen if someone just went nuts with it, hitting it like a quarter of the time so the returner is constantly having to change their return position. If I were a returner I'd always play for the traditional overarm serve until someone starts throwing in the underarm serve ad nauseum.

      @@heavygamer9511 it forces the opponent to stand closer to the baseline - in turn rising the effectiveness of his regular first serve

      Equally you can say standing 3 miles behind the baseline is disrepectful. I reckon there should be more underarm serves.

      @@tomr6955 I'd love to see someone weaponize it. Just barely clear the net with a lot of sidespin, and do it consistently. Make it so the returner can't stand 10 feet behind the baseline. Maybe faster players could still get an early enough read that they could stand way back and get to underarm serves if needed, but having to do that over and over would at least tire them a bit.

    Nick's under arm serve is effective because he's such a big server. It forces the opponent to up his return position closer to the baseline to be on alert for his under arm serve, which in turn makes his other serves much more effective. Examining the effectiveness of the under arm serves on their own is pointless.

    • @tomr6955
      @tomr6955 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He should have used it more. Eg his wimbledon vs Nadal. Nadal was miles back.

    • @MaestroAbar
      @MaestroAbar 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tomr6955 He probably felt no need to use his underarm serve against Nadal, as Nadal was struggling to break Kyrgios' serve at Wimbledon. His serve mindgame also seemed to have developed quite a bit in the last few years, as he used his mix-up to some devastating effect at USO22.

  • @nogatekeepers
    @nogatekeepers 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    It's a great strategy to mix in, but keep in mind Nick wins more than 60 percent of his serve points normally since he's got such a great serve

    It's a good percentage and this percentage can increase even more if he plays with people who like to return from too far like Nadal, Medvedev or Thiem

    Underarm serving is an extreme punish for those trying to receive 5 meters behind the baseline. Nick already has one of the most powerful serves on tour which cause his opponents to move back further. To keep them in check, he deploys the underarm, which is shorter and forces his opponent to come closer to the baseline. Regardless of whether it is successful in winning the point or not, his opponents use a lot of energy trying to chase the ball down.

    He usually does it only when he is 40-0 up, so it's not a big deal. But it can be very effective against someone Iike Nadal or Medvedev, who stand way back on return.

    Nick's underhand serves are too deep in the service box. If he practiced it with more side spin and have it land in the half of the service box closer to the net, he'd have way more aces. It's basically a drop shot from the baseline.

  • @bartholomewlyons
    @bartholomewlyons 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Note he only served to the Ad side. More natural for the ball to spin outside to the backhand of the opponent

      @@Thebtfgame The video was good though! If you are going to use those sounds again just turn them down a lot more. Best thing to do is, when you’ve almost finished the video, turn it up really loud and listen to those sound effects when they happen. You’ll notice that they come out way too loud compared to the other sound from the video clips.
