yeah. really gives perspective on the way guys like Agassi and Federer have been able to smack these sorts of serves casually straight back past the server for winners like it was nothing
Look at some of the results players with these rankings are pulling off against top players. I know people say they have slowed down courts since the 90s but players are more athletic and there is more depth. Unless you have a strong tennis federation behind you or some serious money the biggest challenge is qualifying for events that reward ATP points. Skill, talent and athleticism are a start but consider that Nick Kyrgios and Andy Murray both rely on wildcards for most tournaments they enter which just makes it even harder for lower ranked players to qualify for ATP events. Compare tennis players to athletes from team sports and they barely have a chance to compete. Most top soccer clubs have almost as much depth as the entire ATP tour.

So here's a funny bit of perspective. Serena Williams hits her serves at roughly the same speed as Otto. But in a poll of 1700 adults in Great Britain, 12 percent of men and 3% or women thought they could win a point off her. Not return her serve, they thought they could actually win a point.
In a best-out-of-three sets match, you'd have 48 chances to win that point, whereas in the case, you get one shot. To put it in perspective, I think 12% of men and 3% of women here also have a good chance of winning €1000 if they had 48 tries, if you also consider the guy has to serve 48 times without fault :).
What is really funny is that otto is about 176 in the world and even top club players are not likely to win a point. I once talked to a player who was ranked 1000 or so. The main difference between a player who is ranked 1000 or top 100 or top 10 is mostly mental. Skill wise there is little difference. The top 1000 player falters on the big points like 30-40 (double fault, unforced error, etc) and often cant consitently play well in consecutive matches. The top 100 player wont fall apart under pressure and is more consistent but wont make the spectacular play when it really counts. @@eddyecho that might be true, but my point is how amazing professional athletes are compared to regular folk. Their skill and physical ability are mind blowing.
It's not just mental. There is a huge difference in skill level between the top 5 and say someone ranked 50th. It's why top players can win matches 6-0 6-0. They are better at serving, returning, general agility, stamina etc etc. It's the same principle that made Usain Bolt unbeatable for years, and why he destroyed the competition. It's not (just) mentality. The top athletes are clearly much better. Due to the way that skill is distributed (a normal distribution on a bell curve) the difference between #1 and #5 (number one is much better) is greater than the difference between #45 and #50 (these guys are closely matched with each other, but much worse than the top guys). If the top 50 were all pretty similar, and their results depended on mentality, you wouldn't have someone staying at #1 in the world all year.

the court is not big enough. watch pro matches and see how far back players stand when they return serves of opponents who serve big theyre like 15ft behind the baseline
I saw Andy Murray return Raonic's 235kph serve at wimbledon, it was unreal! I don't know how he did it so consistently but he used to stand closer than other people which makes sense in a way.
@@playagame3107 He's 5.7 feet tall. These serves are quite high and the fact that he is one of the best returners and baseline players , says a lot. Weight and height differences matter a lot in 1 vs 1 sport. He doesnt have a big serve and has limited reach with lesser leverage to work with. He deserves all respect.
@@studywithkaran8491 He returns pretty far back so I dont think the height of the serves make that much of a difference but yeah true being small is a disadvantage.
Otto's future is very very bright, I watched some matches he is young talented and had some amazing wins against top 150 players, Finland will have another top 100 player very soon.
His problem is just his mentality. I follow his Challenger matches and he's very erratic. A lot of times when he's down a break or losing he just starts tanking and stops playing completely. I remember one match quite recently where he choked break points then got broken the game after in the first set. After that he just stood still in all the remaing return games, doesn't even try to run and get the balls, and he also hit double faults on purpose to end the set quicker.
To be able to receive a big serve you should stand as far back as possible and jump step early to pick a side. Especially since it's a once off serve it's basically a 50/50 prediction but the early step and deep position should give you a good chance
It's hard to express just how good the serve is by tennis pros. It's like imagine you play at high school, then college, then country club. Winning all the time too. Then you beat all the other country club players. Then beat all the players that play around the area. Then start to beat all the players around the country. Then can beat all the players most of the time in your country and surrounding countries. Now you are approaching how good an ATP ranked player is.
its amazing how much faster the serve appears against an amateur, as opposed to a pro receiving such a serve. While watching serves like this during pro tournaments look intimidating, I never thought of it as looking like a bullet till now. Incredible anyone could have the reflexes or reaction speed to get even close to returning it. Literally a tiny fraction of a second.
Most of these are aces at the pro level. This dude is a serve master or having a good day or they let him keep serving until it's in so he's only going big here; but he clearly lacks other parts of the game or consistency otherwise he could easily be top 10 with that serving ability. I'm not saying his serve is top 10, just that serving like this isn't what's going to make him or break him at that level if he can consistently serve like in this video, and not fall to pressure and stamina drain. Djokovic might've returned half of these (maybe more) but not all of them, and most professional females might not be able to return any of them just like the random peeps in the video (tho many of them would likely at least touch the ball). These serves are legit bombs which isn't fair as a challenge for amateurs tbh.
@@slbaaron Thanks! They really look like rockets, even more so than in big pro tournaments. Your explanation clarifies a lot, that if the top players would find these serves extremely challenging, and female players barely a chance. At returning any of them. Thanks again!

If anyone gets the chance to attend qualifying before a big tennis tournament, I highly recommend it. I go to US Open nearly every year, and you can sit just a few feet away from pros. It gives a whole other perspective on the speed and placement of their serves and groundstrokes. It is really amazing.
If Otto missed the serve was it just retaken? If so there would be no consequences to missing his 1st serve, which is unrepresetative of a proper match play serve. There is no way he hit the corners every time as was suggested in this video
I think it would’ve been better if you at least told the contestants which side of the service box to expect the final serve. It would’ve been cool to see at least one person win the whole challenge.
I’ve started playing tennis. I wouldn’t even be able to return the serve of a top player. Looking to improve my game. It’s amazing the work that these pros do to reach their levels.
That was a fun video. I was a competitive player once upon a time and got to play against a few guys who later got into the world top 20. The difference between a decent club player and a pro, is like a toddler fighting a bear. Just making contact was a win and getting a few back was like winning the US Open.
As a former professional table tennis player, after I retired started playing Tennis as one of my hobbies and was able to return some of those fast blazing professional tennis serves(185 km/h) after I adjusted to them and practice with them for a few sessions and nobody believed I was into Tennis for 3 months only, I lost also 10 Kg on my first 3 months playing tennis on daily basis for 2 hours during summer, I had the best shape in my life after table tennis OFC. Also, was able to play with seasoned non-pro tennis players who where playing regularly for 10+ years and made them eat the dust with my serves. OFC, I got professional tennis equipment right away and some tennis coaches told me I was a natural and I believed it because same thing happened in badminton. What they didn't know and nothing is free in life, those exhausting years I spent on physical training and technique in table tennis finally paid off.

I trained for years. I played at NTRP 5.5-6.0, I know I can return a pro service. I could likely win a point every now and then, but my coach used to say “you wouldn’t take two points in a row”. A game is out of the question, I have seen pros but, the ball will almost ALWAYS COME BACK.

the court is not big enough. watch pro matches and see how far back players stand when they return serves of opponents who serve big theyre like 15ft behind the baseline
I’d really love to face an ATP level server… great opportunity for all those people! Great video as usual!
the guy was fighting a lot of effort when he went from his ten, wanted to clean
I saw Andy Murray return Raonic's 235kph serve at wimbledon, it was unreal! I don't know how he did it so consistently but he used to stand closer than other people which makes sense in a way.
Well Murray was the world No1 at one point in time and has won 3 grand slams in his career, so not your average player.
You guys should get Emil Ruusuvuori on the channel. He’s the number 1 ranked finnish tennis player, and number 60 in the world! Great video as always!
ikr, maybe in the off season, during the year Ruusu is so busy
The fact that Diego Schwartzmann has been a consistent top 20 player makes it even more impressive.
why?
Great to see Otto performing so well now. Got to Q3 at Wimbledon this year, he might even get a lucky loser spot if a few more withdraw
the sensei has a wicked serve too, don't underestimate him
Oh i see, so anyone named Otto is a beast!!
To be able to receive a big serve you should stand as far back as possible and jump step early to pick a side. Especially since it's a once off serve it's basically a 50/50 prediction but the early step and deep position should give you a good chance
Challenge: try to do a ping pong rally to a steady beat (metronome), or even harder - to a song!
My mind immediately went to Air Rally from Rhythm Heaven, that would be intense

Glad to see Otto (Professional Tennis player Otto not Table Tennis Otto if y’all are wondering) back again ABSOLUTELY DEMOLISHING the pongfinity team 😂
Omg thank you so much,i was so confused reading the comments about otto
The difference between elite athletes and the rest of us, even if we are really good at the sport, isn't even close. It's incredible how good these people are!
Sometimes I watch these pro vs joe videos and think, “yeah, I could do that.” This is not one of those times!
How is it that the Fins speak such great English?! Respect.
It's so impressive how fast those serves are, you really see how hard it is and the pro's make it look easy to return them.
there is a lot of ace in pro circuit on hard ground.
Otto Virtanen is now at a career high of 109 in the world and plays in the US Open Round 1 against Etcheverry
I was just watching the match and remembered this video lol
@@soy_deus5061 me too lol
I just watched the final set tie-break, pity Otto lost ... he looked a little bit tired in there ! Better outcome next time :)
I was playing tennis 3 years, but returning THIS serve wold be definitely beyond my possibilities
If anyone gets the chance to attend qualifying before a big tennis tournament, I highly recommend it. I go to US Open nearly every year, and you can sit just a few feet away from pros. It gives a whole other perspective on the speed and placement of their serves and groundstrokes. It is really amazing.
Looks like you boosted your tennis skills a bit since your last video from tennis court, guys! Well done!
We should do one for tennis players playing squash as well😂 (not biased towards my sport)
If Otto missed the serve was it just retaken? If so there would be no consequences to missing his 1st serve, which is unrepresetative of a proper match play serve. There is no way he hit the corners every time as was suggested in this video
The ball or the meteor! Damn that was too fast.
Thats actually a pretty great serve even for the top 100 atp players, average 200 kph with good angles
Novak Djokovic:- That's so cute
I think it would’ve been better if you at least told the contestants which side of the service box to expect the final serve. It would’ve been cool to see at least one person win the whole challenge.
Doesn't that kinda defeat the whole purpose? The biggest challenge in facing a good server is trying to read where they go.
@@DeeeFoo They still probably wouldn't have been able to return it, it would have made it more interesting at least.
agreed. i get that hes a pro and all but jeesh dude, serve it where they can at least react to it. hes going for blood every serve lol
The contestants could've gambled and chosen a side
8:45 "Did you feel any pressure there?"
"Yes, 100%"
I don't know why, but it made me laugh
Pongfinity never runs out of content
Except maybe content that is related to tavle tennis 🤭 jk nice video
The player descriptions are hilarious, especially "Just Woke Up" and "A Romantic Man."
I've always wanted to try that. But wow, that 200kph serve sounded like a gunshot compared to the other ones!
It's crazy that pro players return this serves all the time
Great pro-level serves from Otto! Everyone looked to be having a lot of fun! Cheers from the USA!
Another amazing video and idea by Pongfinity! You are the best, keep it up guys!
Also, challenge: play table tennis on a sloped table.
Otto's serve is brutal. Impressive how he control the ball at 200kph.
He does not "control it" at such speed, but propels it 😉
You can’t react to serves this fast, you have to recognize by their feet and stance where they are serving before it comes.
You can but you have to be in the right stance or you will be wrongfooted from the start and aced.
В каждом виде спорта достигается уровень понимания такой, что неважно кто и что перед тобой, главное - как ты можешь использовать слабость соперника. При этом ты должен преодолеть свои слабости
Otto should play professional tennis
Anyone here after watching Otto win against Team Canada in the Tennis Davis Cup Finals?!?
Funny that people do seem to think that a below average tennis player has a slight chance to return a pro's server. Not in 100 years. The only one who maybe had a chance was the first girl. She was a decent player. But hey, the Pro's serve is great. Ball placement was flawless. Nice Vid!
I've played tennis for 10 years since I was 6 but I don't think I stand a chance against that serves lol
Wow that's a lot faster than it looks on TV
Pretty sure most of those serves by Otto would be aces against Pros let alone these guys, he's not just hitting at speed he's hitting his spots
Ngl Emil’s 140 serve impressed me the most haha out of nowhere! 😅
This is my favourite video of yours absolutely love it! Hope your ankle gets better Emil :)
Hi Emma hope you are doing well and I call you upon to stand with us.
6:43 “My hospital bill after trying to receive these strokes” PAUSE
This is fun to watch! Also, nice video quality and effects added on it! 💯💯💯
Fun fact: Otto Virtanen has gotten so much better since the video came out. He's a top 100 player now!
Imagine being so good at a sport that it's hard to find anyone to play with.
Yay! Another Pongfinity video!!!!!
I've been learning how to make and string a normal tennis racquet, and I've decided to try and make a stringed table tennis racquet. This would be a interesting video if you guys can somehow commission them from a professional
such a wholesome video, had me smiling a lot! you're a great friendly bunch, so nice to watch you all! kudos
i wish there were more of ottos serves. honestly absolute beast. puts it close behind the net is crazy
Insane video great to bring Otto back for another pongfinity video. I love your vids keep up the good work!
Don't really care for the money, but the positivity is fantastic guys! Really really refreshing. And how are you supposed to return a 200 kph serve? You really do have to react on instinct I suppose...
