Chatuchak Plant Night Market - Ep 133

  • One of the first places I wanted to visit when in Bangkok was the Chatuchak Plant Market, which is like an endless flea market of indoor and outdoor plants. I was tipped off, however, to get there Tuesday night during set-up, as that is when all the collectors go to find the finest specimens-and some fine plants I DID see!

    Chatuchak is an amazing market. Been lucky enough to visit last time I was in Bangkok, but it is sad to see several orchid species that were obviously taken from the wild being sold there. I know that it is a very delicate topic, since they are the livelihood of entire families, but cannot help but feeling sad that not enough is being done to raise awareness in different parts of the world for this problem.

      Same here! The growth habit of Sansevierias and Dracaenas are so different (foliage straight up out of soil v. Growing from a stem or trunk) they need their own category! Also, it was only this year I learned the Latin name for Sansevierias...and my auto-correct just FINALLY learned to recognize the word. I don't want to have to start all over!

    It’s really best that one visits a huge market like this to explore and not buy. Treat it as you would an art museum, so you can take in the fascinating beauty and novelty, without intrusive thoughts of acquisition. If you do want to buy then make two separate visits. The first to make purchases, with a shopping list, or at least a general idea of what you’re looking for. Then make a return visit only to look and enjoy, not buy. I’ve done this with large nursery’s. This is also my strategy with big orchid shows, like Philadelphia and San Francisco. It really makes for a more enjoyable experience. ~ If I had to choose, I would have purchased a couple of the caudiciforms you showed. That’s becoming my new obsession.

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I go to shop, I typically have that list of what I'm looking for so it's easy in, easy out, because otherwise I find browsing and shopping intensely draining. I think by chance, because I wasn't buying anything, I inevitably was following your exact suggestions-treating it as if in a museum, which is an excellent suggestion!

      Glad you enjoyed it. I was traveling so much, it didn't make sense to get any plants. I was just there to scope (though I did go back with some small planters that can easily fit in luggage). And re: the thumbs down, I don't know who gives thumbs down; I figure people who are jealous or have some other emotional outburst like that; I don't do it on other people's videos; if you don't like something, just don't watch it! But I make the content for people who love to watch, like yourself, so thank you for that :)

    Thanks for the tour. I loved all of them, but the Hoyas, Wale fins and mostly the Monstera's really caught my attention.

    Hi Summer! I just watched the daytime video and enjoyed this one so much, too! I would definitely pick the Hoyas. How fun it would be to be able to smell the different blooms. I only have one Hoya that rarely blooms and I think it is a Publicalyx. I wouldn't even know it was in bloom until I could smell it late at night, then I'd have to find out where the flower was hiding. LOL! I love watching your videos and so appreciate it when you take us to other countries with you. Thank you so much for sharing!
