    We drove around the Black canyon of the Gunnison a few years ago. The scenic drive is beautiful. Unfortunately we had a hotel reserved in Durango that night and by the time we got to Ouray the sun was setting. We had to drive to Durango in the dark! It was the scariest drive ever. There were mule deer everywhere. But the stars were amazing!

    Super video. Just recently found your channel and subscribed. Your film making ability is really fine. All episodes have been great, but this one was over the top for me. Love your enthusiasm and good humor. I’d never be able to hike the trail being a retired senior and only in reasonably good shape, but I feel like I was given the opportunity to see it close enough to firsthand by watching. Thanks for sharing your fine images of our great country.

    Sir, I have been watching you for a year and a half now and your production value in the recent videos have been very impressive and I welcome it! Thank you for the extra effort in this hike, I know filming the B-Roll took its toll on you. Going back up and down every time you record is devotion! The end of the trail indeed looks very promising and I will definitely add this park to my trips in the near future.

    Randy, I think this is the most rugged trail I have ever seen you on, and looks like it is not something I would have done in my hiking days. We visited the Black Canyon about 25 years ago, when it was still a National Monument, and did not attempt any hikes. it looks like the NPS now have another very primitive national park. I really appreciate you making this video to take us to the bottom of the canyon. I’m really super impressed. THANK YOU FOR TAKING US ON YOUR HIKE, . . . Mike

    Omg; I enjoyed this video so very much! You are an amazing and brave trooper for doing this hike, and doing it alone! You are definitely a risk taker! I was there just a few years ago, and loved every moment of being there. I didn't hike, but did take the road down to the river, and I was shocked with those switchbacks and 16% grade! Hello America's Park's😊😊, Wow! Randy, I have been to Black Canyon and I saw first hand how steep it is to get to the bottom of that Canyon. I decided to turn around and make my way back. Black Canyon is absolutely amazing! Great video of the hike down and back and enjoyed watching it. Highway 50 is a SPECTACULAR drive in Colorado. East of Black Canyon is Monarch Pass where you can take a chairlift to the top of the pass and walk along the very top of the Ridge, overlooking the SPECTACULAR vistas in every direction. Great video Randy👍👍👍. Looking forward to the video.

    WOW-WHEE!! That hike to the bottom of the canyon was vertigo inspiring. Your comments about up versus down on steep trails (especially on rocky ones) were so true; I call it 'knees' and 'lungs.' When you said how you broke one of your trekking poles, it brought back a lost memory. On a hike with my friend Nancy several years ago to Wolf Rocks along the A-Trail near Bangor Pa., she accidentally bumped me and I went down between 2 rocks. One of my poles conveniently fell under my rear but kept me from getting wedged into a crevice. The pole was bent but not broken. I was able to straighten it out later with a rubber camping mallet. Lessons: use hiking poles and laugh about slight inconvenient situations.

    Hi Randy, that really is a challenging hike but well worth the effort. Someone said that there's a road that goes to the bottom of the canyon. If so, I think I would rather do that instead of the hike, only because there really is no trail nor is it well defined. Always enjoy your videos but this is the one that I was anticipating the most from your Colorado trip. It did not disappoint. Great effort! This one must have been exhausting to film. Hiking down a wrong trail, all the back and forth to get your shots.
    I am really enamored with these inner canyon hikes at this park. An extreme challenge but such beautiful scenery that few experience. I think this hike may be a difficult one to fully prepare. You know what to expect but until you are actually doing it, you just have no idea.
    The key question. Would you ever hike it again?

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind and insightful words, Michael! To answer your question - usually when I finish, it's "doubtful I'd do it again," but then after two days... lol!

    • @MichaelYoungblood1
      @MichaelYoungblood1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AmericasParks haha. Yup, that is usually how it goes. If there is a next time, I believe I read that one of the inner canyon routes on the North Rim takes you near a section of the canyon/river called The Narrows. The canyon is only about 40-50 feet across in this area. That would be pretty incredible to see.

I too have an adventurous spirit and being out in Gods creation gives me a deep sense of peace and satisfaction that is hard to match. Just curious as a married man myself, if your wife has always been so gracious in agreeing to let you out on your adventures? My wife doesn’t necessarily share the same passion for the outdoors as me so just wondering how you balance that. Thanks for all you do, I truly enjoy visiting the parks “with you,” on TH-cam.

      Hey Steven, great comment, brother! I do about 4-5 trips/year with my vacation time. My wife has been traveling a lot more of them with me. She is very gracious wanting to grant me the time to get away and "recharge the batteries" as I am a lead pastor of a large church. I am careful not to take advantage of her generosity. Also, she'd rather not be away that much, so it works well for both of us. God bless!

    Valuable video, because while we should challenge ourselves, we need to know our limits too. I think I'll enjoy this park from the viewpoints. Question: would you recommend long pants (rather than shorts) for this hike? See 6:07. Also, your music is too loud starting at 3:00, can't hear her.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Dan, long pants would be a good idea (but not necessary). However, I'd rather take a few bumps and bruises because I hike so much better in shorts. Yeah, with the music tried more for the "dreamy feel" of hearing her voice ringing in my head with all the complicated directions than providing the viewer with pertinent information. Probably could have made that better with a different musical selection. Enjoy your week!

    you did that trail alone, an unmarked trail, what if you made a huge tumble? no one to call, you'ld be just lying down there untill someone passes by (if someone passes by). Is it worth taking risks like that? Never hike alone. It's like diving, you never go diving alone. Great canyon though, it's on the list for the 2023 trip to the USA

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate the concern. Thankfully there are other hikers that pass by as this is a trail and the most popular one to the bottom. Additionally, you are required to turn in your permit in the evening. That way the rangers can keep accountability of who did not return from the 1.5 mile descent.
