Complete Shutdown Process of a 3800 Horsepower Engine EMD SD60 Locomotive

  • The entire process of shutting down an SD60 locomotive from running to completely dead. The entire process can be completed at the electrical cabinet behind the engineer's seat and at the control stand, with the exception of applying the handbrake. It is much faster shutting down an engine than starting it up.
    This engine is an EMD SD60 (special duty) and has 3800 horsepower. It was built in 1986.
    I do not work for the railroad in any way. This footage was given to me. I have more videos ready for release. Subscribe to stay in the loop!

    We are told to leave MCBs on as they are getting damaged turning them on and off as they are trip switches.

      Yes I am told the same. They’re for safety, not switching things off.

      I agree. Large engines like this are not designed to be shutdown and started up constantly.

    Awesome. Never knew it was that simple or that they would use the Emergency shut off to kill them. Works ether way.

    What made that extremely high pitched sound as you were shutting off the breakers?

    • @DLuxProductions
      @DLuxProductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      That loud squeal was a safety device alerting the engineer that it has been shutdown.

      @@DLuxProductions Just for clarification.
      At 0:34 Engineer hits the E stop button and you can hear the engine winding down.
      0:42 Engine stops completely and a loud beeping starts (about 4 beeps per second)
      0:54 Breaker labeled "safety devices" is flipped and an extremally loud and high pitch wine begins. Lowering in pitch as it goes on.
      1:04 The wine ends and only hissing air can be heard.
      I can under stand the beeping at 0:42, but are you saying the wine at 0:54 was also an alarm? Is it a pneumatically powered whistle? or is it just a system that happen to make a lot of noise?

      Probably with a railroad company, (if you want a job). If it's just a hobby then find a train simulator of some sort, they can cost a bit but if you find the right one you can get a very realistic experience.
