  • An Inside view of an EMD locomotive, Loco Pilot operate the loco & an ultimate Loco cab Ride from 0 Km/h to full 110 Km/h MPS [Maximum Permitted Speed] in Rajdhani Express locomotive EMD [Electro Motive Diesel] Locomotive GT46PACe.
    ======================================================
    About an EMD Locomotive
    -------------------------------------------
    The EMD GT46PAC is a passenger-hauling diesel-electric locomotive with AC electric transmission designed by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and built by both GM-EMD and under license by Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) of Varanasi, India for Indian Railways as their classes WDP-4, WDP-4B and WDP-4D. The GT46PAC is a passenger version of the previous Indian Railways EMD GT46MAC freight locomotive. The locomotive has a 16 cylinder 710G3B diesel engine with a maximum speed of 904 RPM.
    ======================================================
    Performance of WDP4B
    The WDP-4B which is a 4,500 hp (3,360 kW)126 t (124 long tons; 139 short tons) weighted loco with a single cab & capable of hauling 24 coach trains at 110-120 km/h (68-75 mph).
    It has got six traction motors and are Co-Co bogie equipped (more similar to WDG-4), unlike the original which has a Bo-1-1-Bo arrangement with four traction motors. Due to some controversies regarding visibility hindrances faced by loco pilots in driving long hood front, the basic WDP-4B model has been modified to dual cab to eliminate any such possibility. Other features of WDP-4B and WDP-4D are same. The cabs have a slightly wider profiles, to improve visibility.
    ======================================================
    The loco is very fuel efficient and has minimal exhaust emissions unlike ALCO based locomotives, thanks to its 2 stroke high efficiency diesel engine. It is characterized by its loud horn, which can be heard for large distances around, and aircraft-like sound of its running engine.
    The use of the locomotives "long hood forward" has been criticised because the driver might have difficulty in seeing signals. This criticism has been rejected by Indian Railways. But the solution to this problem is to upgrade all WDP-4 and WDP-4B models from single cabins to WDP-4D models of dual cabins.

    Clear visibility from long hood is tough for loco pilots. Good that WDP4D series with cabins at ends have come in place

    The sound coming at 8th Noch is amazing. The sound of horn coming at the speed of 110 km/h is amazing but I love the sound of horn when loco pilot apply both horn on the bridge. At last I want to say that loco pilot of India are amazing because they drive the train at a very high speed. one like for Indian loco pilot

    Really enjoyable entertaining video. Loved how when the Loco got to 105, 106, the Loco pilot put the engine to Notch 8 and you can hear the EMD drumming its beat, pulling the train to 110kmh again. I watched from start to finish. One of my favorite in-cab Loco videos on youtube. Cheers from Canada. EMD foreverrrrr......

    I come from a railway family. Right from my childhood I had a fascination towards trains especially super fast trains and the speed with which they run. When I was a child..I used listen to a lot of talk about Coromandel Exp..the top speed of 120 kmph with which it used run. I was very thrilled when we travelled for first time from Vizag to Howrah on Coromandel Exp..the speed was awesome and exciting. Enjoyed this video taken from loco pilots cabin. Hats off to our loco pilots who shud be given a special place in the society like our airline pilots..

But this video made me understand the job of being alert all the time to see the signalling lights and the pressure of responsibility of the people onboard and the stray animals/people on or around the tracks. Respect!

    First and foremost thanks for enchanting us with the experience of driving an EMD WDP4B Locomotive in Long Hood Forward(LHF)/Reverse mode. For those who say that there are visibility problems in that mode I wou'd like to clarify by saying that it is a wrong claim. The job of the Loco Pilot is to look out for signals at distances of 1-1.5Km ahead since the Locomotive itself traverses at speeds of 110-130Km/Hour and so the Long Hood itself helps to focus His vision so He doesn't feels sleepy or depends too much on Full 180° vision which is restricted to 90° and the Signals are clearly visible because there is no reflection of light in that area(All of You can test that Yourselves). Not only does it helps the Locopilots but it looks gorgeous from the Viewers perspective and all Locopilots should be proud of that fact. I would like to conclude by saying that even in the olden days of Steam Locomotives there's no concept of Short Hood Forward and so like that adage Long Hood Forward Locomotives continue to dominate on the railway tracks.
    The reason why two people - the Loco Pilot and the Assistant Loco Pilot are alloted is also to be brought here in context(Supposing a situation where the train is going through a gradient or negotiating a curve at it's Maximum Permitted Speed or under Speed Restriction the Signal may be obscured in the line of vision of the Loco Pilot because of the Long Hood but it is clearly visible to the Assistant Loco Pilot who communicates with the Loco Pilot and thus You can hear them conversing in the video). In most other scenarios the Loco Pilot sees the Signals and everything straight up ahead since such things line themselves up in the same plane as with the Loco Pilot seated on the Left side of the Locomotive thus there's no problem of visibility hindrances because of the Long Hood but Yes the reason why the Loco Pilot has to continuously honk in this mode is that He cannot see what's up ahead on the tracks about 20metres of his vision is obscured so He hopes and continuously makes the Locomotive honk so as to ward off anything away like people, domestic or stray animals off the tracks in order to make the train pass safely. I hope whatever I wrote till now that serves as an introductory basis for anyone who is curious and also saves a thousand explanations.
    Thank You all and have a nice day!

      Yes Fizzbuzz is right. There is a vigilance alert system where the LP has to press a switch every 60 seconds or ( a ) first yellow light will blink for 8 seconds. If ignored ( b ) a warning hooter will sound for 8 seconds. If still the vigilance switch is not pressed , then the emergency brakes will apply automatically. This is called penalty braking and is recorded in the loco log data.
      Coming to the horn , instead of pressing the vigilance alert switch , the same effect is got by (a ) pressing the horn button , or (b) pressing the Sanding button ,(c) moving the Throttle /Brake handle by atleast 3%.
      Also the almost continuous horn is due to the number of manned and unmanned railway gates that you can see...It is mandatory to sound a long whistle when approaching gates...( you can see the yellow board with the letters W / L ) indicating long whistle for the gates.
      Finally our wonderful people walking on the tracks or close to the tracks as if walking in a park !!!!

      @@rajarams5988 it annoys the crap out of me. We penalise our loco pilots with having to focus on inane alertness exercises and subjecting them to the incessant honking (sounds nice if you're railfanning, not so much when used constantly), because of the sheer magnitude of stupidity displayed by the morons who waltz about as if high speed rail lines were a theme park. Not to mention, this is also one of the primary reasons why we have the infrastructure and capability to run trains at 200km/h, but never do.

    great notching, coasting , horns etc.And the constant rattling at 111 kmph,,,,just amazing........i like EMD horns and the aerodynamic sounds. Negative is an ugly duckling look . Now plenty of WDP4Ds with dual cabs and better visibility are rolled out by DLW.

    It is necessary and most important that the Loco pilot's cabin has to establish to the front portion completely so that he can get a complete vision of the route. Now it is terribly getting a very partial view of the track to the pilot which leads to big disasters.

      The pilot only needs to see the signals, which he can see from the back as well (although it's difficult). Steam Engine bhi aise hi tha and most diesel engines of that time are like that. Not just in India but also around the world.
      Also note the engine is reversed here. This same engine has a forward facing view if the loco is reversed.

    I'll say one thing.Those two guys didn't mind taking that rig down the track! They'd have to have two people for one to work the horn and one to keep the throttle hammered and they'd have to run wide open to keep enough air built up to run the horn! Remind me to just watch this train go past if I'm ever in India.

    • @AjayMenonPHOTOARTIST
      @AjayMenonPHOTOARTIST 8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      +Ashish Diggi A digital camera cannot 'see' and show what a human eye can see. There was too much contrast, a little greenery and the white sky means is too much lighting conditions for the camera to show what the human eye would usually see (this is why if the camera were to focus on the sky, the greenery would appear dark if it focuses on the greenspace, the white sky would appear overexposed. Human can of course see the better of the two in most conditions. Also, the loco pilot has to worry for one side of the track.
