As a US Navy sailor that is burdened with procedures and micromanaging seeing an entire engineroom come online within minutes and done by 1 person makes me both jealous and happy.
If you have an cold ship you have to do a whole procedure. Me as an mechanic on research vessels has to do an whole procedure if an engine hasn’t run in a week
I used to work overlooking a bulk goods port. Once they had an Oliver Hazard Perry class visit. Was quite different. The bulk carriers would slowly trail black smoke on start up, hours before leaving. The frigate belched white smoke and left within half an hour.
At 1:18 I love hearing the generator as it comes under load… The RPM stays the same, you just hear the turbo spooling up more, the more load is applied
I actually love that it’s just a big ol’ turbo diesel out of a Scania truck sitting there as a generator, but compared to the diesels running the propellors it’s tiny, even though it’s probably upwards of a 7 or 8 litre engine
+DraGma. Ships in the UK have similar standards on most of their ships. I was once called to a chartered Greek car ferry and simply could not believe what I was seeing. At first, I thought that the floor was flooded, but I soon discovered that I was walking around in half an inch of oil, fuel and rust.
I do tech service work on various marine vessels. Out of all the years I've been doing it, the only ones who ever tried to stiff us on payment was a Greek owned and operated vessel. The vessel operators agreed to pay in Master's cash based on an estimate. I completed the job, submitted the report to the Captain for acceptance and payment, Captain claims that he cannot pay in Master's cash for the job completed, which came in under estimate. We are talking a couple thousand dollars here. It came to threatening to go to the bridge and undo the work that I had done, and that the Coast Guard would be contacted and notified that the vessel was not able to operate in US waters. Suddenly the Captain disappears into his state room and returns with cash in hand to the exact amount specified.

There are two different worlds, one holds the people always complaining and all the movie stars and the football hotshots, and the other holds people who work relentlessly and silently everyday so that the former gets a roof to live under with safety and security and opulence.
I am doubly amazed because today I watched videos of industrial sized steam engines that powered factories and locomotives. Those videos led me to this one.

I KNOW I'M A FEW YEARS LATE HERE but I just discovered this channel today. For anyone interested the engine rooms of old, like the 40's & 50's were nothing like this and the word "safety" was no where to be found. Hell, you almost couldn't breathe down there. Thank God for change!

Hearing the generator increase output as the fans start up has me wandering how many amps those fans must be pulling
About tree-fiddy
The subtitles say it is a 250 hp motor. That is 186 kw.
Thats how much horsepower the generator can output peak, its not on limiter, but those extraction/feeder fans must be pulling and considerable amount of amps to make it ramp up like that.
