Hey there, I can really recommend you to watch "The Pianist". It portraits the life in the ghettos of Warsaw during WWII really well and shows how musicians are sometimes more likely to survive such horrible times due to their talent. The movie is based on a real story and like "Schindlers Liste", chances are high that there might be someone chopping onions nearby in the end:)

You should try to watch Paths of Glory if you get a chance. You were saying how it's a shame there aren't more good WW1 movies up there with 1917. Paths of Glory I think really nails the vibe of how war and the disconnect between the grunts / higher command makes for an inseparable gulf. Not to mention it uniquely takes the pov of the French army during WW1. Something we don't see often despite a lion's share of the war being lifted by them.
Also it's an interesting look into Kubrick during his earlier more workman years.
So Paths of Glory, 1917, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Galipoli, All Quiet on the Western Front makes my list of WW1 (or highly WW1 related) war movies that are worth the watch. (Blue Max and the Grand Illusion are on the list of supposedly very good that I haven't watched yet)

I think Full Metal Jacket is a masterpiece consistently. You're right in that it's two different movies, the first one being about preparation for war, the second being about war itself. I've never seen another movie potray the crudeness and vulgarity of the common soldier more accurately (except maybe the Dirty Dozen), and its potrayal of war as farcial insanity rather than glorious fighting is just brilliant to me

If you're visiting Major War Sites, I have a rather unknown one that's pretty cool.
    -Fort Stevens in Oregon.
While this fort seems fairly ordinary, it's the site of the ONLY World War 2 Battle to take place on American Soil. The Japanese submarine I-25 launched a bombardment against the fort, which guarded the Pacific entrance to the Columbia River. The Japanese bombardment caused very little damage due to the Base Commander ordering a blackout and ordering his men to hold their fire. Eventually, the sub was spotted by some civilian aircraft on a training flight, and US fighters exchanged fire with the sub and forced it to withdraw. Despite no casualties to either side and the only real damage being done to a small baseball field that had received the majority of Japanese shells, the attack helped spark the "West Coast Invasion Scare of 1942".

I want to say this about Gibson. He may not make (Or be apart of) the most accurate movies, but that man could tell a story.
As for Saving Private Ryan, it is not a true story, but it is historically authentic. It certainly feels like it takes place in Normandy in June 1944. The rescue mission would probably never have happened, but it does feel like it was there.

Full Metal Jacket most accurately depicts one of the most overused lines in the Marine Corps, “You think you effing made it?”
Boot camp is only a taste of what is too come and yet while you are in it you think it is everything. It lull’s you into a false sense of security. It is so awful, how can anything be worse? But in reality it is a short 13 weeks, basically a vacation, and the easiest thing a Marine (combat arms) will ever complete. I appreciate that from FMJ.

I suggest you check out The Forgotten Battle. It is about the Battle of the Scheldt. They really paint a good picture of the island of Walcheren at the time, and the story of the Dutch youth fighting on the German side was harrowing, and sobering to watch. I watched it back to back with 1917, a film I thought was a bit underwhelming. Unrealistic transitions between scenes...especially at the burning city. All of the shooting started conveniently after the protagonist was dropped off by that army unit and he crossed the obstacle into the city. Cinematography was good though. Looked pretty.
Also, as a Dutchman, Admiral (Michiel de Ruyter) was a good watch.

I think the term "war film" is sightly vague. Hence there are alot of movies that could have been included in that list. Am not sure why but I find that generally my favourite movies are war films. I adore so many of the films listed. I will throw in a unordinary recommendation which I understand might not be very suitable for international audience as it is a 5h Polish Epic but it is one of my favourite movies. "The Deluge" or "Potop" is a masterpiece. A shorter but similar movie which is a total delight to watch is "With fire and sword" by the same director. They are both based on Henryk Sienkiewicz Books set in 16/17th centuary, one covers Swedish invasion and the other Cossack uprising.
    Thanks for the video.

Hacksaw Ridge was ok in my opinion. I like Andrew Garfield as an actor, and I liked his performance. But it was a little bit of a melodrama for my liking. It sort of undermines Dawson's pacifism when he's being defended by an injured soldier he's dragging shooting a machine gun rifle.

Hard disagree on The Hurt Locker. It's drummed up to be a psychological thriller or whatever but I just found it to be a really good slow burner more than anything. The plot felt organic and following a bomb squad around countless life and death situations made it uniquely tense; especially in how high the stakes feel whilst defusing some of those IEDs. It also opened the writing and story up to that Catch-22 esque situation of countless missions with seemingly no end and the psychological toll that impinges on a squad. Loved the cinematography although it felt a bit artsy at times. But still texturally rich. Really enjoyed the cavalier acting from Jeremy Renner and even cameo performances like Guy Pearce. Also there's so much bad writing with war films and at least The Hurt Locker has something complex or not entirely centred around "the mission", yknow. It felt like a journey without a set destination, as opposed to absolute crap like 13 hours which is just Bay Hollywoodisms stretched over what actually felt like 13 hours, with the most one dimensional, trash writing and characterization you could ever imagine. There is no comparison
