Actually, Union Flag vs. Union Jack has largely been settled by one of our national institutes; they can't actually tell when the term "union jack flown at sea" bit came from, but they have confirmed that the terms "Union Flag" and "Union Jack" are both valid and interchangeable no matter whether they are flown on land or at sea.
Yup. The Flag Institute made their determination in 2013, but it’s taking some time to percolate out to everyone who learned in school that “it’s only a Jack if it’s on a ship”.
There was an episode of Doctor Who in 2006 (The Idiot's Lantern) which made a big deal of the distinction. I suspect that was the first most people outside the UK heard of the difference.
also, he were not found by the british and that is not the reason for the jack, us kanaka maoli found the islands, the jack was a gift that would represent foreign alliance, the 8 stripes yes were to represent the eight islands and were not needed to align with the jack since it was not about looks it was about representation. the red white and blue had a different tint actually, wit the red and blue being a little bit darker, but those 3 colors were to represent being friendly with britain and america when they were in battle. it was a brilliant plan by mo'i kamehameha to make sure that none of their conflicts happened on the island. as I said the blue and red were a darker tint, but when we were overthrown america changed that shading to match them which is honestly national disrespect
My opinion on flags is this: if you can recognize it waving in the battlefield, it is a good design. That gets difficult when there are 50 states though…
That’s actually a great criterion. In the heat of battle, especially the naval ones, the flag needs to be recognised at a distance to avoid friendly fire. If it passes that standard, it would also look good fluttering on a flagpole from afar.
@@matthewkreps3352 true, but they are spread out across the globe. The 50 states are all in one area, and with some of them being so similar it presents issues.
The “moon” on the flag of South Carolina is actually a gorget; a crescent shaped accessory worn around the neck of Revolutionary officers. Palmetto trees were used for fortifications during battle the of Sullivan’s Island (June 28, 1776) because of their ability to absorb hits from cannon balls.
@@Justanotherconsumer also, some people say it’s the comes from the gorget worn on soldiers’ caps so maybe that explains the tilt. Either way it isn’t a moon.
We Marylanders LOVE our flag. I literally have masks that I bought during COVID with the flag and get so many people asking me where I got them. We might be second to Colorado to putting our flag on everything. The disrespect is hurtful. It definitely stands out and you can see it at a distance. I don't care what you all say - S Tier for MD!!
It’s funny, Utah changed our flag about a week or two before his video came out, so yeah it’s really recent, and really good! Hopefully it incentivizes others to also redesign their flags!
I would have preferred the new Utah flag to have had orange on the bottom rather than red, but I cant complain with the result! As a native child of Utah (though I haven't lived there for many years), I'm glad we finally have a respectable state symbol.
I'm pretty sure Massachusetts is currently doing a redesign of their flag but it's been going on for over a year now and they still haven't chosen finalists.
As a Mississippian, it made me so glad to hear you like our new flag! I really love it, most especially because I can now show state pride without looking... well, you know. Great content as always, by the way!
It has no personality and is the same as the others that have changed. What happen to being rebellious? instead now you have conformity to the "taken as law" North American Vexillological Association "rules" for flag making. All of them look very samie just a star, mountain, water, random angle, etc, etc.. And now its been changed to the most stale 3 color flag possible. FF
As a native Washingtonian, I fully agree with and got a great laugh from Grey's roasting of our flag. "A flag is not money" is the best insult he could have possibly given. That said, when it finally gets a redesign I desperately want the green to stay. It's a fantastic shade, uniquely ours, and has SO many good colors to match with it for symbols. My two favorite ideas are Mt. St. Helens/a tripeak for Helens, Adams, and Rainier/a range for the Cascades, all in white; or a brown outlined tree, for our long lumber industry history and MASSIVE public forest lands. Hell, I'd take the profile of Washington we use for our state highway signs over the seal, at least it would fall into all the rules of a good flag then. Just not a red apple. No Christmas colors please.
Indeed, that is the new flag of Utah you saw! I recall it did not fly for long on the news, but I will say it is rather unique! The flag just feels very futuristic and space-like, even if all of it references what's in that state.
Technically, although the flag change has been signed into law, it doesn't take effect until March 9, 2024. The current flag is a variant of the state seal (which includes the word "UTAH") on a blue background, and thus terrible.
As an Argentine, I'm glad to know our flag passes the test. The roast to Brazil's is a bonus 👍 Also, Texans hijacking Chile's flag because Unicode has only country flags is peak Texas.
Only thing that bothers me about the Argentine flag is the sun in the middle, which is a bit too detailed and messy. Seems like sometimes it’s just omitted and the blue and white are all that’s there. Only other complaint I’d have is that the light blue isn’t enough of a contrast to the white, but that’s rarely an issue. As a flag design it is still really good. As an American, our flag is… a bit of a disaster. It’s supposed to be a flag, not a history lesson!
@@Justanotherconsumer Two and tri color flags are great. Easy to identify and easy to design outfits for national teams. During the World Cup I kept mixing up the England and USA teams, because they both have white jerseys.
Although flags aren't heraldry, I think the "should be recognizable at a distance" rule means that the heraldic rule of tincture is still pretty applicable - no metals (silver/white and yellow/gold) next to eachother, and no colors (red, blue, green, black, purple) next to eachother.
FYI, the bear on the California Republic flag was hunted to extinction, so it makes sense it looks scared (California grizzly). I do think the love for the New California Republic flag from the game Fallout New Vegas shows the California Republic flag is not so badly designed.
SC flag stands for strength and courage. The palmetto is because they build forts out of them and the wood was bendable to resist canons (strength) the the moon is actually a neck guard (courage) from the War of Independence
Although Cook did visit Hawaii, the Hawaiian flag became what it is because of a Scottish captain. A Red Ensign with the Union Jack was given to Kamehameha I by Captain George Vancouver in 1793, who previously visited with Captain Cook in 1778-1779. However, Ireland wasn't part of the UK until 1801, so this specific ensign didn't become the current Hawaiian flag. So what did? Well, Scottish captain Alexander Adams of the British East India Company! The current flag was created by him as part of a China trip in 1817. At this time, he was part of the Hawaiian Navy. On his way to China, while stopping on Kaua'i for supplies, he gave Kaumualiʻi (last supreme ruler of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau) an ensign to raise at the port, as Kaumuali'i only had the Russian flag left behind from a failed Russian colony. The ship on the New Hampshire seal is the frigate USS Raleigh. The Raleigh was one of the first 13 warships sponsored by the Continental Congress for a new American navy, built in 1776, at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, although the shipyard is on Badger's Island in neighboring Kittery, Maine rather than Portsmouth, NH. On September 25, 1778, it was sailing to Portsmouth, NH when two British ships pursued it. Eventually the British captured it, refloated Raleigh at high tide on the 28th, and after repairs, commissioned her into the Royal Navy as HMS Raleigh. The ship took part in the capture of Charleston and was decommissioned in Portsmouth, England in June 1781.
As a Californian, I do enjoy our flag quite a bit, but with roots from Ohio (Cincinnati) Ohio's flag is 👌🏼. As always great video and got a good laugh out this one!
There's a reason the bear on the California state flag is designed like that: While the flag was adopted in 1911, until 1953 the image of the bear varied depending on the flag manufacturer, and was finally standardized based on an image of Monarch. This image was standardized based on an 1855 watercolor by Charles Christian Nahl. Monarch isn't just any bear, it's a California grizzly bear which is an extinct subspecies. Monarch was the last California grizzly bear in captivity. After it was captured in 1889, the bear was subsequently moved to Woodwards Gardens in San Francisco, and then to the zoo at Golden Gate Park. After the bear's death in 1911, it was mounted and preserved at the Academy of Sciences at Golden Gate Park. And agreed about New Mexico's flag! The red and yellow were chosen because of the Coronela flag of the Spanish Tercios Morados Viejos Tercios division, but I agree that the two colors are fitting for New Mexico's scenery. The sacred Zia symbol itself has a lot of meaning. Four is the sacred number of Zia, and the figure is composed of a circle from which four points radiate. The sacred number is embodied in the earth with its four main directions; in the year with its four seasons; in the day, with sunrise, noon, evening and night; in life, with its four divisions (childhood, youth, adulthood and old age). To the Zia, everything is bound together in a circle of life, without beginning, without end.
Honestly, I think Californian flag ok. Just lose the name, simplify bear and grass, then it's pretty much S tier. Or potentially even lose the grass, other option would be to have green stripe on top of the red one if you want to keep the green.
My wife and I both watched CGP's video and then watched your reaction (when it first came out). If anything watching your video afterward just enhanced our appreciation of the original video.
Congrats on defending your channel. This is a good video and, had Grey not handled things this way, this reaction would have put me on to his channel! I've discover so many new channels through reactions. I watched one of his videos and it was good but now i have a bad taste in my mouth with him
CGP Grey was in the right though. VTH didn't reach out to him before using his content, why should CGP reach out to him to get it taken down? Reaction content is a substitute for the original video, the original creator can put dozens of hours into working on something just for a reactor to react to it, edit it and upload it in less than an hour.
@@robertmonroe7930 Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s moral. And also a copyright strike was put on VTH’s channel. That wasn’t backed up with a lawsuit, but that’s because those are expensive and CGP Grey didn’t want to waste money on something like this. And it is a replacement because someone could watch this video and then they have watched all of CGP Grey’s video inside this one. It’s not a full replacement, people can still go to the original video, but it is still somewhat a substitute for the original video. Also, the number of people going to the original video will be very low.
Something Interesting about New Mexicos flag is that the Zia symbol also has meaning attached to its “rays” leaving the center , the four directions , four stages of life , the four seasons, and four parts of the day , so the meaning of it is a bit more complex!
Another flag with two sides is Paraguay! The obverse of the flag shows the national coat of arms, while the reverse shows the seal of the treasury. And on the Saudi Arabian flag, because it features the shahada, an Islamic creed, it has identical obverse and reverse sides, to ensure the shahada reads correctly, from right to left, from either side. The South Carolina flag is based off the Moultrie flag. In 1775, Colonel William Moultrie was asked by the Revolutionary Council of Safety to design a flag for the South Carolina troops to use during the American Revolutionary War. Moultrie's design had the blue of the militia's uniforms and a crescent taken from their cap insignia. It was first flown at Fort Johnson in Charleston County. This flag was famously flown in the defense of a new fortress on Sullivan's Island when Moultrie faced off against a British fleet that had not lost a battle in a century. In the 16-hour battle on June 28, 1776, the flag was shot down, but Sergeant William Jasper ran out into the open, raising it and rallying the troops until it could be mounted again. This gesture was considered to be so heroic, saving Charleston from conquest for four years. The palmetto was added in 1861, also a reference to Moultrie's defense of Sullivan's Island as the fortress he had constructed had survived largely because the palmettos, laid over sand walls, were able to withstand British cannon.
In fourth grade, we had to each write a report on a state. My assigned state was Maryland, which would've been fine if not for the fact that we had to draw the flag as well. I traded with a classmate who was actually from Maryland, and I got the much easier Alabama.
As a Utahn, I wholeheartedly embrace the new design--sucks that we have to wait almost a year before it's official. What makes it easy is the fact that the State Seal is still up, hater seem to be missing that. The one thing about the Illinois flag is that I don't see the art as necessarily grade school. It has the feel of European medieval art.
I wanted to post this on his video comments, but I actually kind of like the California flag. Yes it breaches the rules, but to be honest, I still think it is aesthetically pleasing. Also I love Colorado's flag, it's literally top 5 for me. I didn't notice the C and it works well.
@@theredhunter4997 CGP Grey filed two copyright strikes against VTH for two prior videos he did about CGP videos. Both strikes were eventually overturned on appeal. The blue not just represents the Alaskan sky, but also the forget-me-not, its official flower! And speaking of Alaskan Natives: An Alaskan Native designed the state flag! Thirty-two years before Alaska became a state, a territorial flag contest was held for Alaskan children from seventh grade to twelfth grade. In 1927, the contest committee chose Benny Benson's design. Benny Benson was a Qawalangin (Fox Islander) Unangan who was a fourteen-year-old orphan living at the Jesse Lee Home for Children in Seward at the time of the contest. His design was chosen over 700 others, and he won a thousand dollars which he used to enroll in the Hemphill Diesel Engineering School for Diesel engine repair. And the thing about the Indiana flag having its name on its flag: To commemorate the state's 1916 centennial anniversary, the Indiana General Assembly issued a resolution to adopt a new state flag. More than two hundred submissions were received and examined by the Society before a winner was selected. The entry created by Paul Hadley of Mooresville was ultimately chosen as the winner of the contest. However, when it was selected as the state's official banner in May 1917, the legislature made a change to it by adding the word Indiana. So it originally didn't have it! The state banner was later renamed the state's flag in a new statute passed in 1955.
This is a massive win for the whole history community on TH-cam. It shows that we won't put up with toxicity and abuse of power. Super proud of everyone for showing their support
Marylander here. I’d argue that we’re up there with Colorado in terms of seeing the flag everywhere especially with apparel. I love the flag and nobody will ever mistake it for any other state!
Utah's flag just came out new yeah. Massachusetts is redesigning ours as well, and seeing the other two recent ones it gives me hope that we'll end up with something MUCH better.
Washington has so many easy symbols to run to. A cherry tree would be amazing, for the wink and a nod to the story about George but also because, well, we grow a lot of cherries here. The Evergreen State having a pine tree on the flag would also obviously work. A forest flag, maybe on a field of gray to lampoon our constant overcast skies. So much that could be done. At least it’s green?
Having listened in on some of the Massachusetts design meetings, I'm concerned, primarily because it's a state seal re-design, not specifically a flag re-design. I dread that we're going to end up with an even more complicated "seal on a bedsheet".
Hi Chris, I'm a teenager from Romania and I really love your work and appreciate your knowledge, like it's amazing how many things you know about history. I really like your historic sites series and you are inspiring me to make my own historic war sites series, but from my country, Romania. And one last thing if you don't mind, a question, how do you make your research about some specific battle or site, where you find all the information? Thanks anticipated and once again I really love your work ❤
Hi TheNinguin, actual Romanian researcher here. It really depends on what region and which war you want to cover. My general recommendation is to always go to university libraries and check the books there, particularly Istoria Românilor - Academia Română, Vol. VII-IX in order to have a broad outlook from which to start your research. It also really matters where you're from. If you're in Bucharest, you'll have a much easier time getting the books you need at BCUB. If you're in Timişoara, Cluj or Iaşi, you'll have good books to work with. If you're in a place like Târgovişte, your chances will start to drop.
@@EmpressMermaid Thanks very much. ❤ I'm actually really hyped to make some videos about romanian history, but also a bit scare cuz I'm new to this 😅 but really looking forward to learning more. I really want to put in the effort to make some good research and some good videos even tho I don't really have the best tools 😅
I was born in Mississippi, lived in Maryland briefly as a child, before spending most of my life in South Carolina. I’m pretty happy with Mississippi’s new flag. I do think he was a little to harsh on SC’s flag, although I can kinda see the argument that the Palmetto is too detailed. However, South Carolinians LOVE this flag and will probably hunt anyone down who disagrees with them. However, my favorite flag will always be Maryland’s flag. It is so overdetailed and obnoxious, it just makes it incredible. I do like the unique blending of colors, as well. It’s also the only state flag that would look cool hanging out of a castle, so that’s nice. I also love the fact the the University of Maryland has an alternative home football uniform based off this flag that looks hideous. I love it! Now that I’ve stated my opinion, please excuse me while I make a run from all of the South Carolinians coming to take my South Carolina card away for liking another state’s flag more than ours.
I’m a Marylander who moved to Mississippi. When they were redesigning Mississippi’s flag I asked someone on the committee to give us something that everyone in the state can be proud of, like Maryland. It’s everywhere. The new MS flag does that, and you see it more and more, though I can’t imagine it becoming sportswear or pajama bottoms. BTW that gold star at the top of Mississippi’s flag is for the indigenous tribes.
It's amazing how expressive the little characters he draws are. It may sound dumb, but I'm a little sad each time he's harsh to one of the little girls-states proudly presenting her flag ! ahah
Same, feels like a professor being harsh with elementary schoolers. This video has a more lively animation than usual for him and the girl state design where top tier, Ohio was very wholesome XD
It should be noted that I don’t think he’s done the visuals for his videos in years now. It was when he hired that editor that the videos also became more dynamic in their visuals.
I'm going to rewatch this as my way of supporting you Chris, because I love your reactions even if I've been soured in my opinion of CGP Grey. And I agree with your decision to leave these up. Let them stand as a testament to your victory. ... And as a side note, it is really just _so_ sad, because objectively speaking CGP Grey does make amazing content, and it would have been great to see you react more of it. Prior to this incident I would have called myself a fan of his, but now, while he still may make good quality content, his behavior in this has just forever changed my opinion of him and affected my ability to watch his videos ☹️
The word "fan" came from the era of the "Beetles", and it's short for "fanatic". That's what all those girls, screaming their heads off in the presence of the Beetles were - fanatics.Which is why you should never be a "fan" of anyone or anything. To be a fan means to be a brainless chimp. Don't be. As for CGP - He's always tried to present himself as "super-duper nice". And people who do that are almost always "super-duper not." Combine it with his videos, where his self-insert characters are almost always in positions of power, and look down on the "peasantry" with the "I'm an adult and you're children" attitude, and you start getting a clear picture of the guy.
@@VG-fk6nk I'm aware of the origin of the word 'fan'. And while that may be where the word _comes_ from, the word has evolved in the present-day lexicon. When people use it to refer to themselves or others, they usually just use the word to mean 'I enjoy/support this person/thing and what they do'. So when people say: 'I'm a fan of such-and-such TV show' or 'I'm a fan of so-and-so artist's artwork' ...it doesn't necessarily or even usually mean that they are a mindless _fanatic_ about it, it simply means that they enjoy this person/place/thing.
@@otnat2094 Yes, the watering down of language. Where "awesome" once meant "awe inspiring; truly amazing", now it means "oh, that's mildly entertaining and briefly enjoyable". Be the language watered down as it may, words still have meaning. To call one's self a "fanatic", just because it's normalized to be one, to be a brainless chimp - it's just sad and self-denegrading. But, if that's the way you want it to be for you, fine by me. It truly is "awesome"...
@@VG-fk6nk * Sigh * 🙄 Look, this is the last comment I'm going to make. My message started out as simply expressing support for Chris and sadness that CGP Grey has soured his reputation in the minds of many people who were fa- .....who _supported_ him (there is that better) Yet you chose to pick up a proverbial sword and turn it into a battle in your one-man quest to return words to their original meaning in the minds of the general public. Well this is not a fight I intended to start nor one do I intend to participate in any further. So if it makes you feel better for me to say "Fine, you win, the word 'fan' should be eliminated from the English language, and I'm a brainless chimp"... ...very well then. You win. You win the internet today. Congratulations on besting me good sir. 🙄

Grey did use to be a schoolteacher (or still is one?) So it's a very fitting thematic choice. And you should definitely react to more of his stuff, it's excellent and presented in a really unique and gripping way
As someone living in Utah I actually got to vote on one of the preliminary flag designs as they needed a way to sort out the thousand odd potential flag designs. I for one voted on one that looked something like the German naval flag except it was gold blue with a bee hive in the center. And as an aside almost every flag design had a bee hive some where on it.
In Schleswig-Holstein in Germany, our official state flag is a simple tricolor, but nobody ever uses it. The one you always see everywhere is actually the state government flag, which has the coat of arms on it. But the coat of arms is very simple and greatly stylized, and combines the medieval coat of arms of the Duchy of Schleswig and the Duchy of Holstein, which were historically used to easily identify soldiers and ships from a distance, so it's not nearly as busy as a seal. I think it passes the A Child Can Draw It test and it both looks so much better and much more meaningful than the plain tricolor. (Biased A- tier.)
🎶 Schleswig-Holstein meerumschlungen... 🎶 Also tf you mean the version with the coat of arms isn't our flag?! I mean I was born and raised NEAR the SH/Hamburg border but still in SH. I should know this.
I'm even more sad about the whole situation after watching this reaction because it seems like Chris genuinely enjoyed watching this video. I'm glad you were able to get the strike removed.
Now that I'm watching your reaction, I'm noticing more details of the state students that I hadn't before. Minnesota's and Utah's blond hair was obvious, but I mean things like: -Most of their pigtails curl up at the ends, but not New Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, or Oklahoma. Utah's pigtails are also straighter than most, but not as pin-straight as the other four I listed. -Maryland's hair bows are red and yellow, which isn't incorrect and is certainly simpler to draw, but as a Marylander myself, I know those bows should have the entire flag pattern on them. 😂
I don’t understand how people can be mad at cgp grey vth didn’t even ask for permission to use his content. It’s ridiculous that people can be so mad at him considering it’s literally his content with random shit added on. He spent months on it. Reactors should know that what they do is dangerous and they should stop it’s just stealing content.
@@Icy609 VTH believed his work is fair use. He doesnt need to ask every time. The more annoying thing is the fact that this stemmed from a misunderstanding and Grey reaching for the nuclear option first.
@@polychromatizen If he does go for the "nuclear option" then it puts off other reactors who are essentially stealing his content. He should ask because it is not his thing to re-upload with commentary.
@@Icy609 I don't understand how you and 8 other people can like that take, I am guessing double digit iq? Or is it a lack of education on both legality and ethics? The reason grey backed down is because he IS legally and morally wrong, you and @britbot6661 (assuming briefly he is human not a bot) need to do more research on this topic.
@VolcanoIcy People shouldn’t be mad at him for just not wanting people to react to his videos, but you can think it’s unethical to put a copyright strike on a channel before simply sending an email kindly asking VTH to take the video down. What’s even worse is when the copyright strike is appealed and Grey responded by copyrighting another video five minutes later. If the video wasn’t fair use, it wouldn’t be up now. It is, Grey couldn’t or wouldn’t prove anything. Sure this flag one is probably much less transformative than some of VTH other reactions, including the one to the Kings and Queens video which more than tripled the original runtime with facts about the monarchy, but that video, created with literal years of research on that topic is sadly gone forever because VTH had to take it down because he was afraid it would be a third strike which would delete his channel. No TH-camr should have their channel maliciously hit with false strikes, especially from a fellow creator. VTH has mentioned that Knowing Better told him that he didn’t like reaction videos, so he doesn’t react to his videos. The Hasan, Sniperwolfs, xQcs and other streamers probably aren’t meeting fair use thresholds, but that doesn’t mean that any reaction channel needs to be eliminated. I lost all respect for Grey after this, and the corporate direction his channel took with the whole comments thing and plastering of members only stuff. I’m okay with having that stuff and perks, but he is a little excessive. That’s all besides the point though. I just think of Grey doesn’t like reactions he could have handled this better.
If a copyright strike isn't backed up with legal action then after 10 days it gets removed. Grey likely knew this, so his reaction would be literally nothing.
The fact that he gave bonus points to Texas and Alaska for how much Texans and Alaskans love their flags but didn’t give Colorado bonus points for *literally the exact same thing* is criminal
The flag of the state of Colorado does not just have the letter "c," but also the letter "o" In a beautiful stylized form, which actually harkens back to the meaning of the word Colorado. It's awesome
@@Bybop34 Cool, I hadn’t seen it before. The Denver flag captures the essence of CO better; it even makes the yellow work. Something like that may have earned at least B tier.
“ oh I did put Maryland in S tier “ 😎… you know you love it Chris. Very symbolic religiously as well. Being from and living here currently it is on EVERYTHING and is EVERYWHERE. I cannot go one day without seeming on a car, hat, shirt, football helmet, jersey, etc… and mostly multiple of those in a single day. Look a UMD’s helmets/jerseys
That is indeed a new Utah flag. They adopted in March (2023). So much better than seal on blue. Also, as a person who has lived in both Colorado and Texas, I would say Texans are a little more about their flag than Coloradans.
The comment on Minnesota with the suggestion of a nordic cross is a good one. The design is so easy and nice to look at with the correct color combinations, best of which is the blue cross on white, not at all biased.
NY State flag would actually be better as a "I♥NY" Edit: After seeing all these, I think Arizona should be S tier. That copper star really stands alone. Its not a bad set of colors honestly, I'd wear a red and yellow beanie with a orange star on it. A little blue for trim and you have a nice hat representing that state.
Really, for most of the state flags, just having the state postal abbreviation in huge letters would be easier to distinguish at a distance than the seals.
Glad you did this. I think Colorado is cool next to Maryland but as a Nevadan, I feel our flag is elegant . Dont judge me 😅. Keep up the great work, Chris. 👍👏
Canada has one of the best flags, period. Simple, distinctive, and a clear symbol. Easy to reduce for a roundel or naval jack or to incorporate into other designs. Clearly follows the rule of tincture too for high contrast between the colors in the design elements, and not so much white that it could be confused for surrender. Looking at you. Stainless Banner… though maybe that was appropriate.
Just a note about Kentucky: its seal (depicted on its flag) in fact predates the Civil War. Those figures are a pioneer and a statesman, not a Union and Confederate soldier, while the motto (though it could easily apply to the Civil War) was adopted in 1792.
The funny thing with Hawaii's flag is that the king of Hawaii just saw that flags had the union jack on them so he took it and wanted to have the most stripes so that's what became the flag and its epic
Isn't it great how even if we disagreed with this video not being copyright, we'd still be able to comment that fact in Chris's comment section? Better than some channels here on TH-cam
Something that came to my mind while watching this is that I'm pretty sure there are major league sports teams that do a better job of designing state flags than the states themselves. For example, the New York Rangers have an alternative logo with the head of the Statue of Liberty that would have been perfect on a state flag. I also think that the Minnesota Wild logo could have worked as a state flag.
The Maryland flag is S tier because of three reasons 1) it is historical combining lord Calvert and the Crosslands family crests - that is those crest that are linked to Lord Baltimore (yes the big city in the state not the capital which is Annapolis). 2) Maryland is one of the states ripped apart in the civil War - the union troops used gold and black colors and the southern used red and white. 3) It is bold and has a never back down quality. Sorta a thing for us being you know bombs bursting and all… we don’t back down and to this day we always have to fight even if it is for this flag getting some respect!
I was having a bad day. It is better now. Born in California, I just grew up in love with the flag, but will acknowledge the flaws. Get the name off and we got a solid flag. Now as a resident of the Commonwealth of Kentucky… it’s OK, I agree the blue background just seems to blur with the others AND we gotta have our name on it. Again. It can be improved though. Hey Chris, I know I’m not the first nor will I be the last to comment this, but we Marylanders LOVE our flag and give Colorado a run for its money on being the most prideful for our state flags. I can’t speak for others but I have mugs, t-shirts, and of course flags with the Maryland design and it has a really cool history when you research it more too, dating back to the Civil War. It may be the most likely to induce a seizure on the viewer but it is an easy S tier for me lol.
I don’t know if this guy’s ever been to MD or TX. I lived in CO (live in MD now)-trust me, no one comes close to MD and TX for flag pride. CO flag ubiquity is meh in comparison.
Utah just recently changed their flag. A lot of Utahns I knew thought there were better things to spend time and money on than updating our the flag, but out of the options that were polled, the new one is really good. Glad Utah’s Congress approved the new flag in time for CGP Grey’s video. The star on Utah’s new flag was going to be 8 sided to represent the indigenous tribes of Utah, but there were last minute complaints that it looked too much like an asterisk, and that it suggested treating Native Americans as a footnote of US history, so they changed it.
I can not stress enough how his americapox and his zebras versus horses would be great as well as his Supreme Court shenanigans one This one was fun too
I'm British, but spent about 6 months in NM as a kid, and always remembered the flag. Years later I lived in VA, and had no clue what the flag looked like!
That's some biased justice... He used someone else's content without permission. The original had dozens of hours of work go into it, while the reaction had at most a few hours.
I rewatched this video because I didn't remember how it was from watching it the first time. But you definitely added a lot of context in this reaction. Maybe not as much as your normal videos because it wasn't a strictly historical video, but definitely enough to be considered fair use IMO.
It came from the the fact that a jack literally is a flag flown from a jackstaff. It can't get any more tautologically simple than that.
This is correct, thank you
There was an episode of Doctor Who in 2006 (The Idiot's Lantern) which made a big deal of the distinction.

Ain't a pennant a triangle? Ohio flag is a pentagon
Regarding 50 state difficulty, there's at least 190 countries in the world.
@@matthewkreps3352 true, but they are spread out across the globe. The 50 states are all in one area, and with some of them being so similar it presents issues.
There's no confusing a NCR soldiers with those of Caesar's Legion.
That's the "beauty" (as it were) of civil wars.
The angle is weird, a gorget should be points up.
@@Justanotherconsumer I know but that’s how they designed it lol 🤷♂️
@@Justanotherconsumer also, some people say it’s the comes from the gorget worn on soldiers’ caps so maybe that explains the tilt. Either way it isn’t a moon.
This means the "sister flags" he suggests in the video may not be such a great idea after all (because it relies on it being a crescent moon).
It also comes from the “Moultrie Flag” or “Liberty Flag” flown during the war
What a nice video! This will certainly not spark any controversy at all.

It’s funny, Utah changed our flag about a week or two before his video came out, so yeah it’s really recent, and really good! Hopefully it incentivizes others to also redesign their flags!
I can only applaud you for such an inspired choice.
Didn't some group try to stop the change or something?
I would have preferred the new Utah flag to have had orange on the bottom rather than red, but I cant complain with the result! As a native child of Utah (though I haven't lived there for many years), I'm glad we finally have a respectable state symbol.
I'm pretty sure Massachusetts is currently doing a redesign of their flag but it's been going on for over a year now and they still haven't chosen finalists.

i thought it was underrated at C!
It's definitely an improvement, though the Mosquito Flag was cuter. And originally made it to the semi-finals.
FF
I really like the new design. The magnolia is distinctive

In 10 years, though, the infographic flag trend is going to look horribly dated when some new trend becomes the hotness.
Technically, although the flag change has been signed into law, it doesn't take effect until March 9, 2024. The current flag is a variant of the state seal (which includes the word "UTAH") on a blue background, and thus terrible.
As an Argentine, I'm glad to know our flag passes the test. The roast to Brazil's is a bonus 👍
Also, Texans hijacking Chile's flag because Unicode has only country flags is peak Texas.

Although flags aren't heraldry, I think the "should be recognizable at a distance" rule means that the heraldic rule of tincture is still pretty applicable - no metals (silver/white and yellow/gold) next to eachother, and no colors (red, blue, green, black, purple) next to eachother.

VICTORY! Congratulations Chris!
Congrats on defending your channel. This is a good video and, had Grey not handled things this way, this reaction would have put me on to his channel! I've discover so many new channels through reactions. I watched one of his videos and it was good but now i have a bad taste in my mouth with him
What's funny is that I knew about cpg Grey and didn't know vth until this happened
I knew about CPG Grey's channel for years, and I like many of his videos, but he lost a viewer going forward over this silliness.
@@Knightrosreactions are not a replacement and courts of law have ruled on this and allow reactions under fair use.
Yea, I don't get the hate for it. He put boring flags that copy the generic stars and stripes design higher.
I think that if California just got rid of the writing and simplified the bear's design a little, they'd have a great flag.

A cherry tree would be amazing, for the wink and a nod to the story about George but also because, well, we grow a lot of cherries here.
The Evergreen State having a pine tree on the flag would also obviously work.

So much that could be done. At least it’s green?

One little point to be made, Grey is pointing out how successfully the flags serve as flags, not specifically how much he likes them personally.

@@VG-fk6nk
I'm aware of the origin of the word 'fan'. And while that may be where the word _comes_ from, the word has evolved in the present-day lexicon. When people use it to refer to themselves or others, they usually just use the word to mean 'I enjoy/support this person/thing and what they do'.
So when people say:
'I'm a fan of such-and-such TV show'
or
'I'm a fan of so-and-so artist's artwork'
...it doesn't necessarily or even usually mean that they are a mindless _fanatic_ about it,
it simply means that they enjoy this person/place/thing.

Look, this is the last comment I'm going to make. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were well intentioned, and ignore the condescending 'Well if you want to be a brainless chimp, so be it'.

Yet you chose to pick up a proverbial sword and turn it into a battle in your one-man quest to return words to their original meaning in the minds of the general public.
Well this is not a fight I intended to start nor one do I intend to participate in any further.
So if it makes you feel better for me to say "Fine, you win, the word 'fan' should be eliminated from the English language, and I'm a brainless chimp"...

I didn't get the chance to watch this before it got struck. I think you've done far better reactions but it didn't deserve a strike.
That’s a fair assessment.
We did it boys!
Also tf you mean the version with the coat of arms isn't our flag?!
Minnesota's and Utah's blond hair was obvious, but I mean things like:
-Most of their pigtails curl up at the ends, but not New Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, or Oklahoma. Utah's pigtails are also straighter than most, but not as pin-straight as the other four I listed.
-Maryland's hair bows are red and yellow, which isn't incorrect and is certainly simpler to draw, but as a Marylander myself, I know those bows should have the entire flag pattern on them. 😂
This video is VTH’s trophy for his victory on the battlefield
Glad it's back. I wanna see CGP Grey's priceless reaction now. 🤣
Probably won't be one, he hasn't tweeted out a single peep about it since before this fiasco started.
It would be hilarious if he did a reaction to this reaction.
@@Revenante_of_Asylum If you ignore that tweet he made defaming vth that he since deleted then sure.
@@janehrahan5116 I think I missed it, what was the general gist of the defamation?
If a copyright strike isn't backed up with legal action then after 10 days it gets removed. Grey likely knew this, so his reaction would be literally nothing.
The fact that he gave bonus points to Texas and Alaska for how much Texans and Alaskans love their flags but didn’t give Colorado bonus points for *literally the exact same thing* is criminal
Congrats on losing the strike and getting this video up again!!
Veni,Vidi,Vici. Congrats on the win on the copyright system.
So glad this is back up. Sorry that you had to go through that saga.
Not sure it's much, but hopefully a new comment will help against the larger effects the strike actions have had against your channel. :)
Watching this one again in full for support!
The flag of the state of Colorado does not just have the letter "c," but also the letter "o" In a beautiful stylized form, which actually harkens back to the meaning of the word Colorado. It's awesome
The flag is meh. Having lived there, CO deserves better. Put Pike’s peak on it-it’s so epic-keep the red for its name, but get rid of the yellow.
@@EddieLlamas if you want what I think would be the best Colorado flag just look at Denver’s flag.
It was great to see you in the chat of the Atun-Shei livestream last night!
Wow Chris seems to really like CGP Grey. Hope they do collabs soon :D
💀
Does he know?
What happened?
@@MultiPhoenix06 he got falsely copyright striked
@@ThePixelated_kris ahh right
NY State flag would actually be better as a "I♥NY"
Edit: After seeing all these, I think Arizona should be S tier.
Happy to post here now this is reuploaded. Thanks for sticking to your guns!
Stainless Banner… though maybe that was appropriate.
im glad to see this back up! im real sorry you had to go through all that :(
Just a note about Kentucky: its seal (depicted on its flag) in fact predates the Civil War. Those figures are a pioneer and a statesman, not a Union and Confederate soldier, while the motto (though it could easily apply to the Civil War) was adopted in 1792.
This video was stuck in my watch later Playlist during this entire ordeal. Glad I can finally see what the fuss is all about.
Yeah good thing we don't have to pay a bloody tax just to say our opinion, leading to a feedback loop of yes men
Something that came to my mind while watching this is that I'm pretty sure there are major league sports teams that do a better job of designing state flags than the states themselves. For example, the New York Rangers have an alternative logo with the head of the Statue of Liberty that would have been perfect on a state flag. I also think that the Minnesota Wild logo could have worked as a state flag.
Also the New Orleans Saints logo.
The Maryland flag is S tier because of three reasons
1) it is historical combining lord Calvert and the Crosslands family crests - that is those crest that are linked to Lord Baltimore (yes the big city in the state not the capital which is Annapolis).
And it is not a bluebell
Wooo it’s back 🎉 well deserved you did nothing wrong and always provide more to videos. Keep up the good work VTH.
Thanks again for the reaction and the smile.
Of all the states, it’s Kentucky I’d like to see an awesome flag from. Y’all just have so much personality.
The California flag is perfect as is this is a fail list Maryland is in his top tier and Texas that's proof of how bad it is
@@centennialpeaksadventures sadly racism isn't a personality trait I'd be proud of.
Cope and seethe, Grey.
I’d honestly argue that Maryland’s citizens take the top spot for sporting the flag. It’s literally on everything here.
Love your reactions videos overall, but i would love to see more from Grey! I hope you do more in the future!! Keep up the good work and much love from a Swedish fan!!🇸🇪
"Wyoming has lots of open space."

Ahem…. Nunavut
Yup, plenty of open space there.
Watching again. Good to see it back up
Hey Chris, I know I’m not the first nor will I be the last to comment this, but we Marylanders LOVE our flag and give Colorado a run for its money on being the most prideful for our state flags. I can’t speak for others but I have mugs, t-shirts, and of course flags with the Maryland design and it has a really cool history when you research it more too, dating back to the Civil War. It may be the most likely to induce a seizure on the viewer but it is an easy S tier for me lol.
I've said it before: Your flag is a funny hat. Wear it with pride!
I don’t know if this guy’s ever been to MD or TX. I lived in CO (live in MD now)-trust me, no one comes close to MD and TX for flag pride. CO flag ubiquity is meh in comparison.
Glad to see this video is back 👏
Utah just recently changed their flag.
I love the Maryland flag because it just reminds me of an old European battle flag. No other reason needed
Ah yes, the forbidden video
It's back!
Sadly
Watching this video feels like watching the first half of the titanic movie
We're back in business baby
ngl ima just say this, I think CGP Grey's redesign of South Carolina is actual garbage lol
I'm New Mexican and I'm glad our flag gets some recognition
As a Texan, raised in New Mexico, with family mostly in Colorado, I have a lot of pride in those three flags.
After two weeks, it's finally available again..
I can not stress enough how his americapox and his zebras versus horses would be great as well as his Supreme Court shenanigans one
This one was fun too
I'm British, but spent about 6 months in NM as a kid, and always remembered the flag. Years later I lived in VA, and had no clue what the flag looked like!
As a supporter of justice, I came for my obligatory watch to help solidify your victory against the Tyrant.
That's some biased justice...
He used someone else's content without permission. The original had dozens of hours of work go into it, while the reaction had at most a few hours.
I rewatched this video because I didn't remember how it was from watching it the first time. But you definitely added a lot of context in this reaction. Maybe not as much as your normal videos because it wasn't a strictly historical video, but definitely enough to be considered fair use IMO.
you don't even know what fair use is
Glad it's back up. Never got to watch the first time but I have seen the original video.
16:42 YES! Someone gets it! Our flag looks lovely. Also, I’ve photoshopped it out, it just looks weird without saying IOWA across it.
