My grandfather insisted on never being seen in public with an alcoholic beverage because his father (who was around for Prohibition) taught him to NEVER, EVER, be seen with alcohol. It’s created some pretty funny scenarios over the years, especially around the holidays and family gatherings.

@@ayeeyee9634 My other grandfather (mother’s father) was a pretty heavy drinker, so when he wanted drinks at my parents wedding my grandfather (one I was referencing earlier) was designated as the one to pick them up. Apparently he showed up to the venue 2 hours late and from the back entrance in a massive trench coat and quietly placed the drinks on a back table. He got caught and had to explain himself, since doing shit like that is kinda weird. So that’s the day my mom found out about his “problem” with alcohol.

From what I understood drinking started becoming a larger problem in the U.S. as drinks with higher alcohol content became more wide spread and couple that with industrialization and you get a recipe for disaster. I also remember hearing that it was not uncommon for farmers in New England to have hard cider before going to work and that alcoholic beverages were a source of needed calories for laborers (especially farmers) and was often times safer than drinking water.

I rather appreciate that Oversimplified isn't a one-stop-shop. Leaving out some figures, even major players, might have been necessary to keep the video concise and flow better. This also encourages viewers to continue with their own study and/or research. A win-win in my book, as long as the omission doesn't discredit anything that WAS presented.

I was watching "Secrets in the Museum" yesterday (I think that's what the show was called...) and Vine-Glow was one of the subjects covered.
Joseph Gallo, it's creator, struggled to sell his wine grapes as different products (jam, jelly, snacks, ect...) due to prohibition, his business almost going belly-up, and found out that wine grapes don't taste that great and are only good for making wine. He did it as a last-ditch effort while still being a wine business that works within the written federal laws. The warning label was a real thing; On the box where everyone, including Prohibitionists, could see it. He and his company eventually were forced to stop its production after the government, embarrassed by how Gallo wasn't breaking any laws and had even approved a few loans for the business to stay in business, were pressured into changing/updating said laws just to stop the sale and production of a legal product.

Fun fact: Winston Churchill took a trip for a lecture tour in the USA during the height of prohibition, 1931 I think.
Now, alcohol fact: Heavy drinkers (Churchill was one) tend to experience withdrawal symptoms when brutally forced to not drink.
And now, English fact: Those chaps drive on the left for some reason.
What happens next? While getting out of a cab in NYC, Churchill, maybe distracted/confused by mild withdrawal symptoms, forgot that americans drive on the right and looked the wrong way before crossing the street. He got badly hit by an oncoming car and ended up with several bruises, some broken bones and a severe mental shock.
Aaaand the fun begins: Churchill goes to the hospital, meets some doctor who concluded that alcohol was the best medicine to get cured of BEING HIT BY A CAR and writes the prescription (to the doc's defense it may have been wise to eliminate potentially severe withdrawal symptoms on a patient recovering from such an accident). And of course good old Winston got better in no time after that.
Now some specifics about the medical script: Churchill was prescribed six (6) shots of spirits at every meal but no upper limit was fixed.
The irony. Doctors who practiced during the PROHIBITION era were prescribing alcohol consumption regimens that would be considered dangerously abusive, even requiring medical intervention during our times (of liberated and socially accepted drinking).
Sorry if my english is weirdly written, I'm a francophone from Quebec city. Who happened to self-prescribe Churchill-Grade amounts of whiskey during this way too weird isolated christmas night. Cheers to all those who live alone during these times, we'll all get through this.
Finally thank you Mr.Terry for your work! Wish I had an history teacher of your type 20 years ago.

The toilet paper roll patent specifies the “over” position

    • @StorymasterQ

Someone should apply a patent for the "under" position, then sue anyone who does it for patent violation.
      Everyone uses the "over" position.
      Problem solved.

Generally speaking the only people who put up toilet paper rolls releasing paper under rather than over are people with playfully cats. It avoids them batting down the whole roll.

@@MrTerry that was something I was very surprised to learn. It's a side of the crime families I never realized existed. I always thought they were just ruthless and evil, and never understood how some mob bosses were viewed as celebrities. That's my favorite thing about history, there's always something new to learn about or refresh up on. And it never gets boring.

Other fun facts of Prohibition: The Volstead Act permitted people to make 200 gallons (roughly 1000 regular liquor bottles) of cider or wine a year. The Bureau of Internal Revenue (now the IRS) struck down the 0.5% limit on those two drinks, so don't say the IRS never did anything for you. :)

Some more info about George Remus.
When he left for prison, he gave power of attorney to his wife, Imogene. She now controlled his entire operation and all his assets. While in prison he told another inmate that his wife had his power of attorney.
The ‘inmate’ was an undercover prohibition agent. He resigned his job and started an affair with Imogene. Together, they sold his assets and hid as much as possible. They then tried unsuccessfully to have him deported. They then hired a hit man to kill him. The entire time she was suing him for divorce.
After Remus left prison, he had his driver run her car off the road. As she fled on foot, he chased and shot her to death. After his wife’s death was confirmed, they took Remus to Eden Park to look for the gun, with no success. Later that day, the prosecutor’s office sent a psychologist to Remus’ cell. He happily explained how his wife and her lover “broke up my home, robbed me of my fortune and double-crossed the federal government” and assured the doctor he wasn’t insane - but then added, “No man could be perfectly sane and commit the crime that I’ve done.”
He acted as his own lawyer at his murder trial. He pled innocent by reason of insanity. Prosecutors brought in three psychological experts to examine Remus and refute the claim, but a steady stream of defense witnesses attested that while “he was exceptionally intelligent and sane and bright and shrewd” most of the time, when it came to Imogene and Dodge-the agent she had the affair with- “he was crazy as a bedbug.” Furthermore, to the dismay of prosecutors, Remus and his attorney were able to discuss what Imogene had done, offering an explanation for why he’d gone mad.
After 19 minutes of deliberation, the jury found him not guilty on ground of insanity with one juror later saying: “We felt that Remus had been greatly wronged, that he had suffered almost beyond human endurance.”
He went to the state hospital for the criminally insane. After appealing that he was no longer insane, he was able to leave after only two months in the hospital.
Remus tried to re-enter bootlegging but found that violent gangsters had taken it over. He opened a real estate office, lived quietly, and spent much time trying to reclaim his property. He never recovered most of his assets. He died at home of natural causes in 1952 at age 77.
(Though it has never been confirmed, legend has it F. Scott Fitzgerald based the central figure of “The Great Gatsby” on Remus.)

My Great grandpa lived during Prohibition near the border with Maine in New-Brunswick, he wanted to get a license to open up a bar in the town but the mayor of the time refused out-right for no apparent reason. So he moon-shined his own and made a speakeasy in his home, he also smuggled a bunch of it to the United States by sailing the river crossing and selling it to a waiting buyer. He eventually was forced out and used his money to buy himself a modest little home where me and my family live in to this day and where I am currently writing this

16:34 My dad said that one good reason to put the flap under is if you have a cat. Since cats like to mess with things, if you put the toilet paper like a normal person then the cat will be able to bat at it and unravel the ENTIRE thing. If you put it under, then it will still spin when they bat at it, but it won't unravel.
