Yes. And some countries have changed sides, like Austria. Still, Austria does have some left hand driving lines and France also has right hand driving lines.

Regarding the wayside speed limit signage: my understanding is that the passenger train number is on top while the bottom number is for freights. Do I have this backwards? Over the past few videos it seems the larger number is always on the bottom, and my thinking is freight trains (due to their higher tonnage impacting stopping distance) would have a lower top speed. Or are the passengers told on their ticket a travel time variance (min/max) and they mostly don't care? Also these appear to be busy lines so moving quicker through the system allows more trains on the same line wouldn't it?
The speed is planned so that passengers making a connection don't have to wait long. All trains at the main hub stations arrive and leave at about the same time. In the late afternoon I sometimes take this route, instead of the direct Bern-Zurich service, because it is less crowded and more comfortable, even if it takes a little longer.
The number of trains slots available per hour are fixed and calculated. In many cases, driving faster will end up taking longer due and cause unnecessary stops due to conflicting paths. The aim is to get passengers where they need to get on time. Driving at full throttle uses considerably more power, depreciates the infrastructure faster and just means you'll be waiting at the next station until the departure time comes.
@@lorirocks777 Got it, I'm kinda familiar with our municipal light rail (subways) here and I had similar explained to me once by a driver while waiting at a signal inside the tunnel but no other trains in sight. I rather also be on time dependably instead of arriving early (or late and missing my connection) due to bad planning on the part of the rail administration.

Well that was a challenge to see ahead. When the time table is 'generous' is there a cumulative 'bonus' for efficiency, minimum power and brake usage and exact time keeping?
The only bonus is knowing you did your best and provided a comfortable ride. I make it a point to brake and accelerate as smoothly as possible - which was the only way in the pioneer days - but now that trains are so high powered, it's easier to drive in a sloppy manner, like many modern tram and bis drivers.

Это совсем не удивительно, что разного рода "менеджеры" получают такие зарплаты... денег на масштабное обновление подвижного состава и развития инфраструктуры у них никогда нет и не было, но себе всегда находят. Не только в одной "Укрзалізниці", но в экономике в целом. Вот им и остаётся только поддерживать, чтобы не развалилась раньше времени, а так как деньги от оборота идут не в (хотя бы, какое там развитие) надлежащее содержание жд, а на повышение зарплат "менеджерам", то отсюда и сокращение, и "оптимізація" (частично оправдано, ибо саму страну от собственной промышленности зачистили. А раз нет рабочих мест, то и население редеет и бежат кто куда. Что и кого возить? Не отставание, а деградация). В Швейцарии такого подхода никогда не поймут ) У них, как видно по видео, несколько другая организация работы жд, всё работает плавно и точно, как механизм швейцарских часов ), и к труду отношение иное и остальная экономика точно так же. И сознание у людей совсем другое. Что скажешь, Швейцария )

Generally speaking, the greater number is for passenger (bottom) and locomotive trains, while the lower number is for freight (top).
