Tomi (vocals) have also a band called Sinisthra and he did the vocals on Hallatar album. Check out "My Mistake" by them.

Amorphis always delivers. Listening to them for almost 25 years now. I was never disappointed with any of their releases. That is one hell of a rabbit hole to go down I can assure you! Even their older and very raw sound (black winter day from 1995 f.ex.) is top game. I hope you'll be listening to more stuff from them, it's worth it for sure.

I should go sleep (it's 6am rn) but Amorphis appears on channel.
This oriental guitar line is great. Tomi has one of the best voice in metal. In my opinion this is so radio friendly song. I'm glad that you like it.
    Great reaction, as always.

That's the sound of a sitar, which is indian, not middle-eastern at all.

A couple of years ago Amorphis was able, even though it was Covid time, to play their 30th anniversary concerts at Tavastia Club, Helsinki Finland. Three nights in a row, covering one decade per night, in reverse order, starting with newer songs. Actually six concerts, two every day, with the same setlist. I attended the latter gig each day. I got a little worried when I thought Tomi's voice was not perfect during the first song, but it was great from the second song onwards from growling to cleans so easily. It must be hard for a vocalist to do two concerts the same day. You have to warm up your voice the second time after a pause of 2-3 hours.

They really deserve more. But I also remember them saying that they are happy where they are now. They have enough gigs and I believe all of them still have day job.

Great reaction. Amorphis has got to be one of the best out there. They never fail to deliver. A couple little tidbits: The flute part is Cringel Glanzmann from Eluviete, and his microphone is custom made, specifically for Tomi. :)

i got into amorphis around the time they released tuonela, their 4th album, and have been a big fan since. their first 6 albums all sound different, prob because there was at least 1 line-up change between every album, but starting with their 7th album, eclipse, when tomi joutsen took over lead vocals, they really found their sound.

  • @ApocalypseRider

Great one, Mr. Wolff! You should definitely check out more Amorphis. FYI: The name of the band comes from the word "Amorphous", so you can expect is a bit of diversity in their discography over the decades.

Good video choice. One of my favorites from the band!
In a way, a "newer production", because the song came out in 2015 - and the band was founded in 1990.
I really like Tomi's singing, he can sing versatile. But I also like Esa Holopainen's (not related to Tuomas Holopainen) guitar solos in different songs.

It's funny to me that in the West we've basically designated one scale as "middle eastern". There are 7 'modes' for each scale, everyone knows two of them - "[natural] major" a.k.a ionian mode, and "[natural] minor" a.k.a aolian mode, and this song is in the 'phrygian mode'. It's a cool sound because with every other mode you'll commonly hear, the scale starts with a whole step, so if you start your scale in A, your next note is B. But in the phrygian mode, your scale starts with a half step, so starting in A you'd go to A# (or Bb). Every single Western song that uses this mode gets compared to "middle eastern", "Arabic", or "oriental" sounds, because a lot of Eastern music makes more use of half-steps in their compositions.
It's a fun bit of music theory and cultural history there for you :D

Check out something from their newest record, "The Moon" or "On the dark waters" are kick a$$ songs with great videos. Man I saw them live back in 2011 and I'm seeing them again in a week, this will be awesome! Thank you for getting back to them Tommy 🤘

Their earlier vocalist Pasi Koskinen was amazing as well. You should check out some stuff from late 90s and early 00s. Elegy album had these oriental vibes as well. My Kantele is probably the most well-known song from that era. Kantele in the title is a Finnish traditional string instrument that has some strong presence in the Finnish epoch Kalevala.

you need to check out some of the older amorphis. i'll try to be brief.
the first album, the karelian isthmus, is raw and brutal. most of the songs sound similar, but they are all decent - good. i would check out "the exile of the sons of uisliu" to get a feel for this album.
the second album, tales from the thousand lakes, is awesome! it's more melodic but still brutal, and it holds true to their finnish roots as it is a concept album based on the epic finnish poem, kalevala. lots of bangers on this album, but must listens are "the castaway" and "magic and mayhem", the latter sounds like the doors playing death metal.
elegy, the third album, marked a shift to a more melodic, progressive, and folky style of metal. it's more polished than the first 2 albums and showcases more clean vocals, but still has some growls. it's hard to pick what to recommend from this album, as each song brings something different to the table. "the orphan" is awesome. it's definitely more chill (pun intended) and folky. "against widows" is one of the heavier tracks on the album. "my kantele" is a cool song too, and there is also an acoustic reprise at the end of the album. i actually think the acoustic reprise is better.
tuonela, the 4th album, is one of my favorite amorphis albums. it is almost devoid of growls, except for 1 song, "greed", but tomi koivusaari isn't doing the growls, as on previous albums, and pasi koskinen's growls may not even be considered growls, but more so harsh clean vocals. this is the first amorphis album to feature saxophone and flute, which actually works really well. there really isn't a bad song on this album, but the title track, "tuonela" has some bad ass lyrics (and i'm not a big lyrics guy), and it blends right into "greed". i also recommend "rusty moon", if for no other reason than to hear the flute solo, but the song is good for other reasons too, and it blends into "summer's end", which is a nice album closer.
am universum, the 5th album, is kind of inconsistent, but continued along the path laid out by tuonela. the opening track, "alone" is an awesome song. "shatters within" is another passionate song, but my favorite track on the album is "veil of sin".
the 6th album, "far from the sun", is kind of stale, and is easily my least favorite amorphis album. it's the last album with pasi koskinen on vocals, and while i think pasi is talented, the band recaptured the heaviness with tomi joutsen's dynamic vocals. it was a much needed change. the title track is a good song, and the version of the album i have has an acoustic version of "far from the sun" that is even better.
    sorry i got a little wordy; i'm a nerd.

@@TheWolffAndTheMelody you're welcome! i just discovered your channel last night, so i'm going through to see what all you have reacted to. the one thing that i noticed in all the videos, sometimes it is hard to hear what you are saying. if i cast it on the tv, there's no problem, but when my son is watching paw patrol on the tv and i have to watch on my chromebook, i have a hard time hearing you, even though i have you turned all the way up and the tv turned down. the song is at a good volume, but sometimes i miss your commentary.
