Yeah, those low sounding instruments are awesome. Whether it’s the cello, the double bass, the bass clarinet, the contrabass clarinet, the bassoon, the contrabassoon, the trombone, the bass trombone, the euphonium, or the tuba, you’re always gonna hear those fantastic low sounds!
You also have to consider he started on euphonium and studied with Mark Cox who is a breathing expert. George also was top of his studio while he was at Central Michigan. He truly is an amazing musician and an equally cool guy.
I've watched/listened to this several times a years since being uploaded and I think it's been an opened tab on my laptop for about 1.5 years now. I'm a trumpet player too. Not enough trumpet players doing things like this.
I'll bet those 2 bass trombonists go home every night and eat raw meat until it's time to play again. That bald guy has ice water running through his veins. All was magnificent!
I know! I saw before they put it up that they were doing his 7th. I got extremely excited, but no fourth! Still phenomenal. And it's awesome to hear Nathan on principal more!
wow these guys sound really good!! i've been watching masterclasses videos online to get some inspiration because after taking a hiatus from playing the flute i needed time to think about what it is i wanted to do with music and also from playing for so many years i just needed a break.
I love the players and music they make in this video! Bravo! Well done to Mr. Zgonc for what looks like the circular breathing in Nielson Symphony No. 4!
Fun fact: Both George Curran and Colin Williams of the New York Philharmonic used to be in the Atlanta Symphony, and their replacements are the ASO members playing in this video. As far as I know, Colin Williams moved to the NY Phil after the Atlanta Symphony had those terrible contract problems a few years ago.
Hearing the Euphonium in this setting makes it all too clear what one of my conductors once said: "I play French Horn, but we French Horn players envy the sound of the Euphonium. It's what a French Horn should sound like." I agree with him.
i think that unless you have played these instruments in an orchestral setting you can't understand how they establish the floor of the composition. I played bass trombone for a number of years and while we played only fleetingly, it was critical to the overall voice of the piece.
My brass choir teacher at Arkansas Tech University Dr. Barrow would tell us when we die and go to your reward(if you believe in this)you will not hear woodwinds or drums...maybe a harp BUT BRASS! TUBA'S TRUMPETS HORNS BONES BUT NEVER THEM "REEDLICKERS"! He was funny!
Do you think you get a better sound when standing? Granted, you sit in band, orchestra, etc. But when playing in a small group why not stand and free up the torso even more?
+Doug Hess Two reasons: 1- If you'll be playing the excerpts with an orchestra where you'll be sitting, why play it two different ways? 2- The tubist must sit, so the rest of the members sit for uniformity. Trombone quartets usually stand, but brass quintets sit, because one of the members must sit.
@@robearhart5796 But wait a minute, haven't I seen tuba players stand before? I'm pretty sure I have. Plus, doesn't standing free up more usable lung capacity? Isn't that why say a solo flutist will stand up is partly to free up lung capacity?
Love it. I'm a double bassist and love and appreciate my low end siblings in the brass section. Wish I could upvote many times
Us low brass people love you guys too!
I've definitely thought about trying Double Bass as a tubist, it looks so cool

Nothing more pure than a low brass section sounding like an Organ. Oh and viva la Bass Trombone.

why is this so cool but when you hear a trumpet quintet you just wanna run for cover????

The fact that George Curran can hold the pedal E in Rheingold for 2 whole bars baffles me. So glad I got to here this live last year.
I agree. He looks tall though... Im sure he has a third lung. He also used his F trigger which adds some resistance. And luckily the E decrescendos.
+Chris Glassman I can hold it that long no problem, but I also play Tuba, so that's probably why.
You also have to consider he started on euphonium and studied with Mark Cox who is a breathing expert. George also was top of his studio while he was at Central Michigan. He truly is an amazing musician and an equally cool guy.
all of you are correct
I came here searching for some good trombone and that’s exactly what I got. God bless

I keep listening to this trying to make sure this is the sound that is in my head--and comes out of my horn.

Brian Hecht has a tone like a string bass it’s so beautiful
14:53 the bass trombone.... oh my god...
When George and Brian start playing in unison on the Shostakovich... Wow
Absolutely love the sound on the Leningrad Symphony excerpt. So resonant and the balance between the trombones and tuba are exquisite!
Fun to listen to and "hear" the rest of the orchestra in your mind playing with them.

CorvetteCoonass I like the euphonium, but as a hornist of 30 years, I have never heard any other hornist say anything like this...including myself!
Actually Horn players envy the Wagner Tuba sound so that's what the Euphonium should really be. Lol jk
