O livro d'O Hobbit foi melhor qu'O Senhor dos Anéis. Um livro sem roteiro, sem regras, espontâneo. Mas o próprio Tolkien odiava o livro por o achar infantil de mais, ele começou a reescrevê-lo, porem abandonou o projeto ao chegar nas cenas de Valfenda.
Em O Hobbit temos uma raça única, os Hobbits, temos os Trolls, os gigantes, os orcs e os goblins, os anões, os homens, os elfos, o Tom Bombadil e sua esposa, mas no final, Tolkien cortou a diversidade, pois achar que sua Terra Média devia ter muitas e muitas regras rígidas, para no final em vida ele só publicar 2 livros, O Hobbit e O Senhor dos Anéis, que devido aos interesses da editora e das bibliotecas, o livro foi divido em 3.
