Hi Bisscute! You asked about what is a 'hard deck' - It is the lowest altitude allowed to be flown during a training exercise. It is usually about 1000 meters above the highest land mass in the area like a mountain. That way, if there is a mechanical problem or other problem, the pilot has a chance to adapt without crashing right away.

    • @fizban5959
      @fizban5959 ปีที่แล้ว +16

In addition it simulates the surface of the earth in a training excercise. So if Maverick flew below the hard deck, it means in that training he crushed his plane in the ground and is dead for this excercise.

The backseat of those jets, the "rio" helps with Navigation, Communication, and has a Radar array that shows multiple targets, can fire off flares and chaff and other things that help confuse enemy missles. I don't think they can actually fire missles from back there but they can help with the defensive and tactical stuff and provide information, electronic warfare like jamming, take pictures etc. They allow the pilot to stay focussed on flying a very complex aircrafts and dogfighting and of course, command. It really is a two person job although modern jets can do much of this automatically now, and have much better interfaces than in the past and I believe the modern versions of this class are piloted by one pilot and a lot of screens, Heads Up Displays, Computers, and software interfaces. I'm kinda talking from a point of NOT being a pilot, so correct me if I am wrong guys, but this is the Jist of it. Databyter

They aid in locking a target in as well as arming the missile to be fired by the pilot up front. But you are correct only the front seat in aircraft like the 14 or like in the aircraft I flew featured in the second movie the 18F (called a WSO in that aircraft) can fire off a missile or fire rounds out of the cannon. Having a back seater also adds a second pair of eyes looking out for threats which in some cases can mean the difference between life and death.

Iceman wasn't a bad pilot, or even a jerk. He was kind of shown as the antagonist, but he was right. Maverick was dangerous. Iceman had good reason not to like him. Towards the end, Maverick just learned to depend on others, and while chaotic, wasn't dangerous to others he was flying with.

Goose's description of Iceman in the beginning was spot on for what a skilled pilot needs to be. Patient, observant, and ready to strike when the right opportunity shows itself. The fact that he held off five MiGs for almost ten minutes, entirely defensive, while Maverick launched and rushed his way there to save the day says more than enough about his skills.

Great reaction - the english term is "Jet Wash" which caused the engines to flame out. The early revisions of the F14 Tomcat had a problem with unstable airflow causing the engines to flame out. Goose ejected when they were in a flat spin - so no forward speed - so the jettisoned canopy was not swept away by the airflow - he ejected and hit the underside of the canopy and broke his neck. This did happen in real life on at least one occasion.

Let's Go Fact: Riding on the back of this film's success, the U.S. Navy set up recruiting booths in the major cinemas to try and catch some of the adrenaline charged guys leaving the screenings. They had the highest applications rate for years as a result.

I'd just like to add that the F-14 had a very complex radar/missle system that could track 24 targets, lock on 6 and fire 6 missiles in succession. So an RIO was needed so the pilot could concentrate on flying and the RIO was a second set of eyes which is always a plus in a dogfight.

    1. An old shipmate of mine was onboard the Enterprise when they filmed this.
    2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash.
    3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎
    4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT
    5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong.
    6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone"
    7. The officer(Goose) is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation.
    8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space.
    9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano" She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT
    10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood (not the pilot). There is AC onboard.
    11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV.
    12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT.
    13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seems like they were practicing. Better yet, it has a plot. (Besides Navy recruitment).

This movie was a huge box office success in 1986. It was singlehandedly responsible for increasing recruitment for the U.S. Navy. The movie itself had a successful soundtrack with several hit songs. The plot line appealed to women with the romance part of it and the guys of course loved the F-14 Tomcat. Sadly, the F-14 Tomcat has been removed from service in the U.S. Navy for a while now. Iran is the only other country to have ever purchased the F-14 and they continue to fly them today.

My MOS in the United States Marine Corps, was Expeditionary Airfield Equipment Technician. Basically, we stopped tailhook aircraft, using the M-21 portable arresting gear and the E-28 emergency arresting gear. So......the flight deck of an aircraft carrier is very similar to what I did for the 6 years that I served. Since the F-14 Tomcat was strictly Navy, I never had the chance to "trap" one of them. But I did "trap" the F-4 Phantom, A-4 Skyhawk, A-6 Intruder, A-7 Corsair, F/A-18 Hornet and the E-2 Hawkeye, as well as the F-5 trainer aircraft. We also installed portable airfields, including the Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System. I'll never forget my years in the Marines, 1977-1983. Semper Fi

Fun fact: The Navy allowed the production company to fire 2 live missiles. It just comes across smug because him and Maverick have the same character trait of being completely arrogant.

Jet Wash is a condition where the airis disturbed by another Jet. The problem isn't just like turbulence which could be easily recovered from. In their case, it caused them to lose an engine. Jet engines are very powerful and very reliable, but one thing they do require is a steady flow of compressed air. If a flight condition or a Jet wash condition disturbs the dense supply of air in front of a Jet engine it can flame out and it may be impossible to restart in a situation like that. To make it worse haveing ONE engine out, puts the Jet into a spin, and this can cause the OTHER engine to go out. If you lose both engines in a jet, and have no air flow over the wings, you can't glide, you can't power. You are just a rock falling down thry the air. He couldnt throttle out of it because the Jet wash caused him to lose one, then both engines. Because it caused him to spin, he had no air flow over his control surfaces so he could not dive for speed, or glide for a landing or engine restart. There is only a limited amount of things you can do in a flat spin, and depending on how much time (height) you have and how much air flow you have to play with to counteract the spin and THEN get flight control back, you may have almost no chance to recover. If he had been higher, had more time, and was able to slow down the spin and dive for airspeed, he could have glided the plane, maybe restarted the engines if it is possible on that model of Jet. But in this scenario, it was a really bad spin, and they were rapidly approaching the ground, so there was nothing to do but punch out. Normally the canapy will get out of the way, and the pilot and reo are shot out (with real explosives) after the canopyy clears. But because they were in a flat spin there was not enough airflow to pull the canopy away, and when the ejection seat fired, it fired him INTO the canopy, which at those speeds would have given him a serious head injury and likely a broken neck. He most likely would have died instantly with no pain. Databyter

Really quick - The "10,000 ft Hard Deck" means the "Virtual Ground is at 10,000". So, at 18:32, Maverick said he flew into the ground, but it was only for a few seconds.
*My father was stationed on the USS Ranger (CV-61) when they filmed the scene, in the Admiral's Quarters, where Cougar turned in his wings and the Captain told Mav & Goose they were going to Top Gun. My father was the only one with the key to that room, that day, so they wouldn't have been able to film that scene without him. He retired, CWO4, off the Ranger in 1987* 😁
*Oh yea! They offered him to be an extra, but he declined. My sisters and I still haven't forgiven him. lol When we all went to the Seattle premier, he was pointing out all his friends. ROE (Rules Of Engagement), like "do not fire until fired upon"
bogey - unidentified aircraft (a bogey can turn into a bandit)
    Bandit - identified enemy aircraft.
    Tally-ho "enemy in sight"
Hard Deck - The "Hard Deck" simulates the ground level, so if anyone goes bellow the hard deck means he just crashed (burn/died).
mach speed - is the speed of sound, roughly 340 m/s, so mach 2 is twice of the speed of sound. Comercial air liners (Airbus 320, Boeing 747, etc.) all flying around mach 0.85 and the fastest airplane "Blackbird" SR71 did mach 3.3 (3,540 km/h).
G force - The force of the gravity, so if you weight 60 kilograms and engage a maneuver of 5G, then you effective weight is 300 kg.

They even ripped off the scene where the automatic targeting system doesn't work (just like Luke turning off his targeting system and uses the Force) and send missiles down the shaft and blow up the facility. The only thing missing was a Darth Vader-type enemy ace pilot to shoot down the Navy jets, but they did include their version of a Han Solo-style last minute rescue by the arrogant Navy pilot who swoops in saves the day.

Just because you feel like the movie is a rip-off (and I'm not saying I don't agree with you), doesn't make it okay for you to spoil it for someone who hasn't seen it yet. Why would you do that to Bisscute? You have a right to your own opinions of course, but if you're going to include spoilers in your comments, it's common courtesy to preface your remarks by saying there are spoilers ahead. Maverick: mav·er·ick - noun - an unorthodox or independent-minded person. "he's the maverick of the fashion scene"
However, in real life, most pilots dont have super cool callsign. In pilot training they often wait until you say or do something dumb, and then you are stuck with it, or its just a boring version of your real name. You dont get to pick your own callsign.

The "hard deck" is the lowest elevation they can fly during their training exercises. It is supposed to represent the ground. So when Maverick says, "We were only below the hard deck for a few seconds" it makes no sense, because if you crash into the ground you would be dead.

The pilot was the Maverick, and the Cougar was the operator of the fighter's radar and weapons system. With today's fighters, the weapon and radar system is more automated and in just a few fighters there is still a second man to operate electronic warfare systems and also for advanced training, but in older fighters the second man in the cockpit was common

The "HARD DECK" is a term we used in the Navy, WHILE TRAINING, especially in ACM (Air Combat Maneuvering) in Top Gun, during the 1980's and 1990's, they had a 10,000 feet "HARD DECK" this is a safety margin, no dogfighting is supposed to take place below 10,000 feet above the ground, this gives a 10,000 foot margin of safety when you are training for combat. that is what the "HARD DECK" is.

Maverick is the Pilot flying, Goose is the RIO (Radio Intercept Officer). This means the job is split between 2. Maverick does the flying, goose does everything else like communications, radar ets. Hard deck is the simulated ground. If you go below 10 000FT you have hit the ground, and you are right, in war it does not matter. Training rules are set like this for safety

"hard Deck" is a simulation of the earth. If you go below the hard deck it means you drove your plane into the ground. The English term for the air coming out of the back of the Engine is "Jet Wash". The Co-Pilot is the "RIO". The Radio/Radar Information Officer.

The "jet wash" (exhaust) of the first plane disrupted the air intake of Maverick's plane, causing the engines to shut down due to a lack of air to achieve the proper mixture. Think of it as the exhaust from one plane was too much "dirty/fumes" for the other plane to filter out, and that caused the engines to shut down in order to avoid getting too hot or WORSE becoming too volatile with it's own jet fuel (basically becoming two potential BOMBS instead of engines). The "flame out" is a safety feature built into the engine when the air flow or mixture (air/fuel) is disrupted that is basically an "emergency shut down". While it IS possible to "restart" the engines, it takes time. Time that is measured in SECONDS as well as requires the plane to be in a "straight line" in order to get "clean air" into the intakes. BUT, due to the engines cutting out one at a time, it caused the thrust of the plane to basically "push" it into a flat spin, preventing the air flow that the plane needed to start the engines back up. Because of the flat spin, the engines were basically just "dead weight" providing NO thrust to counter the spin, let alone provide the power needed to operate the electronics for the flight controls, OR power the hydrolic controls... making the whole plane nothing but death-trap. Which is why they ejected to escape the plane. Sadly, the motion of the flat-spin caused the canopy to be ejected UPWARD instead of BACKWARD (due to wind moving over the canopy), resulting in Goose's ejection seat to slam his head into the canopy.
The "accident" as it happened on screen was a REAL event that happened to another pilot years prior to filming the movie. Thankfully, he was lucky to avoid hitting the canopy, but it was something that the Navy spent several MILLIONS to fix and address with future aircraft, especially the F-15 variations that came out AFTER this movie was released. (It was more a matter of research and experiments, as well as funding, that dictated the timing of the new variations, NOT the release of the movie)

In an F-14 the rear seater is the Radar Intercept Officer (RIO). This guy runs tbe radios and sensors in the plane and the pilot does the shooting. F-14's had a known sensitivity to airflow disruption on the engine intakes and the twin rudder relied a lot on engine power. If both flamed out the empennage tended to lock up, hence the unrecoverable flat spin.

"These jets look kind of cool, right?"
The F-14 is quite possibly the most attractive fighter jet ever developed. It has the sleek lines to show it is fast and powerful, but enough hard edges to show it is a workhorse and designed to fight. Various videos exist taken from chase plane of a -14 with wings swept full back and breaking off left or right. To those who love planes, the smoothness of the motion is a thing of beauty.

Great reaction, great movie. I don't particularly like Tom Cruise either but some of his movies are iconic, so have to respect him as an actor at least. Your English is very good, but you did make me laugh when you used the word unalive (which isn't a word, but you make so few mistakes and even if you do it's really easy to understand what you mean).
It also made me laugh when at the start you said you didn't really like fighter aircraft but by halfway through, maybe earlier you were like "I love these planes"!!! I think the cinematography, the script, and the acting make this a great movie with Tom Cruise, Anthony Edwards (Goose, not fair I think for his role in the US tv show ER), Meg Ryan (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail), Kelly McGellis (Charlie), Tom Skerrit (Viper), Val Kilmer (Iceman, who has played Batman, Willow), all well known actors, and Tony Scott was Ridley Scott's brother (director of Gladiator, Alien, Blade Runner) who directed this movie I think all made it so great. I've not seen the newer sequel yet, I just don't like visiting classics, and despite all the things wrong with this it is iconic.
The last thing I'll say is that this was set in the time of the Cold War where the Soviet Union were a real threat so you can imagine for fighter pilots going up in combat situations it really would be tense and they really were putting their lives on the line every time they flew. Once thing I found very odd though is that after the final battle, one engagement he is allowed to become an instructor. Surely this would never have happened as the best young pilots are needed on what you'd say is the front line, and he is hardly qualified to be an instructor, but I know this is just a story so can let this slide.

We understand things in other ways, we have different experiences. Anyway, can't wait for you to watch the sequel to Top Gun. I mean what a great movie that is! It's called jet wash. Plus that plane, the F14 Tomcat at the time of the movie had weak engines with bad compressors. The newer model f14d super tomcat had newer way more powerful engines. Hi Bisscute!🙂The hard deck is just a set altitude for an op. For instance if the hard deck is 10,000 feet, you can't go below 10,000 to get a tone lock on your adversary. But, your adversary can go below 10,000 so you can't attack him. It is kind of like running away. Goose hit his head on the canopy that popped off before he puched out of the jet. Normally the canopy would be clear of the area by the time the pilot ejects. "Top Gun: Maverick" is considered to be the superior film by most people that have seen it. The scenes with the jets are real fighter pilots with a very clever camera system. Great reactions to this film which is a little dated, Bisscute!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
