Trains at: Clapham Junction, SWML/BML, 23/12/21

- Hello and welcome to my annual end of year visit to Clapham Junction where you'll see no end of services from South Western Railway, Southern and London Overground.
There's a rich and varied history to come with this station and even though there were lines passing through the site there wasn't a physical station here for a good few years. Before the railway reached Clapham the area was rural and oddly enough specialised in Lavender. Hence why you have Lavender Hill in the area. In 1838 the London and Southampton Railway became the London and South Western Railway which then proceeded to open a line from Nine Elms to Woking. That was the first railway line through the area. The next line to operate was the line from Nine Elms to Richmond which opened in 1846. Two years later Waterloo was opened which then made Nine Elms redundant. In 1860 the line to Victoria was opened and three years later Clapham Junction was opened and was done as a joint venture between the London and South Western Railway, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway and the West London Extension Railway as an interchange for all of their lines.
When the station was built much of the Battersea area was heavily industrial and the Clapham area was fashionable (insert joke here) this actually worked in the railway companies favour as they all wanted to try and get the more upper and middle class people from the surrounding areas to come to Clapham. Which did work for a while, unfortunately there was a negative that was to come with all this. Because of the fact that the Battersea area was heavily industrial it meant that a lot of under privileged people at the time came into the area for work. Because of this the local population sky rocketed and went through the roof. In 1840 the local population was just touching 6000 and by the time 1910 decided to say hello the population was knocking on the door of 168,000. The area was full of slums which was eventually replaced with council housing by 1975.

I wouldn't want to be the signaller controlling Clapham Junction, my head would explode with all the trains passing everyday.
The 450 at 8:47 could be from Weybridge, Windsor & Eton Riverside or (as you said) Reading, or operating a Hounslow looper (London Waterloo to London Waterloo via Richmond and Hounslow, or via Hounslow then Richmond)

Clapham Junction is the busiest station in South London and south of London Waterloo. A train spotters place for train spotting.

An excellent video to round off 2021 with sir, complete with the usual slip ups! Roll on 2022 as they say and fingers crossed it will be an even better one! I will say that the South Western Railway is certainly the more horrible livery! As of the South West Trains liveried units with South Western Railway, the red livery is the inner suburban livery, the blue livery is the outer suburban livery and the white livery I'm not too sure on! The 458's used to have no corridors but following a repaint into the South West Trains outer suburban livery, they had corridors inserted into them. Two of the 158's and 159/1's repainted from the second oldest style of the South West Trains livery, which had the orange doors just in case you hadn't known, into the newer style of it, which is with the yellow doors just in case you hadn't known again, didn't require repainting again into the South Western Railway livery, of which there are different variations of it but I can't be bothered to go through them all! You did mention that you always come here to round off each year although I am to believe that wasn't the case last year if I remember correctly! Good to see the usual rule of thumb back this year though! It was nice to see you at Nottingham Station this year and who knows it might happen again in 2022! Have a good new year and I'll see you in 2022 for the next film, of which I won't tell anyone else watching which one as I don't want to give too much away and fingers crossed we get to see a Mainline series of some variation! Better luck with the mask next time as well at the next mystery trainspotting location! 😂

458s had more than just a repaint.
They were reformed into 5 car units, using rebuilt ex Gatwick Express class 460 "Darth Vader" units. In addition six extra 458s were formed using 460 vehicles. The ex 460 stock is easy to spot, they have ribbon glazing, whereas the original 458 stock have individual glass in rubber window seals. The 458s also had their maximum speed reduced to 75mph.
Since the 442 refurbishment was abandoned and the 442s scrapped, some 458s will be refurbished, reduced to 4-car units and have their 100mph speed reinstated. They will be used on the Portsmouth line services.
As for 2022. Not off to a good start.
All Southern services through Clapham Junction to Victoria have stopped. Southern / Gatwick Express have stopped all services to Victoria due to the Covid situation. Just TfL and SWR at Clapham Junction at the moment.
Southern are just serving London Bridge for now.

The Gatwick Express resumed operations with the December 2021 timetable change, however, they have since stopped operations again, while the engineering works affecting Southern and Gatwick Express services are done, and Covid cases come back down again

Clapham Junction is the best Station to end 2021. Clapham Junction has the Network Rail Signage on all of its 17 Platforms. As the Northern Line is set to be extended to Clapham Junction there are issues of commuters flooding the extension. To solve this problem, the Northern Line should be extended to Epsom from Battersea Power Station with stops at Clapham Junction, Wandsworth Town, Wimbledon, Wimbledon Chase, North Cheam and Ewell.This coming Thursday, I’ll be on the 7:35 AM South Western Railway Service to Poole where I’ll end my journey at Bournemouth. I’ll be passing by Clapham Junction as the train leaves London for Dorset. The Stops are Woking, Basingstoke, Winchester, Eastleigh, Southampton Airport Parkway, Southampton Central and Brockenhurst before I leave at Bournemouth as the train continues to Poole. The SWR Weymouth services first stop is Clapham Junction and sometimes the train itself divides at Bournemouth with one 5-coach unit continuing to Weymouth and the other staying put. Because of Winter, I’ll be going as far as Bournemouth. I’ll visit Weymouth on Friday April 29, 2022 when the days are longer, warmer and sunny. Merry Christmas 🎄 and happy New Year 2022!

MR T. watched the G.C.R. diesel gala vid you posted last month, which I also attended and enjoyed very much. So just a quick heads up if you do not already know. 15 and 16 January 22 G.C.R. are running an EAST COAST MAINLINE WEEKEND where Black 5 73156, a DMU, A DELTIC, AND TORNADO are booked to run. @@Tornado922 yes it was a great time , starting with watching this vid. Always enjoy a day at Clapham j. But after a few hours my head starts to spin trying to scribble all the numbers down.
Clapham Junction isn't as busy as it usually is. SWR have reduced services. Only two per hour to Epsom, with one going to Guildford, the other Dorking. Epsom used to be four per hour, with six at the peak times. Most Salisbury services now terminate at Basingstoke, with just the hourly Exeter's going to Waterloo. Weymouth is hourly now.
As of Jan 2022 it's even quieter. There are NO services to Victoria. No Southern or Gatwick Express through Clapham Junction, due to Covid. They're concentrating their available resources at London Bridge.
All trains from Gatwick are to or via London Bridge.
Epsom prior to Covid had nine to eleven trains per hour to London, serving Waterloo, Victoria, London Bridge. 2022 it's four, 2 x Waterloo, 2 x London Bridge. I do wonder if services will resume to some form of pre Covid levels, or if it will be a convenient and slight of hand way to permanently alter various services?
As I live somewhere many miles from railway tracks let along railway tracks carrying passenger cars, I always enjoy spending a bit of time with your videos. Have to confess to enjoying the ones where trains roar through the station at top speed. Was wondering if there are any plans to electrify this section of railway?
Also, you might want to slow down the delivery of your regular intro. For months I've been wondering what exactly you are saying. I finally figured it out (another episode of trains at) but for awhile thought it was "trains app" which doesn't make any sense.
Have you tried a wind screen for your microphone? The wind noise can be a bit wearing.
Otherwise congratulations on another fine year of train videos.
This railway network is actually electrified through the use of a third rail.
In terms of my introduction I have been meaning to start speaking slower but I always seem to end up getting faster and faster as the year progresses and I really have no idea why this is the case but i shall make more of an effort next year to make my commentary more understandable.
I do have a microphone cover over the mic on my tablet which eliminates a lot of the wind noise but sadly can't get all of it so I do apologise for this :)
@@Tornado922 A tiny bit embarrassed to admit that I actually knew about the trains running on third rail. (Some time ago took the train from London to Brighton.) Just gotten used to seeing the electric locomotives getting their electricity from above.

Can you do the swr mainline again
The train race between the 377's was very good indeed! Personally for long distance I would do a 373 Eurostar vs a 374 Eurostar from London St Pancras International to either Paris Gare du Nord or Brussels Midi! 😂

What the difference between the SWR 158’s and 159’s
158’s on SWR Are 2 coaches, 159’s Are 3.
Whats 707s doing there, they're at southeastern
Not all of the 707s have transferred to Southeastern yet, the whole fleet should be transferred by spring 2022
14 are still with SWR. 16 have been transferred to Southeastern.
