Trains at: Basingstoke, SWML, 03/09/22

- A very enjoyable session spent at Basingstoke on the South Western Mainline where we see plenty of services from South Western Railway, Cross Country and Great Western Railway.
The station was opened in 1839 and was for a short time the terminus of the line running from London until the link to Winchester was opened a few years later. It was opened by the London and Southwestern Railway and became a through station in 1840.
Basingstoke is also the start of the West of England Main Line taking trains from the capital to the likes of Salisbury. Great Western trains were using the area for quite some time afterwards but they weren't using this station. They had their own station that they were using mostly due to the fact that they were operating on a completely different loading gauge to the rest of the UK at the time. GWR were running trains to and from Reading from 1848 and it would continue right up until 1932 when the station was closed and demolished all in the same year, since then they have been using Basingstoke station.
There hasn't been a whole amount of stuff that has happened at this station with the expectation of two rather unfortunate instances. The first one happened in 1993 when a bomb was left in a toilet by the IRA which was discovered shortly after a bomb scare at Reading by the same group. The second and much more disturbing thing to happen was a brief case that was left at the station which contained the mutilated remains of a male in his twenties. Reports suggested that he was sadly stabbed to death, whether or not anyone was caught and charged with his murder I'm not completely sure.

Living in the west midlands it is weird to see a desiro without a pantograph and single sliding plug doors at the end of the coach instead of double sliding plugs 1/3 and 2/3s down the coach
Do you like the 350 /2s? Hate them myself as someone who lives on the southern WCML (north of MK south of rugby)
@@Sarahbryson321 only been on one for a couple of short distance journeys but they didn't seem to bad granted this was only between Birmingham new street and Wolverhampton

My current gf lives in one of the apartments overlooking the Western end of the station. Awesome spot to watch the comings & goings.
Don't you think that Class 444 is a more modern Classic 442
Why do GWR use 165s in here? Is the line to reading not electrified or third railed?

Why?
I always prefer to film in the method that I do, it gives the viewer the impression of the train coming towards them as if they were standing on the platform aswell. I will try and get the SWML filmed a lot more next year when I get the chance to do so
I can see more weekday uploads coming soon because even December is not too far away!

This was quite the surprise to see. On this exact day I travelled down to Bournemouth for the Air Festival and then came back later in the evening. Unfortunately I went there earlier on in the day so you didn't end up catching my train on film. Anyways, nice to see you spotting in SWR territory again, and looking forward to future videos. I do like to try and get to as many different lines as is possible when I get the chance to do so. I haven't been onto the SWML for a good few years before this film so i though seeing as I wasn't too far away at the time I would give it a go

This is a great little station to come to with a great variety of services to be seen throughout the course of the day, you can also catch some freight coming through here if you are lucky enough!

Thoroughly enjoyable video Jared. As a northerner who knows nothing about SW services, can you tell me please , is it served by a mixture of third rail electric units and diesel units?
Thank you kindly! This station is indeed served by a mixture of EMUs and DMUs, the 158/159 units will go over to Bristol and Exeter from London. Those sections of line can only be worked by diesel trains, the rest of the network is worked by third rail EMUs
I prefer the SWT livery.

I think the Nottingham film has probably already been done by the time this film was out, so I'm going to say chalk that one up to poor planning! I think I would have been here at the time though... just! I think there may be a Midland Mainline series coming next year hopefully though, so fingers crossed that ends up at Nottingham!
I haven't done the Nottingham film as of yet, I'm hoping to get it done on 10/12/22 assuming there isn't any strike action taking place that weekend
@@Tornado922 You've not? If you are there this Saturday though, I might be there! If you are, then if you do decide to head to the upper level where the trams are, there are nine Citadis trams that are deers, so see if you can spot them and watch out for the red nosed one! Good luck if you decide to accept the challenge!
No strike action on EMR this weekend but there is a slightly reduced EMR Intercity service though with one train every hour on the Nottingham runs.
