Many thanks for this. I think I screwed up my timing by accidentally testing starter motor with the chain tensioner removed, and it's very helpful to see what I'm getting into before fiddling with this for the first time.
Hey just wanted to say I’m incredibly glad to have found your video series as I’m currently about to rebuild the top half of my first motorcycle (a 1981 gs450e) as soon as my parts come in. Looking forward to having a running motorcycle again thanks a ton for the help!
Paul Stransky Thanks a ton! I’m a real sucker for old UJM’s and I got to ride it for a summer before she decided to be a paperweight I’m the garage, but for an old bike it’s well Balanced and handled well and I’ve had more fun than expected tearing her apart and learning what makes it all tick, but I’m excited to ride again more than anything
Hey Thunder, I building a GS450 top end rebuild playlist on my channel as well so be sure to check it out of you can't find the information you are after!
Brick House Builds I’ll be sure to check it out, but I actually managed to get the engine back together and remounted on the bike but now I’m not getting any spark (but everything else seems to be working) so I guess It’s one thing then another
I know this video is old but when I line up the exhaust the left lobe is hitting the valve cap not letting me bolt down with the #1 arrow to the front?
@@ptstransky thanks...I did that. I have had the valves checked on a compression tester and put everything back together but still not getting very much compression or power out of #1 could be the carb??
It's mostly the same. Im nearly done rebuilding my 850GL right now, there's a middle sprocket that sort of helps keeps the cam chain on the right spots. It needs to come off and go back on before rotating the engine to ensure timing sticks. The cam brackets have four screws, I'm finding it best to do the middle X pattern as the lead. There's a lower plastic chain guide as well that's sort of a pain in the ass when reassembling, kinda just gets in the way and needs about the same amount of attention as the chain itself, it doesn't need to come out. Just go slow, I've watched these videos among a few others as a guide. Everything works out. Cams are timed and sticking to it. Valve clearance is well. Wish me luck on the compression test!
The carbs are the same on 83-87 GS450L's. The 83 GS 450TX is also a match. E-bay is an obvious source. Its a timing thing when they are listed. They will pop up. The wiring harness is very simple on that bike. If you are rebuilding the bike, pull it off and go over it. On some bikes I have taken the wiring diagram, blown it up to poster size for a few bucks to make it easier to trace wires. If you're just tracking problems, be patient, get a multimeter and start hunting. Loose grounds, cracked insulation leads to corrosion, cracked connectors etc. Lot's of sources in the web for that bike.. members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/ and www.thegsresources.com/ are two to get you started..
I’m working on a 81 Suzuki gs450t I have got the cams in correct position, it’s a TDC right cylinder, when I go to tighten the cam shaft clamps it keeps popping and skipping any tooth, what am I doing wrong??
When the tensioner is mounted , must the plunger be fixed statically inside or some movement is ok ? I mean is the tensioner piston moving , when the machine is working or must be fixed ? I think the piston must stay fixed
Hi Dimitar.. Once mounted the piston floats or moves. The spring keeps tension on the piston or push rod against the cam chain. When the engine is running you will see movement on the 'wheel' on the right side.
Thanks , Paul ! Mine is GSX1100-1980 . I'ts the same tensioner . What exactly is this "wheel" about ? Does it fix the extent of the movement of the piston ? Can I strech the cam chain only with the "wheel" without demounting the whole tensioner out ?
@@buchkazloko in theory.. TBT, I never messed with the cam chain without taking the tensioner all the way off. Easy enough to try. If you get slack, it works. If not, take it off.
Dave Walker that's a teardown to split the case.. Remove the engine, carbs, top end, sprocket, clutch, etc. Get a Clymer manual. It takes you through step by step. Unless you need to get to the trans or crank, really no need.
I had an 85 550L that I rebuilt as well. Much the same. Actually a bit easier in that the valve adjustment is done w adjustable rockers. No screwing with shims. 4 valves per cylinder. Very similar design.

Good luck! Once you get into it you'll find it pretty simple

Unless you're leaking fuel into the crankcase, I would begin looking at the carb. Make sure no air leaks on the boots etc.. good luck!

As long as the #2 cyl is TDC, you should be ok. When you bolt the cam down, it will push the valve down. Just double check everything.
@@ptstransky thanks...I did that. I have had the valves checked on a compression tester and put everything back together but still not getting very much compression or power out of #1 could be the carb??
do you have a video set on a 1982 gs650? wondering if the rebuild is the same even though it's 4 cylinders.

Is periodic adjustment of the cam tensioner needed? I’m looking in my manual and it’s not stated. Just on how to remove/install.
Thanks

No.. once it is set, it's self adjusting. You shouldn't have to mess w it. Good luck. Paul
Just bought a 87. Need a carburetor. Almost impossible to find and I have no idea how to do the wiring harness

@@buchkazloko you should be able to. Turn it to retract the pushrod, then use the set screw on the left hand side to tighten and hold it in retracted.
So ,1. I untie the left side screw2. Turn the right side wheel counterclockwise to the end 3. Tie and fix the left side screw Notning else ?
