Wow! I bought a 1981 GS450L new from the dealer and rode it for 62,000 miles. I know every inch of that bike, and I can say with certainty that what you have done here is as much art as it is mechanicking. It is an awesome and truly original creation. Thanks for the video.
Wow, that's one of the nicest things I've heard; means a lot coming from someone with more seat time on an "L" than I have. I tried not to make the bike look too hacked up and stripped down. I hope to reach that mileage someday! Thx mate!

Very nice build indeed! Can you please elaborate on your experience with this bike? Does it have enough power and is the frame sturdy enough so it doesn’t wiggle with the tail? Thank you in advance sir😊
Thanks for checking it out. First thing to know about this bike is that it's my first and only motorcycle, so I'm probably not the most qualified random person on TH-cam. That said, it's got plenty of power for up to 60 mph highways, but I wouldn’t recommend for 70+ mph interstates. The power fits the chassis though and I never get the sense it's flimsy. I think this frame is used on 550cc and up versions of the GS so it seems plenty for a 450. Hope that helps!

Did you need to go with a shorter swing arm bolt? Without the foot control brackets, there's about an extra half inch of bolt hanging out on mine... Great build you did there.
I didn't have to monkey with the swing arm bolt on my 450 "L" model. I've kept the stock brackets in place and they don't mount in place with the swing arm bolt. Kind of wish they did on mine though as I'd like to move the foot pegs backward like on the other GS450 versions. That may be a future modification I take on.

How did you straighten out the tank? Did you lower the mounts in the front of the tank? Or raise the back?

And are the forks standard?
I think the rears were TEC but check the video description for a link to the build details. Fronts are stock but new springs and oil.
Excellent job!! I'm rebuilding a '81 GS450 ST but I'm having carb jetting issues, so what did you finally end up with for jetting?

Mixture screw - 2.75 turns out
Pilot jet - 22.5
Float height - 22.4 mm
Jet needle - plastic spacer removed, one 0.5 mm washer in its place
Main jet - 137.5

Thanks! Yes, design was easy to mask for the different colors; just rattle cans in the backyard with some wet sanding in between coats.

how did you connect the speedometer? is there a special sensor to fit the factory gears?
I tried and tried to find a sensor to tie into the factor gears, and even ordered a few things that looked close but ultimately went with Koso's passive magnetic sensor. It uses magnets to detect speed. The pickup I mounted off the speed cable stay's bolt by modifying a bracket. I bored out shallow recesses in the 6 wheel hub bolts and set the magnets in them. Then just set the head unit to look for 6 magnet pulses. I used a different wheel and tire so the new diameter was compensated for in the programming as well. Hope that helps.

I noticed in your build parts list that you had ordered main jets sizes 135 to 147.5. What sizes ultimately worked for you?
I believe that I finally settled on 137.5. I'll double check when I'm home but according to my notes that's the last one I put in.
