These were really helpful
I couldn't be happier to hear that! Thank you!
Tom, please don't stop this series, I am addicted - I need to see where Norman and Crystale (accent on the 'a') end up, I am anticipating their adventure!!
Thanks man! That’s really nice of you to say! I’ll pass it on to Norman and Crystale (accent on the ‘a’). I gotta get a couple other games played before I get to scenario 2..... but it’s coming! Promise!
You did such a good job that everyone wants more!
Hahaha! That’s awesome! I’m finishing up the game I’m currently recording tonight/tomorrow morning.... then I’m diving into the next scenario!!!!
It's such a struggle. On the other hand I really really enjoy your playthrough and would like to see you play the following scenarios, but I also want to go spoiler free with my campaign from this on. Anyway great job with the tutorial this far, it has been most helpful.
Thanks Joel! How has your campaign gone so far?
I know these are a year old, but I've never played boardgame RPG's before and you're seriously getting me into gloomhaven lol. Thanks for the videos :)
That’s so awesome! I’m way glad!
I’ve played a few tabletop RPGs before... but I couldn’t really get into them. With so much freedom I always struggled to get into character. I always wanted to do the “cool thing” or the “right thing.” I also struggled with how the DM can just do whatever... so for the longest time I’ve looked for a board game to recreate that same storytelling but with actual rules 😂. I always tell people that Gloomhaven is the absolute closest experience to recreating D&D as a board game. I just really love it and admire it for what it is.
Hey Tom. For fear of spoilers I'll have to hold off on the rest of your Gloomhaven videos until I own the game myself, but I just wanted to say how great your videos are! They're so informative, entertaining, and EXACTLY what I look for in a board game vid. Thanks for making such quality content!
Thanks Jordan! That means a ton to me -- and I'm with you. I despise spoilers, so I totally get it! Hopefully we'll see you back when you catch up! (Assuming our characters go on a similar path of scenarios.....? Who knows!)
I just got my copy of the game this week, so I'm watching these videos a few months after the event, so I apologize for commenting a half a year behind your postings, but I just wanted to say thanks for posting these. Learning the game by watching video is at least as good (if not better) than just reading the manual, and even though technically I am exposing myself to spoilers, it is well worth it. Putting the rules of game play in the context of the scenario makes the rules sink in. Just reading the manual over and over will never be absorbed in the same way that watching is. And even those few mistakes that you make along the way are also very instructive, because most of the time, as a viewer, I spot the mistakes about the same time that your little ticker tape error corrections appear at the bottom , and it makes me realize that i'm actually getting it! At the moment I am wrestling with ways to ensure that my copy of the game stays in as good of shape as possible, (including ways to avoid Legacy type destruction) and one of the things I loved is using the Apps to minimize card wear and tear as well as preserving some of the mystery by not showing all of the rooms, all at once, so kudos to you for using at least some of the Apps available. And finally, the best thing for me which works a bit as an anti spoiler device, is just a good old fashioned middle aged man's poor short term memory; so even whilst i am re enforcing the rules while watching you play, I am aware that a lot of the details of the action and the narrative will just drift out of my head in a little while! lol. The best of both worlds! Again, thanks so much for taking the time to play this game for us, the viewers! Good job, and Well done!
Dang, what a nice comment! I really really do appreciate it. And, I'm with you -- this is how I learn best. Like, for example, with Rodney's "Watch it Played" channel, I truly believe he's the best in the "biz" -- but my learning style is such that just watching his video-rulebooks is kind of confusing for me. His gameplay videos are where I really really learn how to play games. So, that's part of what inspired the channel. I'm really glad that these videos have helped you out.
I'm 13 (?) games into Gloomhaven -- have read the rulebook about 6 times, and STILL make mistakes. I've just decided that that is okay, as long as I'm trying my best and having fun. :D Can't wait to hear how your first game or two work out for you!
I had really fun watching the first scenario, want to watch more but dont want to spoiler myself. Getting the game the 21th of july, cant wait too play it. :D
That’s so awesome!!!! I’m very excited for you!
If you find yourself needing some help storing some monsters, pop into my website. I have a free DIY solution you can use.... just throwing it out there in case you didn’t know (since I didn’t think it up or show it off until my 30th video or so....)
Thank you. Planning on running our first game today and I stayed up last night and early this morning reviewing your game. Even with any minor blips your video was EXTREMELY helpful in prepping me to show the guys the game!
I’m so glad! I want to hear how that game goes! Make sure you guys kill some undead fools for me....
@@TomTeachesGames So got Black Barrow on the table! I am sure we made some mistakes. One of them was I was unclear about XP works and will be going into that more in depth as to how it gets assigned. But your vids definitely gave me a starting point to work with :D Thank again man, it's appreciated. We won, lost both the Brute and the Craghart but the Spellweaver and Tinkerer took the mission through to completion. Spellweaver exhausted the turn after winning :D
Sounds like a pretty great start! And heck, I’ve played like 20 times and I STILL make mistakes. So don’t even worry about that. If you’re having fun, that’s really the most important part.
And, XP is weird. The ONLY time you get experience points is when you play a card and use an ability that gives you experience points (then some for winning the scenario). So, keep an eye out for those XP icons when you play cards. You don’t get any for killing monsters, or anything like that. So chances are you’re probably doing things right....
Fantastic videos far and away the best way to learn Gloomhaven on the internet!!
Nice one man and massive kudos
Dang Tony! Thanks a ton! I sure hope you had those subtitles turned on for my NUMEROUS mistakes 😂 I’m slowly getting better... but it’s a big game! I’ve got 10 games under my belt and I still struggle!
Huge thanks for your nice comment 😀
Tom Teaches haha i played my first 2 scenarios with health at full like a fool so the few mistakes you made were minor in comparison lol. Thank god for the Klingon subtitles man 😂😂😂
God and I love our Klingons 😜
Can't wait for the next episode Tom, keep up the good work.
Thanks man! You won’t have to wait too too long.... 😀
Thank you for the great work with this video series. Informative and very entertaining. Subbed!
Well dang, thanks!!!! Welcome to the family! I’ll try to keep the entertainment level up!
So I got Gloomhaven in May and played my 1st game yesterday (solo with 2 characters). I am scared shitless and therefore will watch your next scenario. 😂
And how did your game go?!? And I think being scared and overwhelmed is totally normal. Heck, I pretend it’s thematic. Our fear of approaching this mammoth game is just like your characters going into the crypt......
The item notes are for when your set is being used by multiple parties - each party has access to the full set of items, so you need to keep notes on what your character should have between games.
Ah. That makes sense.
Very ,Very helpful. Keep going please. ...and well done on the video. :-)
Thanks so much! I’m glad they’re helpful! I’m going to get a couple different games plaid this week, but then will circle back around and get the next scenario done - probably early next week (?). Fingers crossed.
My fiancée an I are playing tinker an spell weaver. Lost 2 times won the third. Your videos has been very helpful. An we enjoy watching it to completion. ( from now on thou have to watch it after we’ve attempted the scenario first thou.) spoiler free. :)
Spoiler Free is the only way to be!!!!! And I still know nothing about the Tinker.... but I’ve been “tinkering” with the idea of trying him (?) out....
I am pretty sure it's a she
Very helpful! Think I’m ready to play solo to start instead of wait on the schedule of friends to align with mine.
One thing i am dying to learn without wanting locked class spoilers... how long does it take to finish a goal thing where you unlock a new class? I guess for your brute goal you just get exhausted 12 times, which you could intentionally do at the end of each game, so minimum 12 games for that one. I am most excited about trying to unlock all 18 classes and theorycrafting fun group compositions. I’m hoping it won’t take 100 games to get there!
You’re so welcome!
So..... I’d have to look.... but it took me about 20ish games to reach Crystále’s goal. I still haven’t hit Norman’s........
So that’s been one thing that’s been tough for me. Leveling up and retiring characters feels like it takes forever for someone (me) who doesn’t play RPGs. I’m not used to playing any game 20 times.... so that feels kind of overly-long for me. But apparently it feels normal for normal RPG players.
Tom Teaches i definitely plan to pick the easier goal of the two, like for Crystalé I would have picked enhance 4 cards and finished it after adding +1 damage 4 times for a total of 120 gold I think. And been playing whatever that unlocks in hopefully less than a month.
Tom Teaches it looks like +10 and -10 party rep unlock a class too so hopefully I can get one of those fast!
It was a fun run-through. I must admit I am leery of spoilers -- not so much of scenarios (I wouldn't watch one if I hadn't done it first), but city/road events, random unlocks and maybe even character goals. I skipped parts of the first video because of that, but it might be trickier in the long term. It's a great idea to do the run-throughs, but that's my 2 (Aussie) cents.
Yeah, I totally 100% get that. Hell, I wouldn’t be watching my videos at all! Haha
Have you thought about maybe doing easy mode for a couple of scenarios? Just till you get the mechanics down pact, that is what I recommend to people. Want to see more Gloomhaven.
I have talked about this in the scenario setup video..... believe it or not, I am playing on easy mode.... hahaha! So, because of the level of the characters, Regular mode puts me at level 1. Then I subtracted one to be on “easy.” But then because it’s cooperative and all open information, the rule book tells you to add 1. So I’m playing on 1 rather than 2....
The solo rules are actually that to get the rewards (gold and XP) of level L, you have to use the monster and trap values of L+1. So in theory you should only be getting level 0 rewards here.
I have seen discussion to say that you probably shouldn't worry about that until you are more familiar with the game though. Open information isn't a great advantage before you can interpret it carefully.
No surprise here... You’re right! I swear I am literate.... good thing we’re not doing a drinking game for every time I get something wrong.... we’d all be alcoholics!
These are genuinely entertaining. And only partially because the cards hate your guts ;-)
😂 they really really really did in that particular play through. It was uncanny. I don’t know how I survived. Probably from all of the rules I got wrong. Haha
I've seen a bunch of Gloomhaven videos, and it seems like everybody has had to make text-corrections at the bottom of the screen... but I would say that despite anything you got wrong, I learned the most watching your series. (I think this is because you're really casual in your tone...yet you also seem to genuinely care about your characters - and nothing sounds scripted. I stay focused as a result. This feels more like a live-play podcast, in a way.) Also, the die-for-health trick and the loot trick are super helpful. Keep up the great work, though I admit I'm probably checking out due to spoilers. But as far as the rest of your content... Subscribed!
Seriously Daran, that means a ton. And I’m with you on the no-spoilers!!!! And yeah, I also watch a lot of the scripted videos, and I think that’s part of why I felt brave enough to jump into the board game media creator arena.... zero scripts or rehearsal here (for better or worse! Haha) And, maybe some non-Gloomhaven videos might also be entertaining. As I said, to this day I still haven’t seen any other Gloomhaven videos myself. So I’m totally in your boat there. Thanks again for the really nice comment! And I can’t wait to hear how your own Gloomhavening goes.....
My copy of Gloomhaven arrives today and I couldn't be more excited. Watching these videos has been great to get me up to speed on the rules so I can dive right in. I normally don't like spoilers either, but I figure for the first 1-3 scenarios it's not a big deal. There are so many in the book that I'm not worried about it. I'd like to request that you make a few more of these, as there are always new situations that'll come up where I'll wonder what the correct ruling is.
Also, can you tell me what apps you use to help you manage the game? I'd like to take a look at a few.
Thanks!
I’m glad these are helpful! And yeah, Gloomhaven videos will always be on the way.... This will be the next video I’m recording (probably on Saturday.)
So, there are a couple of different apps. I’m not sure their official names, but there are three major ones I know of - to find them I just searched for “gloomhaven” in the App Store. BUT, basically there is a “scenario viewer” that I use the most, I love that it hides the map tiles AND the text. To me, this one is a must.
There is a “campaign tracker” that I used in one or two videos, but ultimately found it tough to use while filming. So, it might be pretty easy for normal players to use, but it was pretty tricky to use while on camera. So I stopped.
Finally there is a “monster deck” app that essentially acts as a randomized for the attack modifiers. Shuffling and drawing cards is fun for me, so it that doesn’t bother me and that’s why I don’t personally use that app.
Does that help a little?
@@TomTeachesGames Yes, that was very helpful, thanks! I'll probably just do the scenario app for now as that seemed to work well for you. For the others, I'll play normal the first few times just to get a feel for the rules and game pieces and then evaluate again after a few scenarios.
Looking forward to watching the next videos in the series. Keep up the great work!
I feel like the SPOILER aspect of these videos is moot. I have watched a lot of GLOOMHAVEN videos and seen the demonstrators make so many mistakes that it makes me feel like NOT watching a lot of GLOOMHAVEN videos would SPOIL game because I would think I would make the same mistakes unless I saw them ahead of time.
I thank you for making the GLOOMHAVEN videos. I especially like the organizational ideas you had about marking the health and cards different than suggested in the game. GREAT IDEAS!
Thanks so much for saying that! I don’t know how many videos in my series you’ve watched.... I slowly get more and more ideas on keeping things organized in the box and such... so there are some thoughts too!
And yeah, it is so easy to make mistakes in this huge game. It’s tons of fun. I just had to learn to have fun and accept the fact that I’ll mess up. I’m glad you’re seeing enough mistakes and learning from them. It’ll certainly keep your nose out of the rulebook during gameplay.
@@TomTeachesGames I think I have watched about 10 Gloomhaven videos so far, each about 1 hour long on average. I have yet to play the game but I have used some of the organizational ideas on some of those videos. I got some plastic organizing trays for the parts and an accordion style folder for the scenario dungeon tiles. I wish I could make a Gloomhaven Game Play Video. I would combine all the good ideas I found out there in the video, but I don't have a good enough video camera and stuff.
I did like the playthrough, so please continue. As far as I know, there are more than 95 scenario to be played, so some spoilers on the first two is not that bad. It's better to play all the rest in the best way possible.
Good point! Tons and tons of scenarios... and I have no clue how this thing plays out - do people hit every scenario or not? I guess only time will tell! I’m still spoiler free :-D
Do you have to play multiple characters if playing solo? Do the rules state only 2 are played in that case?
I am thinking of buying Gloomhaven. I love mage Knight but wish there was more thematic elements. Also would like a game friends can play with me but not always. Can people jump in and out or is that impossible given leveling up?
I would have to check the rulebook.... I believe you do need to play with two characters for the main campaign. The only scenarios you play true-solo is with the specific solo-scenarios that you add on and get unlocked with time...
I do think people can jump in and out, you’ll just recalculate your difficulty level each time (average character level, divided by 2, rounded up).
Just be aware that if you’re character gets super buff and others are pretty weak, that might maybe impact things a little.... but I don’t know... where I am now my original character is super strong and my other character is pretty weak.... but it’s still pretty fun. Also, weak characters should level up faster.... so there’s some balance there.
BA-RO, BA-RO, not BAR-OH. Barrow as in wheelbarrow, or do you call that a wheel-bar-oh smh
Smh indeed.
The pronunciation of a fictional fantasy location seems way more important to you than it should. Since I know that I struggle with pronunciation through all of my videos, I’m going to invite you to pick a different channel to watch. Thank you for stopping by though!
you used a short rest...she didn't get the bonus...and you left the bless card in her deck
Yeah....... especially in those early games, I make a lot of goofs....
