Thanks man! i know its an old vid but this 2020 quarantine seems like the perfect time to start a campaign.
Oh, you are 100% right! Well, for most people.... as a teacher I'm busier now than I have been since my very first year teaching..... It's seriously fascinating how everyone is being affected so differently, and yet we all feel inconvenienced. One of those "the grass is always greener" things.
But did you start Gloomhaven? If so, how did your first scenario(s) go?
You said something like "who's watching, nobody"... mate, i watched. Thanks for your vid. It is well done and helped a noob like me
I’m glad you watched! And I’m really glad you felt like it helped. Make sure you let me know how your first game goes 😀
Your hand movement continuity cracks me up. Very nice touch! Again, you are doing an excellent job on your vids.
Thanks! Someone’s it’s not so continuous, but I do what I can. Haha
*Sometimes. Hahah
So great. I am really enjoying your run through. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it
I just started with the second printing campaign and struggled with the second campaign in solo (3 characters on “normal”). Your video is really nice. I am loving to follow your thoughts. Well done 👍
Thanks so much! This game is such a dang beast in so many ways...... I don't even know how your brain handles 3 characters! I'm super impressed.
Tom Teaches: step by step 🤣 and a split personality is soooo helpful 🤪
I think the key to beating this scenario is to focus all firepower on the boss and get rid of him as fast as you can so he can’t keep summoning more baddies.
I tend to agree...it's a mechanic used repeatedly in MMOs too...burn him down fast them take out the adds at your liesure
I am a first time Gloomhaven player and I did just that, killed the boss so quick that he did not even manage to open the second door. Solo game, brute and scoundrel. Few good attacks to weaken him and then a lucky shot with scoundrel: backstab, poison, and bottom of the single out card combined with 2X critical hit) but couple of minutes ago I lost the scenario because I failed to clean up the rest of the mob. The scenario was supposed to be pretty clear cut, however my luck did a 180 and I got a never ending serie of miss cards (fuck the mandatory curses in that scenario!!!) in critical moments that made me waste my most powerful cards. And despite reshuffling I kept getting more misses than usual. Almost flipped the table from anger when I lost... 🤦♂️ Oh well, tomorrow a retry
Also, the dice are a nice touch.
Perfect! If they’re easier to read, I’ll keep using them for sure.
We are definitely going to try the dice for health the next time we play, we played this past weekend (4 players) and we played a map with SO MANY monsters that we ran out of one health tokens! Dice would have been helpful, I also need to find reminders for shields, etc. Fallout has 5 or so blue shield tokens I might crib, did you ever figure out which game you had that had shields? Galaxy Defenders has a bunch, might use those instead!
That is it!!!!! I think I was thinking of Galaxy Defenders! As soon as I get home I’m checking that out..... and yeah! I can imagine that with 4 players the map will get a little crazy.....
Yeah. I am totally stealing this idea. Ordered 20 of them today.
eric
I just ordered this game. I am on pins and needles waiting on it to come in. I started watching a few vids. To get a understanding of how to play and found yours. Best I have found. I think I am getting a handle on it, but.... I am still watching. Am I cheating by watching, I don't know, I am not stopping now...lol.
Tell dang! Thanks a million for watching and commenting! This game is sooooooo big that watching a few play throughs is the equivalent of having the first 10 minutes of the LOTR extended trilogy spoiled. There’s a ton of story to go. And I’m super excited to cyber-meet you! Welcome to the family!
Bought gloomhaven beginning of week has a panic attack tying sort everything out 😂😂watching your vids been a great help trying the this behemoth:)
I'm so glad! I had that exact same feeling...... and am currently suffering with that for the game Anachrony....
Balls to the walls is not a dirty or sexual term.
Before the advent of electronic governors on turbines, the element would have two large balls on cables that gradually moved outward from a hanging position, until they were horizontal, which is where the governor would control as maximum speed. This horizontal position was colloquially called "balls out" or "balls to the wall"
That’s actually super fascinating! I teach 9th graders - every non-sexual thing I say is turned sexual, so I just assume anytime I say “balls” that I’ll have all of my 9th graders watching the video and saying “My teacher said ‘balls’....”
But I’m glad I learned something today!
Almost finished watching the video. At 1:47:00 Tom, you could’ve actually initiated a class move. Attack both enemies first. If the die you could run through them towards the treasure. Otherwise (which you already said) they are not moving! Meaning that you could attack (target 2 and 3 attack) and even walk away if necessary! Could’ve planned out as a disaster of course (so would your attack) but the potential is much higher.
Thanks for play through. Waiting patiently for a retail copy.
Rumor has it they’re on the way! And thanks for watching/commenting. I’m excited to hear how you like playing it yourself!
Ok I have to stop watching. Once I finish this area I will be back. Love this...
Awesome! We’ll see you later then!
42:00 Star Wars The Card Game LCG, maybe? They have little blueish grey shield tokens (though more blue than grey…..).
I'm using shields from Tyrants of Underdark to remind me which monsters come with one
Hey Tom! Loving the videos and the way you casually explain them ;)... I saw in a comment that you got Anachrony and was wondering if you were making a video with it, or just some general thoughts about the game? I’m in Aus so it’s not available to me unless I spend a bunch to order from US/CAN, but it looks like fun!
So, "funny" story (or sad, or dumb, pick your word) I did kickstart it, I went all-in... I got the HUGE box of boxes.... and I'm so busy and/or intimidated by it all that everything is still in the big shipping box sitting next to my shelf of games.....
One of these days I seriously need to just take a deep breath and just do it...
Haha. So… I ended up getting a Kickstarter copy from eBay! I really enjoy it. The solo is great and it’s not as complicated as it looks:) best of luck!
Tom, around 1:11:30 ... how do you think you got a massive attack like that? You didn’t physically move any hexes? Fair enough you could technically switch between two hexes, but it would still be nice to see it. Right now it looks like the ‘move 6’ card is enough to do 6 attack, which sometimes is not possible. Loving the videos and will continue watching whenever I finish these scenario’s!
Good question? I have a nephew who we call “the hulk” because when he’s playing, he’ll hunch over and just plow into people while showing “hulk smash!” - I imagine it’s like that. Norman just hunches over, revs up, and just runs. 😃
Tom at 1:05:59 I think you forgot to heal Norman twice after the long rest. I didnt see it go up and when crystal healed you it should of been 2 points higher. I might be wrong tho
That is very possible! It’s something I forget often....
i forget almost everything each time I play theres so much to remember each turn haha
Great video, although I'm only 70 minutes in to it. Had to search for this as I've had Gloomhaven for a year now and only played it 3 times (and not yet got past this scenario - I seem to fall foul of the Curse cards).
Drools. I want this game so badly. My local gaming store has me on a reserve list for when they get their shipments in, but I don't know how long it will take to come in. Best believe I'm leaving where ever I am to drive directly there when it's available.
Well, I read a blog post from Isaac that says it SHOULD be in stores in January...... so, shouldn’t have to wait too long....? But seriously man, I’m LOVING it.
I don’t think that’s a fair thing to say about this game. It is certainly a big game with a ton of rules, and I know I spend a lot of time in the rule book or online trying to understand things. That is certainly a con for me. But even if I felt like that would make me personally not like the game (which, in this case, is not true. I do like the game a lot, but don’t like looking up all of the rules all of the time) I think it’s important that people know that different game work for different people. So if it doesn’t work for you, that is 100% valid. And I think you did a great job in an earlier comment expressing what you didn’t like about it. I just might discourage telling EVERYONE to avoid the game because of things that didn’t work for you. It just seems like a healthier, way to approach how you feel about a game.... if that makes sense. I just think it might be more helpful for more people than just telling them to avoid a game that they might actually enjoy, despite its flaws.
Hey Tom Im sure people are still going to buy the game no matter how much Gian hates on it. But i dont think its cool either how hes trying to tell other people not to buy it because he doesn't like it. Haters are everywhere haha.
At 20:00 you are looking for a ranged card for Norman -- but the card on the top of the deck will allow you to attack without moving (and get some XP). Then again (as I continue to watch), you use it at 27:00 anyway. I probably would have gone through the door and force the archer to follow you through her own trap (but that can be tricky).
Also, since you ask, I prefer the dice :-)
One thing I often wonder about is what happens when all of an enemy type dies. I don't think you would re-shuffle the deck at 34:18 because the new archer can still use the same card from the current round. If there is some rule I'm missing about that, am happy to be corrected.
Yeah, I wasn’t quite 100% sure how to handle that situation and I haven’t quite looked into it yet. But seems like I probably should
The dice are great. Going to try them in our next adventure.
Poor Crystale... Still, great job.
Yeah, rule for enemy decks is that you only reshuffle them at the start/end of a scenario, or when a reshuffle card is drawn during a round - if you clear a room then continue into the next room on the same round, any already drawn cards still apply to the monsters in the new room; only monster types that haven't had a card drawn yet that round get a new card.
Also, rather than starting a new comment: the rulebook does actually recommend putting tokens for the effect onto traps - on page 14, where it's talking about the various overlay tiles.
At 1:34:45 you accidentally stole an hp from yourself, had me cracking up
Great catch! And SO infuriating!!! I like the dials much more than how they handled the first edition, but they are also kind of annoying. That’s not the last time I made that mistake.... it happens pretty frequently (especially where I am standing and working around tripods and such). I’ve been trying to decide if I use dice for HP and XP too, but heck, I feel like I’ve already overhauled so much! Who knows.... we’ll see what I do in the future....
When Norman first had a chance to enter the second room you forgot the move x card. You could have used the attack 6 (with 2 xp) gotten 6 move with move x and added 2 from your boots of striding and could have hit the boss right out of the gate! about 40:30
Hmmmmm...... I think I see the moment you're talking about -- BUT, my question is: Would that have worked? I mean, wouldn't I have to have done the damage first, then moved? I don't have the card in front of me, but I feel like it says "move x where x is the amount of damage you have done this turn." and since that Attack 6 is a melee attack, the boss would have had to be standing next to me....? I'm not sure now! ButI do like your line of thinking for sure!
You are correct. Must pay attention to words.
Thanks, excellent play-through! But, @ 1h 13m the spellweaver's attack was ranged and next to the Bones, so you should have been at disadvantage.
Oh! Yes, I’ll double check.... I think I made a note of that in the Klingon subtitles, but I’ll double check it.... thanks a lot!
I just went through and looked at that 1h 13m... and I think I disagree with being at a disadvantage. Crystále attacked the commander who was two spaces away. So, even though the bones was next to her, she wasn't attacking the bones. So I think I played that part correctly. I could still be wrong -- but that's my best interpretation of the situation...
Ah, my mistake! Thanks for double-checking!
You bet! Heck, notice how I just assumed you were right... I make a butt-ton if mistakes in these videos. So never be afraid to point one out if you see one!
...Sarcophagus? ...Sarcophagi?? (Screw It) Sarcies!!!! 🤣🤣
Let's get this in Urban Diction and/or Websters asap.
Gah! My face at 24:19 : O I played this scenario without removing those 3 added curses when I drew them. Sidenote: After watching these vids, I keep wanting to call my character Norman instead of Bob the Brute.
Bob!!!! 😂😂😂 I love that name so much!
hah, just did the same thing today!
Well, spoiler alert.... I just did it again an hour ago.... 🤦♂️
20:00 you can use the first card for range (skewer)
Thank you!
The dice as substitutes for damage tokens is a good idea. In fact, that should have been the original design, especially since you count damage in "reverse". They should have made a resin based hit point counter (ie hit dice) and just ticked off the hit points. The other option would have been to make a Monster version of the character hit point/experience point dial slider device. As a point of observation, at this point so far in your adventure, I'm not seeing very clearly how the elements and their markers work. I see how and why you are moving the markers, but the whole element aspect of the game seems a bit flimsy. I'm guessing that with some patience, I will begin to see how they work, and I'm guessing they take on a stronger role when summoning takes place etc. Ok, I'll shut up now and keep watching! Good video!
For the Curse Cards roughly 24:05 From what I read of the rules and what I read on the net is that when a curse card is drawn two things happen ( other than a miss ), the curse card is removed from game and a new curse card is added to the current attack modifier deck ( not the discard pile )....they basically don't go away which sucks
Hmmmm.... that is very different from how I am reading that rule.
Page 11 says that once it’s drawn, it’s simply removed. Below that it does say that NULL cards (the yellow “miss” that everyone starts with) get reshuffled back in. But that’s different than a curse. I’m not sure it makes sense to me to remove a curse card only to replace it with a second (identical) curse card.
Similarly page 23 looks like it just says to remove it once it is drawn....
Maybe I’m missing something (pun not intended) but I might need to be pointed to where you’re seeing that a second curse card replaced the drawn one before I start playing that way....?
I might be a 100% wrong as I'm still trying to learn this....It was super late....wife was on my case about wanting table space back, I said I'll finish this scenario and put it away tonight...so was pretty tired as well. After re-checking my internet source, it looks like it was referring to characters applying curse to the monster deck on one of them and the other was why I decided to go with my initial gut.
Page 23 Curse Section:
Curse - If a Figure is cursed, it must shuffle a curse card into its remaining attack modifier deck. When this card is revealed through one of the figures attacks it is removed from the deck instead of being placed into the attack modifier discard pile
So here's my logic, for this scenario, no where does it say you have been cursed. It just says shuffle 3 curse cards into your deck for each player. So as I draw one, I'm assuming I'm being cursed at that moment....shuffle a new curse card in and remove the old curse card.
so here is this site:
www.ultraboardgames.com/gloomhaven/faq.php
When a curse card is removed from a player's attack modifier deck, it is returned to the player curse card deck, and a curse card removed from the monster attack modifier deck is returned to the monster curse card deck. If curses are distributed at the beginning of a scenario, distribute them as evenly as possible to all those affected, with players deciding cases of ambiguity.
So maybe when they say player curse card deck they mean removed from game and placed back in the tray/box
Yeah, that would be my assumption and interpretation.... and, you’ll have to office me as well - I didn’t look closely enough to see which scenario you were referring to. I assumed you were referring to my most recent scenario where characters were cursed - not the one you were actually commenting on... (I read and reply to comments through an app, not on a nice and big computer screen... and the icon is so small, I have a hard time knowing which Gloomhaven video is being commented on... haha)
And yeah, one thing I have learned through playing this game is that you can sit and analyze and look up rules forever... but sometimes you’ve just got to go with your gut for the enjoyment of the moment. Then look things up later if needed. The game is meant to be fun, and for me, that usually means I do what feels right.... even though sometimes I’m wrong....
But I really do appreciate all of the time you spent in looking that stuff up and writing out your thoughts! I definitely see where you’re coming from, and I think it’s poor wording in the part you showed me. And I definitely agree with your final analysis.
I was commenting on Tom Teaches Gloomhaven (Barrow Lair Gameplay)
th-cam.com/video/lBXjhY_0534/w-d-xo.html
The 2nd scenario with the first boss.
I think it makes more sense considering characters/Monsters can do the cursing...in that aspect...it triggers adding a card...then when it comes up through the attack modifier it gets removed. This scenario is a one off.
Yes, I see that now. Hahaha! Sorry. That was my total bad/dumb.
At 35:30, should the archer have moved closer? It has a move of 5, but the closet player is 6 away. It's my noob understanding that it would move closer, wouldn't it?
You are 100% right! Great catch! I made a note of it in the Klingon subtitles. Make sure you turn those on, as I’ll be making several more mistakes like that. Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes :-)
You're awesome! I'm still working my way thru the video in my free time throughout the day, and you've already replied! Pretty cool :)
I'm still trying to get my hands on Gloomhaven without paying double retail price. Fingers crossed I can find a copy. But when I do, I hope to have a playgroup with someone in it at least half as cool as you with you passion for the game. It's infectious.
Thanks Kevin! I have no clue where you live, but hopefully you can get your hands on it soon! Several of my local game stores have it.... and I’ve seen it on Cool Stuff Inc lately, and I think on amazon...? Either way, it’s JUST hitting retail, so keep checking! No need to pay double yet :-D
So I read your reply, and I thought you know what, he's right, why not call around? Called the biggest game store in my city (Las Vegas) and guy on the phone said they had two in stock! I paused your video and rushed on down and nabbed one before they closed. I'm now the proud owner of a second printing Gloomhaven! I put my name and number on their wall to find potential people to join in.
Thank you SOOO much for your videos! I love that you use the app for the scenarios, I will do that as well. But your processes, and (mostly logical :p lol) way of playing, it made the game look less daunting to jump into. Your videos are great.
Dang! That’s freaking awesome! Congrats on your purchase! Just know that your first several times through you WILL make mistakes (heck, I still am....), and you’ll spend a good chunk of time with your nose in the rulebook. BUT, that after a few plays it’ll all start to smooth out, and your adventure will take on a life of its own. And that’s when it’s the most fun :-D Congrats again Kevin! And good luck on your adventure!
The game with the shield tokens you were thinking of. Is it Time Stories?
Probably!!!! And even if I wasn’t, those would work! (PS, I freaking love that game........)
the learning curve seems pretty steep on this game, though I gather this 2nd scenario is harder the less characters you have because it's harder to pin the leader down.
Yeah.... I made a butt-ton of mistakes on the first scenario. Felt pretty comfortable here in the second, but made that DUMB miscalculation with Crystale (accent on the ‘a’) and her hand.... I really believe I would have breezed through the ending if not for that.... ugh. And yeah, I also think hitting that commander hard as early as possible was the right move.
2 characters is a bit tuff without the tinkerer in the mix I think cause you have very little healing. I think healing helps a lot. I have not tested this myself though but it seems logical.
Yeah, I can see that. I like to play support classes, and I was planning on making the Tinkerer my primary class. I think some of the other classes have crowd control or shielding effects that could mitigate/avoid damage. But the combat spaces are usually so compact, it's hard to avoid and plus avoiding too much means you'll run out of cards.
Cragheart has OK healing too, my wife and I play Crag and Brute and get along OK, but some missions are really tuff with only 2 players, and we play SUPER EASY, we go 2 levels below our own instead of just 1.
General opinion is that Tinkerer's a bad choice for 2-player because you still need to deal damage in order to win - Tinkerer's large hand size and curative effects help win if you can turn it into an attrition battle (self-damaging enemies, or wound effects) but don't help with actually killing enemies...
Nice video, suscribed. Better to use short rest when enemy its so closed and u only need to kill the last ones to finish scenario.
Yes! For sure. I get better at short resting as time goes on.
The dice are a much better way to do it, IMHO. Plus, hey, I love dice and will find a way to incorporate them any time I can!
Yeah, I have been using the dice since the first video, and I LOVE them a lot more.....
At 54:09, Norman should have taken an XP for that attack, right?
Oh! You’re right. I should have taken one XP for that attack. Gosh dang it! Great catch though! I’ll annotate that in the Klingon subtitles ASAP.
Norman heals 2 during the first long rest. Not sure if you correct this later.
Good catch! I didn't correct it later -- but did throw a note in the klingon subtitles. Thanks again!
Just started playing the game so apologies if I made mistake. On your first move of the game. You state you cannot push archer into the trap and you can only push him into the wall. Are you sure that’s right? Just as I think it said in the rule book you can push in any direction?
Hey, no worries! And great question. I filmed this video a while ago, so let me just see if I can clarify push from a general rules perspective, and see if that helps.... (especially because I made tons of mistakes in that video... so keep those Klingon subtitles turned on!)
So, with push, you can KIND OF go any direction. The rule for push is that the distance between you and the thing being pushed is that the distance MUST increase. So, if they’re right next to you now, after/during the push they need to go 1 then 2 then 3... spaces away. If they’re one space now, and you push they can’t still be 1 space away. They’d have to be 2.
And then the exact opposite is true for pull. When you pull they MUST get closer.
Hope that helps!
Hi Thanks for that. So if my understanding is correct, the attack and push 2 (through the trap) would have worked providing attack plus modifier, plus trap damage?
I bought the game last week and finding the rules overwhelming at present. At lot to take in at once...
It is absolutely possible! I’d have to rewatch the video to know for sure.... but I trust you!
At 1:20:45, how did your spellweaver move?
Oh dang! GREAT catch! I’ll have to annotate that tomorrow... thanks for pointing that out! I think my heart just wanted her to move so badly, that I just ignored the rules (accidentally) and went for it. Haha
On the brute's big attach, you didn't move him.
Hmmm.... which big attack? Do you have a time stamp?
I like the dice...they should've done that...would've saved half a rain forest....not to mention so much micromanagement
Totally! I tried the chits a couple of times and if just drove me crazy.....
@@TomTeachesGames I'm ordering the game soon and I'll totally be doing the dice thing haha. Thx for the vids too...you convinced me to play and had good ideas on managing the mess they give you. It's a tough thing you're doing in terms of getting views because people won't want spoilers :-(
I'll be back though :-) Maybe you could do player created scenarios to avoid the spoiler issue?
@@esqueejy You're welcome! And I totally understand that about the views..... thankfully I really don't track the views too too closely -- I really just try to play and record for the fun of playing, recording, and editing. I thought about doing non-spoiler plays, BUT I am dying to see where the story goes for myself! So in a selfish way, I just keep on playing through the story. :D. But I'm excited to hear how things go on your end!
I thought when u do a long rest you need to use the last two cards in your hand...u long rested after u used all of your cards .. im pretty sure thats incorrect..
Um.... I could be wrong.... but I think you might be misunderstanding long rest. A long rest happens INSTEAD of playing cards. Like, no cards are played, your initiative is 99, and then after all other cards (they will all have initiative of 98 or lower) you take your long rest. This way you don’t get trapped without cards. It’s the slightly safer, but more time consuming, way to get your cards back. A short rest can happen after you play your two cards (at the end of the round) but the long rest happens in place of playing cards.
@@TomTeachesGames i see... ugh no wonder why the 1st scenario was so difficult..lol luckily im only on the 2nd ,like you're playing here... ty for the insight
No worries! As you can see, I made a ton of mistakes my first time through too.... and they continue through other playthroughs. 😀 We just do the best we can and have fun along the way, right?
@@TomTeachesGames Exactly !! Just gets frustrating at times lol.. do u still play?
Yup! It has been about a month since my last play/video.... so I need to get back to it. There have just been so many other games coming out recently that I’ve been a little distracted...
so how do you add three cuse cards to four players when there are only ten cards????? you would need to have 12. Are you suppose to just barrow a couple of the monster mods deck curse cards??? I don't get. Is my game missing cards?
Great question! It sent me hunting the forums to find the answer....
On the official BGG Gloomhaven FAQ it says that the good guys should never have more than 10 curses in total throughout their decks. So, in this situation where you need to distribute, two players will only have 2. As players you should decide who that will be as you “distribute them as evenly as possible.”
That would have been nice to have right in the rule book. Thanks @@TomTeachesGames
You bet!
holy crap this guy made so many mistakes, but hey as long as he is having fun right?
Darn tootin’! You should see all of the mistakes on the cutting room floor too....
Tom Teaches not bad overall, but definitely need some more research. It took my group a few games to get in stride with the rules. But good job overall.
Thanks man! It’s a tough game to learn. And, as I mention in the early videos - every single play I have is recorded... and, unlike most games I play - I desperately want to avoid spoilers. So I never saw any video about the game... I just had my brain and the rule book. So yeah, mistakes happen for sure. But, like with any game, we do our best to get it right and have fun.
I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Tom Teaches no prob man keep chugging along.
You bet!
Great vidoes. I will get my gloomhaven in3 days. Just learn all rulles wathing your videos. Great job. I think best gloomhaven videos on internet.
Just one thing i will make better. You spend to much time chosing how to play two cards, your videos would be much shorter if you just show us what 2 cards you will play and why.
Yeah, for sure. I’ve done my best to balance those worlds.... there is a TON of thinking off camera, but I’ve intentionally left some moments of my AP in an attempt to give a feel for the kinds of tough decisions being made.... but I can keep an eye on that and try to not bore the heck out of everyone.... haha! Thanks a ton for watching! And I can’t wait to hear how your campaign goes!
Im reading gloomhaven rules summary and find something intresting i didnt know, and it can add you one round : "cards in Active Area may be moved to Discard Pile to meet condition" - its about short/long rest
Oh, interesting! I started looking at some files summaries and some of them looked longer than the actual rule book, but with no pictures 😂 So I didn’t look too closely at them. I wonder if that came from a FAQ or something.... but yeah! That could have helped!
2 more days for you, right?!?
Yup, i think it could save you last time, to have got one more round. If i got something new and interesting i will paste here :)
Great! Thanks!
