  • Prefer to be Married in Meghalaya?
    Is this a Feminist Dream where women rule? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
    A Khasi woman never joins her husband's household, rather he joins hers and moves in with the girls family.
    Completely opposite from the usual desi households.
    What do you like to try this??
    Multiple tribes in the state of Meghalaya in northeast India practise matrilineal descent. Often referred to as Khasi people and Garo people, among the Khasi people which is a term used as a blanket term for various subgroups in Meghalaya who have distinguishing languages, rites, ceremonies, and habits, but share an ethnic identity as Ki Hynniew Trep (The Seven Huts)
    Women have a dominant role in the matrilineal society of Meghalaya. The youngest daughter of th family, the Ka Khadduh, inherits all ancestral property. After marriage, husbands live in the mother-in-law's home. The mother's surname is taken by children. When no daughters are born to a couple, they adopt a daughter and pass their rights to property to her. The birth of a girl is celebrated while the birth of a son is simply accepted. There is no social stigma attributed to a woman remarrying or giving birth out of wedlock as the "Khasi Social Cusof Lineage Act" gives security to them. Women are known to intermarry outside their tribe. The women who enjoy all the rights live an independent life, dress well, attend church, and many prefer not to get married. They enjoy total security, unlike in the rest of the country. A successful career women of the Khasi society feels that "their societal anomaly" has enabled her to be successful in every way. Most small businesses are managed by women.
    Care of children is the responsibility of mothers or mothers-in-law. The youngest daughter of this society who inherits the ancestral property holds a pivotal role of looking after the welfare of her parents in their old age, as well as the welfare and education of her siblings.

    @Shenaz, Youngest daughter is not the owner of everything it's depend upon family but she inherit her parents house as a care taker but not all the properties. We Khasi men we work for the welfare of our own family first (Kamai iing Kur) when we married we work as a fathers for our children in our wife house as our own.(Kamai iing Khun ) but if we are not married to youngest daughter we build our own for the welfare of our children .

    Being a khasi myself, I wish to say that the matriarchal system followed by the Khasis is not really an ideal set up in society. The boys are neglected and are only used to provide financial and other kinds of help to his parents and sisters without really getting any part of the parents' property. You will see that Khasi males are less educated than Khasi females. They are also very irresponsible towards their wife and children because their loyalty lies with their 'kur' or their clan. Many times the mother of the man tends to control her son into devoting his finances and services towards his clan . The wife and children become secondary. This creates a lot of tension in the family and divorce is quite common. Broken families are aplenty among the Khasis.
    Many educated women either do not get married because they can't find a good mate or they get married outside the community for which they are criticized. I've seen so many irresponsible Khasi men in my lifetime that if my children are able to find good non- Khasi Christian men , I'll be very happy to give them my blessings. I'm not blaming the men. I put the blame on the matriarchal structure of the Khasi society which has made our Khasi men the way they are. I've been burned by this system and I don't want my children to suffer the same fate. I come from a well- educated progressive family in Shillong and I feel that Khasis need to change this system if they want the community to progress in this era and have their men become more educated and more responsible .

      @jlyngdoh5608 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So rather than trying to improve the system you rather give up on it. Wow. Your little " progressive " rant goes to show more about yourself than the system itself. Irresponsibility is something that can be changed, while you have seen irresponsible men, I've seen men who valued this system and knows their role to the dot, they would devote themselves to their mother's household and clan while they're single and when they're married they would devote themselves to their new family. Those cases are few and far in between and are just cases of individual familial manipulation. You're the type of person who would give up on someone or something when things don't go your way, For you it's more about what you can GET rather than what you can Give. smh.. I do Hope your children marry outside the Hynniewtrep society cause I wouldn't wish my worst enemy the problems that come from your type of thinking, which is probably passed down to your children. I pity the khasi men who are unfortunate enough to fall for your children, cause the problems that will come in the future is not worth it. Bimbo's like you should just move somewhere new, some place akin to your mode of thinking and taste.

    Hello, madam ji! We meghalaya people (Garo and Khasi)are bound to follow the same Matriarchal culture. I belong to Garo community. But, feel so much happy and great for being praised. We Garo also do the same. Man goes to Girl house and youngest girl inherit as she is responsible for parents. But as it's being said by many people in comments it depends upon the family members whether to keep youngest daughter to inherit or to keep middle or eldest one. If youngest one is not according to the Will or direction of parents, they have no right to inherit.
